Synthetic Gold 4 (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: SGR 004. Rel: 02 Oct 17

  7. Loop B (SVS28)
  8. Loop B (SVS17)
  9. Loop A (SVS15)
Review: Stephen Laubner never fails to deliver the goods, whether on his own label Something or elsewhere. Having recently popped up on The Untold Stories, this time around he's dropping his uniquely crusty compositions on Synthetic Gold. After a quietly disconcerting ambient opening, the leftfield grind of "The Taphead" pushes an uncompromising agenda of ragged bass and an unrelenting groove. "October Sunrise" by way of contrast is a more intimate, sweet natured affair. "Syntax Error" too taps into the softer side of Laubner's craft in a most mesmerizing of ways, but for the die hard fans fear not, there's also plenty of locked groove loops included to keep you tripping into infinity.

10 Years Of Jaunt: Land (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: JR 007.2. Rel: 11 Dec 17
  1. Stojche - "The Exchange"
  2. AWOL - "54.973379, -1.614705"
  3. Luke Hess - "TDY"
  4. Deep'a & Biri - "Pilgrim"
Review: The Jaunt Records 10 years series shores up with the Land installment featuring another four adventurous souls that have the spirit of deepest techno in their bones. Stojche lets lush Motor City synths lead the way on the energetic "The Exchange" before AWOL gets into an intricate broken beat groove on the stunning "54.973379, -1.614705". Luke Hess brings some unabashed acid gurgles to the front of the mix on "TDY" and then Deep'a & Biri plot a course for dubby waters with the growling tones of "Pilgrim".

Capture EP (red vinyl 12")
Cat: BLUG 002. Rel: 06 Dec 16
  1. M.R.E.U.X. - "Capture 0.1" (6:03)
  2. M.R.E.U.X. - "Obscene" (6:14)
  3. M.R.E.U.X. - "Black Area" (2:19)
  4. Steve Stoll - "Christ Complex" (5:43)
  5. Steve Stoll - "Christ Complex" (dub) (5:20)
Review: Blumoog Music likes to do things a little differently when it comes to house and techno. By that, we mean that the new label doesn't care much for passing trends or the next biggest hype and, rather than follow the masses, they've started their journey by recruiting one of techno's most underrated stars. Steve Stoll has been on the scene for around twenty-five years, first appearing on Richie Hawtin's early Probe label, before starting what turned out to be a stunning career in music. The man collaborates with the mysterious MREUX across these five mystical slices of minimalistic tech-funk, and there just isn't anything the we don't approve of here; the opener capture is a dark, dubbed-out bundle of electronics that resemble Plastikman's early work, while "Obscene" manages to create a stuttering techno groove out of sparse, limited elements that have been processed heavily, and "Black Area" removes all beats in favour of glitchy drones. The speed is turned up on the much more club-centric groove that is "Christ Complex", which is followed by a much more subtle and deeper dub version. TIP!

Object (12")
Cat: KOEPEL I. Rel: 18 Sep 17
  1. 001 (5:30)
  2. 002 (4:56)
  3. 003 (5:18)
Review: More lo-fi house to keep the kids dancing in the vein of Lobster Theremin and E-Beamz up for grabs here, courtesy of new imprint Koepel out of Belgium. On the Object EP are three 'evolving tracks, with a trace of melancholia and wayfaring, that unveil the artist's explorative nature'. We couldn't have said it better ourselves! The A side cut is an emotive journey that soons gets its groove on via those super compressed and thumping rhythms that break through all the smoky layers of tape saturation. On the flip, the second cut is a droning and tunnelling hypnotic techno number that could sure have crossover appeal and finally "003" goes for that classic acid house era vibe.

Excuses (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: VIVOD 019. Rel: 20 Nov 17
  1. Way Ahead
  2. Croatian Households
  3. Labud Loop
  4. K Stands For..
Review: Having crept out of the tape undergrowth and respected haunts like Clan Destine and Always Human to earn more civilized recognition on BANK Records NYC and Bliq, Strahinja Arbutina makes the move to Vivod for yet more of that edgy, leftfield techno business that keeps mothers awake at night from worry. The grit, noise and distortion has been faithfully carried through from the cassette-based roots of Arbutina's sound, but these tracks are more than ready to do the damage in the dance (where you're less likely to find a tape deck). Hold on tight as the likes of "Way Ahead" give the sound engineer a fright when they think the system has overloaded.

Fox Venom (140 gram vinyl 12")

  1. Fox Venom (7:00)
  2. Fox Venom (Deemonlover So Solid remix) (6:24)
  3. Teabagging Mystery (5:52)
  4. Drillin' (4:23)
Review: Having emerged from the murky waters of the tape scene on Always Human and Summer Isle, Strahinja Arbutina follows up on a first 12" for BANK Records NYC with this sterling sure shot for the excellent Bliq label. There's a range of styles displayed across Fox Venom, but the tracks are held together by the immersive, droning atmospheres that linger in the background of the productions. "Fox Venom" lurches under a heavy cloud like the best subterranean techno should, while "Teabagging Mystery" gets locked into a deathly minimal groove. This is music for the graveyard shift, although Deemonlover's "So Solid Mix" of "Fox Venom" does inject some wild breakbeat action into the gothic surroundings.

  1. Error Design # 1 (4:33)

  3. Error Design # 1 (NHK YX Koyxen remix) (4:50)
  4. Error Design # 1 (Cardopusher remix) (4:46)
Review: G-23 makes his debut under the Strange Audio Dreams moniker, coming through on Italy's young Art-Aud label with a sweltering two-tracker backed by two heavy remixes. "Error Design 1" is a break-driven jam that never truly drops into pool of nastiness, leaving you yearning more, while "Error Design 2" strips the beats in favour of glitchy field recordings and percussion-driven drones. Pan's NHK YX Koyxen remixes the former into a wonky bit of brain dynamite, pushing those breaks in and out his melodic waves, Cardopusher makes a deep techno roll out of the same original tune. All in all, a rather essential piece of gear.

He operates the Community Library and the currently dormant Archigramophone label too.The Future Shock EP features a wide selection of moods and grooves: from the ravey early '90s techno workout of the title track, the classic deep house vibe of the emotive "Forgotten Encounter" and the hypnotic outsider house of "Monsterzellos".

Review: After a series of sporadic, utterly windblown techno EPs over the last 4 years, Nadia Struiwigh lands on the constantly growing Central Processing Unit with a pair of mindbending dance sketches that blur the liens between industrial and something verging on techno. "Lenticular" and "Trip In Fiction" are made up of the same cloth; two hazy, broken down club deviants that power forwards with the help of grainy power electronics and hardware fuzz.

  3. Border (7:02)
Review:  Matthew Styles is by no means prolific - just 12 releases in 10 years - but still manages to bring a distinctive touch to each production. In this instance, Styles' first EP for Ostgut following an appearance on one of the Panorama Bar samplers, there's a rough and bleary feel to each composition. This sensibility manifests itself in different ways; the title track is a stepping, broken beat affair laced with acid, while the contemplative "Wave 6" sounds like it was created by the Mike Huckaby-loved synth. The only out and out dance floor track, "Border", is also notable thanks to its shimmering, sleek chords and rolling house beats.

Cat: VV 023. Rel: 05 Jun 17
  1. Always (8:08)
  2. Resist (4:15)
  3. Always (Tornhawked) (10:24)
Review: Steve Summers is commonly found lurking around labels such as L.I.E.S. and the affiliated Russian Torrent Versions, but here he's sliding his machines over to Torn Hawk's Valcrond Video label to throw down more of that sensual and sinewy beat-baiting business. "Always" is a stellar lead track that deals in immersive atmospheres and insistent rhythm - the consummate club workout for the deeper, darker end of the night. "Resist" turns up the heat with a raft of syncopated rhythms and gnarly synth textures that show Summers at his urgent best. Torn Hawk's version of "Always" fills the B side in a haze of blown out sonics and meditation for the drum machine generation.

  1. Spoken By The Spirits
  2. 4 This Is Your Salvation
Review: The Spirits Have Spoken sees Jamal Moss returns to the Sequencias label for more killer discordant, psychedelic transmissions as the Sun God! After years of dormancy, Moss returned to the Sun Ra riffing project in devastating style last year with the Being Hieroglyphic EP for Paul Du Lac's consistently interesting Bio Rhythm label, which featured three remastered tracks from the Music For Mathematics CDr series and sounded like Ron Hardy back in business after a deal with the devil. That's a good frame of mind to approach The Spirits Have Spoken; the trademark glistening synth lead of "Spoken By The Spirit" is Jamal Moss at his most hypnotic whilst "4 This Is Your Salvation" is as hellish as the producer's stunning Morphine Records release The Lost Transmission.

  1. Cosmic Chords One (8:59)
  2. Cosmic Chords Two (9:27)
Review: The Sun God aka Hieroglyphic Being aka Jamal Moss is a difficult guy to keep up with, that's for damn sure. Spreading his signature trademark of gritty, fuzzed out pseudo-techno across so many aliases and labels, it's as if the dude is making music 24/7. For his latest excursion Mr. Moss appears as The Sun God - a tribute name to his idol Sun Ra - for Copenhagen's always-on-the-money Cejero imprint. The A-side, "Cosmic Chords One", is classic Moss with its stumbling, alcoholic drum pattern and beautifully distorted chords - one of his finest moments and surely the winner from this year, so far. The B-side, "Cosmic Chords Two" continues Moss' devious sounds but takes them onto more distant plateaus, where the beats have now fallen into place and the synths have taken a less abstract form. Warmly recommended.

  3. Minimum Syndicat - "Mass Evacuation" (5:47)
  4. Minimum Syndicat - "Nosebleed" (5:57)
Review: For their latest 12", French techno/rave crew Minimum Syndicat has asked long-serving producer Sunil Sharpe to join the party. Predictably Sharpe delivers the goods, wrapping warped, mind-altering TB-303 lines around a bombastic, metallic techno groove on "The Tunnel Master", before surging into industrial electro/broken techno territory on the bleak and blackened "Rope To String". Minimum Syndicat themselves take control on side B, first serving up a chunk of distorted acid techno ("Mass Evactuation") before making merry with filthy rave stabs, restless "hoover" motifs, sweaty breakbeats and cut-up vocal samples on the fiendishly intense "Nosebleed". Not for the faint hearted, but undeniably exciting and floor-friendly.

The Golden Ravedays 10 (12" + MP3 download code)
Cat: TGR 010. Rel: 25 Oct 17
  1. Rock & Roll Baby (15:00)
  2. Shining (15:29)
Review: Aksel Schaufler has undertaken an ambitious effort this year with his Golden Ravedays concept, where over each month throughout 2017 he has released another respective edition. We are almost at the end - but as sad as it is, we do have the music to celebrate which is the main thing, right? Golden Ravedays 10 features another couple of long and epic cuts. The A side features the slo-mo rock 'n' roll swagger of "Rock 'N' Roll Baby" featuring Schaufler's creepy vocals over a hypnotic and at times esoteric sounding arrangement. On the flip, we have something entirely different in the form of "Shining" an early '90s IDM sounding journey which we must admit was our pick on this release - it reminds us of the glory days of Peacefrog and Planet E way back when: when electronic music had soul! Volume 10 does not at all disappoint and for those of you who've not been paying attention thus far: we'd highly recommend you catch up on previous editions: you won't regret it!
