The Exaltics – Node EP review

The second release on fledgling label Modal Analysis comes from German producer Robert Witschakowski aka The Exaltics. With a catalogue that includes releases on Crème Org, Bunker and his own Solar One, it’s no surprise that Node in places sounds like it is hardwired to a never-ending squat party in the Hague.

“Node 2” captures the essence of such an experience with intuitive expertise, its hissing hats and slinky beats making way for a slamming EBM bassline and horror synths. This is not the kind of music to soundtrack a quick look in the mirror during a toilet visit or having sampled some of Guy Tavares’s microdots. By contrast, “Node 1” is more reflective and in places almost dreamy. Set at a far slower pace, its lumbering, dead-paced beats house tiny glimmering bleeps and mushy chords. It feels like what would happen if one were to look at the night sky through a black veil as a deranged pharmacist provided free codeine to all those present.

Completing this release of diverse influences is Niels Luinenberg’s take on “Node 2”. With his elegant debut album as Delta Funktionen behind him, the Dutch producer showcases his love of metallic rhythms and futuristic synths as clipped drums and a streamlined, stepping rhythm underscores delayed, eerie riffs. Like the effortless, steely elegance of Rotterdam’s skyline, Luinenberg’s interpretation represents a flip side to The Exaltics’ earthy debauchery.
