Alpha (12" repress)
Cat: OTON 107. Rel: 30 Aug 18
  1. Alpha (6:58)
  2. Quantum (6:33)
  3. Source (5:55)
  4. Ritual (7:14)
Review: It was only a matter of time before Etapp Kyle, Ukrainian's new techno king, made it onto the mighty Ostgut Ton. A flurry of releases for Klockworks and Unterton paved the way for these four new tunes on One of Berlin's most legendary institutions, and it's not hard to think about how well these murky bangers would penetrate the Berghain dancefloor. "Alpha" is a deep and cerebral techno spear with a heavy bit of dub bass at its core, and "Quantum" follows up with neat swarms of designer bleeps for the more mindful techno DJs. Over on the B-side, "Source" has all the characteristics of what we like to call 'mind-tech', or rather, the sort of gear to pulsate through the piste at the crack of dawn, which leaves "Ritual" to break the trip with a cavernous wormhole of minimal textures.

Review: Neil Landstrumm began his solo production in 1993, influenced by the Sheffield school of bleep as well as electro and Miami bass. His unique sound soon caught the ears of a wide variety of the world's finest electronic labels - going on to record for Tresor and Planet Mu among others and he remains one of the scene's innovators. Featured here are timeless classics such as "Takks" or "Sniff & Destroy" which nailed that similar kind of minimal funk that label mate Daniel Bell was creating at the time, through to the bang and clatter of frantic jams like "Swing/Jerk" and "Blam The Target" (Inhabit The Machines) which are still a true zeitgeist of early '90s UK techno.

  1. Rocket To Lee's Little Cloud (7:04)
  2. Satellite (7:58)
  3. Underwater (8:07)
Review: Sebastien Leger's last outing on All Day I Dream, February's "Lost Mirage", was one of his most melodious and ear-catching releases to date. Given that he has released a dizzying amount of music over the years, that's high praise. Happily this three-tracker is equally dreamy and immersive, with opener "Rocket To Lee's Little Cloud" offering a near perfect fusion of tactile tech-house grooves, sweeping (synth) strings, wispy chords and yearning melodies. He ups the tempo on the sparkling "Satellite", which is similar in tone and style to Isolee classic "Beau Mot Plage". Arguably best of all, though, is "Underwater", whose starry and melodious lead lines and counter-melodies come accompanied by metronomic beats, sampled choral vocals and more life-affirming chords.

  1. By This River
  2. Yoga (feat Ahu)
  3. Sanyasi
  4. Mir (feat Ahu)
Review: The Shahr Farang crew seem to be on a roll at present. Label staple Lenta maintains his position on the quiet, reflective extreme of 4/4 music, unfurling the kind of delicate minimalism and ambient that merely hints at any connection to club traditions. Long may it continue, when the quality is this high - the Pole-esque ripples of "Yoga" click and pop through gorgeous layers of melancholic melody delivered with a delicate touch, while "Sanyasi" tumbles through forlorn guitar and looming sub bass frequencies. Each piece is distinct from the others, and indeed anything else being released at present, making this record highly recommended for all intrepid sonic wayfarers.

Cat: FIREC 026. Rel: 12 Sep 18
  1. Fresh Gildans (5:44)
  2. Solar Panel (3:41)
  3. Another Late Night (5:03)
Review: Next up with his take on the electro sound is Firecracker Recordings co-head Linkwood, who looks to Motor City greats like Drexciya and Japanese Telecom on the aquatic future-funk of "Fresh Gildans" which is quite majestic in all its soulful and bass driven feel. On the flip are two deeper and more introspective cuts, with the immersive "Solar Panel" going for a hypnotic ambient house vibe, or the sublime deep techno journey "Another Late Night" taking its cues respectfully from Detroit like on the previous side. Another great EP by this stalwart of the Scottish scene, which the label best describe themselves as designed for the dancefloor, the sofa and all points in between.

R&S
Cat: RS 1814. Rel: 19 Oct 18
  1. Pulsar (7:43)
  2. Oedo 808 (5:32)
  3. Blue Moon Tree (7:54)
Review: Lone is in a glassy-eyed and loved-up mood on this fourth instalment in his excellent "Ambivert Tools" series on R&S. We're particularly enjoying the lilting, soft-focus dreaminess of A-side "Pulsar", where swelling chords and poignant synth-strings sashay seductively between a densely layered, mid-tempo breakbeat groove. The long-serving producer ratchets up the energy on low-slung electro flipside "Oedo 808", another largely dreamy affair that boasts the twin attractions of raw acid style bass and ear-catching TR-808 drum machine cowbells. To finish things off, Lone serves up the EP's most blissfully loved-up moment, "Blue Moon Tree", whose bouncy pianos, fluttering vocal samples and languid chords sound like they were tailor-made for sunrise.

  1. Monster (VIP) (5:52)
  2. Eddies (Batu remix) (5:20)
  3. Carpet Bombing (5:24)
Review: Following up his impressive 01deas full-length on the legendary R&S earlier this year, Zoot Records head honcho The Maghreban is back on the label with some tripped-out and percussive techno workouts. "Monster VIP" is a woozy and slow-burning thriller on the junglist tip. The Londoner then gets UK bass expert Batu (Timedance) to throw down a hyper aware rendition of "Eddies" which was the opening track of his album. Finally on the flip, we've got the frantic and rolling polyrhythmic madness of "Carpet Bombing".

Cat: OUT 005. Rel: 04 Oct 18
  1. Intro (1:42)
  2. Lacuna (7:15)
  3. Black Rainbow (7:14)
Review: Outlaw founder Matthew Oh has always taken a pragmatic approach to releasing music, pressing up 12-inch singles only when he feels like he has something to offer to the paying public. Happily, he's reached that moment again, some 18 months on from his previous Outlaw excursion. Many will no doubt enjoy title track "Lacuna", a hushed and hugely atmospheric early morning techno shuffler full of dubbed-out electronic riffs, crackling aural textures, ultra-deep breakdowns and hypnotic, locked-in beats. "Black Rainbow" offers a bolder and slightly tougher take on spacey, Detroit influenced dub techno, while "Intro" is a gloriously atmospheric blend of fuzzy field recordings and gentle ambient chords.

  2. Don't Go! (EJECA remix) (6:26)
  3. Don't Go! (Gerd Janson VIP dub) (6:17)
Review: Here, Gerd Janson and Ejeca offer an answer to an age-old question: how do you remix a stone cold classic? Their various versions of Awesome 3 and Julie McDermott's 1992 hardcore anthem "Don't Go" (whose iconic vocal remains instantly recognizable 26 years on) are relatively reverential, utilizing almost all of the original version's key ingredients (rave stabs, bustling breakbeats and one of the rave era's bounciest piano riffs). Janson's "Remix" and "VIP" dub versions operate at a slightly slower tempo to suit house dancefloors, but retain the energy and rush-inducing bliss associated with the Awesome 3 cut. Ejeca takes a different approach, slamming down a stomping four-to-the-floor take rich in mind-altering stabs, MK style cut-up vocals and heavy percussive build-ups.

  2. Paradize - "Violet, Noir, Jaune"
  3. Bitch & Bites - "Techdrea In Andromeda (Time/Space)"
  4. Bouhouz - "Fairy Tale"
Review: Tabernacle have an enviable instinct for visionary talents in the well-ploughed field of purist machine-powered techno and house, and their various artist releases can be a goldmine for new names to add to your watch list. So it goes on this latest transmission, kicking off with the dusty Chicago house styles of Models Over 18 before switching stance drastically to the splayed out tonal investigations of Paradize. Bitch & Bites are equally subversive, shirking dancefloor demands to apply classic techno motifs to a fractured but ultimately inviting strain of hardware-honed techno. That leaves it to Bouhouz to round the EP off with a gentle murmur of synth patterns carefully composed for a spiritual, subliminal end result.
