It's a punchy take on tech house from the off, with 'Hazy Recall (Airdrop mix)''s off-grid beats swinging in from all directions with same the potency as a Mike Tyson uppercut. 'Drown It Out' has a garage swing to it as it slips and sides as fluidly as Mayweather's defence and 'Shadow Boxing' floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee. Review: Italian label Weapons of Mass Love kicks off with its first vinyl release here - and a pretty one it is too with an all-pink 12". Riko Forinson is the man in charge of the originals and he pairs hefty drum weight with cosmic synth work on the house slash techno opener 'Portamento'. 'Hi' has some leggy drum funk at its core with detuned chords, filtered vocals and squelchy effects adding the details. 'Door Bell' picks up with some squelchy electronic house funk and then a version of 'Hi' featuring Benoit and Butane's Glide remix of 'Portamento' close out an atmospheric house EP.

Review: Warehouse Music boss Mello Dee doesn't muck around when making his robust, wall rattling house tunes. This time around he tackles a big Basement Jaxx tune and reworks it to his own powerful ends. 'Red Alert' (Mella Dee Panel Beater mix) has gigantic drums and edgy synth loops with the original's ionic vocals loop to insanity over the top. It's pure fire. On the flip, the Mella Dee Holding On mix is more dubby and grainy, with just as heavy drums but a little more movement and no vocal, instead just straight up dance floor action.

Review: Upstairs Asylum Recordings is one of the many seminal Detroit labels run by local legend Norm Talley. It's right in the middle of a busy run right now with no fewer superb run with three new EPs all dropping in quick succession. This one is a split EP with US duo Solid Gold Playaz taking care of the a-side. As always with this pair, their sounds are deep and dusty house with exquisite melodies tugging at the heart. On the flip, Gari Romalis steps up with the slick percussive skip of 'Detroit After Dark' then 'Panties' from Brian Neal brings jacked up analogue groves that lean into techno with a big fat bassline.

Review: Wavy, acidic, subtly trance-y, and resolutely deep. BOHM drops four pieces on the right side of tech for snobs to get on board (we're not getting involved in that), which owe plenty to the likes of John Tejada, A Sagittariun's early work, and others that have mastered the art of crafting tracks that we can safely listen to softly and still find plenty to talk about, but heard loud and in a club will take on a new, all-commanding power. At least that's the case with 'Light Transmission' and 'Solar Limit', which open the scoring here. Moving forward, B-side pair 'Unsolved Origin' and 'Monarch Monster' take some complexities out of the equation, respectively opting for more pared back bounce and stripped down, old-school hued electro. Both also work very well indeed - hence the recommendation here.

That's certainly the case with this surprise EP from rising star Porter Brook, a Sheffield-born member of the Groundwork family whose dark, atmospheric and claustrophobic take on techno - with more than a dash of UK bass influence - is as industrial as the city of his birth. The pair cook up two versions of the same cut here. 'The Signal' (Night mix) is a dramatic cut with an epic baseline and space-age synth craft over chunky drums that are constantly on the rise. 'The Signal' (Day mix) is a much more melodic and light cut but has just as much low-end heft. Review: Thomas Brinkmann released his celebrated Max Ernst series between 1998 and 2000 and picked up a hardcore following as a result. Now some 25 years later it gets a special anniversary reissue with six of the unreleased tracks all served up by Third Ear. The A-side has three 'Quila' cuts - they range from heavily percussive and alive with fizzing synths to lumpy, slow motion and funky beatdown via glitchy minimal with jazzy keys. The flip side has three 'Romy' tunes - again they range from slow motion and languid to deft electronica detailed with spoken words, Afro percussive patterns and rumbling basslines.

Review: It appears to be relatively early days for Philip Biedermann, who kicked off his label The Machine Dream in 2022 with his debut release. However, as is evident on his second drop, there's a canny blend of sincerity in his vintage sound which speaks to a longer investment in analogue techno. The composition and arrangement on 'Cybernetics' in particular has a dramatic tension which lends itself to the warm, seedy characteristics of the synths which make the track. The vibe maintains across the EP, with 'Digital Emotions' tipping towards electro without ever resorting to obvious tropes. Biedermann has a synth-rich sound all his own, ensuring his tracks will be easy to spot in the mix.

Review: You can always rely on Blawan to deliver the brutalist techno goods and that's exactly what he does here. This new double 12" on Ternesc opens with UK funky drums and wild percussive patterns as well as some signature mangled voices. There is also hyper speed industrial minimalism on 'The Sithe' that captures the sound of a factory in meltdown, spangled synths and eerie dub atmospheres on 'Silver' and unrelenting rave techno on 'Fizz City.' Add in two more hard to define fusions of mutant sound design, busted rhythms and dystopian moods and you have a spell binding EP indeed.

Review: After having two of his earlier tunes remodelled by Carl Craig and Mike Huckaby thanks to Sushitech, Detroit's Delano Smith re-emerges on the label with a double pack of tunes made with Brawther under the D&B Productions. That moniker has more to do with the pair's name rather than a suddenly conversion to drum & bass, although there's a love of dubby effects and deep bass power here that - at a stretch - could be said to be in common. The six tracks - Symbiosis' 1-6 - are smooth and simple, but executed with an ear (or four) for an irresistible groove, an economic but rhythmic keyboard stab and a knack for squeezing something nicely soulful from the barest ingredients. Nice work indeed.

Review: Eclectic technoizer Basic Bastard locks arms with Detroiter Orlando Voorn, their dual sonic output being the new 'Drama' EP. The three-tracker is nothing short of a sonic adventure, spanning acid, to dub, to uncategorisable entrainments. Bastard's original 'Drama' nails the art of the acid loop, a tricky tactic that is much less masterable than one might think. Review: Phil Berg drops a new one, 'Raid', via Setaoc Mass' SK Elevent imprint, seguing through four teeth-gritty techno numbers of the utmost immediacy and expediency. Like the immaculate inner workings of a giant snake-mech, hell-bent on seeking out and nullifying all lifeforms in its path, comes the mathematic undulations of 'Y-Axis' and the toothily electric acid zaps of 'Raid', while B-sider 'Kamino' gears us up for a final standoff with the beast. The UK titan has a recognisable take on house and techno genre that is underpinned by slamming kick and that comes to bare once more now as he lands on fellow legend Radio Slave's Rekids label. Review: Joey Beltram would likely feel you it is as much a blessing as it is a curse to have made a tune as monstrously successful and widely known as 'Energy Flash' so early in your career. Along the way, he made plenty of others that are just as effective in their mix of techno, breaks and rave. This second volume of them on the Belgian label R&S proves that. 'My Sound' is all throwback rave horns and textured metal drum sounds, while 'The Melody' has a more stripped-back but no less effective sound. 'Sub-Bass Experience' is just that - a bowel-bothering low end is the main feature with sharp hi-hats and blistering synths up top. 'The Reflex' shuts things down in marching late-night fashion.

Review: What can be said about this timeless banger that hasn't been said before? From the iconic throbs of acid to the delirious string hook, the menacing intonation of "ecstasy" to the eerie plastic strings, this is as seminal as a rave track can get. While many out there will no doubt have this jam tucked away on any number of techno compilations or cramped up on one of the original single issues, "Energy Flash" is a track more than worthy of its own luxuriant single-sided release, and in doing such a release so many years on R&S are making a powerful statement.

Review: For "Spectres", a 6-track split release, Buttechno teams up with DJ Speedsick, a Chicago-based artist, famous for his raw and uncompromising approach to sound. Together they explore sonic and textural possibilities of the extreme forms of dancefloor music employing distinct ways of sound manipulation. Buttechno's side features highly saturated textures being torn out, dissected and sewed back together with a wicked use of spectral processing. On the other side, Dj Speedsick, known for reamping his material with guitar amplifiers and cabinets, puts out tracks that bear unique sonic qualities and transform the usual sense of space and distance. Review: JP Buckle's 1998 album Flying Lo-Fi is an unsung gem of the Rephlex catalogue, full of crunchy flair and all the qualities you want in a kick-ass braindance record. Buckle has more recently been reactivated with scattered releases on Bandcamp and the like, and now he's revisited his finest hour with a remix double pack which takes us back to some of the album's standout cuts bolstered by remixes from the current crop of electronica legends. 'Flex' and 'One For Da Laydeez' sound as fantastically crunchy as they did back in the day, but it's great to hear emergent acts like Crispy Jason (spotted elsewhere on Winthorpe Electronics) getting freaky with such feisty source material. Review: Byron The Aquarius (Byron Blaylock), from Birmingham, Alabama, debuts his latest EP for French Synchrophone sublabel Phonogramme, 'Dey Know Vol. 1'. Topping up an already hugely impressive backlog of releases on the label recently - from the likes of Abacus, Steeve O'Sullivan and Vitess - the producer and water carrier adds to their catalogue for a varied scrubdown of the more militant ends of techno's sonic politic. An impressove sense of variation is achieved on the expositionally minimal 'Black Is Black', which contrasts greatly to the ensuing space-quagmires of 'Dr Devil' and then the crude, bleepy and frank analog sonics of 'Real MF From The Avenue'. Dreamy narrations of local life abound, precluding the closing 'Rock That 808!!!', a track that is far more sophisticated and well-developed in sound than its wilfully blase title might suggest.

Review: Doug Beck's sole EP, 'Lapse', is something of an obscurity: a four-tracker released back in 1996 that saw the largely unknown producer blur the boundaries between glassy-eyed progressive house, breaks, ambient house and more trance-inducing mid 90s dancefloor psychedelia. This surprise reissue on Party Tricks is well worth a listen, with our picks of a very strong bunch being the dense, melody-rich breakbeat house warmth of 'In The Tunnel', the tactile downtempo loveliness of the ambient-leaning 'Steam', and the quality prog house shuffle of title track 'Lapse'. 'Hello Kitty', a head-nodding chunk of trip-hop haziness, is also worth checking out.

Review: The Partout label turns its attention back to its UK series with a fine four tracker here from Bufo Bufo. The whole thing is steeped in UK sounds with elements of rave never far away. 'Fata Morgana' has a dumpy beat that swings from one foot to the other while old school stabs light up the track from above. 'Hidden Key' ups the ante with a more hard hitting groove and more old school motifs, this time in the bass. 'Two Minutes To Midnight' is the waviest of the lot with sirens going off, rinsing breakbeats and turbo charged bass going deep. 'Elephant's Toothpaste' then cut up a more lumpy groove with bleeps and pulses making it a soothing groove for 5am.

Review: Andre Kronert's ODD/EVEN label is billed as "a wide open space and blank canvas for friends and peers to release music that Andre himself will include is his DJ sets." Stepping into that open space for this one is Boston 168 with a trio of uncompromising techno cuts. The opener 'Oddworld' has booming bottom ends and percussion that grows ever more persuasive and raw while the acidic synths are tight and taught and tense. Review: Georgian IDM artist Gacha Bakradze commands a loyal fanbase for his enchanting emanations in the style. The latest example comes in the form of 'Forget', his most recent contribution to Turkish pushers of the craft, Oath. Fluid movements of electro clankings and modular groovework extend far and deep into a gaseous, sulphuric unknown, while airier explorations of spirituality are laid down on the vocal-sample-led 'What You Say' and the wonderfully three-chord-backboned janker, 'Form'. 'Forget' isn't a project for shallow listens; take it slow.

Review: For all his innovation, Burial has historically shied away from delivering full-throttle, mind-altering club bangers. Certainly, we can't remember him serving up anything as rhythmically intense as the two dystopian techno slammers showcased on this 12". Both feature many of his usual sonic trademarks - oodles of vinyl crackle, end-of-days aural textures and creepy ambient electronics - but are underpinned by bombastic 4/4 beats rather than sparse, post-dubstep rhythms. A-side "Pre-Dawn", a dense and incredibly intense affair, is the more energetic and instant of the two, though weirder and looser flipside "Indoors", which contains some pitched-up rave-era vocal samples and woozy riffs amongst its highlights, is also very impressive.

These are high impact cuts of body-slamming techno with deep synths and sleek rhythms. Both feature Felix Raphael and both have a subtly uplifting prog-house effect that unfolds slowly over the rich, silvery drums and deft synth drones that are all constantly on the rise. The vocals are spine-tinging, soft and tender whispers that help make this a most angelic of sounds.

Sub Basics (Temple of Sound, Lion Charge Records) opens up with a fresh dub laden track with rippling chords, tons of echo and rolling drums on 'Quarters.' Both are timeless dub outings, as you would expect from this label.

Review: New York label and party Mister Saturday always brings roughed up, raw and steamy house grooves. This new one is no exception to that unwritten rule and it comes from Russell El Butler who serves up four platters that matter. 'Blah Blah' is a brilliantly brainless house romp with vocal loops and distorted kicks making you march. 'Kruymska' is more tight and taught thanks to the pinging kick drums and molten melodies up top, while 'Tout Va Bien' is a late night cut that glistens thanks to its prickly bass and razor sharp hats. 'Alone At Pisecka 12' closes out in malfunctioning fashion to round out a wide-ranging EP.

Review: With an extensive legacy and a list of alter egos longer than your arm, Martin Damm aka Biochip C achieves a delicate balancing act on this 11 year old record, a handful of extras copies of which were recently unearthed in what can only be described as a highly fortunate 'warehouse find'. He pulls off a delicate balancing act here, letting the abrasive, industrial punk rock side of his music off the leash to frolic unhindered, while never losing sight of the needs of dancefloor and its needs across the six tracks. Highlights? Well, the title track's speedy electrofunk is highly addictive, 'Eraser' has a driving, chunky techno edge that fans of Force Inc will love, while the double dub speed grooves of 'Knobgine' and 'Liquid Silence' are forces of nature in themselves.
