Best new standalone DJ controller 2023: Denon DJ Prime 4+

As 2023 draws to a close and we look ahead to 2024, we’re bringing you our picks of the best new gear this year, from drum machines to turntables.

Best new DJ controller 2023: Denon DJ Prime 4+

It’s no secret that in recent years Denon DJ’s new releases have rivalled anything else on the market for features, while simultaneously offering outstanding value for money. 2023 saw the release of the updated Denon DJ Prime 4+ standalone controller, a case in point for the way the brand’s offerings continue to evolve and develop.

The Prime 4 was already the flagship controller in Denon’s range, but the Prime 4+ showcases how Denon continue to push the envelope with new features and constant development of their platforms. There’s a slick new colour scheme to tie in with Denon’s latest visual style, a tweak to the jog wheels for added feedback and feel, but the big changes come internally. Thanks to software updates and a new Amazon security chip, the two headline features of the Prime 4+ are real-time Stem separation and direct Wi-Fi/Ethernet streaming from Amazon Music Unlimited.

The four-deck Prime 4 was already an extremely good device, with on-board track analysis, Serato unlock, lighting control and up to 4TB of storage via the expandable internal drive bay. The added connectivity and streaming options pushed the Prime 4+ right back up to the top of its class, but it’s the Stems functionality which really sets it apart. Breaking down tracks into instrumentals and acapellas instantly, in real time, gives you the option to get even more creative with your mixes.

Denon’s consistent willingness to update, upgrade and develop their DJ offerings is something to be applauded. You can safely bet there’ll be more to come from Denon in 2024, and if it’s as good as the Prime 4+ then we should all be looking forward to it.
