  1. Upsammy - "Vacate Or Annihilate" (5:32)
  2. BFTT - "Kueen" (6:20)
  3. BFTT - "Enin" (6:04)
  4. Upsammy - "Warm Puddles" (7:23)
Review: For the third volume in the label's ongoing "Blue" series of split EPs, Whities boss Nic Tasker has recruited two rising stars: De School resident and Nous'Klaer regular Upsammy and Cong Burn alumnus BFTT. It's the former who tops and tails the EP, first brilliantly mangling electro, broken techno and bass-heavy UK techno on mutant stepper "Vacate or Annihilate", before later returning with the blissful, far-sighted electronics and rubbery machine drums of "Warm Puddles". In between, BFTT serves up two tasty treats: a suitably out-there chunk of intergalactic techno (the polyrhythmic brilliance of "Kueen") and a more melancholic, dystopian take on early morning techno hypnotism.

  1. Echos From The Past (5:59)
  2. Stones Lullaby (5:20)
  3. When The Lights Fade Away (5:34)
  4. Hearing The Solar Winds (7:10)
Review: Vincent Raude's Upwellings moniker has given us a whole selection of deep, dub techno sounds for us to engulf our minds with. We say that because we find the genre, and particularly his strain of it, to be invariably soothing both for the body and the mind. The mysterious figure appears herein for the equally imperceptible Tiefenrausch label, out of Germany, with four subtle killers. "Echos From The Past" deep dives into an aqueous world of sludgy computer grooves and dubbed-out effects, followed by the more tranquil pastures of the slow, meandering trails of "Stones Lullaby". The flipside takes us into Basic Channel territories thanks to its warm, glowing waves of delay, whereas "Hearing The Solar Winds" dissolves the whole tempo down to a murky, almost beatless assortment of sonics that have more in common with drone and industrial than dance music. We love that last track, and it's spurred us to give this tidy dub techno affair a big ol' tip!

  4. Deformis (7:04)
Review: Cartulis Music - run by Raphael Carrau and Unai Trotti out of Hackney - returns with Santiago Uribe for the label's eighth edition after previous releases by Trotti, Z@p and Reade Truth. The Montevideo Electric Recordings main man delivers a riveting selection of tracks on the Hacia Otro Norte EP, all taking their cues from hi-tech soul and sounds of the Motor City. From the rather John Tejada sounding "Normal", the deep Drexciyan electro of "Lessismorelke" to the frantic "IDT" going for that old-school techno vibe similarly pursued on labels such as Libertine or Art Of Dark at the moment - this is hot!

  4. Viste Cuando Todo (7:34)
Review: On his first EP of 2019, Santiago Uribe continues to mix and match house, techno, electro and tech-house sounds in thrillingly entertaining new ways. It's consistently tricky to pin down exactly what the Uruguayan producer is up to, though the results are uniformly impressively. Check, for example, the lo-fi alien electro-funk of "Viste Cuando Todo", the cheeky South American take on UK bleep techno that is opener "Montevideo Electric Sound" and the tipsy, bleep-fired acid house chug of "El De Los Vidrios". "Buseca Sin Vino Tinto", a bounding, bass-heavy jog through tech-tinged peak-time house madness, is also rather good.

Review: To date Ion Dumitrescu's Utopus project has only appeared on compilations, but now it scores the space in which to roam free across a whole EP that shines a light on this most promising of Romanian talents. P-Balans is the perfect place to house such wares, carrying the country's minimal love affair into intriguing new creative realms that deal in broken beat, electro and more outwardly experimental fare. "Southology" is a particularly fractured jam peppered with playful synths and tumbling drums, while "The Vision" takes on a shamanic techno stance. If you're craving propulsive tracks loaded with personality then hit up Utopus and you won't be disappointed.

  1. Lyot (original mix)
  2. Lyot (Maurizio remix)
Review: 'Lyot' is a legend of a track. By now it is considered as a genre defining tune, reflected in the appearances on countless compilations with such a goal. Naturally the Maurizio mix included here doesn't stand behind the original version. The music here is a reflection of the huge impact the Detroit techno music of the early 90s had on the Hardwax camp.

  1. Shadows & Concern (7:35)
  2. Unicorn (5:52)
Review: Belgian techno hero and Time To Express boss Peter Van Hoesen brings forth the third and final volume of Stealth, featuring selections from his stellar mix CD of the same name. "Shadows & Concern" is the kind of relentless and hypnotic futurist groove that Van Hoesen is synonymous with these days, this one is restrained in its ferocity and is a benchmark for what techno should sound like these days. On the flip is the broken beat industrialism that is "Unicorn" but it sounds more like a black stallion with red eyes galloping through the darklands. This one will mix in well with a Ugandan Methods record to reign in chaos and take audiences on a one way ticket to hell and back.

  7. Mick Chillage - "From Ripples"
Review: After years spent supporting the underground IDM scene digitally, Glasgow label Ambidextrous makes the leap to vinyl with this killer compilation of ear-catching deep techno and electronica. Christ brings a bubbling range of synth tones to "Rom" before Norken and Nyquist drop some brooding electro tones over rolling beats on"Od Detot". Solipsism has a more sassy house sound to impart, while Nyquist goes into full electro mode on his own. On the flip, Analogue Audio Association have some edgy acid to throw down, Cyan341 brings a touch of boogie flex to the record and Mich Chillage rounds the record off with emotive outboard electronics of a reflective nature.

  3. From Here (Paul Kendal mix) (5:06)
  4. From Here (Chasm mix) (7:46)
Review: Some 13 years after founding the fabulous Minimal Wave label, Veronica Vasicka has finally got round to releasing some music of her own. The fact that it's appearing on Regis and Female's long-serving Downwards imprint is a good indication of what's on offer: dark, stylish and mind-altering machine music full of raw, analogue electronics. Vasicka's original version of "From Here" draws great influence from vintage minimal wave, though its' heavy bass, industrial-strength IDM drums and rugged electronic pulses are bang up to date. Regis heads up the remix package, delivering a pulsating version that sits somewhere between new wave, electro and dark Italo-disco. Elsewhere, Paul Kendal's mix brilliantly blends dark ambient and fuzz-laden guitars, while the Chasm Mix is a bustling, delay-laden trip into intergalactic new wave territory.

  4. Todd Sines - "Trap" (4:32)
Review: Andy Vaz's Background Records is one of the hallmarks of creativity and inspiration that came out of the peak clicks n cuts era of minimal techno around the mid 00s. As such, it's great to see him revisit some of the most timeless material from the label via this carefully curated series of classics. His own "Still On Time" is actually a previously unreleased affair that bubbles with warmth and clarity, while Kit Clayton's "Buffalo" plies a unique line in off-centre, uptempo techno. Rhythm Maker (better known these days as Harmonious Thelonious) plumbs the depths of dubbed out minimalism on "Alles Mainstream", and the ever-swinging machine master Todd Sines brings the tightly clipped funk on "Trap".

  2. Zy Clone (Vectorvision re-vison) (5:59)
Review: Here's something to put lead in the pencil of any electro nuts out there: a high-profile collaboration between rising star Vectorvision (AKA Dallas producer Brian Bishop) and all-round legend Convextion (AKA Gerard Hanson). In its original form, ZY Clone is something of a beast, sitting somewhere between the heavy, angular, acid-laced Dutch electro sound and the melodious, synth-laden, deep space bliss of Hanson's usual Convextion fare. Bishop goes solo to provide the obligatory flipside remix, layering waves of glacial, cascading synthesizer lines and spacey chord progressions over an action-packed drum machine workout. Naturally, both sides are rich in bustling analogue drum machine hits and vintage synthesizer motifs.
