  5. Intuition (Black Merlin remix) (8:21)
  6. Petite Mort (Trenton Chase remix) (5:20)
Review: Levana's Tears is Aura Nox's first solo EP on Science Cult, which also makes its own debut with this fantastic electro 12". The opener is all twitchy synths and slapping drum breaks before the drums and synths 'A Sliced Up Pear' sound like they have been fired out of some futuristic later gun. 'Intuition' explores a slower, darker vibe with menacing bass and jittery drum patterns, and the remix of it from Black Merlin then slows down even further to make for a widescreen cinematic exploration. 'Petite Mort' (Trenton Chase remix) rounds out with some happy melodies and retro 80s synth flourishes. All in all, a fine debut.

Review: AUX88 Bass Magnetic re-Issue 1993-2018. Back by popular demand, the same unique spirits that brought forth the sound of Detroit streets and turned it into the futuristic soundscape known as "Techno-Bass", The Original members have collaborated to re-issue their catalog 25+ years later. Starting with their 1st double pack LP, "Bass Magnetic" (considered to be a mesh of influences between Miami bass and Detroit techno), AUX88 established themselves in an effort to stay true to their roots in the streets and the clubs creating their own genre into a global dance culture. After the release and production of their own documentary ("AUX88-Portrait of an Electronic Band"), the group celebrates its now classic recordings. Harkening back to its first days on cassette tape to revive a future generation of vinyl aficionados. AUX88's "Bass Magnetic" = Classic Detroit Electro.

  3. Bytes 1 (Technosis) (1:01)
  4. Bytes 2 (Tales From The Bass Side) (0:28)
  5. Bytes 3 (Warning 1) (0:19)
  6. Bytes 4 (Warning 2) (0:31)
Review: Detroit duo Aux88 always danced to a different drum than their Motor City peers, developing a ludicrously weighty trademark sound that put massive, mind-mangling analogue bass and gut-punching electro beats at the heart of the action. "Direct Drive", a 1995 release that has long been hard to find (hence this much-needed reissue), is one of the best examples of their distinctive sound. The title track (side A on this edition) is little more than a raw, thrusting bassline, snappy machine beats, spacey pads and occasional Kraftwerk samples, but it's brilliantly floor-friendly and brilliantly executed - Detroit body music for those who like their club cuts sub-heavy. Elsewhere, "Aux Express (DJ K1 Mix)" is a bouncy electro jam and the short "Bytes" tracks are wonky vocal samples for creative DJs.

The Bridge

  2. Rod Modell - "Transmission D" (6:37)
  3. Thomas Fehlmann - "Offline" (7:12)
  4. Domenique Xander - "Lowercase" (7:04)
Review: Introducing Minimal Detroit Audio, a label run by Motor City minimal techno pioneer Terrence Dixon that has been eight years in the making. The inaugural release The Bridge is a various artists EP featuring three undisputed masters of the artform. Dixon himself kicks things off with the sparse locomotive stomp of 'The Musical' with its haunting melody playing centre stage, followed by DeepChord main man Rod Modell who serves up some typically expansive groove dynamics with the cavernous and glacial 'Transmission D'. Over on the flip, German veteran Thomas Fehlmann goes deeper with the delay drenched riddims of 'Offline' followed by Berlin's Domenique Xander treading a similarly ghostly dub trail on "Lowercase".

  1. They All Called 'Em Garys (6:54)
  2. Colour Of A Dream (8:34)
  3. Friday Night Dancing (7:54)
  4. Magnetic Dog (8:03)
Review: Long-serving techno producer Alan Fitzpatrick isn't messing around on his fourth single of 2021, which also happens to be the second volume in the Special Selects Series of club-focused 12" single. Fitzpatrick is in full on nostalgia mode on opener 'They All Call 'Em Garys', a giddy throwback to the early '90s that adds hammered-out, rave style piano riffs to a stomping and jacking techno groove. 'Colour of a Dream' also pumps hard and sounds a little like the kind of fare he used to release on Drumcode a decade ago, while 'Friday Night Dancing' comes on like a 21st century re-imagining of Beltram's 'Energy Flash' with added Lee 'Scratch' Perry vocal samples. Finally, 'Magnetic Dog' is a sleazy, driving number smothered in ride cymbals, foreboding bass and angular electronic motifs.

  1. Digital Modulation (4:33)
  2. Exit Level (5:12)
  3. Function (6:00)
  4. System Error (5:01)
Review: REPRESS ALERT!: EYA Records has a big one on its hands here as two big names in Innershades and Do or Die join forces for four searing cuts that draw on multiple genres. 'Digital Modulation' is a jacking cut with high speed synth lasers shooting over mechanical beats. 'Exit Level' is an acid laced, rave tinged techno banger for strobe lit warehouses and 'Function' then gets more mysterious, with an ethereal vocal sound and more acid all going deep. 'System Error' closes on a scintillating percussive energy and broken beat techno.

  1. The Nature Of Our Anger (6:14)
  2. Reinforced Control (5:12)
  3. Reinforced Control (Monrella remix) (4:54)
  4. Beneath The Surface (4:49)
Review: Trauma Collective mean business. Should you be in any doubt, just drop the needle on their third release and feel the wind blowing your hair back instantly. Following 12"s from ASC and Monrella, this latest payload comes from Kwartz, the Spanish producer also found lurking around Horo and other cutting edge labels. Hard as nails techno is the order of the day here, as Kwartz exorcises some industrial demons on the brilliantly clattering 'The Nature Of Our Anger'. 'Reinforced Control' is marginally more restrained, but only just. Meanwhile, Monrella returns to Trauma to remix 'Reinforced Control' with a deadly, swung groove that begs to be rocked in the club. 'Beneath The Surface' brings a total KO with a searing line in high-frequency texture and a rugged, relentless undercarriage of rhythm. What more could you ask for from a bruising beast of a techno record?

  3. Future Retro III (4:49)
Review: Claudio PRC is back on his own 012 label and once again it is a fresh collaborate EP. This time he links up with Blazej Malinowski for three searing techno work outs. 'Future Retro I' ride son a way of fixing synths and rolling drums that are designed to very much to get you into a zoned out state of mind. 'Future Retro II' is deeper, headier, more smooth and otherworldly with its swirling pads and dubby drums. Last of all, 'Future Retro III' shows another side with lush ambient design, only the most suggestive of pulsing rhythms and a cosmic atmosphere that casts your mind free to dream.

Review: Jerome Sydenham's Ibadan imprint is back with the fourth volume in the Leads & Bites series, presenting an exciting selection of soon-to-be timeless dancefloor favorites. Chilean producer Massiande follows up releases on Freerange and Phonica with the NYC basement bounce of 'Mainline' and its familiar vocal samples, while The Prince Of Dance aka Elbee Bad gets deep down and dirty on 'Len's House'. Over on the flip, S.A.T. (Sydenham, AYBEE and Trent) team up for a hypnotic trip into the aether on 'Yaphet' and finally some low slung Balearic flavour courtesy of Swedish duo MLiR teaming up with Arnau Obils (aka Velmondo) on 'Calanda'.

Review: Following up recent releases on Dustin Zahn's Enemy, Dolma and DCLTD, Madrillian techno hero Manuel Anos aka Psyk is back on his esteemed NON Series with another impressive selection of main room techno tools. On the Everything Ascending EP, he sets the scene on a dub techno tip with opening cut 'Nine', followed by the chiming hypnotic polyrhythms of 'Some'. Over on the flip, he remains in heady territory with the deep tribal ritual of 'Hiss' and closes it out with the glassy-eyed and bittersweet abiment electronica of 'Seq6'.

Review: Voltage is the in-house label of the electronic music festival of the same name in Zwevegem (Belgium) which is now into its fifth vinyl release. The highest profile artist featured on the Alternating Current various artists EP is of course Spanish veteran Reeko, who gets straight down to business on the hypnotic tunnel vision of 'I've Seen A Civilisation" which is yet another fine example of the Asturian techno sound. The other artists featured on here are relative newcomers, such as Brussels-based Altibas on the greyscale dub techno dynamics of 'Anaphora', as well as Greek DJ/producer Cirkle with a droned-out and cerebral power groove titled 'Under Their Eyes' - nailing that classic Prologue sound of old.

  4. Jumping To The Beat Of Your Shadow (5:05)
Review: Ste Roberts's proudly titled STE imprint is exactly what white label techno should be about: no bull shit, high functioning dance floor weapons. The latest once again mines a freaky late night vibe, the sort of moments in the night when everything is blurred round the edges and space and time has become warped. 'Queen Bee' has a meandering lead synth that gets you into a drugged up state without even touching a key. 'Dominated Until 5am' is dark and sexy BDSM techno, 'Mr Hyde' is a jungle techno workout that pulls no punches and 'Jumping To The Beat Of Your Shadow' is perfectly twisted, dubbed out tech funk. Cheers!

Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** Originally released back in 2017 on Demdike Stare's Distort Decay Sustain imprint, Shinchi Atobe's critically acclaimed opus still sounds as fresh as it did back then. We've all heard the story of how Sean Canty and Miles Whitaker tracked him down in Japan and convinced him to release some of his first music in 15 years, and it was certainly worth the wait. From the glassy-eyed and mesmerising deepness of 'Regret', to the greyscale dub techno experiments across both parts of 'First Plate' which hark back to his debut on Chain Reaction at the turn of the millennium. There are even moments of lush ambient texture as explored on tracks like 'The Test Of Machine' part 2 while 'Republic' is a more dancefloor ready cut yet, still very much loaded directly off the factory floor.

This expanded edition features new bonus tracks such as 'Wondering' and 'Q' (Right Brain remix). We know we're preaching to the choir here, but we must say it really is a stone cold classic from The Motor City and one of the finest explorations in 'hi-tech soul' - essential listening basically. Remastered from DAT tapes and original sources by Curve Pusher on Larkin's very own Art Of Dance imprint.
