  4. Hvidding (Octal Industries remix)
Review: The resurgence of Icelandic techno continues with the latest release on AE Recordings, seeing Bjarnar Jonsson returning to his long standing Ohm project alongside emergent talent Kvadrant. The pair were last seen on Kvadarant's Kontakt label, and their production partnership is clearly still yielding quality, dubbed out techno in the finest Scandinavian tradition. Even if all the tracks are built with a steely techno focus to them, the synth work and sound design scattered throughout the tracks elevates this to a higher level, not least on the bubbling geisers of signal processing that course through the middle of "Grip".

  1. Bardo (7:15)
  2. Under Influence (6:46)
  3. Rider (6:07)
  4. Flow Machine (6:51)
Review: Riding high on the renewed energy within the Icelandic techno scene, Ohm and Octal Industries make their first appearance on Solid Groove with some truly spellbinding exercises in patience, restraint and soul-stirring composition. "Bardo" is a truly haunting piece with the most delicately balanced rhythms and stunning deployment of piano and what sounds like clarinet. "Under Influence" is a more snarling affair, but the same sense of control grips the track as it ploughs its furrow. "Rider" is a looser affair that piles a lot more detail into the frequency range, with some particularly delightful lead warbles and other high frequency matter to delight the mind. "Flow Machine" strikes a note somewhere in the middle, keeping things moody but open compared to the foggy A side.

Pebble Beach (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: EBT 001. Rel: 04 Jun 18
  1. Creek (9:31)
  2. Colours (9:36)
  3. Reef I & II (10:26)
Review: OK EG appears from out of nowhere in a haze of the mellowest ambient techno and downtempo delights for your mind to melt into. "Creek" is a smooth but strident route in, the tidal lilt of the pads dissected by a finely paced beat loop that should find a comfortable home amongst deepest house heads. "Colours" does away with the drums and uses a plaintive sprinkling of keys and delays to create an evocative backdrop for fragile females vocals. "Reef I & II" is the clubbier cut, rolling out over the B side with a looming monosynth bassline and some dub techno inflections making it a smart choice for warm up scenarios especially.

Cat: FS 033. Rel: 31 Oct 16
  1. Don't Take Me (6:10)
  2. Wild (5:45)
  3. Breate (6:15)
Review: It's not often that you get to see Alan Oldham stepping out under his own name. The legendary Detroit artist is more commonly spotted as DJ T-1000 (or designing iconic artwork for techno labels) but this time around he's sharing some more house-minded delights for Finale Sessions. "Don't Take Me" is a haunting, mystical slice of deep house that fits into the Finale narrative perfectly, while "Wild" too offers up a distinctive approach that manages to be both refined and yet imbued with that Detroit roughness. "Breathe" may well be the best jam on the record, dealing in subtle threads of melody that conjure up the perfect dubby 4/4 confection.

  2. Deadbeat - "Woah!"
  3. Nick Hoppner - "Track For Eb"
  4. Makam - "Girls Night"
  5. Marcel Dettmann - "Light"
Review: A second 12" sampler for Ryan Elliott's soon to drop Panorama Bar 06 mix opens with "Take It Slow", a rugged house jam of the finest order from The Oliverwho Factory and proceeds to take in cuts from former label manager Nick Hoppner, Deadbeat, Dettmann and Sushitech mainstay Makam. Individually the standard of these exclusives is remarkably high and it will be interesting to see how Elliott has slotted them all together for the free to download mix. If we had to guess, Deadbeat's superb glistening house burner "Woah" would make an appearance towards the end thanks to his high tempo, whilst Dettmann's swirling layers of ambience on "Light" feel very much like a set opener.

  3. Mundo (Omar Crashed remix - feat Nilufar Zarre) (5:58)
  4. Mundo (feat Nilufar) (4:03)
  5. Belka (4:47)
Review: The debut EP from Uruguayan-Berliner Omar Chibaro, Thanks One Thousand on Time Passages, raised a few eyebrows earlier in the year. This was primarily due to its hard-to-pigeonhole sound, which seemingly utilized stylistic elements from classic techno, IDM, minimal and breakbeat hardcore. This speedy follow-up on Cabaret Recordings is similarly fluid and far-sighted in tone. It contains a brilliant fusion of loose-limbed jazz breaks and early Warp style "bleeps and bass" (the fantastic "Damenongiveme"), a rolling but spacey chunk of early Black Dog-influenced techno-funk ("Psygan"), a couple of slabs of moody electro and the quirky, Luke Vibert-ish IDM quirkiness of closer "Omar Belka". In other words, it's a pretty tidy EP.

  1. Triangulum Australe (Say It Space)
  2. Mayall II
Review: FXHE has been brimming with activity in recent times, with a steadfast flurry of singles refusing to let the quality drop, and now the big bossman delivers another two slices of finely cured business in his inimitable style. The lead track is an arresting piece with just a kick to drive proceedings, leaving ample room for a haunting array of bleeps and a 'speak & spell' vocal until the track slowly ramps up with some more prominent drum programming. "Mayall II" on the flip is a less tense affair, with a cheery string refrain and old school jack-in-the-box beats disseminated in a plain and simple fashion.

  3. U Heard What Da Man Said Muthafukka!!
  4. Nelson County
Review: Despite having already released a 16 track album this year, Detroit's finest, Omar S, proves that there is quite simply nothing stopping him as he issues the four track Nelson County. "Don't Let Dis Be HapNin! Comes on like the classic "Psychotic Photosynthesis" at witnessed through a haze of smoked glass, while "U Heard What Da Man Said Muthafukka!!" is something much more driving, like taking a spin on Detroit's streets after dark in a souped up Dodge Charger, before "Nelson County" sees the tough house-focused denouement take place in a dingy backstreet club. As always with Omar S, this stuff doesn't mess about....

  1. Blown Valvetrane (11:12)
  2. Busaru Beats (4:40)
  3. Deep Valve Cover (6:38)
Review: The more Omar S material we get onto our shelves, the better off we all are. We love him, as you probably well know. The Detroit misfit has this knack for making simple house and techno sound rich and full of soul. That's not to say that he can't lay down some roughness and, in fact, that's exactly what we love about him. This EP, in particular, is one we've been wanting for a while' it's Alex O Smith at his damn best the whole way through, providing the dirt and the shine simultaneously. "Blown Valvetrane" is an absolute beat of an EP, a classic Detroit killer with an FX-drenched percussion, a simple drum machine groove and a whole heap of supreme nastiness - an absolute winner! "Busaru Beats" is a murky, distorted monster that lays in the shadows of its more aggressive A-side sibling, and "Deep Valve Cover" provides that classic Omar S hit; a joint that'll blow your mind with its utter simplicity and shady demeanour. SICK and BACK IN.

  1. Income Tax Refund Dance
  2. The White Castle Song
  3. Untitled (feat Patrik Sjeren)
  4. 3c 273
Review: FXHE maintain their monthly heat emission for 2012, with label boss Omar S displaying all aspects of his production prowess (as well as skill for a humorous track titles) across four productions - one of which features the button bashing assistance of one Patrik Sjeren. There's something icily brilliant about the restrained "Income Tax Refund Dance" melding a dark piano riff with snapping 808 kicks and rippling lo fi rhythms which only further justifies the title of Omar S's killer 2011 LP. It's complemented by the far rowdier box jam "The White Castle Song" which jackhammers a simple yet highly flammable key riff over low rent percussion for FXHE's most potent ode to the perfect warehouse moment since the all conquering "Here's Your Trance..." Given the lack of additional info, we presume the Patrik Sjeren that produces the B Side "Untitled" track is the same Patrik Sjeren that released in the mid 90s under a multiplicity of aliases, and his contribution is every bit as incendiary as the track preceding it, whilst "3c 273" sees Omar S slip into pensive utopian electro mode with aplomb.

Review: Announcing the 25 year anniversary vinyl only edition of the legendary Mihon. It apparently all happened back in Frankfurt, 1992 when Uwe Schmidt aka Atom Heart teamed up with other local legends such as Ata Macias (Robert Johnson) and Heiko MSO (aka Heiko Schafer of Playhouse) and local hard techno purveyor W.J. Henze as Ongaku to produce one of techno's holy grails. Especially "Mihon 3" which is known by many as one the best acid tracks that was ever produced.
