  1. Theodor Nymark - "Mayall's Object" (7:56)
  2. Resonant Pole - "Morket" (6:01)
  3. ANTN - "Wet Black Nose" (5:47)
Review: While we know relatively little about Denmark's TRTLNCK label, the boutique label impressed us with their first outing from last year. They're now back with yet more of their native crew, and we can easily see this becoming an interesting little emporium for outsider house and techno in the future. Theodor Nymark starts off with the raw, analogic bleeps and mechanical sway of "Mayall's Object", guided by an excellent percussive swing. The flipside sees Resonant Pole deliver a bruising concoction of techno stabs with "Morket", while ANTN's "Wet Black Noise" delivers the most incorrigible moment on this tidy 12", in the form of a mussy, bass-heavy techno snowball. TIP!

O aka PHASE
Cat: TOKEN 85. Rel: 15 Aug 18
  1. Suspended Animation (Stroke B) (4:25)
  2. Suspended Animation (Stroke C) (4:29)
Review: Phase presents two striking, no-nonsense techno cuts for TOKEN85. Each side of Suspended Animation delivers the special kind of face melter that manages to remain sincere without being overly self-serious. Stroke B favours the sensational approach, with a bright and playful lead playing against a hi-hat frenzy in the breakdown. Stroke C is more introverted on surface level, but offers pure chaos instead from its depth.

  2. Supply/Demand (6:47)
  3. Human Waste (5:23)
  4. Wage Slave (6:23)
  5. Poverty Line (5:09)
Review: Since three years have now passed since Rich Oddie and Dave Foster debuted their O/H project on Opal Tapes, this EP is long overdue. As with their previous excursion, "Market Values" is breathlessly intense, offering a toxic, wild and angry fusion of lo-fi techno rhythms, punk attitude and what Ron Morelli has described as "scum electronics". Opener "Media Blitz", for example, is like a slap in the face with an iron anvil, while the more atmospheric "Supply/Demand" is notable not only for its hypnotic, arpeggio-driven rhythm section, but also the "screw capitalism" vibe of its growling spoken word vocal. Elsewhere, "Human Waste" takes lo-fi industrial electro to all new levels of fuzziness, while trippy and dimly lit closer "Poverty Line" could well be the best of the bunch.

Frankfurt Bass (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: ORKLW 01. Rel: 28 Mar 18
  1. Park Jit (5:12)
  2. The Message (3:54)
  3. Frankfurt Tek (3:43)
Review: An ode to their fair city in the state of Hesse here by homeboys Die Orakel and their local hero Orson Wells. Referencing the classic Motor City sounds of electro and ghetto-tech on this fine EP. "Park Jit" and its sleazy electro-funk takes it cues from the early Databass sound, while the breakneck dystopianism of "The Message" goes for more of a Dopplereffekt vibe. Bringing the funk and emotive feel on the B side we have "Frankfurt Tek" a saturated lo-fi memory recording (direct to VHS) that would make even local legend Anthony Rother proud. But hey wait, he's from Offenbach anyway! This is Lennard Poschmann's second recording for the Frankfurt based imprint which has had previous releases by Christopher Rau, Pablo Mateo and Koehler.

  5. Full Spectrum (Juniper dub) (7:46)
Review: When he made his debut on Nous Disques last year, there was much discussion about whether O Xander - AKA DJ Rei Ayanami - was actually from Antarctica, as his sparse Soundcloud profile claimed. Either way, he's decided to roll with the theme on this fine follow-up, From Antarctica With Love. The EP's five tracks variously touch on icy electro ("Snowspeeder Blues"), windswept acid ("Thru Our Veins"), glacial electronica ("A Perfect Balance"), and clanking, mechanical techno (the deep but metallic "Full Spectrum"). The latter track is also featured in Juniper Dub form, with the Smallville and meandyou duo excelling at combining cut-up melody snippets with rolling, drum machine rhythms.

  1. Sullric (10:05)
  2. Sullric (Deeper dub) (12:09)
Review: In what is surely an unexpected collaboration in the field of house and techno, Mosaic mastermind Steve O'Sullivan teams up with Ricardo Villalobos for a hypnotic trip through minimal landscapes that plays to both of their strengths. The rock-solid rhythm of "Sullric" surely belongs to O'Sullivan while the rich, subtle layers of samples, tones and other such sonic decorations come straight from the Villalobos school of production. The two mixes on this 12" only have minor differences - whichever side you drop things will get considerably deeper than they were previously. Of such ingredients are classy, immersive techno joints made.

Review: Here's a rare treat for fans of the late, great Mika Vainio: the first ever release of a recently re-discovered soundtrack he created (both solo, as "O", and alongside Ilpo Vaisanen and Sami Salo as Pan Sonic) for Jimi Tenor's long-forgotten 1994 experimental film, "Sahko: The Movie". Fans will love it: the solo "O" material, showcased on the A side, is icy, hypnotic and often bleep-laden ambient techno of the sort Vainio excelled at earlier in his career. The Pan Sonic material on the flipside, meanwhile, is deep, droning and mind-altering electro-acoustic ambience that's up there with the very best of their work. In other words, you need this in your life.

  2. Let It Do What It Does (Omar S mix)
Review: Having recently struck out on his own, Ob Ignitt joins forces with Detroit pal Omar-S for the first time since 2012's seminal Wayne County Hill Cops Part 2 12". On the A-side, Ob offers Omar-S "My Last Reese Cup". There's little peanut butter goodness to be found, but rather a chunky, snare-heavy breakbeat house groove, spacey atmospherics and a seriously chunky bassline. On the flip, Omar-S gives his interpretation of "Let It Do What It Takes", with sweet, darting electronics and deep house textures complimenting a typically Motor City flavoured house groove. Impressively, it also boasts a surging sub bass line that sounds particularly booming on club soundsystems.

  1. Jefferson Reserve (6:47)
  2. Calm Of Night (7:31)
Review: Considering the spacey title, artwork and long-standing Detroit credentials of both Luke Hess and Omar-S collaborator Ob Ignitt, you'd expect these two tracks to be on the intergalactic side. Happily, they are. The duo kicks things off with "Jefferson Reserve", a tactile, floor-friendly chunk of energetic deep house blessed with classic electrofunk bass, deep space pads, and the kind of glistening, far-out synthesizer melodies you'd expect to hear the Cantina Band play in one of the Star Wars movies. They move further towards techno territory on flipside "Calm of Night", where warring lasers fizz between the speakers whilst progressive house-influenced chords and rhythms propel the track forwards at the speed of light.

Review: Also knows as DJ Booth and Driss Bennis, the multi-faceted OCB comes through with his new moniker on France's Rue De Plaisance imprint, Varoslav's eternally poignant household. "Megadrive", the title tune, is a rocking, breaks-led number fit for any sort of warehouse carnage, and the Quick Press edit evolves the tune deeper down the hypnotic techno wormhole. On the flip, "2K1Love" churns out a majestically deep drum machine groove with all sorts of aqueous charms, while both locked grooves at the tail-end of the EP provide some fine-ass analogue heat to burn on the dancefloor. Top notch.

  7. Bitchslap
Review: Stunningly beautiful double-pack from OCH for Autoreply Music's 20th release. Following on from output on renowned labels like PAL SL, Trelik, Bass Culture he returns to Autoreply with seven tracks of playable perfection. By focusing on stripped-back percussive grooves, sparse 909 drum-programming and ultra fine-tuned dynamics he certainly proves with tracks "Samarkand Sulci" and "Snarecrow" that the original jackin' house/techno sound will always have plenty of life and soul. "Don't Fight It" is an 8.5 minute acid builder featuring haunting vocals and crisp synths whilst the bass driven dub of "Enceladus" wouldn't be complete without live delays and distorted pianos. Check Out "Morning Glory" for a surprise contender for this years balearic soundtrack or "C Ring" for ultimate warmth. Tracks for every situation and not to be missed!

  5. Incompressible Flow (6:41)
  6. Lovers Roll (6:41)
Review: It's been a hot minute since we heard something new from Och, but he's back on Autoreply with a double 12" of high-grade, stripped back tech house shot through with oodles of imagination. "Panamax" is the consummate dubby house track, a true immersion chamber of a track, while "The Sadness" brings a shuffling groove and some peppy key stabs to the table. "The Healer" is a more overtly minimal affair that would sound at home on PAL SL, while "Linear Response Function" keeps things tight and focused with a sturdy rhythmic framework and some spartan piano notes. "Incompressible Flow" has a submerged jazzy undercurrent to it, and "Lovers Roll" gets into that freaky house bounce heard on "The Sadness". Overall, it's another sterling grip of refined tracks from a seasoned pro.

Review: The importance of this release can't be over estimated. A new concept of what a club track can be was born through the transfer of the groove away from the backing rhythm towards the sound sphere. Allied with an unique sound design this makes room for an ongoing renewal of the techno concept. Ambitioned record collections are incomplete without this 12".

Review: Originally released in 2000, Octave One's Black Water has now received the remaster treatment, taking the highly sought after first pressing of this bona fide Detroit techno anthem and giving it a boost for modern spinners to get busy with. The A side mixes "Black Water" and "Black Waters" are tough-edged bangers with that irrepressible Octave One energy, keeping the beats big and brutal and the melodies stabbing on the former and stripping down to a raw drum track for the latter. However it's the "Untold" version on the flipside that will get the crowds flipping out with its perfect string hook, rousing drums and Motor City romanticism.

Review: Bristol's finest Jules Smith aka October is back with more reduced EBM mutations following up the dusty and rusted experiments ts as heard on his great Death Drums cassette on No Corner just last year, not to mention 2015's wicked Black Body Radiation. It's the second edition of his new eponymous imprint here. On the A side we have "Repentant (version)" a grotty acid slow burner that squeals away menacingly above the seething dirt of vintage drum computers. On the flip "Judgement Dub" goes for an early Chicago vibe somewhere between Jamie Principle and K. Alexi with its haunting pads and funk bass supported by spitfire rhythm patterns and morose atmosphere that's geared for the early morning hours of a sweaty Berlin basement party.

  3. Track 3 (6:21)
Review: Following previous outings on Blind Box and Half Baked, OddMann strike out on their own with a self-titled label to carry their crafty twists on the minimal house and techno formula. There's quite a tough, old-skool finish to "Track 1" on this no-nonsense 12", tapping up the early UK techno vibe in all its swooning pads and errant bleeps. "Track 2" is more aligned with the clean lines and head-nodding grooves of European minimal, but there's still plenty of space for surreal sound design in between the drums. "Track 3" dials up the swing and gets seriously funky, keeping things stripped back to let the DJ do their thing.

Review: Following the excellent single-sided heater from Sharif Laffrey, Discos Capablanca is back in action once again with Odopt, previously only spotted on excellent Swedish label Born Free. The record opens up with the ominous, dramatic tones of "Belgrade", all searing synth swells and bloated drums working towards some cinematic apocalypse scenario. On the B-side, "Croque Trans Croque" has a cooler head but instead aims to unsettle with its off-key metal chimes atop a steady-ticking disco rhythm, and then "Rex Ingram" finishes the EP off with yet more surreal beatdowns that will send the party in a very interesting direction indeed.

Review: More lo-fi techno shenanigans from the Born Free camp. The next bunch of jams come courtesy of Russian duo Odopt, this is the second EP by the Bar Simachev (Moscow) residents for the Stockholm imprint- it follows up 2016's Sickert Art Bartel. Equal parts, EBM, coldwave and Italo can be heard on the nefarious groove of "Incident", while "Haunted Tales" heads down a much more industrial influenced route, with its pounding metallic rhythms and grinding arpeggios. The real highlight of the EP exists on the flip, in the form of "Navy Fit Republic" with its neon-lit late night bounce, that's just as dark and sleazy as you like.

Review: The resurgence of Icelandic techno continues with the latest release on AE Recordings, seeing Bjarnar Jonsson returning to his long standing Ohm project alongside emergent talent Kvadrant. The pair were last seen on Kvadarant's Kontakt label, and their production partnership is clearly still yielding quality, dubbed out techno in the finest Scandinavian tradition. Even if all the tracks are built with a steely techno focus to them, the synth work and sound design scattered throughout the tracks elevates this to a higher level, not least on the bubbling geisers of signal processing that course through the middle of "Grip".

Review: Riding high on the renewed energy within the Icelandic techno scene, Ohm and Octal Industries make their first appearance on Solid Groove with some truly spellbinding exercises in patience, restraint and soul-stirring composition. "Bardo" is a truly haunting piece with the most delicately balanced rhythms and stunning deployment of piano and what sounds like clarinet. "Under Influence" is a more snarling affair, but the same sense of control grips the track as it ploughs its furrow. "Rider" is a looser affair that piles a lot more detail into the frequency range, with some particularly delightful lead warbles and other high frequency matter to delight the mind. "Flow Machine" strikes a note somewhere in the middle, keeping things moody but open compared to the foggy A side.
