Working K (12")
Cat: STOCH 002. Rel: 29 Mar 17
  1. Working K (main mix) (8:21)
  2. Working K (Work It Out mix) (4:38)
  3. Working K (Krikor edit) (5:15)
  4. Working K (SB Forgotten Sounds mix) (6:40)
Review: Despite the pastoral, park-based imagery utilized on the sleeve, Denis Morin's Working K is hardly a paragon of gentle beauty. While the main mix does make use of some picturesque elements - twinkling pianos, cascading guitar lines and birdsong - these have been heavily effected with delay and reverb, and tumble down over a restless kick drum pattern and wild electronics. The trippy Work It Out Mix begins as a field recording-heavy ambient house number, before morphing into a chunk of quirky, tropical-fired oddness midway through. Elsewhere, Krikor turns it into a lo-fi EBM throbber, while the EB Forgotten Sounds Mix teases maximum beauty from Morin's original sounds whilst ensuring a steady dancefloor pulse.

  1. Narke (4:18)
  2. Krans Av Stjarnor (7:03)
  3. Dod Orm (7:13)
  4. Vem (4:08)
Review: Swede Evigt Morker has a reputation for making the kind of timeless but occasionally dark techno that most would expect from Italian contemporaries such as Donato Dozzy. His latest 12", simply titled "4", does indeed include a moody, percussive and subtly acid-tinged moment - rolling club cut "Dod Om" - but is generally a little more poignant and melodious than previous outings. Check, for example, the bubbly ambient bliss of "Vem" or superb opener "Narke", which wraps Mr YT style chords and melodies around a dense, off-kilter techno groove. "Krans Av Stjarnor", a find combination of lilting chord progressions and laidback techno beats, is also rather good.

  3. Ill76 - "New Years Night" (7:38)
  4. Submersible Machines - "If You Know How I Feel" (6:17)
Review: As you might expect, the latest multi-artist release from Texas Underground Recordings boasts a quartet of deep techno treats from producers based in the Lone Star State. Brooks Mosher impresses with the sweet and cylical synthesizer melodies and bubbling electronic percussion of "Magic Hat", before the mighty Convextion joins the dots between melancholic techno, electro and bustling IDM on EP standout "Summer Indoors". ILL76 injects a little more forthright energy via the bumpy but angular drums and mind-altering late night riffs of "New Year's Night", while Submersible Machines head straight for the Motor City on the classic deep futurism of closer "If You Know How I Feel". Stellar stuff, all told.

Urgence (12")
Cat: OMR 010. Rel: 29 Nov 17
  1. Urgence 1 (9:37)
  2. Urgence 2 (7:19)
Review: Juju & Jordash's imprint Off Minor are back. Their tenth release follows up a great one by Downbeat boss Jose Rico. The Urgence EP features Jordash aka Jordan GCZ in collaboration with the mighty Dave Moufang aka Move D - for the first time since 2015's Live In Seattle album on Further Records. On the A side, we have the blissed out down-tempo groove of "Urgence 1" its sparse and skeletal rhythm patterns, warm bass pulsations and cosmic synth textures awash in a haze of smoke and tape saturation. It is an equally as chilled affair on the flip with "Urgence 2" but it's definitely got more groove and funk about it on this minimalist slow burner that would be perfect to use as a tool; to merge with other tracks or great on its own, or for cool down moments for its sparse and hypnotic effect. Recorded live in Amsterdam.

  1. Ripple Effect (Marc Houle remix)
  2. Ripple Effect (Noel Jackson remix)
  3. Ripple Effect (Chloe remix)
Review: The singles accompanying Mr C's celebrated return to the album format keep on coming, this time drafting in some noted names to deliver remixes of "Ripple Effect". First up is Marc Houle who employs some of his trademark creepy bass tones to underpin a purposeful, driving slice of darkside party music. Noel Jackson is equally on edge with his version, although it's a more stripped down and sped up affair that borders on electro in its sense of tightly wound urgency. Chloe gets the run of the B-side to lay down a more varied remix that uses some punchy disco elements to create a more light hearted outlook on Mr C's original jam.

Memoria/Sprayer (180 gram vinyl double 12")
Cat: LT 003. Rel: 30 Oct 17
  1. Memoria I
  2. Memoria ll
  3. Sprayer l
  4. Sprayer ll
Review: Mr Cloudy has a sizable back catalogue on labels like Entropy, Dubwax and Millions Of Moments, and now he's been snapped up by Local Traffic to impart his sumptuous dubby wares across four tracks. "Memoria I" and "Memoria II" let the A-side simmer in a bubbling broth of dub techno ambience, all shimmering chords undergoing heavyweight processing. "Sprayer I" is still immensely mellow, although a little rhythmic pulse creeps its way into earshot via the movement of the gravelly chords, and then "Sprayer II" rounds the EP off with something approaching a beat-oriented excursion through the same billowing clouds of dub techno finery.

  1. The Hunt (4:39)
  2. Ammunition (4:57)
  3. The Hunt (SW Amnesia mix) (9:40)
Review: If you were to closely scrutinize the Klasse Wrecks discography, you'd find numerous collaborations between label co-founder Mr Ho, and all manner of like-minded individuals. He's at it again here, joining forces with Florian Blauensteiner for another trip through off-kilter dancefloor pastures. Lead cut "The Hunt" is especially impressive, with the duo lacing ZX Spectrum electronics and creepy pads over a dusty, broken beat-inspired groove. This formula is retained for the more acid-influenced flipside "Ammunition", which sounds like a hook-up between Mr Oizo and IG Culture. Best of all, though, is SW's flipside Amnesia Mix of "The Hunt", in which the SUED artist turns the original into a trippy chunk of ambient house/broken beat/intelligent techno fusion.

  3. Sensorium (6:32)
  4. Hygenia (7:15)
Review: Berlin retroverts Libertine are back with their seventh edition and once again seem to have unearthed some slept on classics, this time in the form of Mr Suspicious aka Steve Law. Law is an undisputed legend of Melbourne's electronic music scene, mainly known for his trance/ techno exploits as Zen Paradox (on the local Psy-Harmonics imprint) in addition to seminal releases for the seminal Belgian imprint Nova Zembla. Mr Suspicious was only responsible for a couple of EPs between 1997 - 1998 and we can only guess that these tracks are from the same period. From the deep sonar transmissions of "Chorionic Architecture" or the steely slow-burning machine funk of "Ghost Hacker" on the A side. The flip features a couple of more straight ahead cuts: the bleepy rhythm focused DJ tool "Sensorium" and the tunnelling and euphoric stroboscopy of "Hygenia". Props to the lads at Libertine for giving more exposure to this underrated legend.

  3. Smooth Motion (5:05)
  4. Look Back Motion (5:11)
Review: DJ Nobu & NHK yx Koyxen new MTV moniker is something only The Trilogy Tapes could come up with, and it's another fine addition to the label's infamous web blog, which contains all sorts of outlandish sounds from every corner of the globe. "Snow Ball" and "Smart Ball", on the A-side, are two sides of the same coin; the former bleeps placidly to an eerie groove of molecular hypnotics, while the latter enters the rave with a slow yet brutalist assortment of bass bumps. "Smooth Motion" is a fuzzy, imperceptible techno experiment in the same style as Thomas Brinkmann's oddities, and "Look Back Motion" rattles an itchy, acid-driven stomper over a bare-bones groove that has TTT stamped all over it. That artwork, too...

Cat: GCW 13V. Rel: 28 Jan 16
  1. Karius Und Baktus (6:48)
  2. Prophet (7:43)
Review: Mudkid is a pseudonym for German producer Franklin de Costa and this is his third 10-inch release under this name for house label Greta Cottage Workshop. While he initially gained recognition during the minimal boom of the mid-00s, this release resounds to a different sound. Both tracks are robust and rolling, underpinned by tough tribal drums and system-levelling basslines. However, it's what De Costa adds to these basic arrangements that really make this release stand out. Swirling textures, outer-space bleeps and sonic whooshes that glide in like airplane on their final descent over a housing estate towards the flight path, all make this a most unusual house record.
