Review: First released on Perception Records in 1991, Atomix's debut single 'STK (Eternal)' offers a musical bridge between the electro-influenced bleep techno sound that emerged from autumn 1988 onwards and the later, breakbeat-driven hardcore rave sound. Opener 'Neo Tokyo Vision' is an exciting and cutting tittilator, with massive rave stabs and a nigh-perfect balance of weight and highs, evoking the feeling of freely trawling the city at night with reckless abandon. Things grow grungier from thereon, with the likes of 'Black Mesa' and 'Burned Out' hearing the EP grow increasingly soily, subterranean.

Review: Adam Beyer's notable techno label Drumcode seems to be as busy as ever of late. The label here rolls out a fourth part of its ongoing A Sides series, which is now up to volume 12. Though the Swede himself doesn't feature, some of his trusty sidemen do starting with Chris Avantgarde who brings big room, hard techno energy to 'The Last Time'. Bry Ortega keeps it just as intense with the machine-gun like synth fire of 'Discover 9', Massano brings some brighter synth loops to the stomping 'Betraya' and Spektre shut down with a mix of hardcore, trance and techno potency on 'Too Far Gone.' Some great DJ weaponry here, for sure.

Review: The Spanish Hypnotic Collective label attempts to capture its take on the Detroit Legacy with what looks like a new series of various artists' EP. There is plenty of Motor City soul in the gorgeous synths of Cignol's muted acid and deep house opener 'Distance' which is a soothing and reverential groove, but then its pure party from Barce, Alex Martin offers up 313 style tech and three further tunes on the flip explore blistering electro with high-speed funk and cosmic intent. Mission accomplished and we're already looking forward to the next one.

Starting with a subtle mind-melter from Crystal Distortion, 'ESV', we move into increasingly propagandistic vibes from R-Zac - whose 'LSP23' sounds like a numbers station stuck on loop and set to a technoization - and then followed by 69db and Meltdown Mickey's 'Drivin', which returns things to their initial minimal but maddening state.

For this one, the Uruguayan label represses a rare and hard-to-find gem that takes us back to the naughties and the heyday of the breaks era. Spanish artist Deibeat is behind the beats first up with the turbocharged electro-funk of 'Scanned State'. Mmmh's 'Be My Way' is then a hurried and hopping electro-tinged cut with quick beats and cosmic energies and Elias Sternin's 'Gato De Piria' brings dark synth drones which search across gritty drum machine rhythms. Artesano Titer closes down with another colourful and jittery future rhythm on 'Leitmotiv.'

Gianluca Pellerano has a definite video game soundtrack influence lingering over his track like he's battling an end of level boss. Review: Since kicking off in 2021 Future Romance has leapt into action as a standout presence in the contemporary techno scene, matching cinematic atmospheres with crisp production and spine-tingling crescendos. It's a theme which maintains on this latest release - a various artists split under the banner Collector I. Label regulars Einmusik and Solee team up for 'Mariposa', a brooding, achingly beautiful peak time weapon. Emiliano Demarco and Maxi Veg are equally bombastic on the pristinely sculpted 'Sombras', while Several Definitions makes a more explicit move in the direction of big room trance. Review: The DDS label, short for Distort Decay Sustain, has given artists like Demdike Stare a platform on which to express themselves through over the years, but it was really Equiknoxx's LP from 2016, Bird Sound Power, which opened their doors to a whole new category of listener. In fact, it was that LP, with all its stunning, dub-wise experimentation, which has led to Mark Ernestus being called up for a pair of remixes. As you probably know, this is a rare case, so this 12" is sort of a special piece - "Congo Get Slap" is given the pure Ernestus rundown, with a charging, minimalistic percussion being swallowed whole by the raucous dub stabs caving in from all angles; the remix of "Flagged Up" is a much slower, more brooding affair in the same vein as the mythical cuts residing on imprints like Basic Channel and Chain Reaction - nothing but deep, meditative dub flexing for the mind. Review: Last year's superb Pura Lempuyang album has been pulled apart and served up on a couple of separate 12"s and this is the second one. It comes on limited turquoise vinyl and offers four cuts of stylish deep dub and techno. Fletcher's 'It's A Virtue' goes first with taught, twanging bass and grubby basslines then Mike Schommer's 'Kingmaker' offers liquid dub funk with watery pads and hissing static. Nicolas Barnes picks it up a little with a darker but still warm dub techno roller in 'Sonic Dial' and Redrop's 'Genesis' is the more driving of the lot but again exists right on the ocean floor.

Review: Jason Garcia, A Garcia, and M Kretsch all get the nod on this new 'Family Values EP from the Cryovca label. The techno trip finds some superb common ground in uncommon sounds here with 'Stuck In Purgatory' kicking off in urgent fashion with bumping rubbery drums and eerie pads. 'Iichabod' then slips into deep and rolling dub techno territory and 'Rock The Dance Bah' brings some playful bass guitar loops to a snappy rhythm. 'Stillgar' shows yet another look - gritty, subterranean techno full of suspenseful pads. There is plenty of real innovation across these four fantastic cuts.

Review: Drumcode's Elevate series hits a third instalment here and this time it is a three tracker with solo cuts from three big names. Tini Gessler kicks off with 'Nothing Expected' which is a teeth-gritting and white knuckle techno roller. Marie Vaunt serves up monstrously large and slamming kicks on 'Technology' and then runs them through with brutal synth lines that spray about with their own dark energy. It's a truly edgy cut before BEC's 'Humanoid' layers up hard tech drums that slam down firmly with a warped lead which leads you late into the night. A trio of high impact weapons, for sure.

'Chapter 6' then gets more raw and lumpy, with woody hits and heady drum rotations locking you in before 'Chapter 7' takes you up amongst the stars with more trippy cosmic keys and floats pads, then 'Chapter 8' rounds out with more dark, subterranean techno moodiness.

Review: The Aphrology EP marks a killer induction into the MOS Deep annals of excellence from Ksoul & Muteoscillator, the Italian duo who have impressed intermittently with their dense brand of techno for Uzuri and Kinda Soul Recordings (which is overseen by Ksoul himself). The two part "Criminology" opens proceedings face up, with the restrained acid leanings of the opening gambit slightly overwhelmed by the unrelenting modulated brutality of its subsequent partner. Face down and MOS Deep ringleader Aroy Dee sneaks in with his own edit of "Aphrology" before Ksoul and Muteoscillator can demonstrate the title track's prowess - it's Dee to a tee, taking the well judged house that swells with ever menacing machine squeals and adding his own subtle percussive embellishments.

Review: Earlier this year, the Lazy Reflex Concept label launched with a mind-mangling techno EP featuring three tracks apiece from 543FF and Jeroen Search. On this sequel they've stuck to the same formula, though this time they're offering up cuts from three different artists. Lenson handles side A, first wrapping psychedelic electronics and faintly foreboding stabs around a surging peak-time groove on 'Denied Process', before adding alien-sounding bleep melodies to a pumping rhythm track on 'Tranquiliser'. 543FF provides an accompanying remix that toughens up the beats (it's definitely more tribal sounding) while making the accompanying elements sound sparse and spacey. Elsewhere, Sculpturalism's 'Psychonauts on Manali' mixes industrial strength grooves with droning chords and dub techno motifs, while Miller & Keane's 'Acid Intervention' is a TB-303-sporting late-night throb-job.

Review: Kalahari Oyster Cult releases music as wonderfully unique as the label's own name. This one is pounding techno from Maara with a distinctly equine theme - and not just in the title and artwork. The opener has neighing horse sounds bursting out of the mix at various points as the high speed drums canter along with a warm, rich, deep but captivating sense of pace. 'Juicy Tracksuit' keeps up the quickness with buffed metal kick bouncing beneath psychoactive chords and slurred vocals. There is more pent up and kinetic energy with 'God Save The Bender'. Review: Ever the champion of brains and brawn in equal measure, Maceo Plex makes his debut appearance on Drumcode with this punchy beast of a single. "Conjure Dreams" features plenty of Plex signifiers, from the rounded and rowdy bassline pump to the haunting tone of the synth lines, neatly packaged in a chunky framework of big room drums. "Conjure Floyd" meanwhile burrows into more minimal territory where the tones are amelodic and the percussion takes the lead, calling to mind the restraint and tension of classic M_nus productions where so much could be said with so little.

Review: Based in New York City and famed for his sonic experimentalism, Madteo is back with another alluring three tracker on Honest Jon's. The music is all about rugged machine funk, busted loops and lo-fi house grooves that recall the greats like Moodymann. 'Str8 Crooked' is the most loose and clattering of the lot with its knackered bassline stay down low. The amusingly titled 'Build Back Better Sweatshops' is scuffed up deep house a la STL and 'Episcopi Vagantes' is an epic 16 minute tune with spinning hi hats, wonky synthesis and plenty of cavernous soundscapes to explore at 5am on a darkened dance floor.

Review: Electro monarchs Maelstrom, Locked Club and RLGN return to EP-making with a four-track array of acid bangers, happily working together on a split record to celebrate the pan-European electro scene. Their offering is unequal in quantity (2 Maelstrom and 3 Locked Club tunes) but is resolutely equal in heat; 'LA Nuit Est A Toi' is Maelstrom's standout, bleepy and suffocating in its generative, janky fright. Locked Club and RLGN follow up, 'Kill Me' being the best and most suicidally pushy techno track to soundtrack our nightmares.

Review: Alan Dixon launches his brand new label Love Attack, the Multi Periodic Oscillations EP being a three tracker from Man Power at his curious techno best. Deep, dark and dubby, not to mention suitable for 3am needs everywhere, it opens with 'Cepheid Variable Part 1', 11 minutes of twists and turns, revolving around a hypnotic groove. Its baby brother 'Part 2' keeps the vibes intact before 'Applegate Mechanism' closes the EP in a straight up dancefloor fashion. Review: Raiju Manah has been making music for well over a decade under various names. He's released on some big labels and always brings the rawness to his tracks. Now he is back with a new single on the Triamb label that comes with a wealth of great remixes. The original is 'Iron Age' and it is a raved up techno track with huge siren-like stabs, cantering drums and scraping percussion. Esther Duijn remixes it into a bulky, muscular banger and 'The Noize' is then a fizzing, spitting tune with caustic textures. MSKD remixes this one into something bright and melodic and then an outro version mangles some synths and vocals into something dark.

Review: Havern is a club night and record label that was founded in Tamaki Makaurau, Aotearoa in New Zealand by Keepsakes and Jaded Nineties Raver. It recently dropped its first EP and now continues to make a mark with this second techno offering. Mani Festo is the artist responsible for what is a high-octane, white-knuckle ride starting with 'Hunter' which has raw percussive textures and slamming drums. The Peder Mannerfelt remix brings more twisted metal textures and heady loops, the 'Swarmm' falls over itself it is that urgent, with shooting lasers and twitchy pads all adding to the anxious feel. 'Poison' and 'Machine' round out this most visceral of EPs.

Review: Peder Mannerfelt's high-sheen techno is in an advanced state of mutation at this point in time, and so it finds a perfect home on Blawan and Pariah's equally non-conformist Voam. This is the third EP the plucky Swede has graced the label with, and there's no shortage of fresh and fierce fireworks setting off across all four tracks. 'Pumping Plastics' is centred around staccato stabs that sound like a template for a hard dance genre which is yet to exist. 'Vankelmotor' has lithe, creeping textural work which sounds like rubber on rubber in the pleasure parlour while the band donks on. 'Eurotrashed' has a grubbier, mechanical techno impetus which fires off pistons of percussive pressure in pursuit of any remaining shreds of sanity, a quarry which remains elusive as we derail into the twitchy tension of 'Liquid Rattan Mainframe'. Superlative, in all the best ways.

Review: It's time to strap yourselves in for another bumpy techno trip at the hands of the Eya label. Manuk kicks off with surging drums and cantering synth lines that all face into a future space on elastic basslines. Oli Silva will be known atop any fans of Craig Richards' The Nothing Special label as that is where he debuted backed in 2017 and firstly here he goes solo on 'Mutant Mindset,' a twisted bit of cyborg techno funk. Then he links with regular collaborator Manuk for the airy jungle breaks of 'Multiple Minglings' before a punchy analogue Hi-Ryze Freedom mix closes out.

Review: Sanderson Dear's Stasis Recordings released the original Time Capsule compilation in 2020 - a 20-track exploration of ten different ambient techno artists exploring two ideas each in compact form for a box set of 7"s. Now the label has revisited some of the project's standout moments and offered a chance to enjoy extended versions gathered on a single 12". From Maps Of Hyperspace shaping out atmospheric halls of synth work on 'Beta' to Glo Phase offering some gorgeous, sparkling grooves on 'Fire Flies', there's plenty of ground covered on this release. Of course the mighty John Beltran is a big drawer too, and his typically stellar 'The Descendent' doesn't disappoint in its full extended version.

Review: Hammer time heroics from Greece's Marceldune right here as she continues to explore her unique fusion. Two parts squat party, one part IDM, three parts techno; there's a wily sense of energy and freeform fury running throughout each track. Both 'Flatten My Nerves' and 'Class Disobedience' are on the stampy side of things; lo-fi, soft-focus and raw as hell. Deeper into the EP, the brilliantly titled 'It's OK To Have No Fun' brings a little trance into the blend (especially with the industrial strength breaks of Ascion's remix) while 'Preternatural' seals the deal with a crunchy European techno stomp. Crunchy.

Review: In an age when the techno shoved in your face is often the reductive bastard offspring of hard style and throwaway trance, releases like Maroki's latest for the relentlessly great Lobster Theramin are exactly what we need to keep faith. Caution, though - use what's here sparingly, as these be monsters. More than living up to the EP's name, Pots & Pans packs four tracks that emphasise playful and at times erratic percussion, used in similar ways across the lot but to different ends. The title number is a low-slung growler made for horizontal fist-punching, 'Boiler' drops dubstep-influenced breaks into the mix while stretching our minds through a wormhole - arguably the subtle winner here - while 'San Andras' opts for bouncing high energy acid worbles, and 'Hasnoot' goes for a main stage lengthy build followed by driving rhythms. Nothing you've not heard before, but all incredibly effective and perfectly executed.

Review: Having built his reputation via a trio of must-check EPs on Bokeh Versions, Mars89 transfers to Alex Hall's "mutant electronics" imprint Natural Sciences. The producer is a neat fit on the imprint, with "2020" containing a quartet of creepy, hard-wired, industrial-tinged cuts that seem eerily fitting for these troubled times. He begins with the bone-rattling beats, machine-gun percussion hits, ricocheting metallic clonks and gut-punching bass of "GoodThing", before successfully fusing mutilated industrial sounds and paranoid rhythms on "JoyCamp". Over on side B, "DayOrder" is a strangely swung slab of mind-altering electronica that defies easy description, while "MiniLuv" is a thumping stomp through lo-fi techno territory in the company of a steroid-fired monster.
