Cat: GV 008. Rel: 24 Jul 17
  1. Thefft & TOYC - "Atlantic" (5:51)
  2. BD1982 - "In '95" (5:04)
  3. Eighth Ruin - "Whip" (3:44)
  4. Etch - "Predator" (7:16)
Review: Green Village is a label operating out of Jersey City that deals in all manner of sounds from rugged house to scuffed up techno, but with a distinct bent towards broken rhythms and plenty of bass. This various artists 12" plies a diverse trade, with all tracks bound together by their ruffness. Theft & TOYC bring some loud and lurid bass synths to their snaking slice of oddball club music "Atlantic", while BD1982 places focus on dense layers of choppy drums and needlepoint acid arpeggios. Eighth Ruin delivers a truly head turning beat with the appropriately named "Whip", and then Etch pays tribute to a classic movie with the excellent breakbeat science of "Predator".

  1. Inertials (original mix) (5:15)
  2. Inertials (Inigo Vontier mix) (6:44)
  3. Inertials (Jamie Paton mix) (6:57)
Review: As well as manning his own label Duro, Theus Mago can be found slinging out heat on Turbo, Kill The DJ and more recently Ombra. The Mexican producer returns to home turf for his latest transmission, serving up one original track with two killer remixes. "Inertials" is a rowdy beast in its original form, tapping up a breakbeat roll, dirty wave synth stabs and plenty more sonic debris for a cut that spans a whole lot of styles and makes them gel together seamlessly. Inigo Vontier takes the original and makes it into a bone-rattling drum track to batter the crowd into submission very late on in the dance. Jamie Paton takes a different approach on the B-side, weaving a little tenderness into the mix with some elegant synth lines that offset the raw bite of the drums beautifully.

  5. Patrick's Last Trip (Vernon Felicity remix)
  6. Tungsten
Review: Continuing Bliq's quest to unearth the most spooky and otherworldly techno and deep house fodder out there, Thingamajicks step into the spotlight with a staggeringly confident first release that touches on a range of moods without even a hint of trepidation. "Priceless" is a slow, stark exercise in 4/4 melancholia focused on dramatic swells of chord rather than anything percussive. "Sub Rosa X" goes even further out into an immersive swarm of analogue electronics loping in a reluctant groove, the sounds swaying as though they are without an anchor, and then when you least expect it the title track takes a massive swerve towards lackadaisical guitar chords and breezy optimism.

  2. Pop Yard (6:02)
  3. Friend Unfriend (5:48)
Review: Mystery artist This Other Space first popped up on Tasteful Nudes earlier this year with malicious little house EP named Eye Of The Cosmic, and the enigmatic artist is back on the Argot sub-label with another blend of dreamy house music. "Eye Of The Cosmic" is all about the sci-fi low-end, a bass tone that would make the Chicago boys proud, while the flipside sees the stuttering drum rolls of "Pop Yard" mash up with an '80s kind of vibe, and the tribal wails of "Friend Unfriend", a house tune that contains something distinctly British about it. Check 'em!

Cat: THL 024LTD. Rel: 11 Jun 18
  1. Insanity Dub
  2. Rusty Flashback
  3. Garden Of Corrosion
  4. Pepper Jones
Review: Building on the momentum of the strong reissue programme undertaken at Thule Records HQ, Thor returns to the fray with some new productions that add a new chapter to the story of Icelandic techno. This limited run of Decay appropriately comes on marbled grey vinyl. Of course, the unique atmosphere the label carved out in the 90s has been left intact - the dubby processing and icy melodies abound throughout, creating utterly immersive techno and house variations in the process. "Insanity Dub" has a live feel to its drum set which injects a curious disco energy into the mix, while "Rusty Flashback" takes things in a subtle tech house direction. "Garden Of Corrosion" stands apart with its slender sound palette, placing the emphasis on groove and swing, while "Pepper Jones" ramps the dub techno exploration up to 11. If you love the sound of Thule, you're going to love this.

  1. Insanity Dub

  3. Garden Of Corrosion
  4. Pepper Jones
Review: "The wait is over as we finally have a new release ready by one of the originators of Icelandic techno. It's been a while, but worth the wait - as he delivers a straight-shooter, destined to find place in the record bags of all serious djs for years to come.
The EP consists of four dub-influenced techno tracks - each one exploring the depths of sonic and emotional landscapes. Some might even say glacial and atmospheric, yet perfect for a late night spin at the clubs.
Thule Records is considered by many to be a pioneers in the field of dub-influenced techno music and was a starting point for many of Iceland's most renowned electronic musicians.

  1. Chancer
  2. Blanx
  3. Chancer (Kowton remix)
Review: Having previously impressed with vivid blends of cosmic R&B, skewed space-pop, glistening post-ambient soundscapes and mangled, synth-laden grime, rising star Throwing Shade (AKA producer Nabihan Iqbal) demonstrates her dancefloor side with a killer 12" on Happy Skull. "Chancer" and "Blanx" both retain Iqbal's uniquely intergalactic aesthetic, whilst flitting between jacking, Chicago-influenced house rhythms and jazzy, off-kilter dancefloor grooves. Synths sparkle, while vocal snippets drift in and out of the mix. The 12" is completed by a riotous, predictably heavyweight remix from Kowton, whose guttural techno grooves are peppered with cut-up samples of Iqbal's distinctive, dreamy vocals.

Source (12" + MP3 download code)
Cat: FRAGILE 07. Rel: 09 May 18
  1. Source (Roman Flugel mix) (9:28)
  2. Source (15:54)
Review: Acclaimed photographer and visual artist Wolfgang Tillmans seems to be devoting more of his time to music making. Source marks his second EP of the year, following the February release of Heute Will Ich Frei Sein. In its original form (featured on the flipside), "Source" is an epic piece of next level electronic experimentalism, with Tillmans wrapping his own manipulated vocal howls, yelps and other non-verbal noises in fuzzy modular synths and end-of-days electronics. This 16-minute original version comes accompanied by a naturally more dancefloor-friendly revision by Roman Flugel, who places rolling, mind-altering drum machine hits and a rumbling bassline underneath Tillmans' eccentric original elements.

  4. On The Move (5:10)
Review: UK techno collectors have long raved about this EP, a 1992 collaboration between Ubik members Dave Campbell and Viv Beeton under the one-off Timenet alias. The record's genius lies in its futurist fusion of elements borrowed from Chicago acid, Detroit and Brooklyn techno and European rave records. While the use of heavy rave stabs on the mind-altering closer "On The Move" dates it (the stripped-down version on the A-side, with its Joey Beltram and Derrick May influences, has aged better), for the most part the Dishwasher EP feels genuinely timeless. Check, in particular, the UK take on Detroit futurism that is "DX Moods" and acid-fired lead cut "Dishwasher", which is one of the best tributes to Mr Fingers' "Washing Machine" you're ever likely to hear.

  3. Drifters Acid (4:49)
Review: Los Angeles-based Finn Johannes Auvinen is no stranger to balls-out acid revivalism. Under the Tin Man alias, he's released plenty of TB-303 powered house and nails techno in recent years. This three-track missive is full of meandering acid lines, too. A-side "Life is Acid" sets the tone, layering psychedelic TB-303 motifs and dreamy chords over a typically slipped drum machine rhythm. Flipside "Trip The Acid" puts the acid lines front and centre over a sparkling electro beat, before "Drifters Acid" sees Auvinen neck a bag of happy tablets, head for the sun and lay down some surprisingly melodious Balearic acid house.

  1. Second Stimulus (8:59)
  2. Synchro Surfer (6:15)
Review: Long-serving British producer Toby Tobias returns to ESP Institute for a second time. Intriguingly, A-side "Second Stimulus" - arguably one of his finest cuts to date - is a little more robust and bass-heavy that his usual offerings, with floatation tank motifs and cascading chords rising above a bold, chunky, sub-bass-rich groove. It's undeniably floor-friendly, but also deliciously spacey and quietly melodious. Turn to the flipside for "Synchro Surfer", where expertly dubbed-out synth refrains rise above a deep, purist tech-house groove. It's the sort of record we'd have expected to hear at a Wiggle party in the late '90s, which is no bad thing.
