Ben Sims pres Tribology Sampler 1 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MachineSampler 001. Rel: 26 Nov 18
  1. Planetary Assault Systems - "The Grinder" (7:14)
  2. Mark Broom - "Peak" (4:38)
  3. Damon Wild - "Status" (5:12)
  4. Insolate - "Strike" (5:58)
Review: Born out of the prominent London techno night with the same name, the Machine label launches in style with the Tribology compilation mixed by label and party co-founder Ben Sims, a lynchpin of the British techno scene. This first sampler from the exclusives-packed mix sees an all star cast offering up their hard-hitting wares in uncut form. Planetary Assault Systems is on searing form with "The Grinder" while Mark Broom's "The Peak" pings all kinds of raucous, discordant synth lines around the mix. Damon Wild has a more paranoid tint to his own fist-shaking banger, and Insolate rounds the record off with the stealthy, strafing tones of "Strike".

The Snake Bites Twice (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: CKNOWEP 13. Rel: 13 Dec 18
  1. Steal The Snow (5:46)
  2. Cobra Structure (7:20)
  3. Polywater Acid (8:18)
  4. Down 2 Jakk (7:04)
Review: When it comes to contemporary takes on early Chicago acid, few artists have quite as impressive a track record as I Love Acid founders Joshu Doherty and Richard Bevan AKA Posthuman. Further proof arrives via the duo's first EP for Craigie Knowes, which boasts a ridiculously heavy and psychedelic workout - "Cobra Structure" - amongst its' numerous highlights. Further encouragement to start jackin' is provided via the undulating TB-303 lines, creepy chords and clanking machine drums of "Polywater Acid", while "Down 2 Jakk" fixes twisted acid lines and stabbing, rave style lead lines to crispy drums. Arguably best of all, though, is EP opener "Steal The Snow", a deep, spacey and bleeping electro cut whose fizzing energy is enhanced no end by the presence of some seriously bouncy piano riffs.

Cat: PERLON 118. Rel: 24 Oct 18
  1. Sea Of Hands (6:34)
  2. Outro (3:07)
  3. The Girls Thing (8:29)
Review: Over the course of his 15-year career, Bruno Pronsato has proved adept at combining otherworldly, minimalist rhythms with looser, more organic musical elements. He's at it again here on this Perlon outing, proving that sparse minimal techno can still feel warm and human. This is particularly evident on opener "Sea of Hands", where Pronsato's evocative, soft-touch vocal rise above chiming synthesizer notes and an off-kilter, snare-heavy beat. There's an even more organic feel to "Outro", where warm bass guitar notes and synthesized steel drum sounds come accompanied by little more than claps and cymbals. The most dancefloor-focused cut of the lot is B-side "The Girls Thing", a typically deep, sparse and bass-heavy minimal techno roller blessed with intricate percussion programming and Villalobos levels of wonkiness.

  3. Nocturnalism (6:44)
  4. Araya (7:14)
Review: Still basking in the positive reviews that poured in for his recent debut album "Luminous Air", Simon Keat brings his Reedale Rise project to Subwax's Excursions offshoot for the very first time. Warm, melodious and far-sighted dancefloor futurism is the game, with the Liverpool producer playing it like a pro. Check out the gently pulsing acid lines, starry-eyed chords and bubbling deep electro vibes of "Tranquille" and the riff-heavy rhythmic snap of "Nocturnalism". There's much to get the juices elsewhere across the EP, though, with the deep chords, life-affirming futurist electronics and bustling breakbeats of "Araya" hitting home particularly hard. In a word: superb.

The Nature & The Metal EP (hand-numbered hand-stamped 12" + insert limited to 250 copies)
Cat: MOD 006. Rel: 16 Nov 18
  1. Beautiful Sadness (7:24)
  2. External Guidance Suggested (9:41)
  3. Ritual Serenade (7:17)
  4. The Nature & The Metal (7:07)
Review: Over the last decade, few have amassed as fine a catalogue of revivalist Italo-disco, EBM and synth-wave cuts than The Revolving Eyes. It's because of this that each new release from the Belgain duo is worth a listen. Predictably, there's plenty of dark and clandestine fodder to be found on The Nature And The Metal, their first release of 2018. Highlights include the foreboding horror chords, psychedelic acid lines and metronomic throb of "Beautiful Sadness", the rising orchestration and clicking drum machine hits of "Monotrance" and the ragged and distorted, acid-EBM fusion of the titanium-clad "Ritual Serenade". The title track, which closes the EP, is alo sublime: a clanking industrial workout smothered in far-sighted, futurist techno synths.

Cat: AVN 035. Rel: 30 Nov 18
  1. Karhide (Departure) (3:00)
  2. Happening RN (5:53)
  3. Opportunist (5:09)
  4. Byzantine Mahogany (7:11)
  5. All Structures Are Unstable (3:33)
Review: Rhyw returns to Avian.

Following on from the producer's much lauded debut, Alex Tsiridis reemerges on the Avian label with Cave Walls (Part Two).

Tsiridis' work under the Rhyw moniker has always showcased the producer's keen ear for drawing out melody from potentially disharmonious elements - tweaking feedback components and utilising heavy filtering to generate curious hook-like riffs that dip in and out of the heady drum work with some considerable style.

On AVN035, Rhyw continues to mine this unique production aesthetic, eking out both pleasing tones and more discordant sonic anomalies in equal measure across a handful of new recordings.

Beatless pieces All Structures Are Unstable & Karhide lean tentatively towards Cluster-esque Krautrock in their execution - the former, an acrimonious deconstruction of the producer's dance floor work, and the latter owing more to the Noise & Drone music found elsewhere on the Avian label.

Byzantine Mahogany, the first of three more functional pieces, finds its hook element in a growling, low slung saw, driven hot & buoyed by dry, shuffling percs & Happening RN features that same twisted bass, this time with added urgency. Opportunist completes the triad and finds Tsiridis in yet more high octane territory, sonically shifted more to the high frequencies found on Cave Walls (Part One) - cementing a now characteristic bent to the producer's work.

  2. Grintstone (James Ruskin remix) (7:05)
  3. Flint (OVR remix) (7:29)
  4. Komatiite (Broken English Club remix) (4:53)
Review: Blueprint bosse James Ruskin has gathered together an impressive cast-list of producers to rework tracks from Rommek's recent trilogy of EPs, Set In Stone. Ruskin is naturally one of these, and his creepy, atmospheric revision of "Grintstone" - all mangled metallic noise, slowly throbbing orchestration, distorted drums and booming bass - is undoubtedly one the EP's highlights. Also impressive is OVR's moody, hybrid electro/broken techno take on "Flint", while Blueprint veteran Oliver Ho steals the show (as Broken English Club) with a clanking and spacey version of "Komatiite" that fixes poignant, melancholic chords and barely audible spoken word vocals to a heavy slo-mo beat. Meanwhile, if thrusting industrial techno is your thing, check out the pots-and-pans percussion and intense bass of Makaton's version of "Obsidian".

  1. Ross From Friends - "High Energy" (5:47)
  2. Dave Aju - "Wayahed" (6:10)
  3. Duplex - "Isolator" (6:06)
Review: While the release of nd_baumecker's "Panoramabar 07" mix may have been delayed indefinitely due to "licensing issues", this second vinyl sampler has happily made it past the lawyers. Like its predecessor, it contains a trio of previously unreleased tracks. Ross From Friends kicks things off with "High Energy", a surprisingly cheery and sun-kissed blend of bouncy deep house drums, lilting pedal steel guitar motifs and drowsy, "Twin Peaks" style chords. Sometime Circus Company regular Dave Aju impresses via the cut-up vocal samples, melodious sub-bass, and broken house rhythms of "Wayahed", while Duplex steals on the show on side B with the intertwined synthesizer melodies, rush-inducing positivity and shuffling lo-fi deep house beats of "Isolator".

  2. Incisors (5:38)
  3. The Swelling (2:40)
  4. Sister (remix) (6:25)
  5. Pecking Order (7:55)
Review: Rrose continues to serve up occasional slabs of mind-altering techno gold, primarily on the Eaux label the producer established in 2012 after parting company with Sandwell District. This year-ending missive is as impressive as it is mind-altering and thought provoking. Opener "Beware of Shells" delivers a trippy and intoxicating blend of rhythmic modular noise and foreboding electronics, before the creepy "Incisors" leads us gently by the hard towards peak-time techno dancefloors. Elsewhere, "The Swelling" serves up buzzing, mangled white noise, "Sister (Remix)" is a psychedelic, mid-tempo modular techno chugger, and closing cut "Pecking Order" is a particularly dystopian chunk of otherworldly ambient.

Carousel EP (140 gram vinyl 12" + insert)
Cat: WSR RC1. Rel: 12 Nov 18
  1. Siren (7:03)
  2. Innocent (7:06)
  3. Carousel (6:42)
  4. Keeper (7:22)
Review: Irish producer Ruff Cherry has so far left a small trail of breadcrumbs for any seekers switched on enough to follow, from an early 12" on A Sagittariun's Elastic Dreams to a pair of singles on Midgar, but now the mysterious artist lands on the increasingly intriguing Well Street label and the results are fantastic. "Siren" is an ear-snagging trip through driving but non-standard beat formations shot through with a dubby melancholy, while "Innocent" heads into weirder territory with more audacious sound design and plenty of voluminous bass swells. "Carousel" keeps things fractured and bleepy, while "Keeper" focuses on tribal percussive intonations and a brooding atmosphere to get fully immersed in.

Cat: BP 053. Rel: 05 Dec 18
  1. Domwen (6:40)
  2. Screwface (5:10)
  3. Okt (4:29)
Review: UK techno dons James Ruskin and Mark Broom are back at it again on Blueprint with three slabs of upfront peak time material that packs brains to match brawn. "Domwen" is a delirious workout that revolves around a mad-eyed synth hook to make late night ravers fly off the handle. "Screwface" is equally ear-catching with its snarling electro lead bending and flexing around the stern beat, and then "Okt" bowls in with yet more oscillating acrobatics to shock out your local techno dungeon. You hardly need assuring of the quality these two can conjure up, but suffice it to say if you're after tough and inventive fist-shakers, this 12" has got you covered.
