Music fans’ last ditch attempt to save Brixton Academy

Venue’s future to be decided at council meeting

Music fans have been petitioning Lambeth Council to save Brixton Academy ahead of a licensing hearing to decide its future.

More than 100,000 fans signed a petition and 20,000 have written to the council using a template organised by the Night Time Industries Association – see it here – arguing that the Academy should not remain closed. Police applied for a three month temporary suspension of their license after two deaths following chaotic scenes at a show by Afrobeats singer Asake in December. However, it was recently reported that police were dissatisfied with the progress made in talks with the venue’s owners, and would be seeking the Academy’s permanent closure.

A spokesperson for the Night Time Industries Association told Juno Daily that a date for the hearing – originally expected to be on May 15 – is yet to be set.
