  1. Revenge For Nothing (8:38)
  2. Red Dogon Star (7:34)
Review: We were somewhat surprised to discover that Revenge For Nothing is Marcellus Pittman's first 12" single for nearly three years. We were even more surprised when we heard the title track, a fantastically druggy, drum machine-heavy concoction that sounds like a long lost collaboration between the early house pioneers of Chicago and their techno counterparts in Detroit. The sparse but heavyweight feel of the track is matched by the trippy, low-slung simplicity of flipside "Red Dogon Star", where a kick-drum dominated rhythm track is peppered with fuzzy, jammed-out analogue bass, Yorkshire bleeps and mind-altering electronics.

Sneak Attack (12") (1 per customer)
Cat: UNI 1003. Rel: 22 Feb 16
  1. Sneak Attack (10:14)
  2. Random Acts Of Insanity (8:19)
Review: Amid whispers of a new album from Unirhythm boss and Three Chairs stalwart Marcellus Pittman, two tracks from his excellent debut LP Pieces finally get committed to wax. It's a shame Pieces never got a vinyl release, but the chance to grip "Sneak Attack" and "Random Acts Of Insanity" on 12" should not be passed up. This 12" was actually released in 'blink and you'll miss it' white label format in 2014, but finally gets a proper issue! For those that don't have the LP, "Sneak Attack" is a curious concoction, with Syclops style electronics occasionally flowering over deep, dusty, intricately programmed rhythms. "Random Acts Of Insanity" feels a little bolder in approach, though its' rich chords and odd, off-kilter rhythm track are contrasted with some notably bonkers electronic touches.

  1. Monster (Robert Babicz variation)
  2. Monster (Alex Bau remix)
  3. Monster (original mix)
Review: A small, tiny 10" discovered in the universe of electronic music back in 1995 turned the definition of the world-famous and very techno purist Harthouse label upside down: "Monster" was and still is different to techno, different to electro and different to pop. At the same time it's all of this. Nowadays maybe even more contemporary mind food than 10 years before, this track creeps around the dancefloor straight into your ear and doesn't even think about leaving. A real masterpiece, some might hate it, but most love it for sure, this song will delight people all around the world in clubs of all kinds. In addition Robert Babicz aka Rob Acid aka Sontec and Alex Bau take care of pushing the theme even more towards the future with two slammin' remixes. So here we go again with a real jewel of electronic music.

  1. Dungeon (O Phase remix) (8:12)
  2. The Gated (Ben Sims edit) (6:26)
  3. Dungeon (PAS 1997 original) (6:24)
Review: More than any other UK techno producer, Luke Slater has remained at the cutting edge. This is partly due to his ability to make forward-thinking music, but as this new series demonstrates, he also possesses an uncanny knack for pairing off with other inspired artists. "Gated" is vintage PAS material from the 90s, its distorted rhythm lent a housey bias here thanks to Ben Sims' superb remix. It's hard to believe that "Dungeon", available here in its original format, dates back to 1997, as its bleepy, tunneling groove and its 'swarm of bee' hums make for exactly the kind of hypnotic sounds that many modern producers try - and fail - to emulate. Completing this excellent release is a dry, tribal version of "Dunegon" by O [Phase] from Token.

Review: UK don Luke Slater returns with the fourth instalment of Deep Heet. The last edition released in 2012 on his esteemed Mote Evolver imprint is recognised by those that know as some of the most reliable techno tools in recent years: who can forget the sinister hypnotism of "Flat Tire": what a classic! You can bet there's yet more austere and ergonomic tracks for serious DJ use on offer here. Starting off with the driving and cyclical grunt of "Desert Races", then the tunnelling and trance inducing bell melody of "Life Rhythm" representing the A side. On the flip, the full throttle intergalactic charge of Random Kingdom and the dystopian minimalism of "Lazer Organical" which would make even Mike Parker stand up and notice! Slater is still without doubt one of the most singular talents in techno, respect!

Review: The Thule vaults open up once more to give us further insight into the foundations of one of the great bastions of Icelandic deep house and techno. Plastic is an early alias of Yagya, who was on searing form when he originally made the River Electric 12" back in 1999. A metallic finish gives "Brain Plasticity" it's unique appeal, while "Translated Translations Translated" heads into dubbier territory (albeit with some cheeky bitcrushing thrown in for good measure). Whichever cut you plump for, Thule have dusted down yet another gem of unique Scandinavian techno you won't want to be without.

  1. EXhale (Dixon Just A Different Mixdown version) (6:56)
  2. EXplore (Recondite remix) (5:56)
  3. EXpand (Tale Of Us remix) (7:47)
  4. EXposed (Dubfire remix) (13:03)
Review: Four tracks from last year's Plastikman album get the remix treatment with some unlikely results. Innervisions boss Dixon would not be the most obvious candidate to rework Hawtin, but his "just a different mix down version" of "Exhale" sees the German DJ deliver a rolling, acid-fried workout that veers into oceanic chords. Newcomers Recondite and Tale of Us have remixed "Explore" and Expand" respectively. The former's version is dreamy and introverted, while the latter's remix focuses on repetitive, tingling piano lines. Most surprisingly however is Dubfire's version of "Exposed". Instead of big room minimal, the former Deep Dish member drops a hypnotic, pulsing techno workout, led by spiralling acid lines and warbling low end tones.

  1. Mutant Pulse (feat Paradigm Shift) (8:39)
  2. Mutant Radio (7:32)
Review: Fresh from reworking Remake's 1992 progressive house cover of Vangelis' "Blade Runner" theme, Maceo Plex returns to the Ellum Audio imprint he co-founded with Alta in 2011. This time round, he's got company, too, with veteran Texas outfit Paradigm Shift (whose "Requisition" was featured on Plex's recent Fabric mix CD) lending a hand on title track "Mutant Pulse". It's a typically atmospheric, peak-time-friendly affair, with trippy female spoken world vocals weaving in and out of an alien techno groove and spine-tingling pads reminiscent of the Moby classic "Go". On the flipside, "Mutant Radio" is an altogether darker and more hypnotic interpretation, with spaced-out stabs and ghostly chords accompanying Plex's fuzzy, on-point grooves.

Review: Sam Smith aka Ploy is making some of the hottest techno around at the moment and, no, the dude ain't German. Bristol-schooled and full of bass dread, Ploy's tunes have taken him from Timedance to Hessle Audio, and now onto the ever-impressive Hemlock Recordings. "Unruly" dominates the A-side with its fat, inter-galactic groove filled to the brim with hollow noise and complex percussion folds, all blowing up to a stop-start rhythm; on the flipside "Garys" chucks out another dense groove of tooled-up techno wizardry, banging and dubbed-out for maximum club tear-out, whereas "Lost Hours" lingers in outer space thanks to a beatless sway made up of kinetic bleeps and aqueous sonic shapes. Killer!

The A-Side title is from the same recording session with Spanish producer P.E.A.R.L. like "Entrance" from Finitudes first release. This time the remix comes from Techno legend Karl O'Connor aka Regis who needs no further introduction. With his deep and hypnotic contribution he has truly outdone himself.

Review: LA Club Resources dip into the archives of another US house legend that has undoubtedly influenced label owner Delroy Edwards, presenting a four track EP of lost cuts from Steve Poindexter. A name immediately familiar to anyone with a modicum of Chicago house music, Poindexter recorded the four tracks on Streetfighter in his mid '90s pomp but they never saw the physical release the music merits until now. It's all quite raw and to the bone as you'd expect with the manic "Blazing Saddles", a collaborative production done with Johnny Key and Trackmaster Scott, a body jacking highlight of the record.

  4. Bileebob & Marshallito - "Gtr4"
  5. Marshallito - "Prison Diairies"
Review: After only releasing DJ Spider & Marshallito material, SubBASS004 comes as a various artist release that introduces four new characters over the five-track EP. First up is a bar-by-bar house jam by Polirican Alarm that provides all the suggestions it was made by someone that knows their way around a MPC. The same could be said about Senor Ladron's "Bomb Scare" only it's a SH101 that does all the talking this time. Billeebob supplies two tracks, the first a synth-wavy "Meanwhile", while a collaboration with label owner Marshallito, "Gtr4" sounds like a folky Pink Floyd song underlined by the most basic of drum beats: the backbeat. Marshalllito then supplies a rather wonderful solo downtempo piece in the shape of "Prison Diaries" featuring high-pitched piano keys and gospel humming.

Review: Detroit legend Terrence Dixon may have announced his retirement from music production, but we've not heard the last of him yet. This outing under his Population One pseudonym is one of a number of 12" singles of previously unheard material we can expect in coming months. A collection of vintage tracks from the vaults (the track titles giving away when they were producer), Time Will Tell sees Parker in fairly downbeat mood. Certainly, there's a mournful feel about the minor key melodies and metronomic techno rhythms of "3. 26.2013 @ 11.40pm", while "11.18.2013 @ 1.41am" seems obsessed with discordant electronics and sci-fi influenced grooves. Meanwhile, the EP's oldest moment, "2.1.2008 @ 5.48pm" is almost overwhelmingly bittersweet and sorrowful.

  5. Lost In Space (remix) (3:41)
Review: Unbeknownst to most techno heads, 1995's Hippnotic Culture is majorly responsible for the modern rise in minimalistic dance music, especially the strains adopted by labels like Minus or Perlon a decade later. Released on the ambiguous Utensil Records, this was top-shelf material from Terrence Dixon aka Population 1, who has grown and evolved both of those monikers to this day. Holland's Rush Hour, always a source of inspirational dance aesthetics, is responsible for this re-visioning of the now much coveted original issue. "Rush Hour", to which the Amsterdam store owe their name, the wayward "Warped", "Cosmic Drill", "Lovechild", and the dreary-eyed "Lost In Space" all receive a fine remixing tweak, adding to their inherent hypnotism with another fine layer of Detroit dust. Transparent vinyl.

  1. Musical Promises

  4. Encircle
Review: Earlier this year Terrence Dixon announced plans to retire from making music with immediate effect, sending shockwaves through a techno community that was still basking in some fine recent albums for Tresor and Surface Records and a clutch of 12" material. One of Dixon's final acts before coming to his decision seemingly was to record A Mind Of His Own, this EP for Metroplex and if it is indeed the final piece of production work from him, it's a fitting send off with Juan Atkins' label one of the first to usher in his work as Population One back in 1996. Opening cut "Musical Promises" is Dixon at his most enveloping, especially when the brisk percussion drops out to let the thickness of the production consume you, whilst "The Jazz Student" and "Starting Over" are as good as any of the lithe, alien techno that he committed to the Reduction cause.

Review: Terrence Dixon first donned the Population One alias for Metroplex two decades ago, and has been a semi-regular contributor to Juan Aktkins' label ever since. Detroit City At Night finds him in fine form, delivering tracks that blend traditional Motor City techno tropes - hissing hi-hats, spacey electronics, and futurist intent - with warmer keys and organ stabs. Naturally, it feels like a classic Metroplex release, with cuts such as "Going In Circles" - built around spacey melody patterns and swirling, sci-fi textures - and "Down The Lodge" ticking all the right boxes. Best of all, though, is closer "Detroit City At Night", an atmospheric combination of gritty Motor City field recordings and dark, Italo-influenced techno grooves.

Review: After a couple of fine collaborative turns with SUED's SVN on Kontra-Musik, Henrik Jonsson's renewed vigour for productions under the Porn Sword Tobacco name brings him to another respected Swedish outpost in Aniara. Magnifik Botanik is the Gothenburg's first double pack and Jonsson has used this space to conjure up five tracks that perfectly flesh out the exotic, slightly tropical flavour that infects his work. There are moments reminiscent of that excellent Shinichi Atobe LP here, whilst the aforementioned SVN appears on "Vildvuxen Galax", one of the highlights of the five tracks along with "Kristallisering" and its life affirming piano loops.
