  1. Bambam (7:13)
  2. Checksaus (6:05)
  3. Backfat (7:22)
  4. Cloak & Dagger (5:44)
Review: As far as we can make out, this is either a debut single from a previously unseen production talent, or a surprise move towards electro territory from a French indie-pop band whose last release was way back in 2010. Either way, it's a fine EP full of notable highlights. Chief amongst these is "Checksaus", a punchy electro roller blessed with "LFO" style bass, bustling rave-era stabs and lashings of spacey electronics. There's plenty to set the pulse racing elsewhere on the 12", though, from the Drexciya style Motor City electro of closer "Cloak and Dagger" to the bustling, stab-heavy electro/analogue techno fusion of clattering, funk-fuelled lead cut "Bambam".

Cat: TRESOR 288. Rel: 23 Nov 16
  1. Shadow Boat (8:17)
  2. Bay Rouge (4:47)
  3. Harbor Chart (4:51)
Review: Tresor really are a special label. Almost thirty years in the business, and still dominating like no other imprint on the techno scene. This is because they have the power to bring in the very best of artists, with this latest re-appearance from Porter Ricks being one of the many examples of their timeless qualities. The Berlin duo made their name thanks to a succession of incredible releases for Chain Reaction, a Basic Channel sub-label that brought the experimental dub frame to the techno sphere; the project has always been a favourite of ours, and it's so pleasing to hear them doing what they do best. "Shadow Boat" is classic Porter Ricks, a glitchy, intricate dub-techno monster whose 4/4 beat is hidden among the myriad of sonics and harmonics bundled into a tight roll, and the same goes for "Bay Rouge" and its slower, more placid cascade of heartical melodies. "Harbour Chart" is the final call, a downtempo beauty that makes all other ambient seem sterile and lifeless. This is so highly recommended...

  1. Isolated Loop (6:08)
  2. Tension Arm (8:26)
  3. Idle Roller (6:31)
  4. Sum Tolerance (6:38)
Review: Lisbon based Brit Mike Jefford returns for the fifth edition of his In Silent Series, where he presents some more of his bleak and monochrome techno derivatives. Positive Centre takes the exploration of sound reproduction and audio collage into rhythmic/hypnotic spirals of reverberated walls of sound - emphasising subtle changes in repetition with low frequency sound. Hell awaits on the pitch black industrial noise terror of "Tension Arm", before he brings you down to even lower depths on the slow burning haunter "Idle Roller". While Jefford's contorted style of techno exists at varying BPMs as on display here, B side offering "Sum Tolerance" ventures into a grey area - incorporating dub, half time drum 'n' bass and drone into an unholy mixture.

  2. Nuestra Planeta (6:18)
  3. Year Zero (9T9T remix) (4:55)
  4. Nuestra Planeta (9T9T remix) (6:51)
Review: Year Zero" is a first release on Post Scriptum's own label and in a sense it is a manifesto defining it's musical identity. No space here for a sound targeting the current techno mainstream. There is dirt, and the pinch of imperfections, very characteristic of avant-garde electronics and industrial well known for the quite nearby past. On the A side, there are compositions appearing like shutters from experiments conducted in the secret laboratory. The rhythm is giving the appropriate weight, while the rest is a musical conglomerate of sounds and synthesis building up a feeling of anxiety. A swarming energy, a modulation, an uncertainty and lurking somewhere danger are surrounding us.On the flip side are remixes constituting the lighter counterpunch. Motor eurhythmics bringing to life the old good Detroit techno definitely of a dance-floor character, making this material ideal for an interesting set.

  3. Celestial Bodies (5:06)
  4. Helix (5:36)
Review: Based out of the Basque capital of Vitoria-Gasteiz in Spain, Kike Pravda's Sensoid returns with the label head honcho bringing forth his imprint's fifth transmission. Following up great remixes by legends like Oscar Mulero and Ben Sims, it's fellow Spaniard P.E.A.R.L. of Falling Ethics getting onboard this time around to deliver a tunneling and hypnotic rework of "Pressure". We're particularly loving the rather Mike Parker sounding "Celestial Bodies" which is an extremely cerebral offering, and "Helix", where Pravda builds tension in a subtle format while hammering the message home in impressive fashion.

  1. Can't Stop Shaking
  2. Dormant
Review: It's as if throughout the production process and mastering session of Profligate's Can't Stop Shaking EP faulty connections and loose wiring were intended to give the two tracks a distinctly broken timbre. The title track, infected with a T.V-static buzz, marches with the most basic, but effective, industrial back beat drums, while classic New York electro synths offer a "Can't Stop Shaking" its melody. "Dormant" on the other hand is more frenetic in its arrangement, as megaphone vocals treated to a band-pass filter are embedded into a gauzy crowd of harsh textures and arpeggiated chords that ebb and flow between the despondent and uplifting.

  4. Side Effects Of Living
Review: There's a tongue in cheek sensibility and an air of confrontation to much that James Donadio does as Prostitutes which made him more than suited to Powell's Diagonal label when the Cleveland artist debuted on the label last year. It's nice to see Donadio back with the Simple Minds-riffing Ecstasy, Crashing Beats & Fantasy and contributing one of the final Diagonal records of 2014, a year that's been most successful for both artist and label. Donadio has said in interviews Powell tries to encourage him to take a more explicit approach to the dancefloor and that's evident on this quartet of Prostitutes tracks. The curdling acid of "Dollars To DMs" and the faltering bleep electro of "Side Effects Of Living" are particularly potent Prostitutes productions!

  1. Born Wanderer (4:49)
  2. Jah Elegant (4:45)
  3. Errant Seagull (5:17)
  4. Shroud Of Cellophane (3:18)
Review: Cleveland scene stalwart James Donadio returns under the Prostitutes moniker, after a slew of post-punk reinterpretations for the likes of Diagonal, Spectrum Spools and Opal Tapes. This will be his second outing on Night School, the Glasgow-based label run by Michael Kasparis. On Aluminium Garage, the Stabudown head honcho presents "Born Wanderer" which has a twisted 'Madchester' kind of vibe about it, while "Jah Elegant" goes for a frenetic style of drill & bass that would make fans of early Warp and Rephlex releases dizzy with excitement. The flipside offers even more variety, in the form of "Errant Seagull" a lo-fi, old school house jam drowned in saturation (sounds like a fat cat trapped in a box), while some industrial strength gabber antics await you on the austere "Shroud Of Cellophane".

  3. Apart (5:46)
  4. Surrender (5:18)
Review: It's about time that Spain's Psyk made a return to the Mote-Evolver imprint; after all, he has been at the core of the label's development since their glory days back in the mid 00's. As expected, the gifted techno producer touches down with an absurdly effective collection of killers, first storming down with the hypnotics of "Disorder", before heading into a relentless wormhole on "Silent Witness". "Apart" opens the B-side with a rattling cascade of metallic percussion, driven forwards by acidic synths, and "Surrender" wastes no time in throwing us back into the midst of the rave, as cavernous and foreboding as humanly possible.

Review: New Sydney-based label Deep Seeded has a clear mission to subvert conventions about club music, and new signing ptwiggs is right in there with the kind of otherworldly grime weirdness that you might find around the likes of Visionist, Rabit and other such sonic tinkerers. There's plenty of brutality at work on "Day Of Wrath", while "Exuviae" aims for something airier while getting sideswiped by distortion and trance leads. There are calmer moments, but it doesn't take long for intense levels of sound design, sampling and raucous processing to shake up the situation.

Review: Publicist is longtime producer/performer/musician Sebastian Thomson. His tracks approach house music from a darker angle, adding processed vocals and noise to a raw foundation that also takes cues from New Beat, acid house, and Detroit techno.
When performing live Publicist sequences the synths and not the drums, preferring to play an electronically treated drum kit in the middle of the dance floor. This adds an element of sweat, excitement and virtuosity not found in most electronic producer's live performances.
Sebastian Thomson is also known as a founding member of post rock pioneers Trans Am and as the drummer of heavy metal innovators Baroness.
Living in Brooklyn by way of Buenos Aires, Washington DC and London, Publicist has spent the last four years touring Europe extensively.
