  3. NC 17 - "Gasoline Or Dettol" (6:46)
  4. Mezigue & Christopher Rau - "Honk For Peace" (3:08)
Review: In support of the joys of teamwork, Smallville regular Christopher Rau has launched Totally Together, a new label committed to releasing collaborations between producers. He handles the first 12" himself, joining forces with a succession of artists across four fine tracks. The A-side boasts two hook-ups with Chicago's Hakim Murphy; the sweaty, jackin' drum machine beats and wayward electronics of "Floorz Hop", and the bass-heavy deep house wooziness of "Again Agin" [sic]. On the flip, Rau joins forces with Nathan Jonson as NC 17, delivering the ghetto-house influenced Chi-town bump of "Gasoline or Dettol" (think winding synth horns, crunchy drum machine handclaps and throbbing sub-bass), before laying down the ultra-deep, ultra-melodious "Carrier" alongside Mezigue.

  1. Luv 4 All
  2. Song 4 Whale
  3. Egyptian Cat
Review: Out of nowhere Robert Crash's Dog In The Night label has swiftly took up it's position at the forefront of frazzled club cuts, calling on some lesser known or indeed unknown artists thus far for a series of 12"s that have caught the ear of selectors such as Ben UFO and Will Bankhead. There is little clue as to the identity of RB, but their triplet of productions here fit right in on Dog In The Night and the humour the label has shown throughout their prior output. the brutal acid slabs making up "Luv 4 All" is anything other than what the track title suggests, while "Song 4 Whale" is nothing like the kind of new age whale song you might expect, combining bloated vocal echoes with lo-fi beats. Both these barely prepare you for the turbulent onslaught of razor sharp drums and atonal bleeps that is release highlight "Egyptian Cat" however.

  2. To A Wild Rose (6:35)
  3. Blue In Green (5:46)
  4. Arboretum (5:45)
  5. Arise & Shine (6:09)
Review: Back once again on Hungary's singular Tape Hiss imprint, RDMA cuts a mysterious figure as per usual and, of course, bashes out some puristic techno waves like few others at the moment. Driven by a rugged and wholesome techno sound that owes much to the Detroit school of thought, tunes like "Passion Dance" and "To A Wild Rose, which dominate the EP's A-side, bounce and pounce with a forward mentality; the sound is dubby and dark, the only mission being to get people up and nodding their heads the blistering 4/4 showers. There's three more bangers on the flip, from the watery and disparate paths of "Blue In Green", to the minimal flex of "Arboretum", and the mechanical movements of "Arise & Shine". If you like you're techno raw and unfiltered, then you've hit the jackpot.

  1. LSD (6:28)
  2. Unravel The Fragments (4:31)
  3. Love Is... (6:42)
  4. In The Blood (6:39)
Review: Often overlooked or under-cited, NYC's Reade Truth is as much a part of the vintage house and techno scene as other, more referenced, artists like Pal Joey or Adam X. In fact, even before his first EPs began to appear in the early 90s, this guy was blasting out tunes in raves all throughout the late 80s, and he clearly knows rave culture like few others. Through labels like Sonic Groove he was able to build a name for himself, and in more recent years he's appeared for others like NSYDE - a Juno favourite! He's now up on San Fran's Warm Fiction, following up on Lerosa's fine opener from last year, and "LSD" opens the festivities with a psychedelic shower of percussion and warm, luscious bass. "Unrave The Fragments" is a more minimal-minded techno tool, while "Love Is..." goes all industrial and dubby, leaving "In The Blood" to glitch its way across the groove. Big up, Truth!

  1. Escape Your Future (7:48)
  2. Replicants (6:16)
  3. Oblique Action (7:19)
Review: More retroactive techno courtesy of the British Unknown To The Unknown camp, this time courtesy of French producer Realitycheck. He has appeared previously for the label with his Untitled Love EP, in addition to a great one on local imprint Renascence. Opening stormer "Escape Your Future" is drenched in analogue soul, just as you like it and channelling the same vibe as Hieroglyphic Being or John Heckle. The emotive "Replicants" is without a doubt the EP's most deep and introspective moment, but still retaining all those rusty classic drum sounds and dusty vintage synths. Finally, on the flip is the sci-fi odyssey that is the title track: classic electro sounds informed from a Motor City perspective and convincingly so. Respect!

EC10 (12")

  1. Liberia
  2. Cleric
  3. EC10
  4. Equilibrium
Review: ** Re(condite)press ** Ever a reliable source of restrained and chilling excursions into experimental techno, Recondite steps up to the burgeoning Dystopian label and brings a selection of tracks that fit the labels implied ethos like a glove. "Liberia" in particular stalks on a broken beat that is just barely audible underneath the clangs and decays of delicate industrial noises, exorcising all manner of minimal demons to an uneasy end. "Cleric" is more forthcoming with a solid 4/4 rhythm and a heartfelt arpeggio but still the vibe is quite a bleak one. "EC10" gets no sunnier, instead pitting morbid synth notes against each other while the rhythmic elements tick into the mix progressively with a healthy amount of weight behind them. "Equilibrium" rounds proceedings off with another study of planting melancholic moods within sterile textures, while those quiet but perfectly pitched drums provide the necessary framework.

  2. Rome (6:20)
Review: There's an uncanny, yet distorted resemblance to the Omar S. Berlin Mix of Gunnar Wendel's "578" in Redshape's raving "Tel Aviv", the first cut from a series of EPs the German plans to release to mark a decade of live performance. To be released across a range of labels, Gerd Janson's Running Back is first up to honour the masked producer with his personal celebration of music. "Rome" on the otherhand swerves any real melody, instead focusing its attentions of snarling white noise, in your face bass and a cut up vocals to make you dance!

  3. Unconventional Spaces (Luca Agnelli remix) (7:26)
  4. Span (5:58)
Review: There's plenty to set the pulse racing on the latest EP from Italian duo Reform, whose previous releases have combined the paranoid darkness and intensity of classic Roman techno with nods towards more melodious - if still raw and razor-sharp - early morning club fare. They're at it again on opener "Unconventional Spaces", peppering a thunderous, kick-drum driven techno groove with poignant chord sequences and stabs that recall both vintage trance and the big-room friendly techno sound of Drumcode. Luca Agnelli delivers an even heavier and more bombastic remix of the same track on side B, which also includes the spacey riff on lightness and darkness that is "Span", where glacial, intergalactic electronics make way for a trance-inducing techno workout.

  1. Collider (6:20)
  2. Neo Cavern (7:12)
  3. Acidity (7:19)
Review: Refracted is on a mission to keep the sound of Berlin techno hard and uncompromising, and as this third installment on the label rolls into earshot it's clear that he knows exactly what he's doing. "Collider" is a fearless exploration of relentless, cyclical rhythm and intensity for complete psychological abandon. Meanwhile "Neo Cavern" slows things right down to a mystical, percussion focused lull that calls to mind the poised menace of Shackleton, and then "Acidity" pushes the energy levels back up with a punchy 303 workout for the looped-up generation. Pure in their vision and deadly in their execution, these tracks confirm Refracted's rising status within the field of uncompromising techno.

  4. Borders (Basic Soul Unit remix) (5:50)
Review: Newcomer Region takes no time to get his credentials across, and this debut EP is all you could possibly ask for from an artist making their way up the food chain. Coming though on the young Jaunt label, Region dishes out some seriously magnificent dub techno lashings here, with the opener "Subline" being something of rough gem; the remix comes from LIES-associate Voiski, and the Frenchman strips the whole thing down to a deeper, murkier tone that we've come to associate him to. "Borders", on the B-side, is a supremely deep and meditative house track with a touch of the 'Shed' in it, and main man Basic Soul Unit drops his version of the tune, a broken beat assemblage with that same dubwise feel that wraps the groove of the original cut.

Review: The don of Birmingham techno Karl O'Connor serves up some live rarities courtesy of retroverts Cititrax. Features recently uncovered recordings of a Regis performance in NYC on January 4th, 1997 at the famed Film Academy. His unmistakeable sound and influence is integral to the DNA of the techno sound, blatantly copied but never matched. Some classics from the Downwards catalogue are contained on this EP in all their austere fashion. "We Said No" "Translation" and "Careless Pedestrian" from his seminal 1996 LP Gymnastics being highlights. The original tapes were discovered by Evan Kreeger, studio work/transfers by James Ruskin in London and audio mastered by Veronica Vasicka in New York.
