  4. U$b Schtick & Turnt Burial (9:08)
Review: Madteo is not praised enough for his contribution to the modern dance sound. The Italian-born NYC 'insider', as he likes to call himself, has put out less music over the last 2-3 years, clearly preferring to keep himself out of the scene. But, this doesn't come as a surprise to us seeing as he's always resided on the outskirts of what looms in the dance circles. Scientrysts lands on his own imprint, M.A.D.T.E.O., and the release sees the producer head back to his shift club mode, a sound which was first championed by Rabih Beaini's Morphine Doser. "Scientrysts & Errorist" gets 2 mixes, the 'Stomp' version bangs out heavy drums over hazy, echoing sonics, while the 'Club' mix picks up the pace and lays down a handsome portion of dusty percussion. On the flip, "U$b Schtick & Turnt Burial" lands with the minimal hardware fuzz of the 'Psy' mix first, before delivering a sparse selection of bass waves on the original cut. The boss is back to his best...

Review: Berlin based up and comer Jordan Magee is up next on Portuguese imprint Helena, following up some consistently terrific releases from the likes of Altitude, Module Werks and Aleks. As the label best described themselves, Magee injects the best of Blighty with a northern swagger into his distinct twist on tech house as heard on tracks for Voiceless, Burbi and Mode Of Expression in recent years. On the Materials & Applications EP, he serves up some retro flavored techno inspired by first wave techno aesthetics. From the bleepy funk shuffle of "Liberties", the entrancing bells of "Kilo Culture" or the alien funk of "Process" - it's all killer no filler on this one.

Brooklyn (12")
Cat: ACRE 065. Rel: 08 Nov 16
  1. Brooklyn (8:09)
  2. The Carpenters (6:51)
Review: It feels like The Maghreban has been around for years but, in fact, the London-based house deviant released his first solo EP in 2014. Two successful years have established his name on the contemporary dance roster and, of course, releases for the likes of Versatile Records have certainly helped his name to propagate. He lands on the English capital's Black Acre imprint this week, armed with two unsurprisingly loose and hawk-eyed house experiments; the first, "Brooklyn" is an all-out synth frenzy, the sort of outsider house sketch with The Maghreban's familiar Eastern twang running all through it, while "The Carpenters" is a different sort of beast, a percussion-heavy, dub-fuelled tribal showdown with jazzy influences, and a mythical sort of tone to its harmonics. Recommended!

Lose It (12")
Cat: ACRE 062. Rel: 26 Jul 16
  1. Lose It (6:34)
  2. Wrong Move (5:57)
Review: Ayman Rostom has really taken to The Maghreban, with a succession of singles for Versatile and his own Zoot label that have shown him fully capable of bringing his sampling talents to the realm of house, disco and techno. The latest missive from The Maghreban comes on Black Acre, a label Rostom has previous with after that superb library music LP as Dr. Zygote a few years back. Two tracks deep, Lose It presents all that we love about The Maghreban; the title track sees a classic "girl I'm starting to lose it" phrase lifted off an early jungle classic from Boogie Times Tribe assembled with a monstrous analogue bassline and plenty of feverish effects tweaking in the mix. "Wrong Move" is just as smart, delving into the darkest depths of rugged breakbeat science.

  4. Euphoric 660 (Antenna remix) (6:38)
Review: Amsterdam's Magnesii has literally sprung out of the shadows over the last few years and, although he (or she?) has preferred to keep the releasing schedule rather sparse, everything that's been released has been of outstanding quality. The producer's last two releases were Rush-House only specials, which made us somewhat jealous, but thankfully we've been well-stocked with this new EP for Raw Tools. "Fata Oasa" is a deliciously rolling house number, gilled with wonder and mystique, whereas "Building Ultrabot" takes a more mechanical, techno-ridden stance. "Euphoric 660" is a dirty, analogue house chugger with a toasty wave of synths spewing out from all angles, transformed and twisted into oblivion thanks to Antenna's remix. Classy tools.

  1. I've Always Liked Grime (6:52)
  2. Black Palms (5:27)
  3. Menace II Society (6:42)
Review: Jordan Alexander's been rinsing it under his Mall Grab moniker, and every release since his debut back in 2015 has been hotly tipped by us here at Juno towers. EP's for Church, 1080p and Collect-Call have now earned him a spot on Unknown To The Unknown, one of our favourite labels and surely one of the most diverse, too. "I've Always Like Grime", as the name implies, is a house track made by someone who listened to high doses of Crazy Titch and Plastician back in the day, but "Black Palms" does its best to distance itself from the UK thanks to some pretty nasty acid bumps, and "Menace II Society" heads to Chicago with its singular vocal sample and dusty house flex. Sick!

  1. Syzlack (7:32)
  2. King Of Cool (with Zenner) (6:41)
  3. Boteco (7:11)
Review: Although Portugal's Malvito has only released a handful of EPs thus far, it is clear from his use of melodies and beats that this guy thinks way beyond the house / techno framework. He launches his own label to kick off 2018, Berimbau Discos, an outlet for his dextrous strain of neo-minimalism. The opener "Syzlack" is a harmonic glide through vast planes of bleeps, stretching the beats over rough textures, while "King Of Cool" features Zenner in what is a wild, sporadic attack of drums and jazzy coolness, layered with a majestic dub feel. Last but not least, "Boteco" bounces its fuzzy analogue drums over a sticky wall of tribal percussion, calling to the darkest, deepest depths of the jungle. An artist (and label) to watch out for this year...

  1. Sonic Pressure (8:00)
  2. HDS (8:47)
Review: Berlin's Geoff Kirkwood seems to be on a steady path to underground stardom, and this latest EP for Glasgow's legendary Optimo Trax is further proof of this dude's charisma behind the mixing desk. Just as a footnote, we'd like to add that he's appeared on everything from Hivern Discs to ESP Institute and even the excellent Correspondant - the label through which he released his first album - so you might want to check his entire catalogue pretty sharpish before it all starts going for mega bucks in the near future. Man Power is the alias, and "Sonic Pressure" is the A-side to this rocking two-tracker; a steady, charging house groove is lifted into hyperspace by all sorts of polyrhythmic melodies circling the mix like merry-go-round, heading into some pretty unexpected territories by the the time we reach the second chorus. The flip, "HDS", is a vintage house stomper, filled with half-breaks to take this tune from 2D to 3D, not to mention that banging bass pouncing slowly beneath it all. Recommended!

Review: Like much related to Paris's Yoyaku Studio, the Manitou series launched late last year with no concrete info on the mystery artist behind it. Predictably, this follow-up comes from another anonymous producer. The A-side track reminds us of mid-'90s British tech-house rather than contemporary European productions, featuring as it does Motor City style spacey electronics over a chunky house groove. The bold kick-drums and snappy snares return on the deep, bass-heavy and woozy "Track 2", before our man or woman of mystery breaks up the beats and reaches for the crashing cymbals on fluid and tactile closer "Track 3".

Review: IDM and experimental electronics dwelling on the outer limits of techno here, from one of the most impressive figures on the Scandinavian scene. Titled 'The 3D Printed Songbook', it features the emotive chill electro of "First Day" that kinda sounds like space invaders in your typewriter. We also enjoyed the slow burning afterhours techno of "It's Coming", equally impressive with its industrial edge: off-kilter/steely and textured rhythms alongside sludgy arpeggios. Despite its name, "Texas Is The Reason" sounds more like Buffalo, New York via Stockholm on this hypnotic sci-fi thriller that merges Mike Parker style dystopianism with Mannerfelt's penchant for lo-fi electronics. By contrast, the sublime ambient interludes In between act as nice palette cleansers for the ears. Released via his eponymous imprint, Mannerfelt kicks off 2018 on the right foot, following up work on Fever Ray's most recent album.

  1. The Theory (4:41)

  3. Limits To Growth (7:41)
  4. I Came (5:18)
Review: Peder Mannerfelt's live performance at Berlin Atonal 2015 featured an early '90s style virtual reality 3-D incarnation of the man himself, complete with mask (as seen on the cover) posing while his violent and psychotic analogue experiments powered away for nearly an hour. An excerpted edition of Mannerfelt's performance features here on the festival's rebooted label. On the A side, the sonar communications on "The Theory" feature, while the shocking grind and squeal of "Lines Describing A Circle" give a good audio snapshot of what the night sounded like. On the flip, "Limits To Growth" features bass powered half by drone pulsations, half by what sound like Gregorian chants, supporting laser zaps and cut up vocal loops. The jagged and angular groove "I Came" shares the same style of tongue-in-cheek weirdness as Diagonal's Powell, who played the same night.

Review: While Peder Mannerfelt has a history of delivering club-ready techno cuts - admittedly, mostly under the Subliminal Kid alias - his recent releases have been stoutly experimental affairs. This, though, should be considered something of a return to his bombastic dancefloor roots. Slipping out on Will Bankhead and Joy Orbison's hyped Hinge Finger imprint, the EP is chock full of rave-influenced rollers and throbbing, floor-friendly slammers. Chief amongst these is "Clear Eyes, Full Heart", a sweaty, full-body jacker blessed with creepy pads, pulsating rave bass, screeching sirens and dub-wise vocal snippets. It's utterly filthy, in the best possible way, and could well become one of the year's most ubiquitous tracks.
