Drome Tapes EP1 (140 gram vinyl 12" + insert)
Cat: TABR 043. Rel: 23 Jul 18
  1. Paradize Disowned - "Paradize Disowned"
  2. DJ Zero One - "Gee Lee"
  3. Syndrome - "Rubbish Two"
  4. V-Room - "X-Centrik"
  5. Paradize - "Infected By C.O."
Review: Tabernacle aren't as known for their reissue work, but here they've made an exception to shine a light on a truly astounding hidden gem lost in the dry ice haze of the early 90s. Phuture Classical Appendix A originally came out on cassette in 1992 on Drome Tapes in the Netherlands, showcasing a low key selection of artists exploring the limits of deep, dark techno and house. Now spread across three 12" releases, these treasured curios now get the widespread release they deserve, leading in with the haunting self-titled track from Paradize Disowned before the gritty techno throb of "Gee Lee" by DJ Zero One. Considered in their execution and immensely evocative of the underbelly of early rave culture, these releases are ones that discerning old-skool heads will not want to miss.

  1. Reverse Fall (7:18)
  2. Incision (4:39)
  3. Blackbox (7:35)
  4. Empty Whip (5:50)
Review: When he started his career as Phase Fatale, Hayden Payne was still living in New York and contributing to fellow industrial techno noisenik Dom Febrow's Hospital Productions label. Now based in Berlin, Payne's latest excursion is being released by one of Germany's most storied labels, Ostgut Ton. Naturally, there's no let up in the intensity of Phase Fatale's productions, as intense, foreboding and mind-altering opener "Reverse Fall" - think trancey, psychedelic arpeggio lines, EBM riffs and thunderous beats - emphatically proves. "Incision" sounds like a loving tribute to percussion-loving, dark-side industrial outfits SPK and Test Department, while "Blackbox" and "Empty Whip" take contrasting approaches to industrial techno with equally impressive results.

Wilson Phoenix 02 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: WP 02. Rel: 13 Aug 18
  1. Expansion
  2. Space Being
  3. Field Control
Review: The buzz around the first Wilson Phoenix release was huge - good luck finding a copy of that one! The mysterious techno entity returns for round two and delivers the goods once more with some razor sharp club cuts that smartly straddle vibes without losing their way. "Expansion" is a fist-pumping, 90s-indebted techno workout with an urgent stomp at its heart - the pointed Motor City stabs and raw 909 drums are a gift for anyone wanting to whip the crowd up. "Space Being" is a wilder affair with bright and bold synth leads splattered over a sizzling electro beat. "Field Control" mans the B side with a robotic throwdown that should tickle electro, wave, new beat and house heads as much as techno fiends.

  2. XME (A Quiet Ceremony mix) (6:07)
  3. One Night Stand (6:19)
  4. One Night Stand (Slow Drumapella mix) (5:33)
Review: Miguel Barros aka Spanish pop-house hero Pional is up next on Phonica, doing what he does best on the XME EP. It could quite possibly be his most interesting EP yet. This follows up some terrific releases by him recently on Permanent Vacation, Hivern Discs and Counter Records. Glittering FM tones outline a deep and emotive groove on "XME" while the Quiet Ceremony mix up next ventures down deeper and more hypnotic territory. On the flip, the Madrid native delivers an eerie minimal techno composition on "One Night Stand" with its sparse and introverted groove giving the emotive vocals an added sense of isolation. The Slow Drumapella mix isn't as morose - by contrast, it injects a nice sense of bounce and groove into it.

Mutant 2 (12")
Cat: ELLB 001. Rel: 19 Jul 18
  1. Mutant Pulse (feat Paradigm Shift) (8:39)
  2. Mutant Radio (7:32)
Review: Fresh from reworking Remake's 1992 progressive house cover of Vangelis' "Blade Runner" theme, Maceo Plex returns to the Ellum Audio imprint he co-founded with Alta in 2011. This time round, he's got company, too, with veteran Texas outfit Paradigm Shift (whose "Requisition" was featured on Plex's recent Fabric mix CD) lending a hand on title track "Mutant Pulse". It's a typically atmospheric, peak-time-friendly affair, with trippy female spoken world vocals weaving in and out of an alien techno groove and spine-tingling pads reminiscent of the Moby classic "Go". On the flipside, "Mutant Radio" is an altogether darker and more hypnotic interpretation, with spaced-out stabs and ghostly chords accompanying Plex's fuzzy, on-point grooves.

Trans (clear vinyl 12")
Cat: REKIDS 122. Rel: 04 Jul 18
  1. Trans (Dixon Retouch) (7:24)
  2. Trans (Underground Resistance Hamtramck remix) (8:14)
Review: In its original form, "Trans" was one of the dancefloor highlights of Matt Edwards' second album as Radio Slave, 2017's Feel The Same. Here, the dark and stylish original - think alien new wave synth-pop from 1983 re-imagined as a Panoramabar-friendly workout - is given a makeover by two titans of the electronic music scene: Innervisions overlord Dixon and Detroit techno stalwarts Underground Resistance. Naturally, Dixon's rub is weightier and more obviously big room-friendly than Edwards album cut, with the foreboding original synth bassline and bubbly electronic flourishes being joined by weightier drum hits and bold new melodic motifs which fire "Trans" towards the stratosphere. In contrast, Underground Resistance's revision is fuzzier, wonkier and more hypnotic, albeit with a little disco surprise here and there.

  1. Van Pelt (4:53)
  2. Shadow Harp (6:15)
  3. Dissolve (5:43)
  4. Slicing (5:51)
Review: UK tech-bass specialist Randomer has undoubtedly become one of the most prolific names across this country's dance scene. The talented DJ and producer has promoted his style since those first Hemlock killers began to surface, and he has kept on pushing that sound into new platforms, such as Holland's mighty Dekmantel. This new EP opens with the percussive bang and thrash of "Van Pelt", before launching into an all-out techno attack via "Shadow Harp". On the B-side, "Dissolve" blasts out yet more organized chaos, this time in the form of off-kilter drum sequences that verge on the tribal, leaving the title track to spin the drums into a total frenzy - backed by a radiant industrial bass that bounces from wall to wall. Highly recommended!

Review: Leipzig's Fauxpas Musik returns with another collection of evocative electronica from a label staple - Berlin's Steffen Laschinski aka Rising Sun. He runs the labels Kristofferson Kristofferson, Beautiful Things Don't Ask For Attention and Reality Used To Be A Friend Of Mine. His eighth release for Fauxpas features four highly engineered cuts such as the moody and cinematic tension of "Worked Up" which builds in suspense, the textured and elaborate dreamscape of "Antares" and the soulful/life-affirming epic "Above" featuring a powerful vocal performance (that's full of conviction) and soars above the powerful impacting breakbeats. A strong EP from one of German electronic music's most underrated producers.

Sedimentary (heavyweight coloured vinyl 12")

  1. Grey Wacke (7:11)
  2. Grintstone (6:35)
  3. Arkose (6:10)
  4. Flint (5:07)
Review: Rommek has hit a rich vein of form since pitching up on Blueprint Records a couple of years back. Sedimentary is his fourth solo EP for James Ruskin and Richard Polson's long running label, and once again features some seriously good material. We're particularly enjoying the electro-influenced swing of broken techno opener "Grey Wacke", where pulsating riffs slightly reminiscent of Orbital classic "Walk Now" buzz around foreboding chords and fizzing, mind-altering electronics. There's plenty to set the pulse racing elsewhere, though, from the dystopian industrial techno heaviness of "Grintstone" and rubbery, broken techno bounce of "Arkose", to the unsettling, sub-bass driven ambient trip that is wayward closer "Flint".

  1. Broken Spell (6:03)
  2. Skywards (5:29)
  3. A New Day (5:38)
  4. Disjointed Route (5:01)
Review: Rising star and all round nice guy John Shima has gone on record as saying it was a dream to work with B12 man Steven Rutter, whose work from the early 1990s onwards has been a constant source of inspiration. Predictably, the duo's first collaborative EP is something of a far-sighted, intergalactic treat. Opener "Skywards" sets the tone, wrapping melancholic chords, poignant melodies, rumbling bass and deep space electronics around a soft-focus IDM beat. There's a classic "Artificial Intelligence"-era deep electro feel about the similarly beautiful and melodious "Broken Spell", while "A New Day" pulses and throbs impressively via the use of a stabbing but spacey bassline and shimmering chords. Closer "Disjointed Route", a slow motion but intensely picturesque affair, is also sublime.

Review: Leipzig's PH17 are back with their third release and its second compilation on vinyl. They invited six artists to contribute a track on Second Wave - a collection that showcases electronic music dwelling on the outer limits. From S. Olbricht & Abris Gryllus' immersive ambient journey entitled "Trood", the frantic polyrhythmic madness of "Kalimbopolis" by Berlin by way of New York City's M.E.S.H, the lo-fi darkwave electro of Privacy's "No Discussion" and Daniel McCormick aka Ital aka Releaxer's epic rave reconstruction The Enemy Within".

  1. Horres (3:14)
  2. Tsalimia (8:41)
  3. Lefkes (6:14)
  4. Hofta (5:30)
Review: After a lengthy stint, and what resulted in a healthy working relationship for several years, Athens-based SAWF has decided to stick close to home as of late. He returns to the Kafta imprint with a fiery disposition in his sight, engulfing the airwaves with his signature swarm of sci-fi atmospherics. We're down with that. "Horres" is a swarm of noxious bass, lethal if heard at a high volume, whereas "Tsalimia" trods along at a mid tempo lull, driven forwards by a gritty, grime-centric whirlpool of hazy electronics. The B-side kicks off with the dubby minimalism of "Lefkes", a tribal abstraction that swirls effortlessly into the ether, and ends on the pouncing stomp-techno of "Hofta" - surely a big room techno tool - TIP!
