  2. Steffi - "IE-4" (5:45)
  3. Mark Broom - "Drum Jamz 2" (5:35)
  4. Strain - "Theory" (6:09)
Review: Following up from an impressive first edition, DVS1's imprint Mistress is devoted to secret weapons of the house and techno variety - plus all sounds in between. Much like the previous edition, it has its sights set on surefire techno tools for the main room. Rotterdam's Benny Rodrigues impresses as always, but with something different than what we're used to on the stripped back dub techno aesthetic of "Duchi Kaal". Fellow Berghain/Panorama Bar resident Steffi hands in a stellar effort on the loopy, trance inducing sorcery of "IE-4" and the legendary Mark Broom (of Pure Plastic and Rue East fame) has got the right credentials to do old-school - and he sure ticks all the right boxes on the classic Chi-town jack of "Drum Jamz 2".

Blindness (12")
Cat: DYSTOPIAN 002. Rel: 04 Dec 12
  1. Blindness
  2. Patient Zero
  3. Hope
Review: We've been eagerly awaiting the second portion of Rodhad's metallic techno on Berlin's Dystopian and good things do come to those who wait. The mysterious producer has made his personal brand of 4/4 standout among the huge number of releases available at Hardwax, gaining full support from artists like Blawan. "Blindness" is indeed a surprise; with no visible percussion in sight, it's a dense soundscape with nothing more than a dissolving vocal and background crackles to accompany it. "Patient Zero" enters more familiar territories, creating an irresistible groove out of few elements: a ringing melody, heavy kick drums and a cascade of hi-hats - simple but extremely effective! Over on the flip, "Hope" is a darker shade of grey, placing that sparse, rolling percussion next to a squealing bass line growing frantically - a guaranteed TIP!

  2. Kinder Der Ringwelt (5:50)
  3. Planet Der Verlorenen (4:41)
  4. Venusianische Holle (2:32)
Review: Few producers have been quite as influential in shaping the Dystopian sound as label co-founder Mike 'Rodhad' Bierbach. He was responsible for the imprint's first two releases in 2012, and returned last year with the undeniably spooky Red Rising EP. This time round, he seems more inspired by the near endless sprawl of the universe, giving sublime opener "Im Glanz Des Mondes" a classic intergalactic techno feel. While "Kinder Der Ringwelt" itself is dark, moody and hypnotic, and "Planet Der Verlorenen" is unashamedly creepy, there's plenty of beauty to be found in "Venusianische Holle". It's the aural equivalent of drifting through space, alone with your thoughts.

  3. Lookitthat (Silent Servant remix) (6:50)
  4. Kinder Der Ringwelt (Donato Dozzy remix) (6:51)
Review: Hirsute Red Panda member Rodhad has been turning out Teutonic techno treats for the best part of 5 years. Here, he gets to sit back and watch as a quartet of producers remix tracks from his back catalogue. O [Phase] kicks things off, layering ghostly, stretched-out pads over crispy drums on a formidable version of "Im Glanz Des Mondes", before Peter Ricks turns "Vivarium" into a dusty, distorted, off-kilter chunk of eccentric industrial techno. On the flip, Silent Servant dips the tempo and reaches for picturesque synthesizer arpeggio lines and chugging beats on an evocative revision of "Lookithat", while Donato Dozzy serves up a typically moody, locked-in, late night techno take on "Kinder Der Ringwelt".

  6. State IX (interlude II) (1:13)
Review: Former Playhouse and Bio Rhythm man Roger Reuter has only one previous album to his name, the woozy, edge-of-reason ambience of 2015's Mensch 001. Extended Play is its' follow up, and sees the experienced German producer appear on Ilian Tape for the first time. Rooted in his usual brand of unsettling, otherworldly ambience, the six tracks variously draw influence from early IDM, drone, dub techno, industrial and experimental film soundtracks. Despite these nods to familiar experimental styles, it's an album that can easily be listened to in a variety of situations, and never drags. It's strongest moments, such as the mournful ambient throb of "State IIX Interlude II", are particularly beguiling.

  3. How Good Is The Party
  4. Twotet
Review: Dream Diary is a label operating out of Brixton that has previously featured the likes of Afriqua, Tom Gillieron and Richie Littler on its roster, and now it's the turn of the head honcho Oslo Roma to serve up some more of that subversive four-to-the-floor business. "Mars Water" is an infectious minimal roller with bass that wraps itself around your cerebellum and pulls you in deeper, while "Bubbles" does the same but without any drums to buffet it along. "How Good Is The Party" is a more experimental affair that deals with off kilter rhythmic fragments and spaced out textures, leaving EP closer "Twotet" to drop a more immediate slice of electro on the situation.

  3. Flint (OVR remix) (7:29)
  4. Komatiite (Broken English Club remix) (4:53)
Review: Blueprint bosse James Ruskin has gathered together an impressive cast-list of producers to rework tracks from Rommek's recent trilogy of EPs, Set In Stone. Ruskin is naturally one of these, and his creepy, atmospheric revision of "Grintstone" - all mangled metallic noise, slowly throbbing orchestration, distorted drums and booming bass - is undoubtedly one the EP's highlights. Also impressive is OVR's moody, hybrid electro/broken techno take on "Flint", while Blueprint veteran Oliver Ho steals the show (as Broken English Club) with a clanking and spacey version of "Komatiite" that fixes poignant, melancholic chords and barely audible spoken word vocals to a heavy slo-mo beat. Meanwhile, if thrusting industrial techno is your thing, check out the pots-and-pans percussion and intense bass of Makaton's version of "Obsidian".

  3. Arkose (6:10)
  4. Flint (5:07)
Review: Rommek has hit a rich vein of form since pitching up on Blueprint Records a couple of years back. Sedimentary is his fourth solo EP for James Ruskin and Richard Polson's long running label, and once again features some seriously good material. We're particularly enjoying the electro-influenced swing of broken techno opener "Grey Wacke", where pulsating riffs slightly reminiscent of Orbital classic "Walk Now" buzz around foreboding chords and fizzing, mind-altering electronics. There's plenty to set the pulse racing elsewhere, though, from the dystopian industrial techno heaviness of "Grintstone" and rubbery, broken techno bounce of "Arkose", to the unsettling, sub-bass driven ambient trip that is wayward closer "Flint".

  1. Will I Make The Turn? (7:21)
  2. Sorry...I Can't (6:35)
Review: Roshan Chauhan aka R.O.S.H. is a British producer and studio engineer that has released previously on his eponymous and Drumz For Eternity imprints, but now inaugurates the Negative Spaces label. The team behind the label held their first event in the intimate confines of London's Waiting Room back in March with Tasha, Object Blue and here is the first release. The A side features the rather hypnotic "Will I Make The Turn?" awash in spectacular layers of melody and all round futurist aesthetic. On the flip, it's a more straight-ahead affair with the bass driven "Sorry...I Can't" aimed squarely at A.M. dance floors with its strobe-lit/heads down aesthetic.

  1. Ross From Friends - "High Energy" (5:47)

  3. Duplex - "Isolator" (6:06)
Review: While the release of nd_baumecker's "Panoramabar 07" mix may have been delayed indefinitely due to "licensing issues", this second vinyl sampler has happily made it past the lawyers. Like its predecessor, it contains a trio of previously unreleased tracks. Ross From Friends kicks things off with "High Energy", a surprisingly cheery and sun-kissed blend of bouncy deep house drums, lilting pedal steel guitar motifs and drowsy, "Twin Peaks" style chords. Sometime Circus Company regular Dave Aju impresses via the cut-up vocal samples, melodious sub-bass, and broken house rhythms of "Wayahed", while Duplex steals on the show on side B with the intertwined synthesizer melodies, rush-inducing positivity and shuffling lo-fi deep house beats of "Isolator".

Review: There's only been one other release to date on the aptly titled Night Sea Journey, whose M.O. is, "focused on simplicity." The Chicago label started life with label heads Garrett David and Colin Johnson, and now Adam Rowe has come to join in with his own take on simple approaches in ambient and deep house. "9_27 (edit 1)" may have a lovely sub bass propelling it, but the languorous quality of the keys makes it feel almost static in the best possible way. "8_27 (edit 1)" welcomes some needlepoint drum machine rhythms into the mix, preferring a broken beat over anything too straight. "Nite Houss" has a similar mysterious charm you might hear on a Real Soon record, while "Hanging Lake" swerve into more ambient territory again, with spectacular results.

  1. The Smallest Footprints (7:40)
  2. The Ends Of Weather (6:42)
  3. Nest Of Queens (7:08)
Review: Probably for good reason, techno deviant Rrose isn't as active as he was a few years back. However, we see this as a winning strategy - building and maintain momentum up until the very moment the bombs drop. Back on his own EAUX label, we have three new, blurry technoid structures made for the more finessed ears. "The Smallest Footprints" dazzles and confuses with its constantly shape-shifting groove, guided and supported by an ocean of deep-water sonics and atmospheric harmonies, whereas "The Ends Of Weather" itself sounds like the beginning of the perfect storm, gliding with tenebrous might across its six minutes and 42 seconds of instability and beatless sway. On the B-side, "Nest Of Queens" manages to do very much with very little, launching a minimalistic percussion flex that evolves at its own pace, twisting and convulsing more and more with each new bang of the beat. What a stunner. Be quick, these will go!

Review: Rrose continues to serve up occasional slabs of mind-altering techno gold, primarily on the Eaux label the producer established in 2012 after parting company with Sandwell District. This year-ending missive is as impressive as it is mind-altering and thought provoking. Opener "Beware of Shells" delivers a trippy and intoxicating blend of rhythmic modular noise and foreboding electronics, before the creepy "Incisors" leads us gently by the hard towards peak-time techno dancefloors. Elsewhere, "The Swelling" serves up buzzing, mangled white noise, "Sister (Remix)" is a psychedelic, mid-tempo modular techno chugger, and closing cut "Pecking Order" is a particularly dystopian chunk of otherworldly ambient.

  4. One More Sometime (3:57)
Review: For their latest release, Pittsburgh Tracks has turned to Shawn Rudiman, an experienced producer arguably best known for previous releases on Applied Rhythmic Technology, Matrix and Detroit Techno Militia. There are four quality cuts to choose from, of which the muted Detroit futurism of "Works On Paper" - classic sounding riffs and spacey electronics over a rolling techno groove - and the acid-fired deep space thrust of "Switching Rails" are our picks for peak-time plays. That said, ultra-deep, daydreaming IDM closer "One More Sometime" is also superb, while "Last Light On" is a deep and driving techno box jam. In other words, it's an excellent EP.
