Grey City Anthem (1-sided 12")
Cat: ZCKR 12. Rel: 11 Jan 16
  1. Grey City Anthem (11:22)
Review: The mysterious Qnete tied off 2015 in fine style, landing on London's Lobster Theremin with a saucy little white label that rocked our speakers out. He's back early doors in this new year, and he's landed on the shadowy ZCKR label with a phat slab of electro that'll wake you the **** up, and take the dance floor by the balls. The one-sided plate, entitled "Grey City Anthem", is a storming slice of dark, neural electro funk that sounds like it's been constructed in 3D. Huge moulds of acid unfold onto grainy drum machine beats, and a swarm of disjointed, raucous bells. Hard stuff, good and proper for this time of the year.

Cat: WHYT 007. Rel: 22 Jun 16
  1. Cylinders (6:58)
  2. Cope (3:56)
  3. Sa45 Circles (6:20)
Review: Some two years on from debuting with the Acid Beth 12" for Young Turks, London producer and carpenter Quirke resurfaces for the latest single from Nic Tasker's Whities label. Once you get past the rather sumptuous sleeve art for Whities 007, Josh Quirke has delivered a really intriguing triplet of productions here. The Beatrice Dillon-approved "Cylinders" can best be described as star gazing trance music shorn of beats (weightless trance anyone?) whilst "Cope" is a brief exercise in scratchy beat design that will appeal to fans of Bruce's "Relevant Again." Quirke saves the best till last with the snapping "Sa 45 Circles" which is reminiscent of Selected Ambient Works-era Aphex Twin.

4 (10")
Cat: RM10 001. Rel: 06 Sep 17
  1. 4 (6:01)
  2. American (6:47)
Review: QY is Leipzig based Friedmann Lichtenthal who makes his debut for local institution R.A.N.D. Muzik (the company behind such esteemed imprints like Out To Lunch and United States Of Mars) that has released previously on local imprint Ortloff and Italy's Quality Vibe recently. This 10 inch features "4" on the A side: a hypnotic minimal techno cut with some immaculately programmed rhythms, trippy textures and celestial pads: all adding to its trance inducing allure. On the flip, "American" is a dubbed out excursion in deepness; brooding and nefarious yet seductive all the same. Perfect to find that comfort zone at the afterhours or chill to at home afterwards. Tip!

Cat: RZONE 01. Rel: 17 Apr 13
  1. Houz Nation
  2. Rattler
  3. Smile Little Zoe
Review: R-Zone is an intriguing new label venture from Global Darkness, the Dutch DJ collective affiliated with Creme Organization and the Godspill mailorder site. The basic premise of R-Zone is to put out a series of anonymous 12"s from established artists, with the intent of shifting the focus away from namedropping and perception based on hype around individual artists and bringing it back where it belongs; in the lap of the music. It's an intriguing exercise for a label to undertake in the current climate and given the list of artists supposedly down to contribute - everyone from JD Twitch to D'Marc Cantu via Tuff City Kids - it will be interesting to see how people take to R-Zone. The debut release Houz Nation adopts a notably pitched down tone throughout with the detuned rave of the title track and "Smile Little Zoe" sandwiching the mulchy, insect crawling machine funk of "Rattler".

  2. Midwinter (6:17)
  3. Captive (7:38)
  4. Exile (5:22)
Review: Three years on from its debut, Creme Organization's R-Zone series continues to deliver bona fide dancefloor bombs. As usual, they've hidden the identity of the EP's creator (or creators), instead allowing the music to speak for itself. The punchy, bass-heavy "Hired Guns" sounds like something you'd get from Kowton or Lurka, while "Midwinter" layers deep, dreamy electronics on top of a gently jackin' drum machine groove. Flip for the broken beat meets Larry Heard and Phuture flex of "Captive", and the Motor City-in-space brilliance of the throbbing "Exile".

  1. Feel The Same (DJ Koze edit) (6:54)
  2. Reverse (DJ Koze edit) (6:39)
Review: Rekids' special Record Store Day 2018 release features two extraordinary re-edits: of recent Radio Slave tracks by Pampa boss DJ Koze. Taken from his Feel The Same album, Matt Edwards has certainly received a brilliant rendition from the Hamburg legend right here. The euphoric remix of the title track still features the looped-up diva vocals of the original and is exactly the kind of track you'd expect him to drop on a Sunday night one of his his regular appearances at Panorama Bar. On the flip, the hard hitting and tunneling "Reverse" is more on the techno tip and originally appeared as the B-side to 2017's Overdue EP. Both edits are secret weapons for any serious DJ's set.

Pene D'amore Part 1 (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: CDA 019. Rel: 02 Oct 17
  1. Surdinia
  2. Meccanica
Review: Having previously popped up on ESP Institute, Juan Ramos teams up with Trent to form Greenvision, making their first appearance on the home of freshly squeezed discoid deviance, Cocktail D'Amore. "Surdinia" takes over the A side with a bombastic array of peak time devices in its utility belt, from bubbling acid tweaks to gluttonous monosynth leads and a chunky set of drums. "Meccanica" is no slouch either, laying down thick slabs of synthesized grease in pursuit of a different kind of party track. This is unusual, distinctive club music for those who want the crowd to stop and pay attention.

  2. Andy Rantzen - "The Dial" (Itch-E & Scratch-E mix)
  3. Laccy - "Spectrum Of Vibrations"
  4. Laccy - "Coincidence Of Opposites"
Review: The fourth installment on Spinning Plates comes from Andy Rantzen and Laccy, featuring a wealth of off-beat techno adventures for wayward souls. Rantzen is an Australian producer with a history remixing the likes of Severed Heads and working alongside Paul Mac as Itch-E & Scratch-E. His lead track "Digital Elf" is a stripped a raw beats n' bleeps workout, while "The Dial" finds Mac chipping in as they rework the track into a deadly old-skool burner for lovers of bleep techno. Laccy has only had one prior outing to date, but sounds in strong form on the sleek and crafty "Spectrum Of Vibrations" and delightfully freaky "Coincidence Of Opposites".

Cat: KX 09 . Rel: 28 Oct 15
  1. New Generation (6:57)
  2. Conium (6:53)
Review: Another dreamy epic from the Kompakt camp, this time courtesy of Swedish rising star Jonas Rathsman, fresh from having broadcast a rather well received BBC Essential Mix this year. "New Generation" has all the hallmarks of the Cologne label's sound on this sublime and infectious journey track that you could imagine label boss Michael Mayer or Lee Burridge playing out at the right moment. On the flip though is "Conium" which really hammers the message home on this soulful, futuristic epic that could have equally been at home on a label like Innervisions or Life & Death.

  1. Second Take (5:40)
  2. Madit (6:35)
  3. In Wirklich Arango (5:36)
  4. CD (5:56)
Review: Tobias Gullberg invites Smallville's Christopher Rau to the Crime City HQ and it's an open and shut case of total disco deviancy. Each track causing a different riot, Rau's records are looking at series time in playlist choky: "Second Take" is the ultimate trolley dash, speeding down the aisles grabbing every sweet morsel you fancy, "Madit" is a moonlit flit that turns into a techno turbo dash while "In Wirklich Arango" maintains a relentless Detroit momentum before ducking and diving with incisive funk guitar twangs. "CD" closes on a straight-up chug. Low, slow and awash with dreamy chords... The only true crime here would be to sleep on this.

  3. NC 17 - "Gasoline Or Dettol" (6:46)
  4. Mezigue & Christopher Rau - "Honk For Peace" (3:08)
Review: In support of the joys of teamwork, Smallville regular Christopher Rau has launched Totally Together, a new label committed to releasing collaborations between producers. He handles the first 12" himself, joining forces with a succession of artists across four fine tracks. The A-side boasts two hook-ups with Chicago's Hakim Murphy; the sweaty, jackin' drum machine beats and wayward electronics of "Floorz Hop", and the bass-heavy deep house wooziness of "Again Agin" [sic]. On the flip, Rau joins forces with Nathan Jonson as NC 17, delivering the ghetto-house influenced Chi-town bump of "Gasoline or Dettol" (think winding synth horns, crunchy drum machine handclaps and throbbing sub-bass), before laying down the ultra-deep, ultra-melodious "Carrier" alongside Mezigue.
