Cat: MOJUBA 007. Rel: 30 Aug 07
  1. Track 1
  2. Track 2
Review: Nick Sole is back on Mojuba! If you ever asked yourself how deep-house should sound like, now you have the chance to experience. The a-side of "World Dubbing" is an epic ocean of the deepest house sounds that will blow you away with its hypnotic organic feel and harmony. The b-side is a dancefloor shaking drum track with a catchy dubby atmosphere. Get it while you can!

Hypnagogo (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ARV 002. Rel: 26 Feb 18
  1. Error Hash Mirror Mountain
  2. Sea Dweller
  3. Hypnagogo
  4. Fast Rubber Taxis
Review: Following the excellent OHM compilation, Glasgow's Ambidextrous label continues its forays into vinyl editions with this sterling EP from label regular Solipsism, aka Craig Murphy. With an energised, dynamic sound that positively bursts out of the speakers, Murphy is flying the flag for leftfield electronica coming out of Scotland. "Error Hash Mirror Mountain" has the kind of overloaded yet melodic sound that you might expect from early Nathan Fake, although the wooziness is replaced by a rabid punch that shakes your cerebellum. "Sea Dweller" by way of stark contrast dives into a low-slung trip hop vibe, and the smoked out mood continues with "Hypnagogo" on the flip. "Fast Rubber Taxis" is equally slow, but it sports a sassy rhythmic strut that sets it apart from the other two downtempo tracks.

  7. Locked Groove 4 (0:29)
Review: We're absolutely riveted to see that Midland's Graded imprint is back on track, and doing what it does best. The man himself released an EP on his label not too long ago, but this new single by newcomer Solitary Dancer is the first by an outside artist. Of course, it's very much in line with the sort of broken, skeletal techno of the label head, and "Desire & Apathy" is an awesome piece of jagged drumming, while the following "Locked Groove" parts 1 and 2 offer some evil drum tooling. The lead track "Paradise Found" is close in texture to that late '90s IDM-techno that we love, with a gorgeous Rapture version to send things into balearic mode. Don't miss those two extra locked grooves at the tail-end too, they're both banging!

  4. Loop 1 (0:30)
Review: Montreal's shadowy Solitary Dancer returns serving up more noir tained and retro infused electronics in a bold fashion. Following up that fabulous Dualism EP for Dark Entries which featured homegirl Marie Davidson, he's back on Midland's Graded with his second release for the imprint entitled Transmitting To Heaven. After the deep and sinister acid electro of the title track, the deep and bleepy retro techno of "Birth Of Saturn" finishes the A side in style on this homage to the early '90s UK techno sound. On the flip, the nearly 10 minute ambient house journey "At The End Of The Corridor Of Love, A Loss" is just as mysterious as the producer himself.

  4. Sky Ride (5:46)
Review: Following up a great inaugural release by Portland's AC$, mysterious new imprint Open Channel for Dreamers (or simply O.C.D.) presents Montreal based Adam Solomon with four retro flavoured techno cuts, which take their cues from early sounds of Sheffield and Detroit. Starting off with the funky minimal techno-soul of "B 50" reminiscent of Titonton Duvante and the deep space transmission of "40.000 Light Years Away". On the flip, "Track For J" shares the same penchant for retro techno in the vein of recent releases on Berlin imprints Libertine and Slow Life, but the best was certainly saved for last on the hypnotic journey of "Sky Ride" with its evocative bounce that's led by those sweet arpeggiated pads.

  1. Elephant Generators (Chris Carter remix)
  2. Burn The Tables (Orphx remix)
  3. Quantimations (Bronze Teeth remix)
  4. King Vincent (Martial Canterel remix)
Review: Toronto label Suction return to New Ways, the latest LP from co-founder Jason "Solvent" Amm which was released earlier this year with an EP of remixes from some high grade artists. In original form New Ways was the soundtrack to I Dream Of Wires, the excellent documentary on modular synthesis, and was one of those rare LPs that's equally suited for the dancefloor and home listening. Here the likes of Chris Carter, Orphx, Bronze Teeth and Martial Canterel are let loose on the LP and there's a clear arc in intensity over the four remixes. As you'd expect "Burn The Tables" (Orphx remix) is totally suited to peak time techno deployment where as the three other revisions that sit either side take Solvent into more contemplative and abstract territory - the Bronze Tooth take being our favourite.

Review: White Edition: If you've seen the Modular synth documentary I Dream of Wires, you'll have been suitably impressed with the soundtrack provided courtesy of Suction Records boss Solvent. Whilst there was a double LP edition of the soundtrack, it didn't feature all the music Solvent had recorded for the documentary. That has now been remedied as Suction lay out this limited addendum 12" (available in three different colours of vinyl) consisting of previously digital only cuts and some fresh remixes. The DJs out there will be happy to see techno cut "Hadron" make the 12" upgrade, whilst the remix of "King Vincent" from Wrangler (featuring Cabaret Voltaire founder Stephen Mallinder) is equally floor-focused. Do check the other remix, of "Sender", which sees Todd Sines adopting his Interval alias for some unsettling modular sonics!!

  1. Track 1 (8:54)
  2. Track 2 (10:34)
Review: This marks the first release on vinyl from Greek label Helikon who present industrial duo Sone Urbia. On the Theros EP, there are two improvised live recordings on offer from between 2012 and 2013. On the A side is a powerful and abrasive body basher, featuring thunderous drums that reach near tribal moments and chilling wall of noise style drones atop. On the flip, the second offering is a much more atmospheric affair, with treated, textured layers of noise creating a haunting collage. Featuring haunting choir sounds, orchestral samples, field recordings and feedback all walking in perfect hysteria. An impressive debut from this underground label and one to watch in 2017 for sure!

  1. Subsonica

  3. Chatka
Review: Dutch producer Sota is the latest to be snapped up by Ornate Music, presenting his second ever release having first come to light with his own Talaman label earlier in the year. "Subsonica" rides on a tough house groove, keeping the elements as spartan as possible while heading straight into the deep end of the night. "Inverse" is a skippier affair that deals with heavily processed synth flares and a deadly swinging groove, and then "Chatka" finishes the EP off with a dreamy cut peppered with delay processing for the quintessential dubby trip through refined 4/4 dance music.

Review: Having previously surfaced on the Filtered compilation for Bleep, John Flynn's Spaces project returns with more intricate and playful electronica for the Warp subsidiary that more solidly establishes him as an artist of note for anyone who enjoys a good glitch-out. "Apologies" works rapid fire fragments and occasional sweeps of big bass into a tricksy time signature arrangement, while "Outside In" takes a slightly more measured approach to crafty electro. "Lever" too works catchy elements into a slick and addictive funk, with plenty of interference to keep things out in leftfield, before "In Wait" rounds things off with a more twitchy affair bolstered by looping piano fragments and interesting atmospheric disturbances.

Review: Under the now familiar Spacetravel alias, Luca Cara has released some fine music over the last couple of years, most notably a fine debut album for Perlon. Here he pops up on Japan's Cabaret imprint with a four-track EP that largely looks to Detroit for inspiration. The sci-fi inspired futurism of the Motor City can be clearly heard in the darting synth lines, fizzing cymbal programming and undulating bass of opener "Axion", before "Change Planet Stacion" adds a little acid-fuelled Chicago jack to the late '80s Transmat template. "Spirit" is darker and creepier in tone, while "Ankor What" successfully fixes vintage techno percussion and synths to a rich, deep house style bassline and chords.

Review: By now, we should all be familiar with the work of former Soma employee Dave "Sparky" Clark, who has spent the last few years delivering a swathe of quality EPs on Numbers and Rubadub. Here, he appears on old pal JD Twitch's Optimo Trax imprint for the first time. He begins with the looped-up techno-funk synth riffs and soft-touch electronics of "Things Fall Apart", before indulging his new wave, synth-pop and Italo-disco influences on "My Prophet". "Seven Daggers" drags piano house into deep space in the company of a wired George Clinton and Daft Punk (metaphorically speaking, rather than literally), while "Black Swan" is a spiraling, spacey chunk of proto-techno designed to inspire hands-in-the-air moments down at the Sub Club.

  2. Curtain Twitcher (Nina Kraviz Samba version) (5:00)
  3. Looking Glass (5:44)
  4. Tiresias (Anastasia Kristensen rework) (7:32)
Review: Unsurprisingly, Paul Woolford's Special Request project has become a reference point for London's Houndstooth imprint, the label ran and operated by Fabric, and he's back once more to drop the freshest techno sounds around. What makes this 12" even more special is a two-part appearance from Nina Kraviz, who remixes "Curtain Twitcher" twice, the first being a moody, hubby techno experiment and the second a more light-hearted 'Samba version' that carries the same sort of future-minimalism that says so much with so little. On the flip, "Looking Glass" is a heavy-handed, bad-mannered jungle experiment that lays down an insanely heavy groove of banging breaks sparse bleeps; Anastasia Kristensen's rework of "Tiresias" thrashes out a punitive techno bullet that, once again, is made for a contemporary techno floor.

Review: Sound Signature are at it again with their dark, driving and jackin' grooves. Every time Theo Parrish decides a tune is worth pressing up nice and loud on vinyl, it's wise to pay attention. And so it proves here, with Chicago native Spekter dropping one-sided 12" "Pipe Bomb", a deadly and pounding excursion into the murkier corners of house music. It's not one for the faint hearted either, as an overwhelming sense of moodiness pushes ever forward, dripping in twisted samples and heavy techno kicks.

Review: Saginaw brothers Ben and Zachary (aka Shigeto) only launched the Portage Garage Sounds imprint this year, and already they've come through with some absolute beasts! For this latest outing, Zachary Saginaw and Bill Spender come through as Spencer & Saginaw, putting Michigan firmly back on the electronic map with the headstrong "Real Talk", a tune which perhaps doesn't bang as hard as others, but that certainly has all the grove and charisma of the some of the finest Omar S tunes. There's also an instrumental cut, and the hollow landscapes of the AmbACID version of "B_W".
