  1. Deleted (feat Sara Z)

  3. Fool (feat Angelina Lucero)
  4. True (feat Angelina Lucero)
Review: After a series of self-released tracks and remixes on labels such as Fool's Gold and Guns In The Sun, Jerome LOL jumps over to Friends Of Friends with this stunning four track EP. Expressing his most expansive soundset, each one of these tracks shows a whole new side to him. "Always" sounds like Disclosure performed by a full live band with Sara Z's lyrics hitting spots very few house records ever can. "True", meanwhile, is a cosmic, navel gazing slice of black soul that wouldn't go amiss on a Trentemoller record. Elsewhere we're slapped into slo-mo shuffle submission by "Deleted" and pummelled by industrial strength rhythms on "Fool". An exceptional EP, don't buy this for the LULZ, buy it for the LOL.

  1. Wireless (4:15)
  2. Moonbase (5:05)
  3. Pusher (4:13)
  4. Fallow (4:42)
Review: Kirk Degiorgio's Applied Rhythmic Technology label shakes itself out of a two year release slumber with this freshly-pressed and freshly-dressed 12" from London Modular Alliance. This Wireless 12" is the debut release from the London Modular Alliance trio of Simon Lynch, Phil Ventre and Gavin 'Koova' Pykerman but there is a confidence exhibited throughout that is a reflection of the bond developed over a series of live sets together. A razor sharp approach to darker strains of electro is the order of the day here, witness how the various elements on lead track "Wireless" fizz aggressively against each other, whilst "Marauder" almost sounds like Randomer trying his hand at the style. "Pusher" sees the trio veer off into hardcore territory and will probably sound immense on a big system, though the intensity never quite boils over in the manner you want it too! "Fallow" closes the 12" out with a heady atmospheric approach complemented by some icy rhythmic snaps.

R&S
Cat: RS 1803. Rel: 07 Jun 18
  1. Temples (7:35)
  2. Hyper Seconds (7:52)
Review: One of the joys of Lone's Ambivert Tools series has been the sheer rush-inducing cheeriness of the whole thing. Melodious, colourful, giddily positive and shot through with heaps of Sunrise-era rave nostalgia, each of the EPs has come packed with music that makes you want to dance with a goofy smile on your face. You'll be glad to hear that both tracks on volume three are likely to have the same effect. On side A you'll find "Temples", a mid-tempo, breakbeat-driven affair rich in swooning Motor City chords and spiraling, intergalactic electronic melodies. Flip for "Hyper Seconds", a fluttering 4/4 excursion that sounds like Orbital (circa the Brown Album or Snivilisation) jamming with Juan Atkins. Pure sonic bliss.

Echolocations EP (double 12")

  1. Coreshine Voodoo
  2. Explorers
  3. Dolphin
  4. Approaching Rainbow
  5. Rapid Racer
  6. Blossom Quarter
Review: Lone debuts on the R&S imprint with this packed double twelve inch release that demonstrates a growing maturity in the new sound the Nottingham based producer unveiled on last winter's impressive Emerald Fantasy Tracks. Shy of that mini LP by only three tracks, the six productions that form Echolocations tighten the focus to 90s Detroit and Chicago, though the distinctive melodic stabs that characterised EFT remain - something that's apparent as soon as the huge drop in "Coreshine Voodoo" arrives! Elsewhere "Dolphin" delights via the vast swathes of melodies that wash over the intricate layers of percussion that build and drop with expertise whilst "Approaching Rainbow" is perhaps Lone at his most rhythmically rigid, with mellow bursts of colour and texture arising from the rasping Strafe-esque drums.

  1. Grn-HF (7:14)
  2. Acidspix (7:42)
Review: Italian techno demi-god Lory D returns with the third instalment of the Strange Days series for Glasgow's Numbers! This guy is simply unstoppable and it's simply incredible to hear how he has managed to keep his sound so damn contemporary over the years. Oh, and it's rumoured that he used to be one of Aphex Twin's favourite techno artists back in the day! "Gm-HF" is a heads-down kinda nodder, packing a humongous bassline for the peak time floor, while "Acidspix", as the name suggests, is a beautifully odd 303 jam with enough stability to make it a perfectly usable dancefloor weapon. What more can we say? It's totally unmissable and warmly recommended.

The Saturnian System (hand-stamped 12")

  1. The Saturnian System (9:44)
  2. The Sequel (5:28)
  3. Self Destruct Sequence (8:09)
  4. Birth (3:50)
Review: Back in 2006, mysterious techno crew Lost Trax made their debut via a much-lauded - and now hard-to-find - EP on Daz Quayle's SCSI-AV label. Delsin, a label that has never shied away from reissuing underground gems, has now decided to re-release it. From the word go, it's easy to see why they were so keen to put it out again. Title track "The Saturnian System" is a deliciously spacey and emotion-rich chunk of acid-flecked, floor-friendly electro full of sweeping chords and eyes-closed melodies, while "The Sequel" remains a second-wave "intelligent techno" classic. Elsewhere, they join the dots between rubbery electro and yearning techno on "Self Destruct Sequence", before fixing melancholic Motor City melodies to a liquid tech-house groove on closer "Birth".

  2. Don't Need Nobody (4:14)
  3. Going Dutch (4:17)
  4. The Snow Is Falling (5:03)
Review: Although Cliff Lothar's music has been in demand ever since his first EP on Viewlexx back in 2013, the producer hasn't been outing out tonnes of music. Instead, he's opted to stick close to home and has only released on a handful of labels including Skudge White and the present Riverette out of Spain. The Old Jams Die Hard EP is the first volume of a likely series and its classic Lothar, where the grooves of "Tugeda" are tightly packed and hard-hitting. There's also some funkier moments in "Don't Need Nobody, raw and jacking drum machines oddities on "Going Dutch", and a deeper, meaner kinda vibe on "The Snow Is Falling". Killer.

  2. Nicola Kazimir - "}{{{" (5:38)
  3. Walid - "Posterior Spinneret" (5:22)
  4. Audino - "Venus Flytrap" (5:02)
Review: Eccentric imprint Les Points returns for the first time in 2018, bringing with it a quartet of cuts from "Various Xenopunks". Louh kicks things off with a fizzing, saucer-eyed techno shuffler that fixes classic electro chords and Motor City melodies to a bustling and forthright rhythm track, before Nicola Kazimir dips a mentalist, bass-heavy electro workout in modular distortion and a variety of mind-altering spoken word samples. Over on side B, Walid's "Posterior Spinneret" is a fine chunk of end-of-days electro with added foreboding noises, while Audinio's "Venus Flytrap" is the kind of wonky, acid-fired romp that would once have formed part of Rephlex Records' Braindance series of releases.

  2. 3Sex (5:46)
  3. Donnoo (5:45)
  4. Not U I Won't 1,2,3 (5:15)
Review: To date, cult 'working man's techno' label White Material has given Young Male, DJ Richard, and Galcher Lustwerk the chance to shine on their own 12" but they've long promised to provide a platform for further members of the collective to show what they are capable of. Having previously contributed one of the tracks on the fourth White Material release, Morgan Louis steps up to deliver his formal debut which features four productions and three B-side loops. While undeniably deep, the EP touches on a number of techno styles, from the melodious, atmospheric and metronomic title track, to the paranoid creepiness and rolling rhythms of "Donnoo". Arguably best of all, though, is "3Sex", a chunk of almost claustrophobic minimal techno full of barely audible voices and dusty textures.

Review: After 19 years in the game, techno veteran Jens "Lowtec" Kuhn is still going strong. While he's recently been in a nostalgic mood - as reissues of early material prove - Kuhn is still capable of producing fresh, high quality material. There's much to enjoy about this first EP for new Malmo label Blundar, from the loud tape hiss, spooky melodies and weirdo ambient dub intent of "Track 2", to the moody, early Autechre throb of Skam-ish closer "Track 4". Dancefloor-minded thrills come in the shape of hypnotic opener "Track 1" - all unsettling, one-note chords, restless rhythms and distant electronics - and the hard-to-pigeonhole madness of the schizophrenic "Track 3".

  3. In Flames
  4. Luminescence
Review: Hong Kong based label Fragrant Harbour has thus far supported work from choice leftfield beat candidates such as General Ludd, Fulbert and Renart, and this time turns its attentions to international outfit LPZ. There's a modernist, UK-leaning style to their brand of mutant techno, focusing on crooked, moody rhythms that sup from the same font as Livity Sound et al. "Triangular" crashes and bangs its drums through blissful pads before "Heliopolis" pushes the kick to the foreground and dives into more meditative depths. "In Flames" rides some dreamy breakbeat tones and "Luminescence" rounds the EP off with another crafty pairing of off-centre beats and soundsystem-ready tones.

  1. Process 1 (5:12)
  2. Process 2 (6:54)
  3. Process 3 (10:34)
Review: This debut single from previously unseen outfit LSD is remarkable for a number of reasons, not least the fact that the trio is made up of legendary UK techno producers Luke Slater, Steve Bicknell and Dave Summer AKA Function. Given their collective history of making thumping, mind-altering techno, you'd expect Progress to be both heavy and trippy. That's certainly what you get from opener "Process 1", where psychedelic electronics and cascading, otherworldly noises rise above an armour-plated techno groove. They push the envelope even further on "Process 2", a track blessed with restless cymbal lines and weird, off-key electronics. In comparison, the similarly intense "Process 3" seems deep and woozy, though the incessant, 1990 style bleeps and "LFO" style synths guarantees a suitably hallucinogenic feel throughout.

  4. Tu Sei Il Maestro Dell'Eterno Ritorno
Review: After first teaming up with Uzuri back in 2016, Italian producer Giorgio Luceri finally makes a return with a second part of his Space Fire Truth series. There seems to be a concept lingering in the presentation of the music, but let's focus on the sounds themselves. "Collinder 69 Funk" is an effervescent burst of uplifting energy with a groove that feels housey underneath plush Detroit techno synths. "The Early Morning Ouroboros" switches things up with a pacey, chopped up broken beat trip peppered with soulful vocals and instrumentation. "Kepler 16b" is a moodier affair that lets the techno side of Luceri's sound bleed through, and then "Tu Sei Il Maestro Dell'Eterno Ritorno" finishes the record off on a stirring, romantic tip with swooning strings aplenty.
