Korg Modwave: best new mini synth of 2021

As we celebrate the best of 2021 and look forward to 2022, the Korg Modwave takes the award for best new mini synth.

Our favourite compact synth of 2021 is one which splits opinion slightly. Some people don’t really ‘get’ wavetable synthesis, but those who understand the concept realise that the Korg Modwave is a powerful synth which ombines the best of 1980s Korg wavetable goodness with cutting-edge motion sequencing and modulation.

It’s probably best to start with a little history lesson here. In 1985, Korg’s pioneering DW-8000 showcased the potential of feeding digital wavetable oscillators into analogue filters. The Wavestation followed in 1990, a fully digital take on wavetable synthesis which employed wavetables in what Korg termed ‘Advanced Vector Synthesis’, blending between multiple oscillators. The Modwave builds on those ideas, focusing heavily on the idea of sequencing modulation parameters in order to create movement and tempo-synced effects rather than just creating static, unchanging tones.

While wavetable synthesis has never been as mainstream as things like virtual analogue or even FM synthesis, the range of tones which the approach can produce is hugely impressive. Wavetable synths were always renowned for things like pads and subtle ambiences, but the Modwave showcases how they can effectively do all sorts of other sounds, from smooth basslines to wonky metallic sequences and surprisingly lush leads.

It’s well worth stepping out of your comfort zone and giving the Modwave a try. It sounds great and it’s infinitely easier to use than previous generations of wavetable synthesis. It may not be one of the most obvious synth releases of 2021, but it’s certainly one of the best.
