The Parris Remixes (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: AM 006. Rel: 20 Dec 16
  1. South East Of The Mountain (Sam Kidel remix) (4:37)
  2. Skeletal (Osvmvsm remix) (3:25)
  3. Bloom (Helm remix) (6:38)
Review: Berceuse Heroique's Ancient Monarchy adds to the Parris story with three beautiful remixes that add and enhance the mysterious London artist's unique vibe all the more. Sam Kidel condenses the vast spacious valleys on "South Side Of The Mountain" with more of a rolling, hardened feel to the drums. Osvmvsm, meanwhile, pays respect to the kick-free "Skeletal" but turbo charges the glock melody with much more of a militant focus and energy. Finally Helm strips "Bloom" right back to its key atmosphere then rebuilds with an ambient, heavily textured and sensory experience.

  2. Caseer - "Intergalactic Suburb Area" (6:10)
  3. Transonic Flow - "Reality Desintegrates" (7:00)
  4. Diffuse Arc - "Ocean" (5:25)
Review: It is a brazenly retro affair that inaugurates new Parisian imprint Into Laniakea. The imprint is run by one Raphael Cesario aka Caseer: who previously headed up the label Unlearn which presented works over the last few years by Chris Mitchell and Walt J among others. 160 Mega Parsec is a lovely four tracker that adheres to the aforementioned aesthetic of dusty/lo-fi and classic sounds. Taking his cues from the timeless Windy City groove of the legendary Mr Fingers is Torino's passEnger, on the first side. Much like his EP for Tabernacle in 2015, "Imperfect Tense" is yet another sublime journey through analogue dreams. On the flip, strap yourself in for some breakneck, Drexciyan-electro shenanigans courtesy of Transonic Flow on "Reality Desintegrates" while Oscar Rodriguez returns as Diffuse Arc on the deep VHS styled memoir "Oceans".

  2. Feel Your Body (7:13)
  3. German Friendship (4:45)
  4. Alternate Mindset (7:11)
  5. Upper Peninsula (feat Terekke) (6:11)
Review: Max Ravitz, aka Patricia states that 'the synthesizer is designed to theoretically reproduce any imaginable structure of sound' and that he was always more interested in sound design than being able to play well and that 'the synthesizer allows for a slow and thoughtful approach towards crafting sound.' He allows his machines to speak for themselves: 'I occupy the role of a composer or conductor, in a sense, determining how the music sounds while employing my various instruments as the players.' For the third and final installment of his new album Several Shades Of The Same Color, be prepared for yet more raw and gothic techno/house/EBM derivatives. From the darkly soulful early '90's techno of "You Never Listen", to the very K. Alexi sounding acid house groove of "Feel Your Body" or the slow burning "German Friendship" which sounds like a D.A.F. record on -8. But he saves the best for last on what is probably the album's finest moment of all: his collaboration with lo-fi house hero Terekke on the dreamy and evocative deep house jam "Upper Peninsula".

  3. Speed Wagon Night Bride (5:12)
  4. The Words Are Just Sounds (6:17)
  5. It Gets Worse At Night (8:05)
Review: Max Ravitz, aka Patricia allows his machines to speak for themselves, occupying the role of a composer or conductor. Several Shades Of The Same Color follows up two bold bodies of work for Opal Tapes previously and is his first album for Spectral Sound: produced in conjunction with his own label Active Cultures. Each of the three LPs feature suites of tracks that comprise their own distinct, unique worlds. Disc One opens with "I Know The Face, But Not The Name," which utilises classic electro rhythms while "The Words Are Only Sounds" is a haunting affair for synthesizer and voice. On the flip, "It Gets Worse At Night" is the EP's finest moment on this dark acid stomper which again sees Ravitz conjure the ghosts from those analogue machines. The album is not intended to generate ideas as such, rather, its goal is to produce physical sensations in the listener.

Autotomy (limited 180 gram etched vinyl 12")
Cat: SHP 56. Rel: 26 Sep 17
  1. Learned Behaviour (6:16)
  2. Dimished Feeling (4:57)
  3. Looking Outside (4:14)
Review: Chicago born, Brooklyn based producer Max Ravitz is quite known for his dusty goth(am) house and techno experiments; easily recognised by their brazenly compressed/saturated analogue aesthetic that sound like live jams. It's more of the same on his new offering: A side cut "Learned Behaviour" is the most 'straight-ahead' we've ever heard Ravitz with this tunnelling, hypnotic and absolutely heads down affair that soon evolves via some classic house chord progressions and mad 909 snare theatrics. The bittersweet and melancholic "Diminished Feeling" is more typical of his earlier style on such heralded EPs like his Opal Tapes debut Body Issues: the sound of a lonely Bushwick loft space on a Friday night. The lush and atmospheric "Looking Outside" provides a welcome ambient moment for this fine EP. Yet more fantastic work from him this year, following up the three part epic Several Shades of The Same Color on Ghostly International.

Review: Electronic pop act Penelope are the second release on fellow Swede Pjotr's label. The band offers up three 'dystopian pop songs' spanning from the futuristic, villainous R&B of "What I Gotta Do" to the trance-filled breakbeat of "Rattlesnake". Saarbrucken's finest Roger 23 delivers two versions of the title track; the "Under Influence Of Red Nasty Nyponsoppa Disco mix" is a dark and strobed-out epic while the second (Controversy Turning dirty Super dub) is jacking analogue house that would make even Jamal Moss or John Heckle stand up and notice. The killer EP closes out with a droning hypnotic techno version of "Rattlesnake" (Physical Therapy Watersports On Hard Surfaces Only mix).

  4. Raw Ambassador - "Attack, Attack!" (5:49)
Review: New Italian label Hiroshima 45 Chernobyl 86 Windows 95 present Pubblicazione 001. Starting off on the A side is Penelope's Fiance from Thessaloniki, who serves up a lo-fi and coldwave perspective of the Boards Of Canada on "Run & Gun", while Italians Rawmance and Security team up on the slo-mo EBM mutation of "Un Bon Flic" - bringing you the sound of latter's Knick Knack Yoda burger club in Rome. On the flip, Mannequin boss Alessandro Adriani gives us the gnarly 303 acid epic "Do Not Deliver Me Into The Enemy's Hands" and Raw Ambassador aka Antonio Barbetta gives us the early industrial sounds of "Attack, Attack!" with its rusty aesthetic calling to mind the classics of Portion Control or Skinny Puppy.

  1. GBBVT1337152 (Len Faki Hardspace mix) (6:55)
  2. UK74R1409047 (Len Faki Deepspace mix) (4:35)
Review: Len Faki's LF RMX is a musical platform and a non-profit project at the same time. where he will release edits and remixes of tracks that were originally intended for his DJ sets. In Strassenkinder e.V. he's found an organization dedicated to helping children who live on the streets - and his new edits label found the right partner. The project was founded in 2000 and since then became a facility for Berlin kids in need. For the label's fourth edition he taps Finnish bleep techno hero Aleksi Perala, who in turn gets Faki's respectful edit skills onto them. Starting of with the cerebral and reduced A side cut "GBBVT1337152" (Len Faki Hardspace mix) which is really hypnotic in a Sahko or early Sleeparchive style. On the flip, we have a more energised and high octane stomper in the form of "UK74R1409047" (Len Faki Deepspace mix) which you could really imagine the man playing at one of his acclaimed residencies at Berlin's Berghain.

  1. Kareem - "Just When You Thought It Was Over"
  2. Perc - "Volley"
Review: Ali Wells's Perc Trax has done incredibly well over the years, and in fact, this latest EP (the third in the series) marks the label's ten year anniversary! Patrick Sottrop aka Kareem drops "Just When You Thought It Was Over" on the A-side, unleashing a militant and subtly dubbed-out warhead for the peak time hours, while Wells himself touches down as Perc with the stormy, wide-eyed sound sculpture that is "Volley". Surprisingly, the kick drum - a menacing pound to the head - only pops up well into the track, leaving space for all other sorts of atmospherics and distortion to surface. Excellent, as per usual.

  1. Igneous (5:47)
  2. Breezeblock (6:00)
  3. Flooring (5:57)
Review: Vicious, tooled-up techno slayings from Per and Randomer - drop everything and down that last sip of Red Stripe, this is come cold shit! The pair team up across two tracks for the former's Perc Trax label, and "Igneous" is in no mood to mess around right form the start; intricate, sliding folds of drums bang away amid a gnarly, distorted ocean of cyber-sonics in the same style as Blawan and Pariah's Sheworks output. On the B-side, "Breezeblock" dishes out more UK techno gear, except that here the groove is guided by a killer set of breaks in what is perhaps the best tune of the EP; "Flooring" doesn't exactly mess around either, though, and its menacing techno pounce's sole objective is total dance floor domination. BIG!

  2. Sawf - "Goves"
  3. Truss - "Brockweir"
  4. Drvg Cvltvre - "(I Don't Want To Die In) James Franco's House"
Review: Hard-wired techno label Perc Trax has stretched their 10th anniversary celebrations out for almost a year, with parties and an incendiary Boiler Room appearance supplementing a double-disc compilation and a trio of vinyl samplers. This second sampler 12" features four more cuts from the Slowly Expanding collection. Perc kicks things off himself with "Hyperlink", a typically no-nonsense sprint through techno's more robust pastures. Sawf's "Goves" is a killer, rave-era loop techno jacker, while Truss's "Brockweir" comes on like the soundtrack to a bloody alien invasion. Finally, Drvg Cvltvre simmers things down - a little, at least - by dipping the tempo and lacing his contribution - the brilliantly titled "(I Want To Die At) James Franco's House" with the unmistakably ragged sound of a Roland TB-303.

Review: Dark Entries know their stuff when it comes to '80s synth pop reissues, and this latest reissue of Carlos Peron's Dirty Songs single is a sign of just how deep into the crates these guys get. Originally out over thirty years ago, these instrumentals are still total killers and will go down a storm in most DJ sets which venture out of the 4/4 formula. "Nothing Is True; Everything Is Permitted" and "Breakin' Indistortion" are particularly fresh and must have truly cut the edge back then: metallic drum machine beats and sparse melodies ring away into the cavernous ambience created by Peron. Wonderful and highly recommended.

Review: 18 months after Perseus Traxx brought Flight Recorder his first E.P, dedicated to four of the nine Muses of ancient Greece, the label now ushers in the second instalment dedicated to four more Muses, on Goddesses Of Inspiration II. The feel is the same as before with jagged cutting tones jammed live then edited down. Heavy synths and scattered drums perform an ode characterising the appropriate Muses, as tangled wires and a pair of hands wrench the overload of inspiration they give from basic machines. Once again Perseus' release on Flight Recorder is a unique set of acid-free sonic experiments, that sometimes feel as cold and edgy, as they do warm and carefree.

  1. A New Mystery

  4. The Map Is Not The Territory
Review: Following sterling entries from Derek Carr, John Shima and Mihail P, Distant Worlds reaches out to Perseus Traxx for a demonstration of the emotional heft and utopian optimism that classic techno promises in its most compelling moments. This is relatable, familiar territory, but executed with finesse beyond the reach of the average producer. "A New Mystery" is bathed in swirling synth tones as elegant as they are moving, while "Simulacra" places a bold square wave riff front and centre for an impactful deep techno meditation. "Circumstantial" reframes the same rich melodic approach in a frantic chassis of snapping beats darting around the grid with playful glee, and then "The Map Is Not The Territory" applies the same logic to a mystical but rhythmically charged trip into the netherworld of machine soul.

Review: Prolific analogue explorer Perseus Traxx is on top form on this fifth and final 12" of 2017. It marks his first appearance on Holland's Pareidolia Recordings and contains a quartet of cuts that brilliantly blur the boundaries between electro, techno and early Chicago house. We've particularly been enjoying the foreboding, minor key melodies, ragged machine percussion, fizzing acid flashes and mud-caked lo-fi production of opener "Atlantis", though mazy acid-electro jam "Electric Duo" and meandering jack-track "When I Think Of You" - all Adonis beats, tumbling synthesizer melodies and acid bass - are equally as impressive. If you get time, check "Offerings To Herne", too - while the melodies are poignant and alluring, the track's other elements are tough and foreboding.
