  1. Starlight (feat Tyesha Blount) (6:00)
  2. Matador Beach (instrumental) (3:27)
  3. Matador Beach (vocal mix) (2:47)
Review: Word on the street is that Alister is the next big thing to come out of the Motor City. The song writer and producer must be hotly tipped, frankly, because the one and only Omar S has taken him under his wing and recorded and mixed these two new tunes, which are tasters from his full length album to come in the spring. They bare all his hallmarks too - crunchy, dusty drums, rugged chord vamps and prickly perc. 'Starlight' is all that with an added vocal, while 'Matador Beach' is more trippy and nocturnal, with a delicate falsetto lost in pinball melodies and ricocheting hits.

  3. Tree Ring (4:54)
  4. Tasteful Nudes (6:28)
Review: Anderson follows up on his last fine outing with a new and smooth fusion of breaks, acid, trance and techno here for the fledgling Day By Day label. Opener 'Jelly Bean' (Virus Outbreak mix) is a deep and heady track with oceanic pads swirling around next to punch kicks. It's cuddly post e-rush bliss, frankly. 'Level Quest' is more melodic old school techno and 'Tree Ring' brings some more spaced out hippie vibes to a weird and wonderful downtempo number. Finally, 'Tasteful Nudes' closes in skittish fashion with hyper speed drums and hypnotic lead synths that are warped out of shape.

Review: James Bangura is up next on New York City's Mister Saturday Night. The Washington-based artist is an exciting new talent: said to be a nomad who takes in various influences and can never be pinned down to one style. Drum 'n' bass was said to be a huge influence on Bangura during his younger years back in Alabama, and he revisits those seminal beats here on Interpretation Of Sound. From the contorted groove of 'Big Change', a sharp stepper that incorporates dub techno influences, to the meditative and polyrhythmic hypnotism of 'The Diffuser' or the depressive jungle introspections of 'Taking Loose' - this one really takes the genre into exciting new realms. Tip!

  4. Efficient Accident (4:10)
Review: Pablo Bozzi aka Lapse of Reason and a member of Chainbreakers, Soft Crab and Lost Highway monist others, is quickly massing a fine catalogue of electro tunes on various different labels. BITE is the latest to gobble him up and in return he offers four futuristic fusions. 'Last Vision' builds on a rugged bassline riff that is overlaid with sweeping chords and a retro-feeling melodic sequence. '42 Chambers' is more driving, with crashing hits and reflective chords bringing the intergalactic noise. After the blistering workout that is 'Faking Dax,' there is a more rueful mood to 'Efficient Accident' that keeps you in suspense.

  3. Billion Dollar (5:41)
Review: When Cabaret Voltaire returned to the release schedule in 2020 as the one-man Richard H Kirk show, fans were relieved to find that mind-bending meld of 1970s Kosmische, techno, dub, house and space-age experimental electro was as pure as it ever has been - the results being a typically fresh and forward-thinking record the man in question summed up as "no nostalgia... normal rules do not apply. Something for the 21st Century. No old material."

Less than six months later and the big CV has more next level business to offer us, coming in the form of Shadow of Funk, a new EP that offers something of a counterpoint or extension to last year's full-length, Shadow of Fear. Based on 'Billion Dollar' alone - an acid-driven big, dark room banger that closes this EP -this release looks set to make an equally heavy impact, but as with anything this man touches, the joy is in discovery. So, let's leave it at that.

  6. Desultory (8:34)
Review: Carcass Identity are Matthieu Levet and Ernesto Gonzaalez, two heroes of the Brussels underground for over 10 years. Following up their 2018 debut for Bologna-based label Random Numbers, the duo present their next collaboration for Glasgow's Phase Group which once again infuses dub electronics with cosmic and psychedelic influences. Tracks such as 'Things To Forget' explore freefall tribal trance, while the contorted techno derivatives heard on tracks such as 'Freedom Principle' or the meditative polyrhythmic futurism of 'Desultory' were highlights. Highly recommended for fans of slo-mo ritual techno in the vein of Black Merlin or Vactrol Park - tip!

Review: Techno troubadour Yan Cook has a fine discography on some of the most respected labels out there. Now he heads to Ukraine's Cooked, a young but perfectly formed imprint, and kicks off his EP with 'Blades,' which is all melon twisted synths and driving techno kicks. 'Whistleblower' then slips into a deeply atmospheric groove with gurgling bass and watery effects and 'Grom' is all about the swing in the drums. Gritty textures and insistent claps add to the thrill of it all and 'Skyhigh' is a more frosty dub techno cut that leaves out breathless.

Review: Danny Wolfers is undeniably one of the most prolific and endlessly creative artist sin electronic music. Keeping up with his numerous different aliases alone is a challenge. For this one on Unknown to the Unknown he becomes Dickie Smabers and heads off into a dramatic world of lo-fi, low slung and dusty house beats . Plenty of pixelated melodies light up the airwaves while more electro tinged rhythms and robotic jackbeats also help move things along in typically dynamic fashion. As always, this is another vital dispatch from The Hague.

Review: Ben UFO has already been showing off with this record on Instagram, messing around with the loops and making new tracks on the fly. The full album features 50 of them, and they range from percussive sounds to drum kicks and plenty of weird and wonderful designs in between. In the hands of the right selectors there are infinite possibilities here to create ambient set openings, deep, 5am minimal soundtracks or just to drop over other records for extra layers of texture and intrigue.

Review: Rotterdam's prolific DJ Overdose is a fine fit for LIEs with his knackered aesthetic and rugged electro sound. His first album for the label is another masterclass from the venerated veteran across 13 atmospheric tracks of rhythmic invention. There are plenty of classic tropes as well as a wealth of fresh new thinking here with cosmic trips like 'This World' and more rugged workouts like '3000' sitting next to icy cowbell pings on 'Razor' ass wiggling delights such as 'What Do I Know.' The West Coast has long been a leading light in electro, and that is proven to still be the case here.

Review: Bavarian label SNC Recs are back with their fourth release by Nicolas Epe aka The Duty freedom titled the Chronic Durations. The Cologne-based musician and artist takes you on a dramatic, emotional journey into the world of liquid drum 'n' bass, taking influences from the past and reinterpreting them into modern forms. A great example is A2 cut 'Grand Theft Uber' which combines gnarly 303 acid with Dillinja style breaks, or the glitched breakneck rhythms heard on the title track to a backdrop gloomy strings, and the glassy-eyed and bittersweet closer 'Underwelt'. To immerse yourself further in the album, Epe has created a video series to accompany the tracks, creating a full sensory experience.

  3. Bowyer - "Big Beat Manifesto" (6:56)
  4. Tom Joyce - "Riding Zone" (5:53)
Review: French label Sounds Benefit pool resources once more with four different artists for this innovative new tech house wax. Pager Records co-creator Phil Evans opens up with a wear but fist clenching tech grinder with wigged out effects and crisp, snappy drums. Marco Bley aka Def Engine then serves up an edit of 'Escape Moot' thats driving and warm with a playful little chord vamp sure to get hands in the air. On the flip there's more colourful and emotive house from Bowyer and a deep, bumping bit of cosmic tech funk in the form of 'Riding Zone.'

  3. Miki - "Templares" (6:59)
  4. Miki - "Templares" (Gerd Janson & Shan remix) (6:56)
Review: Life of Marvin is a joint venture between Life & Death chief DJ Tennis and Italo-trance experts Marvin & Guy. Next up on their label is the return of Miki with the deep space transmission of 'Templares' (TEMPorary Low Audible RESonance) a proper deep space transmission which is reworked by Gerd Janson & Shan. Then they've got legend Francesco Farfa on the flip, with the low slung polyrhythmic kosmische of 'Peace Treaty' originally released as part of Farfability on the Interactive Test label, newly remastered. It also receives a nice remix in Frankfurt, this time by legend Roman Fluegel which takes it into hypnotic chug territory.
