Secret Elements EP (140 gram vinyl 12" repress)
Cat: PERP 001. Rel: 22 Oct 18
  1. Specter & Chicagodeep - "Sonar Pulse" (Linkwood edit)
  2. Chicagodeep - "Restless Nights"
  3. Taelue - "Social Anxiety"
  4. Taelue - "Rogue Access Point"
Review: REPRESS ALERT: The debut release from US label Perpetual Rhythms comes in the shape of an EP of collaborations and single drops entitled Secret Elements. Firecracker boss Linkwood provides some extra Chi-Town edge to the sombre melodies and science fiction synths of Specter & Chicagodeep's "Sonic Pulse" on his opening edit, whilst Chicagodeep's "Restless Nights" generates a mix of spacey, laid back vibes. The bleepy pulses of Taelue's "Social Anxiety" sounds close to what an Aphex Twin and Jerome Sydenham & Kerri Chandler house collaboration would result in, while the single rimshots and wallowing pads of "Rough Access Point" give the track a distinctly lonesome ambience.

  1. Goloko Dhama
  2. Sadhu
Review: Once a compelling production unit on the superb Thisisnotanexit label, it's been a while since we heard anything from the Spectral Empire duo of Kyle Martin & George Thompson. More recently the pair has been engaged in other projects, with Martin collaborating with Jonny Nash as Land Of Light and Thompson casting a cosmic spell on the Andy's Weatherall and Blake with his Black Merlin output. Back together as Spectral Empire for this 12" on Nu Earth Kitchen, Martin and Thompson's studio chemistry hasn't dissipated in the time apart on the basis of the two cuts here. Lead track "Goloko Dhama" uses it's nine minute duration wisely as Spectral Empire go deep into a brooding sci fi flecked disco groove. Face down "Sadhu" finds Martin and Thompson veer into almost techno territory driven by some brilliantly sputtery 808s.

  1. Pipe Bomb (1)
  2. Pipe Bomb (2)
Review: Sound Signature are at it again with their dark, driving and jackin' grooves. Every time Theo Parrish decides a tune is worth pressing up nice and loud on vinyl, it's wise to pay attention. And so it proves here, with Chicago native Spekter dropping one-sided 12" "Pipe Bomb", a deadly and pounding excursion into the murkier corners of house music. It's not one for the faint hearted either, as an overwhelming sense of moodiness pushes ever forward, dripping in twisted samples and heavy techno kicks.

  1. Real Talk (6:13)
  2. Real Talk (instrumental mix) (6:08)
  3. B_W (AmbACID version) (10:40)
Review: Saginaw brothers Ben and Zachary (aka Shigeto) only launched the Portage Garage Sounds imprint this year, and already they've come through with some absolute beasts! For this latest outing, Zachary Saginaw and Bill Spender come through as Spencer & Saginaw, putting Michigan firmly back on the electronic map with the headstrong "Real Talk", a tune which perhaps doesn't bang as hard as others, but that certainly has all the grove and charisma of the some of the finest Omar S tunes. There's also an instrumental cut, and the hollow landscapes of the AmbACID version of "B_W".

Review: Oscar Mulero and Christian Wunsch's Spherical Coordinates collaboration may have a home away from home in Belgian techno titans Token, but their HQ will always be Pole Group. After two 12"s on Token, Mulero and Wunsch return to Spain for their fifth Spherical Coordinates record together and another masterclass in burrowing club constructions. Those techno selectors whose every weekend is spent in the booths testing the soundsystems and dancefloors of basements and warehouses will naturally gravitate towards these four cuts, where relentless drums and deep, ever evolving atmospheres rule at large.

  1. Redeem (Soulphiction Reconstruction) (7:48)
  2. Stabilize (Leonel Castillo Reconstruction) (7:31)
  3. Stabilize (Mark & Matt Thibideau Reconstruction) (7:21)
Review: The 'Reconstructed' series has featured reworks by legends such as Steve O'Sullivan, Thomas Melchior and Cobblestone Jazz, whose take on tracks from Paul St. Hilaire and Rhauder's debut LP Derdeoc was originally released in 2017. On the third and final edition in the series, the Berlin based duo's work gets remixed first by the Philpot affiliated Soulphiction who gives "Redeem" a truly fervent re-rub - this is utter dancefloor drama in the vein of Carl Craig. Argentinian veteran Leonel Castillo gets a slinky, bass-heavy groove on with his dub-laden rendition of "Stabilize" while the equally revered Thibideau brothers work their magic as always on their glacial re-rub of the track: where the Canadian twins take it into cavernous territory. They truly conjure those ghosts in the machines on this killer remix.

Redlamp 10a (hand-stamp 12")
Cat: RK 8. Rel: 24 Jul 13
  1. Redlamp 10A
  2. Slow
  3. C Rol
Review: Ruf Kutz' eighth release comes from Stalker, originally a trance producer from Denmark that's now delving into a dubby realm of techno production. Opening the three track EP are the heavily effected and tearing chords of "Redlamp 10A", which relentlessly strafe the track arrangement, while "Slow" sees Stalker settle the pace of the A-side, replacing harsher saw waves with softer, effervescent pads. Festive tambourines and a firm four-four kick create the backbone of "C Rol", which then allows an endless bobble of dubby stabs and short burst chords to move freely throughout the piece.

  4. Cruising The Rubber (4:01)
Review: Stallone The Reducer is becoming rowdier by the release and, in so doing, is also opening the doors of electro to a whole new audience of avid 12" junkies. Out through his own Est.83 imprint, always a wild and raucous platform of sounds, the Reducer touches down with four menacing slices of neuro-funk, starting with the harsh snares and deathly distortions of "Always Late", followed by the more sinister, prowling tones of "Typical Weekly Funk". "Always Hate" rolls and unwinds its muscly groove with pure evil at its core, and "Cruising The Rubber" gives a nod to electro's industrial connection - sounding strangely similar to some classic Throbbing Gristle pieces! Heavy gear...

  1. Ka One & St-Sene - "Aseed 2"
  2. Ortella - "Dope Noise"
  3. Steaward - "Track 1"
  4. Steaward - "Track 2"
Review: Here, one-time Local Talk and Qualmoto Records regular DJ Steaw dons his Steaward alias for a second selection of acid-flecked deep house and Detroit techno jams. This time, he's joined by a couple of other producers, who contribute impressive cuts to the A-side. There's a fluid feel to the twittering synths and late night atmospherics of Ortella's "Dope Noise", which belies the track's pumping techno rhythms. Ka-One 7 St-Sene's "Aceed Two" is similarly enjoyable, with rough 303 lines riding pounding drums and hazy chords. Steaw takes a more straightforward deep house route on his two contributions, with the sweaty and decidedly fuzzy "Track 2" outgunning the more cultured "Track 1" in the "best track" stakes.

  3. Green Therapy (5:56)
  4. Green Therapy (Luis remix) (4:57)
Review: The ninth edition of Wake Up! catches modular magician Steevio in an introverted mood. Over three tracks, the Freerotation co-founder showcases a different side to his music persona on these hypnotic and graceful excursions through the deeper side of the techno and house. First up we have got "Machlud" which sets the mood of the EP perfectly; sorrowful and barely-there, before moving to the more nervous lounging of "Forgotten Futures." On the flip, "Green Therapy" is more intense, bouncing with 'a lightly kinetic swing'. Luis' remix wrings some raw pathos from the original's immaculate depths. Yet it remains of a piece with the source material, rounding out an EP of heady and ephemeral moments.

  3. Robert Hood - "Gun Talk" (Ben Sims JFF edit) (5:28)
  4. ROD - "Embase" (5:35)
Review: Ben Sims' Machine mix is loaded with exclusive gems which get a full-fat airing on this series of samplers. After a strong first round, another four crucial cuts from the heavyweight end of Sims' contact list get packed onto one highly desirable 12". First up is Berlin mainstay Steffi, who threads a hypnotic array of rhythmic elements together into the deep but energising "Gentle Uplift". Jeroen Search then edges the record a little further into the depths with the loopy, sonar bleep immersion of "Ostinato Pattern." Robert Hood's snarling, muscular "Gun Talk" gets the edit treatment from Sims himself, and then the record rounds off with the pumping stabs and irrepressible funk of ROD's "Embase".

Review: Absent from the record shelves since her fine 2013 album Joy One Mile, Christelle Gualdi returns triumphantly with a four track 12" of jacking new Stellar Om Source material in the shape of Nite-Glo. Again issued through New York label RVNG, the record hones in on a focussed exploration of the luminescent power of the Roland 303 and is undoubtedly the French artist's most dancefloor-concentrated body of work to date. The label suggest Gualdi was moved to produce this music as a means to deal with loss, and the four tracks suggest she has channelled this sense of grief in the most positive manner.
