Week-End (hand-stamped 140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: DEGREY 002. Rel: 12 Feb 18
  1. Week-End (5:43)
  2. 6PNHHPE (7:04)
  3. Stabilizer (4:36)
  4. Seita (5:36)
Review: De Grey launched last year with a 12" from Webstarr, and now it follows up with the raw, rough and ready sound of Jack Angle. "Week-End" is a lithe, percussive beast of a track that matches bloated kicks with glassy hits for a tracky but distinctive end result. "6PNHHPE" is a looped up, off-kilter affair that sports an industrial techno thread but heads into stranger territory with ease. "Stablilizer" is a more balanced, melodic affair but again those distinctive metallic tones pervade the mix and inject some real character into Angle's music. "Selta" takes this approach and whips it up into the most lively, peak-time minded belter on the whole record, sneakily tucked away on the B2.

Avers EP (12")

  1. Avers (6:44)
  2. Revers (7:55)
  3. Stars (Vladislava Lefor vocal) (5:24)
  4. Stars (Tin Man remix) (6:39)
Review: Ukrainian techno duo Animous have grown fast over the last few years, and they've set themselves a pretty high bar thanks to some excellent EPs. We now expect the best from them, and that's precisely what they give us here with these four warehouse fillers. "Avers" is slow and could be associated to the house end of the dance spectrum, but its sounds are dark and convoluted enough to make it a tune that would appeal to the darker DJ minds out there, and the same can be said for "Revers" and its perfect balance between calm and frenetic. "Stars" features Vladislava Lefor on the vocals, and its a magical acid house number on a truly deep vibe, but bid don Tin Man brings the acid out in the best way possible through his remix and, of course, with his trademark style. Don't snooze on it.

Cat: KBLV 006. Rel: 16 Aug 17
  1. Eduction (8:49)
  2. Eduction (Hironori Takahashi remix) (6:54)
Review: This is the sixth vinyl release from the Kin-Ben LABEL, based in Niihama City, Japan. Releasing since 2012, the label was founded by Akinori Ishii aka The Human & Assets. When it comes to hypnotic techno, the Japanese really know a thing or two and this release follows in the tradition of such masters of the art as Iori, Wata Igarashi or the legendary Takaaki Itoh. On the A side is the slow burning alien groove of "Eduction" which drones and slithers away nefariously in odd synthesis and creepy sound design. This one will will appeal to fans of Mike Parker or Rrose. On the flip, Tokyo techno stalwart Hironori Takahashi (Gynoid/Arts) is back. His rework of the track is more straight ahead and certainly in your face! This industrial strength epic is full of harsh metallic strikes and ultra hypnotic loops, supported by a relentless warehouse style stomp.

Cat: MH 003. Rel: 01 May 18
  1. Lord 35 (5:10)
  2. Corruption (feat Enushu Taye - Mystik edit) (7:25)
Review: Melbourne's Modern Hypnosis fly direct to Ausburg Germany for their third instalment. It comes courtesy of rising dub techno conjurer Another Channel a man who's clearly in his element playing the spacious ground between original dub, techno and beats. Analogue to the very core "Lord 35" runs with such a smooth, warm pull and the rhythm focus that switches when the second melodic layer bubbles up to the surface. Flip for even more cavernous bewitching brew with alluring vocals from Enushu Taye. Full immersion.

  1. Hang Dawg (5:20)
  2. The White Horse (5:11)
  3. Garrison (6:19)
  4. Dave The Rave (5:37)
Review: For those who like their techno banging but springy, 2014 was the year of Ansome. The South London producer - real name Keiran Whitefield - followed up a decent debut on Mord with five more EPs during the year. While he's been a little less active in 2015, Whitefield has still found time to deliver material on Mindcut and PLS.UK. Here he makes his Perc Trax debut with a quartet of no-holds-barred techno smashers. For the most part, his sound is distorted and industrial-influenced, but with enough funk and spacey electronics to please those who prefer a more Motor City influenced sound. Of the four tracks on offer, it's the buzzing title track, intense "Dave The Rave", and slightly more cosmic "Hang Dawg" that impress most.

Rave Or Die 11 (coloured vinyl 10")
Cat: ROD 11. Rel: 09 Nov 18
  1. Ansome - "Vakuum" (5:09)
  2. Umwelt - "Affres" (5:09)
Review: For the latest single on Umwelt's essential Rave or Die label, the Lyon-based producer finds himself sharing vinyl space with Perc Trax regular Ansome. The South London producer handles side A, assaulting the senses via distorted breakbeats, chilling, held-note horror strings and gory electronic riffs on the industrial techno insanity of "Vakuum". Umwelt's track, "Affres", explores similar sonic territory, though his use of macabre audio loops, redlined electronics and rapid-fire, ray gun drumbeats gives the track a much more rolling and hypnotic feel. Both cuts are wild-eyed and aggressive in tone, even if they are every bit as sci-fi as classic Detroit cuts.

Neume (12")
Cat: OTON 94. Rel: 23 Jun 16
  1. Neume (7:00)
  2. Meta (7:09)
  3. Vis (4:53)
Review: "Neume", the title track from Answer Code Request's first Ostgut Ton outing for two years, sounds like a dancefloor warning of dark times ahead. Percussively intricate but rhythmically hypnotic, much of its' allure stems from the producer's use of seriously foreboding chords and creepy string sweeps. "Meta" is a little more positive in outlook, with dreamier chords and pads combining well with a beat pattern that sits somewhere between Tectonic techno and West London broken beat. Finally, he expertly combined pitched-up hip-hop beats, heavy analogue bass and sunset-friendly pads on the deliciously hazy closer, "Vis".

Breath (limited 12")
Cat: AIR. Rel: 23 Jan 14
  1. Breath
  2. Lungs
Review: Where to place Weevil Neighbourhood? Is this dub techno? Perhaps. Dubstep? Maybe. Drum and bass? Sometimes. Experimental? Yes: in the truest sense of the word. It draws from all these aforementioned styles and more, resulting in the formation of a reclusive German label breaking the framework of many electronic music genres wide open. The title-track from Anthone's second EP for the label is where the dub techno suggestion comes from thanks to its caustic chord sequences, only there's flashes of dubstep beat designs and loose drum and bass textures similar to what can be heard on Felix K's Flowers Of Destruction. On the flip, "Lungs" is instrumental and live feeling. In parts it sounds like a band playing, while in others you can here the work of samplers looping, and when combined, it offers an industrial soundscape that's like merging some of the darker rock and metal stylings from Sex Tags No Amfibia with Regis' Sandra Electronics project, only reduced to the point of almost being ambient.

  1. A Violent Collision (4:52)
  2. Adriatic Front (4:57)
  3. Cyborg (4:17)
  4. Destroy This Fucking System (4:34)
Review: Mancunian lo-fi house heroes Natural Sciences are back with a bang in 2018: now giving us a second serving of throwback electro sounds courtesy of one Antonio Barbetta. He has had some great releases recently as Raw Ambassador on Mannequin and Ortloff. The Germany based Italian producer serves up what the label best described themselves as 'panzer funk and mechanised thrash metal from the shadows of Frankfurt's industrial district' and that's pretty spot on! There's the guttural futurist sludge of opening track "A Violent Collision" that will appeal to fans of Lux Rec or Return To Disorder, not to mention other excursions through heavy dystopian machine funk like on "Destroy This Fucking System". The breakneck "Adriatic Funk" is a full frontal assault that calls to mind the UK sounds of Bass Junkie & Dexorcist from a while back, while "Cyborg" is a fitting tribute to his new hometown's favourite son: the one and only Anthony Rother.

  4. Supernova Blue Shift (7:03)
Review: The third release on Verdant frames AOS and Sonitus Eco opposite each other for an original production and a corresponding remix, plumbing the depths of submerged techno to dazzling effect. "Hubble" is a soothing lullaby of machine soul, which then receives a shot of adrenaline for the snappier "Red Shift" version. "Supernova" has a tougher framework, but the synths continue to reach for the stars with uplifting results. Then the "Blue Shift" version of "Supernova" taps up a melancholic house approach that wouldn't sound out of place on an early Kompakt release.

Review: Some 25 years after delivering his debut 12", Richard D James hasn't lost the ability to thrill or inspire. By his obtuse standards, the material that makes up the surprise Cheetah EP is actually rather laidback and melodious. "Cheetah2 (LD Spectrum)", for example, sounds like a slow house jam written by robots, while the even deeper "Cheetah7B" shuffles along in a metronomic fashion, seemingly oblivious to the increasingly aggressive World at large. Of course, those trademark skittish IDM rhythms are present and the Cornishman has thrown in a couple of hazy ambient cuts for good measure.

  1. When Grounds Shift (The Otolith Is Obsolete) (5:47)
  2. Gravity's Pitfalls (6:13)
Review: Kl.ne and CRESC continue to developed their APHTC project with two new rhythmic spells on brand new kinetic body music label Arcane Patterns. Wild freestyle percussion, fractured breaks and an all round physical sensation to both sides, once again we're hurled into unchartered sonic territory. "When Grounds Shift" sideswipes from the off with a curious polyrhythm that sits somewhere between IG Culture Shackleton. "Gravity's Pitfalls" rolls with a little more of a conventional sense of techno and tribal momentum while still sounding like nothing else on this planet. Follow the patterns...

  1. Ena (6:50)
  2. Dyo (8:04)
  3. Tria (7:22)
  4. Tessera (6:59)
Review: After making an intriguing start with a 12" from Hephaestus last year, the god-minded Olympos label returns with Apollo at the helm. Quite whether this music is in fact the handiwork of mythical deities remains to be seen, but it does result in some fantastic techno. "Ena" is a proper trance-inducing workout full of undulating synths and nagging percussive threads, while "Dyo" goes even further into intricate beat patterns and spooky atmospherics. "Tria" opens the sound out into a blissful trip through ambient techno with a backbone, while "Tessera" places more emphasis on mellow chord pulses to stake its own claim on this 12" of advanced techno explorations.

  3. Vurstep (Shed remix)
  4. Vurstep (Forest Drive West remix)
Review: Appleblim teams up with the Middle Eastern label Boogie Box once more for some hybridized explorations on the cutting edge of soundsystem music. "Vurstep" is a wildly psychedelic banger that keeps the rhythms broken while the sound design levels tap into the same delirious vein as his ALSO work with Second Storey. "Dream Wisdom" takes things in a smoother direction, riding on laid back breaks and plush threads of melody in a vintage ambient techno style. Shed steps up to remix "Vurstep" and delivers one of his pointed masterclasses in stripped, UK-leaning techno, and then Forest Drive West trips the whole thing out with a heavily dubbed meditation.

  1. Appointment Anniversary (Lucretio remix)
  2. Appointment Anniversary (Marieu remix)
  3. Appointment Anniversary (John Swing remix)
  4. Appointment Anniversary (Emg remix)
Review: By now every vinyl enthusiast must be familiar with the Appointment crew. Founded by hardware enthusiasts Marieu, EMG, John Swing and Lucretio in early 2010, the four artists have been unleashing occasional live jams whenever they could meet up in the same city to thrash them out. To celebrate the Appointment label's tenth release, the team decided to issue their own individual versions of a single group production. Lucretio opts to transform it into stomping slowed-down gabber-rave, while Marieu takes an approach that's half broken beat, half ghetto house. John Swing's is possibly the most forthright of the lot, with a hip-house inspired version that slams hard, while EMG trades speed for sheer density, with a crunchy techno version that ploughs through all in its path.

Anil Aras leads the mission with a rippling Detroitian understated number simply called "Track 1". He's flanked by Paolo Rocco and Moises. The former ups the temperature and gets us in a lather with the insistent pace of "Ill" while the latter sooths our souls and oils our joints with the slippery hypnosis session "Easy Beauty". Finally Esposito & Nadje run point with the heaviest tool of the trip - the bubbling technoid "HBP". Friends till the end!

  1. Form Of Change
  2. A Mental Image
Review: Charles Noel has been enjoying a resurgence of late, with his early explorations as Archetype resurfacing on a number of reissue labels. Future Primitive have tapped Noel up for two cuts that typify his left-of-centre approach, leading in with the sharp-edged beat excursion "Form Of Change" that will appeal to all lovers of reduced, off-kilter rhythm workouts. "A Mental Image" adopts a softer stance, laying out a bed of silken pads and errant tweaks that tap into the head-tripping mood of vintage techno while maintaining the future-minded thrust that makes true machine music timeless, whichever era it was crafted in.
