Korg tease new electroacoustic synth prototype
The Acoustic Synthesis_phase 5 uses a combination of electronic and mechanical techniques.

With the Superbooth show kicking off in Berlin today, Korg have revealed a new prototype synth which combines physical vibrations with electronic synth techniques, “[uniting] the sonic richness of real physically vibrating bodies with synth-like control”. The Korg Berlin Acoustic Synthesis_phase 5 is based around 12 resonators, a little like tuning forks, which are vibrated using electromagnets. The sound of the resonators is captured by pickups to generate synth tones.
Developed by the Japanese brand’s experimental Berlin workshop, the instrument is only a prototype at this stage, but Korg say that it “demonstrates our latest efforts in merging the physical world with electronics to make instruments that act and feel alive”.
