  2. Semillas (4:17)
  3. Graff Walk (5:46)
  4. The Heights (5:10)
Review: Nomadico is Dan Caballero aka the Underground Resistance affiliated DJ Dex. His new Gentefication EP is inspired by the movement of the same name in East Los Angeles that's striving to maintain the local street culture without selling out to real estate developers and hipsters. More power to 'em we say! The title track on the A side is emotive hi-tech soul: just the way we like it and sounding like his old days with Los Hermanos or Ican. The gritty B side cut "Graff Walk" was probably our favourite of the bunch. With its buzzy sub bass snarl and rusty spitfire rhythm patterns going for some proper 'street techno' style. This really is a soundtrack for 'young barrio coders, digital artists and community organizers.' as Yaxteq claim. And they'll certainly continue to honour high-tech urban innovation that goes against all expectations.

Cat: NEO 39. Rel: 08 Jan 18
  1. Memories
  2. Motor Breeze
  3. P.Fox
  4. Spring Theme
Review: The contemporary minimal and electro scene has rightly celebrated Norken project for some of the most gorgeous deep cover cuts of the 90s and early 00s, and now he's revived the project via reissues and previously unreleased material from the archives. The vibe across the EP is delicate and playful, with "Motor Breeze" in particular standing out with its meandering pitch bent lead lines. "P.Fox" is sure to be one of the most popular tracks on the EP for the selectors out there thanks to its killer subby bassline and seductive keys, but truly the whole EP is a treasure trove of thoughtful, warm and mysterious electronic goodness.

  2. Philantropy 101 (7:32)
Review: The raw jackin' antics of early Chicago merges with the sludgy new school attitude of outsider house (can you still call it that?) of the second instalment on Northern Powerhouse. It's quite fitting then to discover that the project is comprised of Alex Handley (who has been producing since the mid '90s in projects such as Primordial Soup) and accomplished producer Nigel Rogers aka Perseus Traxx. Featured on this edition is some rusty and decayed machine soul on the bouncy "Slapdash Bass" while the flip features some decent electro on the gnarly clang and clatter of "Philantropy 101"

Review: The raw jackin' antics of early Chicago merges with the sludgy new-school attitude of outsider house (can you still call it that?) on the second instalment on Northern Powerhouse. It's quite fitting then to discover that the project is comprised of Alex Handley (who has been producing since the mid '90s in projects such as Primordial Soup) and Nigel Rogers aka Perseus Traxx. The crunchy syncopated rhythms of vintage drum computers, with the chorus drenched bounce of the legendary Juno 106 bassline and classic FM pads of the most celestial kind make up the dirty magic on "House Of York". On the flip, the savage lo-fi grind of "Bell Pit" swims in a filthy analogue bubblebath of saturation and overdrive - and we loved it!

  1. White Of The Eye
  2. White Of The Eye (Silent Servant remix)
  3. Sensory Balance
Review: 'White of the Eye' is the first release under "Nothing but Blood" from Scott Fraser, a direct link back to Scott's earlier 90's work and sound around the darker realms of techno and harder-edged Chicago house. The EP title refers back to a favourite Donald Cammell film of Scott's from 88'. 'White of the Eye' on the A-side is an 11 minute extended mix of the lead cut. Silent Servant on remix duties delivers an amyl fuelled techno bomb landing somewhere in an 80's new york basement. Diving deeper on B2 it features Atlanta resident Claire Elise Tippins on vocals.

  5. Le Syndicat - "Maximalist" (Ekman remix) (6:05)
Review: Continuing their uncompromising fusions of artists new and old, Contort Yourself return with a punishing array of industrial thuggery from hardware manipulators you wouldn't take home to your mother. Novacom were last seen on Slumdiscs back in 2014 and here bring a fast and gnarly rhythmic tryst to bear before JK Flesh do their own snagging dance with oppressive synths and drums twirling into a heavyweight whole. French brutalists Le Syndicat then dominate the B-side with their confrontational bastardisation of techno and industrial, making the perfect source material for Ekman to get nasty with on his remix of "Maximalist".

Review: Not content with white and black offshoots of the main label, the perma-busy Lobster Theremin crew expand proceedings further with the arrival of a new and totally separate platform from their previous offshoots called Mork (wot no Mindy?). Keeping to Lobster Theremin's theme of "passion for championing newcomers", Dutch producer nthng is responsible for Remember Us this inaugural Mork 12" - which doubles as his debut - and adds further credence to LT's canny A&R manoeuvres. It's hard to pin down nthng stylistically with bits of Fred P thrown in along with Prince Of Denmark's earlier work on Staub. The ultra deep title track is a particular delight.

Review: Manni Dee might be best known for his upfront techno tackle on Perc Trax and the like, but he's also been quietly building up a separate identity as Nuances, and it's a world away from his dancefloor output. Following on from some choice album appearances on Bastakiya Tapes, it's up to Tabernacle to give the project its first outing on wax. While Tabernacle can have some range in their sound, this finds the label plunging wholeheartedly into ambient climes. Heavily processed textures and delicate chimes all feed into a truly evocative atmosphere loaded with significance. Ignore the familiar name behind the music - this is an album deserving attention all on its own.

  1. OK Face (4:23)

  3. Morning Loving (5:27)
  4. M_Animal (4:07)
Review: Fresh from delivering a fine album of experimental electronics for Further Records (the ambient leaning Hyperboreal), Manuel Fogliata pops up Parisian imprint Latency with a pleasingly varied four-tracker. As if to emphasize his techno roots, he begins with something big and heavy - the pulsating rhythm, fluttering deep space electronics and hypnotic dancefloor intensity of "OK Face". Fogliata further proves his techno credentials with the rather brilliant "Morning Loving", a decidedly picturesque chunk of ambient techno that's both danceable, and aesthetically pleasing. Elsewhere, he pauses for a breather via the delay-laden beauty of ambient cut "Aphrobite", and wanders into trippy modular synthesizer territory on the beat-less "M_Animal".

Cat: NUMM 06. Rel: 16 May 18
  1. Life Is A Hideout (8:29)
  2. The Magic City (6:35)
  3. Quiet Nights (5:30)
Review: Since parting company with Going Good a few years back, Nummer has successfully been self-releasing their own forthright machine music. The London-based French duo continues to impress on this first three-track salvo of 2018. Arguably the strongest cut here is A-side "Life Is A Hideout", a muddy and bass-heavy concoction built around bustling breakbeats, foreboding bass, creepy electronics and slowly blossoming synthesizer chords. The track's rhythmic looseness is matched by the dense, dystopian sound soup of "The Magic City" - an impeccably creepy affair that reminded us of mid-'80s Test Department - while "Quiet Nights" sees them successfully play around with pots-and-pans percussion, delay-laden trumpet samples and a mutant acid bassline.

Review: FireScope Records present Darren Nye, a UK producer who has been writing music since 1995. Emotional Intelligence is his first-ever vinyl release, which fully represents the label's ethos. An emotional and heartfelt work, it features influences from label heads B12 ("Things She Said") and other Sheffield or Detroit innovators. Be assured that there's proper contemporary techno with emotive Motor City vibes here, like on "Disconnected Reality" - an otherworldly ambient techno expression which will have you levitating into the cosmos. Elsewhere, there's the very deepest strains of electro in the form of "Emulated Emotion" or "Plasmid Souk" respectively.

  1. Likeminded (7:35)
  2. Intercept (5:00)
  3. Mass Relay (8:03)
  4. A Moment In Space (Piermattei edit) (3:01)
Review: Darren Jason NYE, or simply Darren NYE, is a UK rave-head through and through. The man has been involved in the larger house and techno scene since the early 90s, primarily as a DJ and promoter but has, in more recent years, released some cracking house and techno, levitated further by a conscious love for euphoria. He launches the new Polarity imprint with this white label 12", Excursions Into The Unknown, thanks to the help of two fat rum-machine tracks residing on the A-side - both killers if you're in the mood for some nasty percussion stabs! On the B-side, "Mass Relay" heads further into the deeper end of the house scale, coming through with a splendid symphony of distant synths, while "A Moment In Space" is edited by the lesser-known Piermattei, who proceeds to trim the original into vast pool of sonics and rhythm, all without a single kick-drum. Tip!

  2. Resonant Pole - "Morket" (6:01)
  3. ANTN - "Wet Black Nose" (5:47)
Review: While we know relatively little about Denmark's TRTLNCK label, the boutique label impressed us with their first outing from last year. They're now back with yet more of their native crew, and we can easily see this becoming an interesting little emporium for outsider house and techno in the future. Theodor Nymark starts off with the raw, analogic bleeps and mechanical sway of "Mayall's Object", guided by an excellent percussive swing. The flipside sees Resonant Pole deliver a bruising concoction of techno stabs with "Morket", while ANTN's "Wet Black Noise" delivers the most incorrigible moment on this tidy 12", in the form of a mussy, bass-heavy techno snowball. 1. Opening Rhyme
  2. Tape Trek
  3. Galaktik
Review: The limited, hand-stamped presentation of the Canoe releases matches the music contained within, all grainy and unusual but utterly tooled up for the club. Nyra's pet project is providing a fascinating insight into the make up of this ever emerging artist, and tracks like "Opening Rhyme" are sure to pique interest from all kinds of adventurous spinners. While the track may start in a kind of looped up deep house headspace, after the breakdown it takes an unexpected, thrilling swerve into twitchy acid. "Tape Trek" is more overt in its surreality with its layers of pitched speech getting run through the mill and splashed over a primal drum machine beat. "Galaktik" meanwhile has a touch of old skool rave about it, but it's far from an obvious throwback track. Suffice it to say, we'll have whatever Nyra's having.

  1. Park Jit (5:12)
  2. The Message (3:54)
  3. Frankfurt Tek (3:43)
Review: An ode to their fair city in the state of Hesse here by homeboys Die Orakel and their local hero Orson Wells. Referencing the classic Motor City sounds of electro and ghetto-tech on this fine EP. "Park Jit" and its sleazy electro-funk takes it cues from the early Databass sound, while the breakneck dystopianism of "The Message" goes for more of a Dopplereffekt vibe. Bringing the funk and emotive feel on the B side we have "Frankfurt Tek" a saturated lo-fi memory recording (direct to VHS) that would make even local legend Anthony Rother proud. But hey wait, he's from Offenbach anyway! This is Lennard Poschmann's second recording for the Frankfurt based imprint which has had previous releases by Christopher Rau, Pablo Mateo and Koehler.

Review: When he made his debut on Nous Disques last year, there was much discussion about whether O Xander - AKA DJ Rei Ayanami - was actually from Antarctica, as his sparse Soundcloud profile claimed. Either way, he's decided to roll with the theme on this fine follow-up, From Antarctica With Love. The EP's five tracks variously touch on icy electro ("Snowspeeder Blues"), windswept acid ("Thru Our Veins"), glacial electronica ("A Perfect Balance"), and clanking, mechanical techno (the deep but metallic "Full Spectrum"). The latter track is also featured in Juniper Dub form, with the Smallville and meandyou duo excelling at combining cut-up melody snippets with rolling, drum machine rhythms.
