Post Present (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: PRIVATEPERSONS 003. Rel: 27 Jun 17
  1. Post Present (8:49)
  2. Can't Love Life Without U (9:00)
  3. Lubov (5:38)
Review: Following fine outings from Gazatech and Youngg P, Moscow-based Private Persons has turned to long-established producer Florian Kupfer for release number three. He kicks things off with "Post Present", a pleasingly lo-fi, analogue-sounding chunk of deep house that wraps reverb-laden vocal samples and fluttering synthesizer motifs around a tactile, old school house groove. While sturdy enough to sound good booming out of big sound systems, much of the track's power is derived from the drifting waviness of its sparse samples and melodies. Flip to the B-side for the driving but distorted drums and spacey chords of "Can't Love Life Without U", and the slowly shifting, Pete Namlook style ambient of "Lubov".

Unfinished (12")
Cat: TCLR 017. Rel: 21 Jul 16
  1. Elle (5:38)
  2. Erika (8:14)
  3. Being Me (6:41)
  4. Unfinished (6:18)
Review: The associations with LIES will always be there thanks to his breakout helium house burner "Feelin" back in 2013, but Florian Kupfer hasn't been afraid to showcase his DJ-friendly wares on other labels either. Dean Bryce's Technicolour division of Ninja Tune first asked for a Kup of Flo last year with the pleasantly diverse Explora 12" and the German artist returns for a second record on the label in the shape of Unfinished which has already got the Hessle Audio Rinse show seal of approval. Kupfer is on smouldering form throughout, bringing a sense of melodic incandescence to opening cut, "Elle," whilst "Erika" could easily be mistaken for a Terekke production. "Being Me" is blown out and boomy and totally fresh, whilst the title track sees Kupfer end proceedings on some sweeping ambient rife with spectral field recordings.

Hungry For Candy (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: VV 024. Rel: 25 Sep 17
  1. Fake Blood
  2. Hungry For Candy
  3. Sweet Tooth
  4. Manipulation
Review: Commonly found lurking around L.I.E.S., Technicolour and W.T. Records, Florian Kupfer has plenty of credentials in the noisier end of the hardware house and techno scene, so it makes perfect sense to find him sidling up to Valcron Video in collaborative moder with Torn Hawk. The results are predictably excellent, from the gnarled emotional wrangles of "Fake Blood" to the blown out ambience of "Hungry For Candy". "Sweet Tooth" comes on like a dishevelled club workout, and then "Manipulation" rounds the record off with a tongue in cheek spoken word and ambience piece that packs some serious music underneath the irreverent chit chat.

Alpha (12" repress)
Cat: OTON 107. Rel: 30 Aug 18
  1. Alpha (6:58)
  2. Quantum (6:33)
  3. Source (5:55)
  4. Ritual (7:14)
Review: It was only a matter of time before Etapp Kyle, Ukrainian's new techno king, made it onto the mighty Ostgut Ton. A flurry of releases for Klockworks and Unterton paved the way for these four new tunes on One of Berlin's most legendary institutions, and it's not hard to think about how well these murky bangers would penetrate the Berghain dancefloor. "Alpha" is a deep and cerebral techno spear with a heavy bit of dub bass at its core, and "Quantum" follows up with neat swarms of designer bleeps for the more mindful techno DJs. Over on the B-side, "Source" has all the characteristics of what we like to call 'mind-tech', or rather, the sort of gear to pulsate through the piste at the crack of dawn, which leaves "Ritual" to break the trip with a cavernous wormhole of minimal textures.

Klockworks 20.1 (double 12")
Cat: KLOCKWORKS 20.1. Rel: 03 Oct 17
  1. Etapp Kyle - "Essay" (5:29)
  2. Jon Hester - "Let's Go" (5:26)
  3. Adam Craft - "Aphite 49" (6:31)
  4. Sterac - "Lately" (6:37)
  5. Ben Klock - "Twenty" (6:29)
  6. DVS1 - "In The Middle" (6:39)
  7. Trevino - "Sombre Tones" (4:53)
Review: The good chaps over at Hardwax, Klockworks' own distribution network, are calling this a "perfectionist techno compilation" and, in their own words, it comes "warmly recommended". We agree with both of statements, and believe this to be a fine piece of work from the Ben Klock collective. Perhaps listeners won't hear anything drastically game-changing in here, but it is certainly all dance music of the highest calibre, from a collection of artists who have truly crafted a neat and elegant vision of techno music. On this double, the first in an upcoming series, there's a mixture of old and new faces all coming together to showcase the sound they've been so close to over the years; the wonderful Sterac makes an appearance with a refreshingly off-kilter blur of dub techno on "Lately", while Ben Klock himself comes through with the ice-cold bleeps of "Twenty", and the mighty DVS1 blasts out some penetrative percussion folds on "In The MIddle. Trevino rocks the boat with "Sombre Tones", whereas relative newcomers Etapp Kyle and Jon Hester turn in their own 5am bullets.

  1. The West End As It Will Be (5:54)
  2. Line Sunk Like I'm Sunk (5:49)
Review: Is 2015 Batu's year? The Bristol producer first served notice of his talents for mutated, bass-led techno back in 2013 with a pair of standout 12"s for Cold Recordings and Livity's reverse sub-label. After some time out of the spotlight, Batu has returned with renewed vigour this year as new and exciting 12"s have popped up on Hotline and Beneath's Mistry. The establishment of his own Timedance label seems an important part of the Batu story too and this second release finds him adopting the A&R mantle to introduce L. Sae. Admittedly no newcomer, L. Sae is the latest production handle of Joe Higgins, a UK producer previously known for his output under the Metrist name for labels such as Fifth Wall and Resin. This two track 12", The West End As It Will Be, sees Matthews veer off into more abstract techno terrain, especially the title track which is caked with tape dust. A great 12" this.

  1. Safe Mode (extended mix) (7:15)

  3. Turbulence (4:42)
Review: L Vis 1990, steps out of the Night Slugs catalogue and jumps onto Machinedrum and Jimmy Edgar's magnificently curated Ultramajic imprint - and you know what that means. The dance outsider comes presents his Dance System project, and the opener "Safe Mode" is a bumpy techno attack with plenty of warm house sensibility. "Dos 4" is where things turns odder, more minimalistic and shadowy, but it's "Turbulance" that gets all the attention from us, thanks to its jacking barrel of kick drums, and leftfield sonic cyclone. It's L Vis, alright!

  3. Outbreaker (6:36)
Review: Since breaking out back in 2010, Sanna La Fleur Engdahl has switched between her own label, Power Plant, and home city imprint Watergate. Here she makes her first appearance on the Berlin imprint for two years. A-side "Devil Sigh", where delay-laden, dub-wise vocal snippets ricochet around aggressive, end-of-days stabs, alien electronics and a driving rhythm track, is our pick of the bunch, though the woozier and more positive - nay, impressively glassy-eyed - title track (B2) is also rather good. Rush-inducing, shirt-removing thrills are provided by Tuff City Kids, whose piano-laden, hands-in-the-air rub of "Devil Sigh" sounds like a future anthem.

Review: We were first made aware of Lack's music thanks to Rabih Beaini's excellent Morphine imprint - always a source of sonic quality - and the US artist has begun to catch the attention of other, like-minded label heads wanting something a little different in their catalogue. Labelled as 'non-music' or simply 'experimental', Lack's music is hard to pin down and define in words, but that is precisely what draws us closer to it. On this EP for Hot Releases, each one of these four magnetic slices of industrial-minded fuzz lives in a world of its own, suspended in mid-air by intricate twists of metallic tape, eerie background noises and a distinctive 'dub' feel. Let's put it this way, if King Tubby and Throbbing Gristle had ever met, this is what their minds could have looked like in the same studio...

  1. Invoke (5:04)

  3. Meld (Rrose remix) (7:41)
  4. Searching In Circles (3:37)
Review: The second release from Dublin based label Eotrax comes from nomadic producer Lair. With a diverse background that includes singing classical and traditional material, the Irish sound artist has expanded her artistic approach into a diverse multi-disciplinary approach. The music has elements of mysticism, sacred geometry and energy: sound with intention. A side tracks "Invoke" and "Meld" respectively utilise the human voice to create mesmerising and esoteric drones that are chilling as much as they are beautiful. Assisted by pads and textures, likely created by digital synthesis that further add to the mysterious and evocative sound environment. On the flip, hypnotic techno heroine Rrose delivers the goods as always with her singular sound, taking you deep into the darklands of techno. Label boss Eomac; who many of you may now as one half of duo Lakker, has stated that this release is a bold move for the label, as it moves away from the dancefloor and into more diverse and experimental fields. Sounds promising indeed and we cannot wait for what is in store next.

Review: American expat in Berlin Lando has been quite the success story. Since moving to the German capital several years ago, he's been a regular fixture on the local circuit, praised for his energetic DJ sets and great releases for the likes of Hotflush and his own Myth Music imprint. Fast forward to 2018, the California native releases his next killer on DVS1's always reliable Mistress with four functional cuts on the Hutch EP. They take their cues from house and techno and somewhere in between. From the emotive title track, the fierce rhythmic jack of "Ceremony" or the deepy hypnotic DJ tool "Tonight We Land" calling to mind the early sounds of Robert Hood's M-Plant.

Review: Techno legend Neil Landstrumm requires no introduction on here, seeing as how he has been present - and largely leading - our charts since we opened shop in the late 90s. He is techno, and techno is him, much like the Detroit or Chicago greats that we all know and love so much. We're glad to see him on Unknown To The Unknown, DJ Haus' imprint, up in the wax with his predictably oddball strain of techno, first launching an off-kilter attack with "DX Madness", before heading into deeper, darker and more subtle territories via "Rectorate Power". On the flip, "Sleep" and "Grape" both feature Brain Rays, with both tracks possessing a much more sparse, 12-bit sound that verges onto vintage electronica. Landstrumm gear.
