  3. Basical (Samo DJ & Baba Stilts remix) (7:59)
  4. Ayoo (4:52)
  5. Handprints (3:52)
Review: Berlin's Klasse Recordings launched their new sublabel Klasse Wrecks last year to showcase some more adventurous styles beyond their usual endeavours and this new one by Phran certainly delivers. "Basical" starts things off in an exotic fashion with sampled monologue backed with bongo drums beneath smooth, dreamy keys. The broken overdriven kick on "Alberca" soon gives way to killer steel drums drenched in delay and a mesmerising melody. Samo DJ and Baba Stilts hand in a nice remix of "Basical" that's full of deepness too. On the flip we have "Ayoo" with its snarling, overdriven bassline and hissing metallic hi-hats getting all in your face, while "Handprints" gets deep again with its persisting harpsichord assisting a throbbing groove that brings in laser zaps, looped strings and a killer bassline.

  4. We Are Phuture (Ricardo Villalobos Phutur III remix) (10:54)
  5. We Are Phuture (Ricardo Villalobos Phutur IV remix) (10:06)
Review: Here's a surprise treat: a swathe of new remixes of Phuture's early acid house vocal anthem "We Are Phuture" by Chile's Crown Prince of Techno-Wonk, Villalobos. The minimalist maestro takes the surging and life-affirming 1988 original (included to kick-off the double-pack) and pulls it in a variety of twisted new directions. All offer a brilliant balance between original elements - mostly the vocals and hand-picked portions of the pioneering Chicago trio's mind-altering TB-303 acid lines - with new rhythm tracks that variously touch on South American minimal techno, electro and bustling, drum machine-rich tech-house. Each is naturally druggy and intoxicating, with the punchy Phutur II Remix arguably offering the best option for peak-time plays.

  4. Lunch Break (5:17)
Review: American producer and DJ in Berlin Daniel Fisher has appeared everywhere from Hippos In Tanks to Liberation Technologies and even 1080p, to name but a few. His new one appears courtesy of Brooklyn based lo-fi imprint Exotic Dance, which had a stellar year in 2016 with great releases from the likes of DJ Osom aka label boss J. Albert and Person Of Interest of LIES and Future Times fame. There's some rather Arthur Russell sounding looped-up disco business on "Down Down" with its rubbery and hypnotic bassline action. Some tough rolling yet funky techno on "Group Think" which could work well on the dancefloor at Berghain - a club he plays at somewhat regularly. On the flip, he throws down some new wave junglist flavour on the rather fierce "Lunch Break" which lunges straight for the jugular. Fisher had a somewhat steady year in 2017, but still found time for remixes on the likes for Penelope and Groove Selecta.

Cat: HC 010. Rel: 05 Mar 18
  1. Vaseline Break
  2. Grater
  3. The Pressure
  4. Don't Let Me Be Lonely
Review: Daniel Fisher's Physical Therapy moniker has been a guest on some pretty strong labels, including 1080p, Hippos In Tanks, Allergy Season and a whole lot more. He first linked up with DJ Haus via the Unknown To The Unknown label back in 2015, and now he slips over to the sister label House Crime for a sweaty grip of club belters for those who like it ruff. "Vaseline Break" has a choice line in rolling amens and bleepy synths, while "Grater" takes on a straight-ahead techno march. "The Pressure" is a strange, disembodied belter with airy synths and a spacious mix, and "Don't Let Me Be Lonely" brings a little early 90s sass to the table, rounding off a wonderfully old-skool flavoured EP.

  3. Chirping (4:37)
Review: With a decade's worth of releases for the likes of Cadenza, Bass Culture and Bosconi to his name already, Alex Picone is arguably one of the techno and minimal house scene's most reliable producers. There's certainly much to enjoy about his latest EP, which marks his second outing of 2018. Check, for example, A-side "A Flock Of Hummingbirds", where deep, spacey and chiming lead lines delicately dance around slack-tuned, electro-influenced beats, funky analogue bass and glitchy tech-house electronics. The fun continues on the B-side, where Picone first wraps dreamy chords around a bustling rhythm track on the hot and humid "Birds Of A Feather", before serving up some more skewed tech-funk and twittering bird noises on the atmospheric and entertaining "Chirping".

Sneak Attack (12") (1 per customer)
Cat: UNI 1003. Rel: 22 Feb 16
  1. Sneak Attack (10:14)
  2. Random Acts Of Insanity (8:19)
Review: Amid whispers of a new album from Unirhythm boss and Three Chairs stalwart Marcellus Pittman, two tracks from his excellent debut LP Pieces finally get committed to wax. It's a shame Pieces never got a vinyl release, but the chance to grip "Sneak Attack" and "Random Acts Of Insanity" on 12" should not be passed up. This 12" was actually released in 'blink and you'll miss it' white label format in 2014, but finally gets a proper issue! For those that don't have the LP, "Sneak Attack" is a curious concoction, with Syclops style electronics occasionally flowering over deep, dusty, intricately programmed rhythms. "Random Acts Of Insanity" feels a little bolder in approach, though its' rich chords and odd, off-kilter rhythm track are contrasted with some notably bonkers electronic touches.

  1. Revenge For Nothing (8:38)
  2. Red Dogon Star (7:34)
Review: We were somewhat surprised to discover that Revenge For Nothing is Marcellus Pittman's first 12" single for nearly three years. We were even more surprised when we heard the title track, a fantastically druggy, drum machine-heavy concoction that sounds like a long lost collaboration between the early house pioneers of Chicago and their techno counterparts in Detroit. The sparse but heavyweight feel of the track is matched by the trippy, low-slung simplicity of flipside "Red Dogon Star", where a kick-drum dominated rhythm track is peppered with fuzzy, jammed-out analogue bass, Yorkshire bleeps and mind-altering electronics.

  1. Monster (Robert Babicz variation)
  2. Monster (Alex Bau remix)
  3. Monster (original mix)
Review: A small, tiny 10" discovered in the universe of electronic music back in 1995 turned the definition of the world-famous and very techno purist Harthouse label upside down: "Monster" was and still is different to techno, different to electro and different to pop. At the same time it's all of this. Nowadays maybe even more contemporary mind food than 10 years before, this track creeps around the dancefloor straight into your ear and doesn't even think about leaving. A real masterpiece, some might hate it, but most love it for sure, this song will delight people all around the world in clubs of all kinds. In addition Robert Babicz aka Rob Acid aka Sontec and Alex Bau take care of pushing the theme even more towards the future with two slammin' remixes. So here we go again with a real jewel of electronic music.

  1. Dungeon (O Phase remix) (8:12)
  2. The Gated (Ben Sims edit) (6:26)
  3. Dungeon (PAS 1997 original) (6:24)
Review: More than any other UK techno producer, Luke Slater has remained at the cutting edge. This is partly due to his ability to make forward-thinking music, but as this new series demonstrates, he also possesses an uncanny knack for pairing off with other inspired artists. "Gated" is vintage PAS material from the 90s, its distorted rhythm lent a housey bias here thanks to Ben Sims' superb remix. It's hard to believe that "Dungeon", available here in its original format, dates back to 1997, as its bleepy, tunneling groove and its 'swarm of bee' hums make for exactly the kind of hypnotic sounds that many modern producers try - and fail - to emulate. Completing this excellent release is a dry, tribal version of "Dunegon" by O [Phase] from Token.

Review: Born out of the prominent London techno night with the same name, the Machine label launches in style with the Tribology compilation mixed by label and party co-founder Ben Sims, a lynchpin of the British techno scene. This first sampler from the exclusives-packed mix sees an all star cast offering up their hard-hitting wares in uncut form. Planetary Assault Systems is on searing form with "The Grinder" while Mark Broom's "The Peak" pings all kinds of raucous, discordant synth lines around the mix. Damon Wild has a more paranoid tint to his own fist-shaking banger, and Insolate rounds the record off with the stealthy, strafing tones of "Strike".

Review: The Thule vaults open up once more to give us further insight into the foundations of one of the great bastions of Icelandic deep house and techno. Plastic is an early alias of Yagya, who was on searing form when he originally made the River Electric 12" back in 1999. A metallic finish gives "Brain Plasticity" it's unique appeal, while "Translated Translations Translated" heads into dubbier territory (albeit with some cheeky bitcrushing thrown in for good measure). Whichever cut you plump for, Thule have dusted down yet another gem of unique Scandinavian techno you won't want to be without.

  4. EXposed (Dubfire remix) (13:03)
Review: Four tracks from last year's Plastikman album get the remix treatment with some unlikely results. Innervisions boss Dixon would not be the most obvious candidate to rework Hawtin, but his "just a different mix down version" of "Exhale" sees the German DJ deliver a rolling, acid-fried workout that veers into oceanic chords. Newcomers Recondite and Tale of Us have remixed "Explore" and Expand" respectively. The former's version is dreamy and introverted, while the latter's remix focuses on repetitive, tingling piano lines. Most surprisingly however is Dubfire's version of "Exposed". Instead of big room minimal, the former Deep Dish member drops a hypnotic, pulsing techno workout, led by spiralling acid lines and warbling low end tones.

  1. Conjure Dreams
  2. Conjure Floyd
Review: Ever the champion of brains and brawn in equal measure, Maceo Plex makes his debut appearance on Drumcode with this punchy beast of a single. "Conjure Dreams" features plenty of Plex signifiers, from the rounded and rowdy bassline pump to the haunting tone of the synth lines, neatly packaged in a chunky framework of big room drums. "Conjure Floyd" meanwhile burrows into more minimal territory where the tones are amelodic and the percussion takes the lead, calling to mind the restraint and tension of classic M_nus productions where so much could be said with so little.

Bristol-schooled and full of bass dread, Ploy's tunes have taken him from Timedance to Hessle Audio, and now onto the ever-impressive Hemlock Recordings. "Unruly" dominates the A-side with its fat, inter-galactic groove filled to the brim with hollow noise and complex percussion folds, all blowing up to a stop-start rhythm; on the flipside "Garys" chucks out another dense groove of tooled-up techno wizardry, banging and dubbed-out for maximum club tear-out, whereas "Lost Hours" lingers in outer space thanks to a beatless sway made up of kinetic bleeps and aqueous sonic shapes. Killer!
