Version 004.2 (limited 180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: FAM 004 2. Rel: 23 Mar 17
  1. Die Weisse Rose (Tale Of Us & Mind Against version) (6:17)
  2. Gesang Der Toten Dinge (Konstantin Sibold version) (7:46)
  3. Augen Der Nacht (Ryan James Ford version) (6:27)
  4. Die Macht Des Schicksals (Inland version) (7:16)
Review: From Another Mind, founded in 2014, presents its fourth and most capacious release to date. Having started off initially as a South-German Party series, this release sees commanders-in-chief SHDW & Obscure Shape invite back previous guests from the clubnight, just this time using their talents as remixers to breathe new life into the first three much praised From Another Mind records. The likes of Rodhad, Tale Of Us & Mind Against, Dax J, Konstantin Sibold and Shlomo all feature with contributions staying true to the Label's sound forged initially by its founders, and whether going down an epic or a more banging path, all versions pay respect to that special hypnotism which has found so many supporters. Veteran Producer James Ruskin masterfully condenses "Nachtblende" down to a loop while Ryan James Ford brings a touch of IDM-ish Bleep Techno to "Augen Der Nacht". Ed Davenport explores his Inland project further, contributing a stepping techno journey which is only matched by Rodhad's version in its sheer vastness. The release is split in two version EPs, namely FAM004.1 & FAM004.2. Both artworks function by themselves however its full glory shines when held next to each other as the paintings complement each other.

The Dirt (12")
Cat: 50WEAPONS 030. Rel: 27 Sep 13
  1. The Dirt
  2. Fluid 67
Review: This two-track single marks Rene Pawlowitz's return to 50 Weapons following the release of his divisive album The Killer last year, which saw him stepping outside of his usual home of Ostgut Ton for Modeselektor's club-focused imprint. Straddling the line between techno, bass and ambient, it was the kind of album that saw Pawlowitz largely leave behind the clubbier focus of his Head High, Wax, EQD or WK7 aliases to the frustration of some. This release however sees two more distinctly ravier tracks: "The Dirt" which combines turbulent synth textures and threadbare but propulsive rhythms, and the hardcore-influenced "Fluid 67", which packs enough '90s tinged euphoria into its 5 minutes to silence the naysayers.

  1. Dark Planet (4:33)
  2. Dark Planet (Modeselektor remix) (4:59)
Review: Modeselektor are clearly keen to make 50 Weapons' last few releases as strong as possible. For this 12", they've turned to Berlin techno titan Shed, who - somewhat predictably - more than delivers the goods. "Dark Planet" is a thick, tough and driving beast, with chopped-up, manipulated vocal snippets forming a quirky melody line above a thumping rhythm that neatly combines pounding kick-drums and hissing cymbals. This is no-nonsense, floor-friendly techno that comes laden with sly funk. Modeselektor themselves have a go at remixing it on the flip, delivering a far weirder, wilder, stranger and - bizarrely - more melodious 'broken techno' interpretation.

  1. Break Up III Tk4 (5:06)
  2. Final Distortion (3:36)
  3. Up The Hills (3:53)
  4. Crystal Cubes (3:37)
Review: Over the last few years, Rene Pawlowitz has spent much of the time establishing a range of alternate aliases - Head High and WK7 amongst them - leaving little team for new Shed material. Constant Power is his first outing under the guise since 2013, and is every bit as essential as his previous material. There's a general '90s feel throughout, from the sharp-cornered dancefloor IDM business of "Final Distortion", to the Future Times-ish new age motifs and stuttering breaks of "Up The Hills" and Surgeon style assault of "Crystal Cubes". Best of all, though, is "Break Up II Tk4", an industrial strength fusion of thumping techno and hardcore-era breakbeat madness.

Review: It's harder to place Shed's positioning these days, with the German producer fluctuating between different sub-labels and sub-moniker, But, that's just one of the reasons why we love him so much. He returns to our charts after the last EQUALIZED 12" with his The Final Experiment label and an EP by the name of No Repress But Warehouse Find, forever referencing the Hardwax philosophy. Here, you have 6 heavy techno drillers, all in his dubby, washed-out style that we have and always will look at as a continuation of the Basic Channel dynasty. In all honesty, you'll be stuck in finding any better contemporary techno. BIG, BIG TIP!

  3. Shores Of The Western Sea (3:54)
  4. Wisdom Of The Stars (10:47)
Review: Hailing from the dark and mysterious world of Bunker Records, Shemale makes a welcome return after many years of silence with this fantastic release on Tabernacle. "Star Chamber Summoning" sets a powerful tone - this is ambient music that demands attention through its sheer force of presence. "Way To Hyperborea" actually taps up some kind of beat structure, but it still behaves like a wayward backroom track with its undulating bassline and gravelly, brutally submerged beat. "Shores Of The Western Sea" is all analogue soundtrack bombast of the finest B-movie kind, and "Wisdom Of The Stars" strikes a more nightmarish note in its use of discordant synth drones.

Review: More classic and emotive techno sounds from a Detroit/Sheffield state of mind, from the always impressive John Shima, following up great releases on Firescope and Instruction. His new offering courtesy on the recently returned Exalt imprint is "Discreet" - a sombre, bleep fuelled epic, with a subtle flourish of funk and backed by the trademark clang and clatter of classic Roland drum machines. On the flip, underrated legend Matthew Puffett aka Future Beat Alliance takes the track into deeper hi-tech soul territory on his awe-inspiring rendition.

  2. See Through (East India Youth remix) (7:57)
Review: London-based Norwegian producer Sasha Siem receives the remix treatment for Blue Plum's latest outing; two tracks which featured on her recent Most Of The Boys LP, for the same label. First up, its house oddball Matthew Herbert who's called up for duty and he quickly proceeds to destroy "Proof" and transform it into a stumbling mass of bubbly low-ends, sparse percussion bursts and with Siem's own wailing vocals riding shotgun. On the flipside, we have East India Youth rewiring "See Through" into an eerie techno stepper backed by Siem's voice, except this time the words are processed into waves of atmpherics. Beautiful and deadly.

  6. Loop Six
Review: The Purification Loops may be Sigha's debut proper on Avian, but the Berlin-based producer is no stranger to the label operated by Shifted and Ventress. There have been numerous Sigha remixes on Avian releases since the label was established, and Avian have also revealed he was behind the self-styled "S & M techno tools" project A Vision Of Love. Some six tracks deep, The Purification Loops find Sigha "blurring the lines between the dance floor and the ritual chamber" and it fits right in with the direction explored recently by anonymous Swedish duo SHXCXCHCXSH on their Avian return. Prolonged repetition seems to be the order of the day, even if this takes a more meditative form on "Loop Three" or club ready in others - "Loop Four" and "Five" seem destined to test the structures of the more heady techno clubs.

  3. Down (Function remix) (6:50)
  4. Black Massing (Wata Igarashi Daylight Breaks remix) (6:54)
Review: Techno's dark lord James Shaw aka Sigha released some pitch black techno experiments on the Metabolism LP for Belgian peak time techno specialists Token earlier this year. His second album now gets a series of fantastic remixes by some of the most distinct talents of the scene at present. Japanese hypnotic techno expert Wata Igarashi serves up not one but two remixes of "Black Massing". First up is is the Dusk Falls remix which deconstructs trance in the vein of Donato Dozzy into an epic, hyperaware, strobe-lit ascension to the stratosphere. His second on the flip is the Daylight Breaks remix - this is more subtle/ethereal in nature and allows those floaty melodies and multi-layered pads to do most of the work. Further proof that Italians do it better comes in the form of Marco Shuttle's rework of "Morning Star". This sees the Berlin based producer take you for a journey deep into the exotic on this downbeat experiment in trace induction. Elsewhere, veteran producer Function delivers the goods as always - his fierce and tunnelling remix "Down" is undoubtedly the most straight ahead offering here.

Review: Following the likes of Decka, Edeka and Tans A.M, Brooklyn's Significant Other steps up to the Berlin fusion fray with his own take on techno. Sitting somewhere between dub, electro, ambient, techno and D&B, each cut is an abyssal experience powered by spacious beats and thick, moody otherworldly atmospheres. "Delphic" the banger of the set with 150 halftime kicks giving a stark two-step D&B sensation, "Break The Web" takes 20,000 leagues under the sea and squeezes the air out of us while "Triptan" brings us back up to air with ambient mysticism. Significant.

  2. Patience (6:13)
Review: After putting out a free compilation last year, Biome and Madam X's Kaizen label attained a sense of legitimacy in 2016 when they started putting out vinyl. After Biome took care of the first 12", Kaizen turn to Brotherhood paring Silas & Snare for this second offering, a killer two-track exercise in modern bass science. Title track "Biometric" demonstrates how well this Leeds duo utilise the sense of space in their productions, all elements crisply and sharply executed and built around that laser-like bassline. Complementing this, "Patience" sees Silas & Snare bring their percussive structures to the fore, all brushed textures shooting in intricate patterns for a fine club tool.

  1. Lust Abandon
  2. Lust Abandon (Powell reconstruction)
Review: Having inaugurated the Jealous God label on a collaborative 12? with Semantica boss Svreca, Juan Mendez returns here to helm the third 'issue' under his Silent Servant guise. The more feverish Downwards completists will recognise "Lust Abandon" as a track Mendez committed to tape for a limited split cassette release with Regis earlier this year which was issued exclusively through Los Angeles vinyl emporium Mount Analogue. The chance to grip it on vinyl should not be passed up as "Lust Abandon" finds Mendez expanding on the deathly drawl that made up much of his excellent 2012 LP Negative Fascination, though there's a noted drop in tempo which serves to highlight how good a producer he is. Flip it over and Diagonal boss Powell turns in a splendidly ramshackle reconstruction that's driven by typically recycled no wave drums that always appear on the verge of collapsing. Do check the accompanying mix CD which comes from cult Boston-based DJ Ning Nong and features tracks by Duran Duran, Primal Scream, Ancient Methods and Mira Calix.

  3. Broken English Club - "Divinity"
  4. Broken English Club - "Delays"
Review: ** Repress ** If you've been keeping abreast of all things Minimal Wave this year, you'll probably have picked up on Veronica Vasicka hinting at a forthcoming split release from Silent Servant and Broken English Club, the new project from UK techno man Oliver Ho. We've certainly been eagerly awaiting it her at Juno HQ and it's great to see Violence And Divinity live up to and surpass these expectations! Silent Servant mans the A Side with two tracks that will be familiar to anyone that's been lucky enough to catch his live sets of late, indeed it's almost too easy to visualise the flashing strobes as the pummelling EBM lines of "Cut Unconscious" unravel and beat you down. The two accompanying productions from Ho's Broken English Club dovetail nicely, but veer off into more wave orientated territory, with "Divinity" sounding quite like some of the earlier material put out by In Aeternam Vale. In a word superb.

  2. Santiago Salazar - "Corazon"
Review: Killer repress of the third release on Santiago Salazar's Historia Y Violencia imprint. This 12" is a split release featuring Salazar and his LA cohort Silent Servant. The timing is impeccable, with Mr Servant recently showcasing his unique talent across a seven track LP for the Hospital Productions imprint. On the A-Side, Silent Servant's "Mi Alma" is bathed in the kind of atmosphere that characterised the producer's records for Sandwell District (RIP), all moody chords and loops that accumulate menace as they stalk towards the runout groove, Salazar's "Corazon" comparatively lighter in tone, with a star-gazing melody lending the cut a hazy, gentle charm.
