  1. Overcome (9:08)
  2. Lady Science (NYC Sunrise) (9:24)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: relik returns with a repackaged edition of one of the catalogue's most treasured releases. "Overcome" and "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)" need little introduction, and now come sporting the new TR11:11 matrix number. Written and produced by Thomas Melchior and Baby Ford aka Soul Capsule, these tracks came from one of the many sessions recorded at the West London Ifach Studio in 1999. On the A Side "Overcome" is stripped back and energetic, driven by rolling and shuffling garage style beats, tight bubbling bass and atmospheric synth pads. The intermittent vocal samples and the release's signature organ set you up for the flip, "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)". Possibly one of house music's most emotive pieces, the track builds slowly with the introduction of each part building a story of soulful optimism based around a sparse palette of deep synths, uplifting keys and warm analogue bass. The understated beauty of the main vocal riff never seems to grow old or tired with the track lending itself perfectly to either main room, peak-time play or after-hours sessions alike. Remastered by Rashad at D & M.

  1. SoulPhiction - "Sky So High" (5:52)
  2. Mike Dehnert - "Zumwald" (6:39)
Review: Bang, boom, biff! New label alert from contemporary house maestros Soulphiction and Mike Dehnert, a collaboration which has caught us by surprise and left us trailing by the wayside. Masterful. Hands & Tief is the name of the home to this punchy two-tracker that sees both artists put on their techno mask and offer something a little moodier than their usual output, respectively. "Sky So High" is Soulphiction going for a distorted, industrial approach and it works like a charm; the tune's percussion is raw and mashable in any mix, the bassline ominous and intriguing, and the groove powerful and body-moving. Mike Dehnert's "Zumwald" is more in line with his usual bags of tricks, except that here the lower frequencies are more aligned to the electro dynasty than a classic 'Berlin' approach. Both sleek, effective dance floor bangers recommended for pretty much any DJ wanting to lay down some heat!

Dilemma (12")
Cat: STR 12021. Rel: 07 Jan 19
  1. Dilemma (5:31)
  2. Switch (Techno mix) (5:35)
Review: Lately, interest has been growing in the turn-of-the-'90s work of Stefan van Elsen, a Belgian producer arguably best known for his ambient-leaning work with brother Dimitri as Trans4m. Now Stroom has decided to reissue two more dancefloor-leaning cuts from the van Elsen production line. On side A you'll find "Dilemma", a solo cut Stefan produced as Sound Mercenary that layers glassy-eyed, life-affirming synth riffs and Inner City style stabs over a breakbeat-tinged, bass-heavy Belgian techno groove. Over on side B you'll find another 1991 gem: the van Elsen brothers' response to bleep-heavy British bleep and hardcore, "Switch (Techno Mix)". Built around booming sub-bass, Kraftwerk bleeps, dreamy pads and electro-fired breakbeats, the track remains a timeless dancefloor workout.

  1. Apologies
  2. Outside In
  3. Lever
  4. In Wait
Review: Having previously surfaced on the Filtered compilation for Bleep, John Flynn's Spaces project returns with more intricate and playful electronica for the Warp subsidiary that more solidly establishes him as an artist of note for anyone who enjoys a good glitch-out. "Apologies" works rapid fire fragments and occasional sweeps of big bass into a tricksy time signature arrangement, while "Outside In" takes a slightly more measured approach to crafty electro. "Lever" too works catchy elements into a slick and addictive funk, with plenty of interference to keep things out in leftfield, before "In Wait" rounds things off with a more twitchy affair bolstered by looping piano fragments and interesting atmospheric disturbances.

  1. Curtain Twitcher (Nina Kraviz Alice Was Here remix) (8:00)
  2. Curtain Twitcher (Nina Kraviz Samba version) (5:00)
  3. Looking Glass (5:44)
  4. Tiresias (Anastasia Kristensen rework) (7:32)
Review: Unsurprisingly, Paul Woolford's Special Request project has become a reference point for London's Houndstooth imprint, the label ran and operated by Fabric, and he's back once more to drop the freshest techno sounds around. What makes this 12" even more special is a two-part appearance from Nina Kraviz, who remixes "Curtain Twitcher" twice, the first being a moody, hubby techno experiment and the second a more light-hearted 'Samba version' that carries the same sort of future-minimalism that says so much with so little. On the flip, "Looking Glass" is a heavy-handed, bad-mannered jungle experiment that lays down an insanely heavy groove of banging breaks sparse bleeps; Anastasia Kristensen's rework of "Tiresias" thrashes out a punitive techno bullet that, once again, is made for a contemporary techno floor.

Secret Elements EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: PERP 001. Rel: 22 Oct 18
  1. Specter & Chicagodeep - "Sonar Pulse" (Linkwood edit)
  2. Chicagodeep - "Restless Nights"
  3. Taelue - "Social Anxiety"
  4. Taelue - "Rogue Access Point"
Review: REPRESS ALERT: The debut release from US label Perpetual Rhythms comes in the shape of an EP of collaborations and single drops entitled Secret Elements. Firecracker boss Linkwood provides some extra Chi-Town edge to the sombre melodies and science fiction synths of Specter & Chicagodeep's "Sonic Pulse" on his opening edit, whilst Chicagodeep's "Restless Nights" generates a mix of spacey, laid back vibes. The bleepy pulses of Taelue's "Social Anxiety" sounds close to what an Aphex Twin and Jerome Sydenham & Kerri Chandler house collaboration would result in, while the single rimshots and wallowing pads of "Rough Access Point" give the track a distinctly lonesome ambience.

  1. Goloko Dhama
  2. Sadhu
Review: Once a compelling production unit on the superb Thisisnotanexit label, it's been a while since we heard anything from the Spectral Empire duo of Kyle Martin & George Thompson. More recently the pair has been engaged in other projects, with Martin collaborating with Jonny Nash as Land Of Light and Thompson casting a cosmic spell on the Andy's Weatherall and Blake with his Black Merlin output. Back together as Spectral Empire for this 12" on Nu Earth Kitchen, Martin and Thompson's studio chemistry hasn't dissipated in the time apart on the basis of the two cuts here. Lead track "Goloko Dhama" uses it's nine minute duration wisely as Spectral Empire go deep into a brooding sci fi flecked disco groove. Face down "Sadhu" finds Martin and Thompson veer into almost techno territory driven by some brilliantly sputtery 808s.

  1. Pipe Bomb (1)
  2. Pipe Bomb (2)
Review: Sound Signature are at it again with their dark, driving and jackin' grooves. Every time Theo Parrish decides a tune is worth pressing up nice and loud on vinyl, it's wise to pay attention. And so it proves here, with Chicago native Spekter dropping one-sided 12" "Pipe Bomb", a deadly and pounding excursion into the murkier corners of house music. It's not one for the faint hearted either, as an overwhelming sense of moodiness pushes ever forward, dripping in twisted samples and heavy techno kicks.

Review: Saginaw brothers Ben and Zachary (aka Shigeto) only launched the Portage Garage Sounds imprint this year, and already they've come through with some absolute beasts! For this latest outing, Zachary Saginaw and Bill Spender come through as Spencer & Saginaw, putting Michigan firmly back on the electronic map with the headstrong "Real Talk", a tune which perhaps doesn't bang as hard as others, but that certainly has all the grove and charisma of the some of the finest Omar S tunes. There's also an instrumental cut, and the hollow landscapes of the AmbACID version of "B_W".

Review: SRVD is the new collaboration between Rekids main man Matt Edwards and German art director, illustrator and model Patrick Mason. The pair supposedly met on Berlin's club scene, which led to a gradual form of collaboration - hanging out at the studio later evolved into improvised performances in their fair city and beyond. Their first single "Elevate" perfectly captures the raw spirit and vibe of their live show, which they recently premiered at the infamous Panorama Bar. A chugging, moody and heads-down affair for the back room, plus the hyperactive/bombastic jack of "Nasty" which features another arresting vocal delivery by Mason.

  3. Stabilize (Mark & Matt Thibideau Reconstruction) (7:21)
Review: The 'Reconstructed' series has featured reworks by legends such as Steve O'Sullivan, Thomas Melchior and Cobblestone Jazz, whose take on tracks from Paul St. Hilaire and Rhauder's debut LP Derdeoc was originally released in 2017. On the third and final edition in the series, the Berlin based duo's work gets remixed first by the Philpot affiliated Soulphiction who gives "Redeem" a truly fervent re-rub - this is utter dancefloor drama in the vein of Carl Craig. Argentinian veteran Leonel Castillo gets a slinky, bass-heavy groove on with his dub-laden rendition of "Stabilize" while the equally revered Thibideau brothers work their magic as always on their glacial re-rub of the track: where the Canadian twins take it into cavernous territory. They truly conjure those ghosts in the machines on this killer remix.

  1. Redlamp 10A
  2. Slow
  3. C Rol
Review: Ruf Kutz' eighth release comes from Stalker, originally a trance producer from Denmark that's now delving into a dubby realm of techno production. Opening the three track EP are the heavily effected and tearing chords of "Redlamp 10A", which relentlessly strafe the track arrangement, while "Slow" sees Stalker settle the pace of the A-side, replacing harsher saw waves with softer, effervescent pads. Festive tambourines and a firm four-four kick create the backbone of "C Rol", which then allows an endless bobble of dubby stabs and short burst chords to move freely throughout the piece.
