Roll Off (12")
Cat: RS 03/22704. Rel: 23 May 98
  1. Roll Off/S
  2. Roll Off/B
Review: The R&S label has many similarities to the legendary Basic Channel label. Although the vibe isn't 'that technoid' anymore, an astonishing range of tracks is presented here. Every 12" so far stands for itself. 'Roll Off' is a deep shaped and pulsating ambient tune in two parts with a unique sound scape of organic chords and coloured noises.

Review: The A-side introduces vocalist Savage with a beautiful, relaxed spoken word tune. Savage's reasoning over these subtle pulses combined with its rather restrained produced sound sphere is full of hypnotic power. The B-side contains two noise exploring ambient tracks.

Aground (12")
Cat: RS 07/38334. Rel: 06 Sep 02
  1. Aground (12:38)
  2. Aerial (9:25)
Review: This time the vibe is very dubby while the general characteristics of the R&S soundscape remain constant. The use of ultra short vocal fragments to build a typical R&S ambient atmosphere is a novelty and gives 'Aground' its specialty.

Trace (12")

  1. Trace
  2. Imprint
Review: The groove of R&S won't stop. Every 12" seems to go on where the predecessor stopped. What one keeps on riding this train is the ever refreshing sound scape of every new release with its echoes of the processing 12"s. A continuous self re-invention is going on with a good portion of accidental mutations in the sound sphere.

Carrier (12")
Cat: RS 05/26636. Rel: 01 Jan 90
  1. Carrier
  2. Density
  3. Outward
Review: The dub aspects on these electronics are less obvious but can be traced within the way of the arrangements. Multiple layers of more or less coloured noisy and organic soundscapes are put together to form a kind of ambient that has the force to slow down time itself. The perfect music to heal hyperactive urbaners - just sit down, listen, watch, do nothing.

Cat: SHUBAKA 01. Rel: 22 Sep 14

  3. No Name No Dub
  4. 12bits
Review: Last year Jose Rico surfaced on Semantica, which for emerging producers is one of the best stamps of approval you can have. His first release since then is this London Calling EP which inaugurates the Shubaka label, newly launched operation whose inspiration seems to combine Star Wars' Chubaka with classical composers the artwork is any reference. "Afofaifa" is a challenging listen and one for the freaks at the end of a long club night (if they can handle it), while "Supernova" is deep and lo-fi. "No Name No Dub" flirts with dub techno and dusty house music as does "12bits" but without the woozy dub elements.

Poems On Healing A Broken Heart (limited hand-stamped 12" + insert)
Cat: REALITYUSEDTOBEAFRIENDOFMINE 20181. Rel: 18 Sep 18
  1. Goodbye (5:50)
  2. In My Heart (5:28)
  3. Heal Yourself (10:18)
Review: Drop the needle on the first track of "Poems To Heal a Broken Heart", the latest EP from Berlin producer Steffen Laschinski's Rising Sun Project, and you'll be a treated to a track the subtly shifts in emphasis over the course of its duration. "Goodbye" is stunning, all told, moving from dreamy, melodious bliss to breakbeat-driven high-octane thrills in six spellbinding minutes. There's much to enjoy elsewhere, too. "In My Heart" is a hyonotic, undeniably poignant trip into ultra-deep house territory smothered in deliciously dreamy chords, while B-side "Heal Yourself" - a ten-minute fusion of fizzing ambient electronics, rising and falling melodies and breath-taking synthesizer lines - could well be the best of the bunch.

STE
Cat: STE 00002. Rel: 18 Jun 18
  1. The Circle
  2. AC
Review: Ste Roberts steps up with the second instalment on his self-titled label, once again burrowing into the more mysterious corners of the house and techno spectrum to deliver distinctive dancefloor gold for those who like their beats a little different. "The Circle" is a nocturnal affair that matches dark techno atmospherics with a rigorous housey bump, and the results are stellar. "AC" is equally tough, although in this instance the main ingredient is a rattling conga sample that has a raw, live and in the room quality that contrasts the unrelenting kick drum perfectly.

  1. Poem 87 (7:43)
  2. Broken Sleep (6:12)
Review: Ste Roberts has popped up intermittently over the years alongside the likes of Marc Ashken, DJ Linus and Will Azada, but now he's taking a focused step into the fray with his own hand-stamped 12" series, packed full of crafty techno variations for adventurous souls. "Poem 87" is a stripped down and nasty workout with a submerged rhythm and a housey groove that feels like it's itching to worm its way onto the dancefloor, while "Broken Sleep" takes a more full-bodied approach with all kinds of trippy synth interplay feeding into a noirish, dynamic atmosphere. It's a record of two distinct halves, both of which crackle with ingenuity and personality to stand out from the crowd.

  3. Mark Broom - "Drum Jamz 2" (5:35)
  4. Strain - "Theory" (6:09)
Review: Following up from an impressive first edition, DVS1's imprint Mistress is devoted to secret weapons of the house and techno variety - plus all sounds in between. Much like the previous edition, it has its sights set on surefire techno tools for the main room. Rotterdam's Benny Rodrigues impresses as always, but with something different than what we're used to on the stripped back dub techno aesthetic of "Duchi Kaal". Fellow Berghain/Panorama Bar resident Steffi hands in a stellar effort on the loopy, trance inducing sorcery of "IE-4" and the legendary Mark Broom (of Pure Plastic and Rue East fame) has got the right credentials to do old-school - and he sure ticks all the right boxes on the classic Chi-town jack of "Drum Jamz 2".

Blindness (12")
Cat: DYSTOPIAN 002. Rel: 04 Dec 12
  1. Blindness
  2. Patient Zero
  3. Hope
Review: We've been eagerly awaiting the second portion of Rodhad's metallic techno on Berlin's Dystopian and good things do come to those who wait. The mysterious producer has made his personal brand of 4/4 standout among the huge number of releases available at Hardwax, gaining full support from artists like Blawan. "Blindness" is indeed a surprise; with no visible percussion in sight, it's a dense soundscape with nothing more than a dissolving vocal and background crackles to accompany it. "Patient Zero" enters more familiar territories, creating an irresistible groove out of few elements: a ringing melody, heavy kick drums and a cascade of hi-hats - simple but extremely effective! Over on the flip, "Hope" is a darker shade of grey, placing that sparse, rolling percussion next to a squealing bass line growing frantically - a guaranteed TIP!

  2. Kinder Der Ringwelt (5:50)
  3. Planet Der Verlorenen (4:41)
  4. Venusianische Holle (2:32)
Review: Few producers have been quite as influential in shaping the Dystopian sound as label co-founder Mike 'Rodhad' Bierbach. He was responsible for the imprint's first two releases in 2012, and returned last year with the undeniably spooky Red Rising EP. This time round, he seems more inspired by the near endless sprawl of the universe, giving sublime opener "Im Glanz Des Mondes" a classic intergalactic techno feel. While "Kinder Der Ringwelt" itself is dark, moody and hypnotic, and "Planet Der Verlorenen" is unashamedly creepy, there's plenty of beauty to be found in "Venusianische Holle". It's the aural equivalent of drifting through space, alone with your thoughts.

  1. Helldiver
  2. Mines Of Mars
  3. Rising
Review: There's a specific kink to the kind of dark and potent techno that Rodhad crafts. Back once again on Dystopian, the Red Rising EP offers up three examples of how to push things forward in the more serious corners of the techno menagerie. "Hell Diver" works around the cyclical motion of a few key ingredients to create a measured malice that will do nothing for your disposition, with slight touches of foreign sounds in those choice moments to make the ears dart around in paranoia. "Mines Of Mars" meanwhile lets a bleepy bassline head out in front with some playful fills creating a distinctive quality to the synth. "Rising" finishes proceedings off with a stout floor worker buttoned up so tight it might combust at any moment.

  3. Lookitthat (Silent Servant remix) (6:50)
  4. Kinder Der Ringwelt (Donato Dozzy remix) (6:51)
Review: Hirsute Red Panda member Rodhad has been turning out Teutonic techno treats for the best part of 5 years. Here, he gets to sit back and watch as a quartet of producers remix tracks from his back catalogue. O [Phase] kicks things off, layering ghostly, stretched-out pads over crispy drums on a formidable version of "Im Glanz Des Mondes", before Peter Ricks turns "Vivarium" into a dusty, distorted, off-kilter chunk of eccentric industrial techno. On the flip, Silent Servant dips the tempo and reaches for picturesque synthesizer arpeggio lines and chugging beats on an evocative revision of "Lookithat", while Donato Dozzy serves up a typically moody, locked-in, late night techno take on "Kinder Der Ringwelt".
