Youth announces debut solo album 35 years into music career

Album takes inspiration from everything from bubblegum pop to electronica

Youth, super producer, Killing Joke bassist and collaborator with The Orb among many others, has announced details of his firs6 solo album.

Spinning Wheel is scheduled for release on November 19 via his own Youth Sounds/Cadiz Entertainment label,

The album was written, recorded and self-produced in Spain and London and features 11 brand new songs including the eponymously titled lead single which also features Simon Tong (guitar) and Samantha Marais (backing vocals) .

The album features a plethora of different influences, including the bubblegum pop of early 70s – his first mucial love – as well as psychedelic pop and English folk rock. Youth says: ““Everything from Nick Drake to Led Zeppelin, through a lens of Fairport tripping out with the Velvet Underground with a couple of Beach Boys, all the way to Cohen and Rodriguez, via Jim O Rourke, jamming with Fred Neil and Bert Janch and Michael Rother.

Naturally enough though, there’s a big slice of his electronic skills at play too.

Towards the middle of the recordings I decided to remix all the songs with an electronic tech direction and it felt liberating to reimagine them in a more experimental electronic way”.

The album’s tracklisting is:

01. ‘Spinning Wheel’

02. ‘Wooden Floor’

03. ‘Charlotte Says’

04. ‘Pure’

05. ‘Charcoal Man’

06. ‘That’s The Way’

07. ‘Sha La Laa I Love You’

08. ‘Hear The Dolphins’

09. ‘The King Of the Losers’

10. ‘Smiling’

11. ‘Close My Eyes

To coincide with the new album, Youth will be playing live dates in the very near future. His collaborative album with Penny Rimbaud of Crass, Corpus Mei is released the same day via via One Little Independent.
