Review: Last year's Steffi album, Power of Anonymity, the subject of attention on this latest Ostgut Ton 12" as the Berlin label seek out two distinct acts to rework one of the long player's highlights. Named after a street Steffi Doms used to live on, "JBW25" is included here in original form for anyone that missed the aforementioned album and also offers first hand comparison to the remixes from Further Reductions and Answer Code Request. It's nice to see Brooklyn-based duo Katie Rose and Shawn O'Sullivan turn in their debut remix with a creeping, stripped down take on the track that bristles with the same sense of foreboding as their Cititrax LP of last year. Answer Code Request offers two versions which will appeal to the straighter techno heads out there.

Osirion (12")

  1. Osirion (9:09)
  2. Primus (8:24)
Review: Given his reputation for pioneering techno in the Netherlands in the '90s, it is no surprise a broad range of labels are looking to work with Steve Rachmad. Not soon after the man known as Sterac contributed a pair of remixes to an Aera 12" on the mighty Innervisions, Rachmad's earlier material is the subject of a reissue 12" on home turf titans Rush Hour. It's his mid-'90s work for Dutch techno label 100% Pure that is the focus of the Amsterdam operation's attentions here, specifically the cuts "Osirion" and "Primus." Issued together on a '96 12" on 100% Pure, both these tracks are not as widely feted as Sterac classics from the same era like "Sitting On Clouds" but they do demonstrate Rachmad's innate mastery of the Motor City sound. Remastered for 2016, they sound just as fresh some 20 years on!!

  4. Motion 4 (6:32)
Review: Japanese deep house producer Stereociti returns for more soulful excursions through the deep, courtesy of the newly inaugurated Waveguide imprint. Real name Ken Sumitani, the Berlin based producer was first discovered by the legend Mike Huckaby around a decade ago and has since become a staple of the Mojuba imprint: which has presented several of his EPs -not to mention two albums including last year's excellent 'Lost Land'. Sumitani serves up some immersive and atmospheric dub techno on the A side, the first being a tough and dancefloor ready affair, while "Motion 2" gets more subterranean and hypnotic - we particularly enjoyed the glacial and cavernous qualities of this highlight. On the flip, feel the evocative and melodic power of "Motion 3" until the final offering brings the power with this Luke Hess sounding groove that features some truly sublime dub chord action.

Review: Haunting and driving techno delight with a house touch for late night movement, from Paul Mac and Jonny Seymour aka STEREOGAMOUS. Two masters of saunatechno, two icons of Australian music, two friends that make magic together on the reg. Remixers of LCD Soundsystem, Kylie Minogue and The Presets. Paul is an ARIA Award winning legend, from his ITCH-E & SCRATCH-E project to his work with Silverchair and beyond. Jonny aka Seymour Butz is half of homodisco ravesupreme KOOKY, a renowned hug enthusiast and one of Australia's most revered soundtrack curators. Together they are a supreme duo whose musical taste is beyond redoubt. Deejays par excellence, musicians who push the boundaries, this EP is the sound of a summer in love in Berlin and thought over in a Sydney winter. Pressed exclusively on 100 180g vinyl records only. This will never be re-pressed. Listen.

  1. Stimming - "Frankfurt Main" (7:30)
  2. Dave DK - "Saida 222" (6:18)
Review: It's been a good 18 months since we last heard from Pampa offshoot Hart & Tief. Like its' predecessors, the label's third 12" is a double A-side affair showcasing the work of two experienced producers. Stimming handles side A, serving up a rich slice of hypnotic but driving tech-house built around rolling beats, trippy effects and restless riffs. Over on the reverse, Dave DK opts for a more stripped-back, bass-heavy feel on "Saida 222", where nagging, metallic stabs and fluttering chords loop above a dark and foreboding rhythm track. Both tracks sound like tried-and-tested late night workouts, though it's Dave DK's contribution that's our pick of the pair.

  1. Something Is Raw
  2. What Is Back
  3. What Is Back (Constructed By Gari Romalis)
Review: After releases from the likes of Myles Serge and Hakim Murphy, Mentha now turns to STK (also known as Stekke) for some sinister minimalist tackle from the dark side. "Something Is Raw" creeps along on a bed of grumbling drone as pin-prick percussion punctuates the gloom, and then "What Is Back" drops the bed of noise for an eerily sparse groover sure to unsettle the nerves of any listener. After all those subtleties, Gary Romalis does a damn fine job of edging a little more meat onto the bones of "What Is Back" without losing the vibe of the EP. With punchy yet muted drums and lashings of atmosphere, his remix makes the perfect counterpoint to STK's uneasy reductions.

Review: Stephan Laubner is a productive sort. It's not long since he delivered the impressive At Disconnected Moments full-length for Smallville - or, for that matter, a pair of impressive 12" singles for Lick My Deck and Echochord - but he continues to churn out the hits. This expansive EP for his own Something imprint touches on many of his usual themes, casually flitting between spooky ambience ("LSS Recording"), hazy dub techno ("Intergalactic Quannum Web"), and curiously imaginative, off-kilter deep house (the woozy chug, humid melodies and dub techno textures of stand-out "Monkey Island"). He's also included an impressive trio of loops for DJs to play with, which veer from manic ghetto-glitch ("Loop 1"), to Casio-ware techno ("Loop 3"), via blazed hip-hop ("Loop 2").

Review: German house enigma, STL, usually sticks to his own Something imprint when venturing out of his studio. In fact, he's only really collaborated with relatively high profile labels like Perlon and Smallville Records in the past, so seeing him launch the new Boogie Box imprint is quite the treat. He's in an eerie, pensive mood for the opening "Hide & Seek", blasting out his signature percussive roll, while "Haze & Kraze" places a heavier stomp onto the groove, and delivers a classic, hazed-out STL bomb for the darker, deeper ends of the set...

  3. The Mountain Dub (Cleymoore reconstruction) (14:41)
Review: Always a prolific force operating on his own terms, Stephen Laubner makes his first appearance of 2017 with a release on the ever-growing Untold Stories label. Renbual Nahpets finds Laubner in a dubby frame of mind, especially on lead track "Sunny Park Chill" which sports some of his trademark grainy techno chords lingering in space surrounded by field recordings and subtle ripples of rhythm. "The Mountain Dub" meanwhile whips up a taut, rugged house groove with shimmering delays on the synth tones that only STL could be responsible for. Cleymoore uses the B side to lay out a remix of the latter track, turning it into a long and winding minimal track thick with detail.

Review: Stephen Laubner never fails to deliver the goods, whether on his own label Something or elsewhere. Having recently popped up on The Untold Stories, this time around he's dropping his uniquely crusty compositions on Synthetic Gold. After a quietly disconcerting ambient opening, the leftfield grind of "The Taphead" pushes an uncompromising agenda of ragged bass and an unrelenting groove. "October Sunrise" by way of contrast is a more intimate, sweet natured affair. "Syntax Error" too taps into the softer side of Laubner's craft in a most mesmerizing of ways, but for the die hard fans fear not, there's also plenty of locked groove loops included to keep you tripping into infinity.

  1. No More Words (13:41)
  2. Smooth Selector (10:09)
  3. Out Of The One (4:05)
Review: The elusive Stephan Laubner returns with a new EP for Dark Matters. Laubner has enjoyed an accomplished career thus far, with releases on labels including Perlon, Smallville and Echospace to name but a few. The Nonzero Sonics EP is the sixth release to date for Amirali's label and 'explores dark and twisted sentiments in avant-garde structures, consistently executed with impeccable detail.' "No More Words" is classic STL: dark, dusty and cavernous dub techno that is as hypnotic as it is absolutely evocative. On the flip, Laubner is as hard to pin down to one sound as always - but magnificent at it all the same with these two downbeat offerings. The jagged deep house of "Smooth Selector" with its complex broken beat arrangement carrying a texturised and atmospheric arrangement, while the dark and blunted hip-hop of "Out Of The One" is street sound for goths.

Review: Blundar is a label shrouded in mystery, although it seems aligned with artists like Lowtec and those orbiting crews like Smallville. The latest transmission on the dusty house imprint comes from STL, whose disheveled sounds is a natural fit for what has come before on Blundar. "Track 1" peers through a thick haze of smoke, exhaling pads and drones and keeping the bass pulsing throughout. The rest of the EP is given over to experimental and ambient tones, with the second track on Side B being an especially arresting piece loaded with melancholic contemplation. It's another strong addition to the Blundar repertoire, and another example of STL's skills and adaptability in the studio.

  4. Compassion (6:05)
Review: Over the last decade, Stojche Cvetanovski has appeared for many top labels, such as liebe*detail, Dogmatik and Subwax BCN. Here he makes his debut on Don Williams' esteemed Berlin imprint a.r.t.less, with some soulful techno excursions on the Magnitude EP. From the steely and austere energy of the title track - a dubby excursion from the factory floor which is perfect for those heads down moments, to additional A side cut "Matrix" - a deep and almost beatless number which displays even more emotive qualities. Featuring layers of life affirming strings/pads working their subtle magic - pretty awesome stuff. On the flip, Cvetanovski certainly proves that there is real diversity in his repertoire, on the sombre electro bass of "Compassion" which closes out this fine EP. Tip!

Review: The Jaunt Records 10 years series shores up with the Land installment featuring another four adventurous souls that have the spirit of deepest techno in their bones. Stojche lets lush Motor City synths lead the way on the energetic "The Exchange" before AWOL gets into an intricate broken beat groove on the stunning "54.973379, -1.614705". 5. Steve Stoll - "Christ Complex" (dub) (5:20)
Review: Blumoog Music likes to do things a little differently when it comes to house and techno. By that, we mean that the new label doesn't care much for passing trends or the next biggest hype and, rather than follow the masses, they've started their journey by recruiting one of techno's most underrated stars. Steve Stoll has been on the scene for around twenty-five years, first appearing on Richie Hawtin's early Probe label, before starting what turned out to be a stunning career in music. The man collaborates with the mysterious MREUX across these five mystical slices of minimalistic tech-funk, and there just isn't anything the we don't approve of here; the opener capture is a dark, dubbed-out bundle of electronics that resemble Plastikman's early work, while "Obscene" manages to create a stuttering techno groove out of sparse, limited elements that have been processed heavily, and "Black Area" removes all beats in favour of glitchy drones. The speed is turned up on the much more club-centric groove that is "Christ Complex", which is followed by a much more subtle and deeper dub version. TIP!

Review: Predictably, DVS1 has grabbed tracks from some serious techno talents for this third volume in Mistress's Special Release series. As a result, the vibe is loopy, pumping and energy-packed throughout, with standouts coming from Adriana Lopez (whose "Last Path" sounds like Surgeon making creepy EBM) and UK veteran Steve Bicknell, who brilliantly ladens a stomping beat with creepy electronics and all manner of psychedelic bleeps ("Space 13"). Elsewhere, Mike Storm brilliantly builds dancefloor intensity via relentless drum machine handclaps on "From The Human Eye To Earth", while Dustin Zahn delivers a decidedly distorted fusion of lo-fi techno and spacey Detroit futurism.

On the Object EP are three 'evolving tracks, with a trace of melancholia and wayfaring, that unveil the artist's explorative nature'. We couldn't have said it better ourselves! The A side cut is an emotive journey that soons gets its groove on via those super compressed and thumping rhythms that break through all the smoky layers of tape saturation. On the flip, the second cut is a droning and tunnelling hypnotic techno number that could sure have crossover appeal and finally "003" goes for that classic acid house era vibe.

Review: Having crept out of the tape undergrowth and respected haunts like Clan Destine and Always Human to earn more civilized recognition on BANK Records NYC and Bliq, Strahinja Arbutina makes the move to Vivod for yet more of that edgy, leftfield techno business that keeps mothers awake at night from worry. The grit, noise and distortion has been faithfully carried through from the cassette-based roots of Arbutina's sound, but these tracks are more than ready to do the damage in the dance (where you're less likely to find a tape deck). Hold on tight as the likes of "Way Ahead" give the sound engineer a fright when they think the system has overloaded.

Review: Having emerged from the murky waters of the tape scene on Always Human and Summer Isle, Strahinja Arbutina follows up on a first 12" for BANK Records NYC with this sterling sure shot for the excellent Bliq label. There's a range of styles displayed across Fox Venom, but the tracks are held together by the immersive, droning atmospheres that linger in the background of the productions. "Fox Venom" lurches under a heavy cloud like the best subterranean techno should, while "Teabagging Mystery" gets locked into a deathly minimal groove. This is music for the graveyard shift, although Deemonlover's "So Solid Mix" of "Fox Venom" does inject some wild breakbeat action into the gothic surroundings.

  4. Error Design # 1 (Cardopusher remix) (4:46)
Review: G-23 makes his debut under the Strange Audio Dreams moniker, coming through on Italy's young Art-Aud label with a sweltering two-tracker backed by two heavy remixes. "Error Design 1" is a break-driven jam that never truly drops into pool of nastiness, leaving you yearning more, while "Error Design 2" strips the beats in favour of glitchy field recordings and percussion-driven drones. Pan's NHK YX Koyxen remixes the former into a wonky bit of brain dynamite, pushing those breaks in and out his melodic waves, Cardopusher makes a deep techno roll out of the same original tune. All in all, a rather essential piece of gear.
