Review: Essential repress! Tomas Bangalter's stone cold classic Roule 12" Trax On Da Rocks makes a return. The five tracks on offer - "On Da Rocks", "Roule Boule", "What To Do", "Outrun" and "Ventura" - have acquired legendary status, standing as sublime examples of the rough, raw end of the filter-soaked French house sound. Some 17 years since they were first released, these tracks have lost none of their madcap brilliance; if this isn't already a cherished part of your record collection, here's your chance.

Review: Both Ike Release and John Barera have been buzzing in the underground community for some time now. Ike with releases on Mister Saturday Night, Finale Sessions, Skudge and MOS and John with releases on Argot, Just Jack and Zakim. Now they turn to Ike's Episodes imprint to supply more of their upfront and dancefloor ready cuts. Starting out on the A side with the new wave acid sensibilities of "Looking Ahead" and the ferocious retro jack of "Lights Out" which are sure to set the night on fire. On the flip, the neon lit aesthetic continues with "Cosmic Divide" and "Winding Up" respectively, which conjure the ghosts from those dusty analogue machines to stunning effect.

  1. Barker & Baumecker - "Love Is A Battlefield" (10:06)
  2. Atom TM - "Stromlinien" (5:51)
  3. Anthony Parasole - "Heartbeat" (5:19)
Review: The Ostgut Ton Zehn 12" series continues apace and lands on edition Sechs, which packs a triple trouble punch from Messrs Barker & Baumecker, Atom TM and Anthony MF Parasole! Responsible for one of our favourite Ostgut artist albums, Sam Barker and Andy Baumecker kick things off with their first original production in some time and the brittle, unpredictable hardcore manifestation "Love Is A Battlefield" has us hoping the pair will return with something more substantial soon. Ten minutes of ethereal techno at it's finest! On the flip, Atom TM takes it down a stripped back and dubby route with "Stromlinien" whilst The Corner don Parasole lays waste to the dancefloor with the reverberant elasticity of "Heartbeat".

Prone (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: DSR 003. Rel: 05 Feb 18
  1. Singularity (6:19)
  2. Clay Passage (5:11)
  3. Pathos (5:32)
  4. Prone (6:40)
Review: After initial outings from phile and Ptwiggs, the Deep Seeded crew welcome phile member Barking into the fold for another excursion into crooked techno from the outer realm. There's a lingering sense of industrial malaise emanating out of "Singularity" thanks to some dense signal processing, while "Clay Passage" pings off into a strange but utterly accomplished trip into Fourth World techno that packs a serious rhythm without the need for obvious drum lines. "Pathos" matches malevolent beats and tones with dominant ambience to create a proper push 'n' pull of a track, and then "Prone" rounds the EP off with some gutsy analogue demolition for the broken techno and electro crowd to get wild to.

  2. Men On Wire (AnD remix) (7:10)
  3. A Feast For Crows (5:14)
  4. Nearby Silent Horses (5:58)
Review: Rotterdam's Bas Mooy is no stranger to a bit of techno given his involvement in the European scene as a DJ since the late '90s and as a producer since the early noughties. He's appeared on countless labels including his own Audio Assault, the dread Mote-Evolver, Perc Trax, and even for the more recent Mord. The flying Dutchman returns to the latter with four guaranteed floor missiles, the first in the shape of grainy 4/4 beats and ringing melodies under the name "Men On Wire", a tune that's rapidly turned even darker and more pumping by the no nonsense AnD duo. Over on the flip, "A Feast For Crows" bangs its 909 away left, right and centre amid chilling walls of electrifying sonics, while "Nearby Silent Horses" channels that fury into a more compact techno bombshell for the peak time. Tough and driving.

Q-Loop (12")
Cat: BASICCHANNEL CD. Rel: 12 Sep 14
  1. Q-Loop (Full Length)
  2. Q 1.2
  3. Mutism
Review: When it comes to dub techno, you need look no further than the master of the genre, Basic Channel. It's been a good long while since there was any fresh material on wax from the immortal German outfit, but now they have looked back over their archives and realised that "Q-Loop", originally found on the BCD CD release, never made its way on to vinyl, and so here it is for all the Basic Channel completists out there. There's no need to go into detail about the music, but an extended fourteen minutes of "Q-Loop" stretched across the A side can only be a beautiful thing. On the flip you can also enjoy the aqueous strains of "Q1.2" and "Mutism"s vaporous ambience, both of which are enjoying their first outings on the black stuff.

  1. Head Long
  2. Nowhere To Be Found
  3. Spiraling Down
Review: Stuart Li, better known as Basic Soul Unit, set up the Lab.our Music label last year as a low-key outlet for vinyl only transmissions from himself and others. Having introduced local Toronto talent Maxwell Church last time round, Li is back behind the buttons for Lab.our 003 which seems to retain the techno orientated slant of much of Basic Soul Unit's work in 2013. Lead track "Head Long" grips control of the A Side, rolling out one long groove of heads down techno, with the sort of windy textures and rolling toms that tend to get Ben UFO all excited. Face down, "Nowhere To Be Found" opts for a more broken feel, with the ghost of hardcore buried deep in it's DNA and the kind of stunted drums that can cause ankle fractures, and "Spiralling Down" will appeal to STL fans.

TTT 052 (12")

  1. Interform (8:33)
  2. Untunnel (8:47)
Review: Although we have nothing but respect for Will Bankhead's TTT imprint, we can't help but think that there is naturally more to say about those releases on the label which actually have beats and bass at their core. The noisier, more ambient end of the spectrum is absolute class but, as you can imagine, something of this particular ilk is easier to propose across the board. Bass Cleff is back for his second appearance on the label and it's clear that the producer is making it his goal to carve out a fresh, more house-centric sound these days. "Interform" is everything a dub techno tune should be, but that often isn't; it's full of dread bass and dubby sub tones that give way to a sparse, raw bundle of drums that stumble helter-skelter about the groove. "Untunnel" is similarly off-kilter, except that here Bass Cleff has favoured a more typical 'bass' approach to launch his 4/4 attack. This is a magnificent EP, and it's safe to say that this artist is outperforming much of the hardcore house crew. BIG.

  2. Phantom Dance #0 (Suzanne Kraft mix) (7:53)
  3. Phantom Dance #0 (Oceanic club version) (7:50)
  4. Phantom Dance #0 (Oceanic Garden version) (7:24)
Review: There has never been a moment in time where France's Versatile imprint stopped to innovate and evolve. They are, without a doubt, one off the most prolific and trusted imprints to have ever graced our dance charts over the years. As such, they're back with a collaboration from two compatriots, the renowned Pierre Bastien (Rephlex, Morphine etc etc), and relative newcomer Eddie Ladoire. The duo have only recently struck a studio relationship, thanks to an LP for Un Je-Ne-Sais-Quoi, and they are clearly in sync. Phantom Dance consists of one original, a vast, explorative journey of synths held together by a loose percussion, a remix from Suzanne Kraft, who comes through with a more dubby, beat-heavy approach, and two more mixes - the killer Oceanic club version, and the loser, ambient-rich Oceanic Garden version.

  1. From The Other Ground
  2. From The Other Ground (John Swing remix)
  3. Natural Instinct
  4. Flowing Through Time
Review: Otherwise known as one half of the Decas duo, Berlin-based Battista strikes out on his own with Records Hold Memories, an EP of thumping, raw techno tracks in the Restoration/Livejam vein, all recorded straight to tape. "From The Otherground" is all heaving kicks, a chugging angular bassline and distorted vocals buried deep in the mix; John Swing's remix meanwhile subtly flips the energy with a more rolling bassline with the kinds of loose drums that gather energy like a steam train. On the flip, "Natural Instinct" offers more unhinged 4/4, building up to a crescendo of cymbals and vocal noise; "Flowing Through Time" is even more manic, accelerating things up to 134BPM through a flurry of claps, snares and looping bass.

  1. The Hatchet (6:53)
  2. Serpent (7:53)
Review: Somewhat surprisingly, this is Amsterdam techno stalwart Patrice Baumel's first release of the year, following an action-packed 2017 that included EPs on Kompakt Extra, Afterlife and Crosstown Rebels. As expected, both tracks hit the spot. A-side "The Hatchet" boasts some seriously bouncy drums, but also the twin attractions of a relentless, dubbed-out synth riff - very hypnotic - and swirling, effects-laden vocal loops that build to a climatic conclusion. Flipside "Serpent" is deeper and more seductive, with an attractive, occasionally sparkling arpeggio style melody line that bobs and weaves around Baumel's booming, mind-altering groove.

  3. When We Used To Play (Blake Baxter remix) (4:47)
  4. Body Work (8:32)
Review: Mint Condition's choice of material to reissue is always on-point. It would be fair to say that Blake Baxter's "When We Used To Play", which was first appeared on Kevin Saunderson's KMS imprint back in 1987, is another inspired choice. While not quite as celebrated as other early Motor City jams produced by the "Belleville Three" (messers Atkins, May and Saunderson), the "Original Extended Version" boasts all the hallmarks of the then developing Detroit techno sound (think crunchy drum machine beats, restless cymbals, undulating bass and a smattering of sci-fi melodies). It comes accompanied by the obscure, electro-influenced "Bootleg Breakbeat Mix" (almost as good), a rolling and on-point Blake Baxter rework and a sweaty, Chicago style jack-track inspired by Ron Hardy's performances at the Music Box ("Body Work").

  1. The Story Of Keys & Locks (Surgeon remix)
  2. Unripe Pears (Abdulla Rashim remix)
Review: Described in typically self deprecating manner as a 'vanity imprint in the classically ornery tradition,' the Pear Growers Series is a new label from Chris Madak, best known for his mind bendingly good output as Bee Mask. The first release sees material from Madak's excellent Spectrum Spools long player When We Were Eating Unripe Pears get treated to remixes from celebrated techno artists Surgeon and Abdulla Rashim. Anyone who has heard Surgeon playing the remix on his Rinse FM show will agree that his unashamedly emotive breakbeat reworking of "The Story Of Keys & Locks" is arguably one of the simplest and most affecting remixes this year. Complementing this, Prologue and Semantica artist Abdulla Rashim delivers a take on "Unripe Pears" that will resonate with anyone that has indulged in the elusive producer's recent output on his own eponymous label.

Review: What can be said about this timeless banger that hasn't been said before? From the iconic throbs of acid to the delirious string hook, the menacing intonation of "ecstasy" to the eerie plastic strings, this is as seminal as a rave track can get. While many out there will no doubt have this jam tucked away on any number of techno compilations or cramped up on one of the original single issues, "Energy Flash" is a track more than worthy of its own luxuriant single-sided release, and in doing such a release so many years on R&S are making a powerful statement.
