Cat: FS 031. Rel: 02 Nov 15
  1. An Ever
  2. Rrecs
  3. What Is Free
  4. BR56
Review: Finale Sessions is excited about this release from Knoxville, Tennessee artist Alex Falk. He has been on our radar for some time now so we are pleased to share this with you! The A1 track "An Ever" is one of our favorite tracks on the EP, with dreamy pads and monstrous stabs making for a fantastic floor-stomper. Rounding out the A side is "Rrecs", a deep Techno cut with clattering chords and moving drums and claps. B1 track "What Is Free" is another solid peak time killer with thick stabs and cut-up vocals making for a perfect Finale Sessions release. Finally, "BR56" brings up the tempo while chilling out the vibe with dubbed-out chords, nasty filter work and a sound floating somewhere between Techno and House.

Cat: DC 173. Rel: 07 Jun 17
  1. Brian's Proper Dun One (7:13)
  2. Wait A Second (feat MC R1bbz) (6:41)
  3. Trance, Init? (6:41)
Review: Alan Fitzpatrick returns to Drumcode, marking his first appearance since late 2016 when he remixed Moby's hit "Porcelain".The release opens with "Brian's Proper Dun One", a track which caused a storm on his Twitter profile when he first started playing it last year. Loaded with sharp and pounding drums, this is a no holds barred, certified main room anthem! "Wait A Second" has been getting a lot of play on Drumcode Radio of late. This rave inspired track takes a raw, stripped back approach and delivers a killer blow. Alan sampled the vocals of MC r1bbz from an LTJ Bukem tape pack from the early 90s and the record tips its cap to early jungle raves around the M25. The release closes with "Trance, Init?" a homage to Fitzpatrick's days as a raver before he became a DJ. The breakdown is sure to be a hands in the air moment at festivals all over the globe this summer.

Cat: CAST 05. Rel: 12 Jun 17
  1. Luis Flores - "Track 1" (5:34)
  2. 138 - "Track 3" (5:42)
  3. Bas Mooy - "Track 2" (5:49)
  4. Ontal - "Track 4" (7:04)
Review: Current heroes of the industrial techno sound here tend to focus on the industrial side of things for The Cast Project: a vinyl affair from Los Angeles based on the collective sounds from a faction of artists. They are said to gather a few artists; each of them providing several unique audio samples, clips and/or field recordings that best define their sound. They then collect the samples from each artist and redistribute them to the artists as a master pack, at which point they create a unique track. First up fellow Los Angeleno Luis Flores delivers the grinding and guttural first offering, while 138 then delivers some impressive Autechre styled IDM on his/her effort. On the flip, Dutch terroriser Bas Mooy delivers a furious and powerful warehouse techno stormer that blows the doors off as always. Finally Serbian duo Ontal deliver some more of their typically contorted takes on techno.

  2. Verschiebung 2 (6:31)
  3. Verschiebung 3 (5:08)
  4. Verschiebung 4 (3:45)
Review: 2016 marks two decades since Roman Flugel made his debut. It says much about the productive, genre-straddling German that he retains the desire to do things differently after all these years. Verscheibung is his first EP of 2016, and arrives for the rather fine Die Orakel label overseen by LARJ's Oliver Hafenbauer. The four tracks are split between stripped-back techno and druggy, off-piste ambient (the bubbly, post-party weirdness of closer "Track 4"). The most obviously floor-friendly cut opens the EP, with Flugel layering wonky, minor key melody lines over a dense but minimalist groove. Elsewhere, check the Villalobos-ish strangeness of "Track 3", and the druggy, pitched-down experimental throb of "Track 2".

  3. Lempt Jarkarin (4:36)
  4. Lidya Birkett (5:37)
  5. Rjiyen Orandin (5:01)
Review: Marcel Dettman's mighty MDR label doesn't offer a huge amount of releases every year, but what does get put out is always pure and utter quality. The Berghain resident pick out Ryan James Ford for number 17 in the catalogue, a young producer which we know little to nothing about at this point. We do, however, know that he makes seriously effective techno in the label's familiar style. There's five cuts spread across the two sides on here, all representative of Dettman's marathon sets in which he spans the full circle. Aside from all the techno bashings, there are also moments of tranquillity, manifested in the beatless ambience of "Hoodlam Klothe", and "Lempt Jarkarin", in particular. Do check "Rjiyen Orandim" for some serious percussive action, though. An impressive debut.

  1. Peer Pressure
  2. Peer Pressure (Daniel Andreasson mix)
  3. For No One
  4. Raptures
  5. The Push
Review: The Peer Pressure EP from the under-rated Mark Forshaw finds Scenery Records once again highlighting the rich strain of local production talent in the Liverpool area. Involved in the Merseyside scene since the '90s, Forshaw has released on labels like Mathematics, Tabernacle and Apartment and is also a member of Phantom Planet Outlaws with John Heckle and Binny. If you've checked Forshaw's prior output you will be happy with Peer Pressure as soon as the grubby, jacked up house of the title track hits its groove, with his four other cuts heading down a similarly unpredictable path. Kudos to Scenery for seeking out Swedish producer Daniel Andreasson to remix the title track too! This is another no nonsense EP from Scenery that is lovably rugged and unpredictably creative.

  4. First Glimt I Ogat (6:41)
Review: Dark Entries are simply a good record label, enough said. However, we will give you a touch of context on this latest killer, a four-tracker by the mythical Frak trio, still wearing their aluminium hats after twenty years of head-banging. "Sudden Haircut" has been recorded exclusively for the label, and it's a delicious techno lick with a crescendo of XOXBOX acid, while both "Synthfrilla" and "Synthgok" were recorded in 2010, and have previously appeared on the much coveted Sex Tags Mania label out of Bergen, Norway - both essential bangers. The finale is in the shape of "First Glimt I Ogat", another of Frak's classic drum-led house weavers that works both on its own and mixed into just about anything. Recommended gear - be quick!

Ternary Fission EP
Cat: HNRUK 009. Rel: 27 Apr 20
  1. Corridor (7:48)
  2. Stetoskop (5:37)
  3. Micro Fission (7:12)
  4. Arcitect (6:34)
Review: Original Swedish techno freaks Frak are back with their characteristically raw and weird sound on Ternary Fission, which lands on the excellent Gothenburg label Hoga Nord. "Corridor" sees the crew in thumping, progressive mode, while "Stetoskop" shows off their more wobbly, psychedelic side. "Micro Fission" is actually quite a detailed and dynamic groove in the Frak canon, coolly flirting between spannered electro, slick disco and wobbly acid and making it work beautifully. "Arcitect" swerves once more for the gutter with ample edgy synths sludging towards a murky end point - something Frak can steer so very well indeed.

Realismo (12")
Cat: BORFT 125. Rel: 03 Jun 15
  1. Nerve Netting (9:44)
  2. Progressive Latitude (7:29)
  3. Major Attack (7:23)
Review: Frak must be amongst the most consistent artists in techno. Some 26 years after launching their Borft Records imprint, they're still churning out bizarre 12" exercises in grotty Scandinavian techno, with very little sign of their notoriously high quality threshold slipping. Realismo delivers three more winding, twisting analogue treats, kicking off with ten-minutes of mid tempo, acid-flecked, heads-down freakery (the brilliantly icy, but also strangely intense "Nerve Netting"). "Progressive Lattitude" is a little fuzzier and more distorted, but explores similar sonic territory. Things get more hectic on closer "Major Attack", which is a typically wild interpretation of acid house with additional razor-sharp electronics.

Review: For the best part of a decade, Fred Peterkin has impressed with his ultra-deep, soul-flecked take on deep house and techno. Here, his Soul People Music imprint gives birth to a new sub-label, Energy of Sound, with the New York producer delivering a double-pack's worth of previously unreleased cuts. Naturally, the standard is abnormally high throughout, with Peterkin variously serving up sumptuous, dreamy fare ("Down Under", the San Francisco '90s deep house revivalism of "Don't Be Afraid"), chunkier deep house rollers ("Memory P"), crunchy dub house ("Dub In The Sky"), and throbbing, tech-tinged brilliance ("Tokyo To Chiba" and the European-sounding "Sybian").

Review: With Ben Frost's Aurora album amongst many people's end of year lists, Mute draw together a selection of remixers for this Variant 12" whose collective reputation is every bit as impressive. You really aren't ready for this line up. First up, you got Evian Christ's broken, pseudo-bass version; next, Dutch E Germ transforms the original into a broken, swinging bundle of percussion; while HTRK delivers a fine concoction of steely drum machine licks and kicks on their slower remix. On the flip it's all about the floor, where Kangding Ray calls all the ravers and dishes out the techno servings on his mutation of "No Sorrows", whereas Downwards boss and Birmingham techno pioneer Regis turns up with a hollow, muscled roller for the late hours. All in all, a pretty banging affair.

Salut The Noize With A Laugh
Cat: FIT 005. Rel: 11 Jun 12
  1. Marcus Mixx - "Salut The Noize With A Laugh"
  2. Fit - "Kali"
Review: Coming from the somewhat shadowy and increasingly collectible Detroit crew Fit, this curious slab of wax delivers two starkly unique variations of raw analogue house. Marcus Mixx is on untouchable form with the twisted thump of "Salut The Moize With A Laugh". The titular laugh messes around with delirious pulses of synth and drunken hats for one of the weirdest jack tracks you're likely to hear this year. Fit takes over for the flip side for a thoroughly stripped down track that capitalises on an endlessly looping note, while the scuffed beat cycles around it in a wonderfully scatty fashion.

  4. Korridor - "Somnolence" (9:00)
Review: Nordanvind Records is a new techno label from Sweden and judging by the country's past achievements within the dance music sphere, we're pretty excited about it! It's a collaborative effort from four rising talents in the game, some of whom have already appeared on quality imprints in and around the Scandinavian territories. First up is Skymn's "Memory", a broken jigsaw of a track with eerie background sonics; Nobody Home aka Marcus Henriksson comes through with the grey-scaled "Speglar", "En Liten Saga" by Fjader is a dubby techno affair surrounded by bleak drones, while Korridor - who has appeared on the excellent Northern Electronics alongside Abdulla Rashim - turns in "Somnolence", the top pick in our opinion and also the track with most movement and character. All in all, a rather fine bundle of cave sounds!

  3. BLNDR - "Tomb" (5:38)
Review: Sweden's Hypnus Records has been going strong since last year, delivering an impressive 10 records in this period! Although the label is coated in the Northern hemisphere's cold outlook, they've scouted a number of artists from different regions of Europe. Their latest offering brings a second volume of their Adepts series, lead by label casual Luigi Tozzi and "Hierophant" which finds the Italian in a deep, ethereal mood with those lamenting pads and gently cascading beats. On the flip, "Kykeon" by Feral brings some subtle bursts of acid to the fore over calming deep techno rhythms, with BLNDR's "Tomb" occupying a similar, mood enhancing mindscape.

Review: UK techno veterans Mark Broom and James Ruskin first joined forces under The Fear Ratio alias back in 2011, delivering the inventive - and hugely enjoyable - IDM-meets-techno full-length, Light Box. Here they join forces once more for a follow-up that gleefully explores similar sonic territory, whilst throwing a few more influences - most notably experimental hip-hop and vintage electro - into the pot for good measure. The result is a hugely entertaining album that naturally doffs a cap to Skam Records' dystopian roots, as well as the heavyweight soundsystem throb of dubstep, the hypnotism of dub techno, and the crackling electronic wizardry of Autechre.

Review: Since making his mark in the dub techno scene two decades ago, Fluxion has slowly shifted his sound to incorporate a wider range of interconnected influences and inspirations. So, while "Perspectives", his eighth album, has the hazy, half-light pulse of dub techno at its heart, the rhythms are a little bolder, the accompanying electronics more colourful, the melodies jazzier, and the variety of tracks a little wider. As a result, it's one of his most entertaining and mood-enhancing albums yet, with highlights including the rainbow of interconnected melodies and dub-flecked throb of "Formation", the warming late night shuffle of "Glimpses", the piano-sporting haziness of "Down The Line" and the jazzy ambient techno bliss of "Promise".

Review: Hospital Productions is a non-stop operation and following this year's long-players from Alessandro Cortini, Ninos Du Brasil and Ron Morelli, Vatican Shadow's latest swoop is this ambient album produced with Function. The seven-track LP was recorded between Berlin and New York, and it's described as best suited for after-hours home listening, but whether you really want to listen to this after a big night is up to you. Indeed "A Year Has Passed" and "A Year Has Gone By" are downbeat and melancholic, whereas other tracks lean more towards industrial ambient, similar to fellow Hospital artist Lussuria's work. "The Nemesis Flower" is a darker highlight while "Red Opium" and "Bejewelled Body" is where the house and techno beats lie.

Review: Minimal Wave sister label Cititrax have been teasing fans with the prospect of a Further Reductions album from Shawn O'Sullivan and Katie Rose and the six tracks on Woodwork more than live up to expectations! Although O'Sullivan will be known to most for his industrial leaning techno productions for labels like Avian, L.I.E.S. and The Corner, the Further Reductions collaboration with Katie Rose dates back as far as 2008, formed to explore a vocal-led, contemporary take on the minimal wave sound. According to Cititrax, Woodwork combines the influences of classic techno and early house to create "super lush and atmospheric tracks that work both on and off the dance floor." There's something XTRMNTR era Primal Scream about "High End Basics" whilst "Void Of Course" sounds like gloopy acid house slowed down to a deathly crawl, the rest you should experience for yourself!
