  1. Yggdrassil
  2. Niddhog (Johannes Volk remix)
  3. Niddhog
Review: Melbourne's Short Black label has been relatively sporadic with its releases up until now, having started back in 2013 with Matt Kennedy's Together At 2am EP and dropping the third release on the label back in 2016, Rustal's Privilege. Hopefully this excellent new transmission from newcomer Tristan Kino will be the start of more productivity from the crew. The EP starts off in fine style with the nervy, reduced acid twitch of "Yggdrassil", while at the other end of the record "Niddhog" presents a tougher, darker throwdown crafted for seedy techno dancefloors. Johannes Volk has been snapped up for remix duties, and does a sterling service with the metallic clang of his version of "Niddhog".

  1. Kiss The Floor - "This Desire" (3:07)
  2. Karl & The Kurbcrawlers - "Same Day (Again)" (3:36)
Review: Oliver Ho's industrial-minded Death & Leisure label enjoyed a successful debut year in 2016, serving up a trio of quietly impressive releases. This EP, the label's first of 2017, is effectively a showcase for the work of Ho's old pal Regis, AKA Karl O'Connor. On the A-side he joins forces with Veronica Vasicka as Kiss The Floor, wrapping mind-altering bass and layered vocals around a sparse drum machine beat on minimal wave throb-job "This Desire". O'Connor goes solo on the flip as Karl & The Kurbcrawlers, indulging his industrial punk fantasies on the apocalyptic slammer that is "Same Day" again. He even gets on the mic, coming on like Jilted John after a few too many sherberts.

Momentum (12")
Cat: PLE 653916. Rel: 18 Apr 18
  1. Momentum (12:59)
  2. Repeat After Me (9:56)
Review: While Carl Craig was in Buenos Aries last year, he ended up in the studio with Argentine outfit Klauss, a combo renowned for their live electronic performances. Here, we finally get a chance to hear the results, which pit the experienced Detroiter's love of loopy, dancefloor-focused hypnotism against the band's modular electronics, moody industrial and new wave influences. A-side "Momentum" sets the tone, with the track subtly building over 10 mesmerizing minutes via foreboding treated guitars, psychedelic acid lines and paranoia-inducing modular electronics. Flip for the similarly epic "Repeat After Me", an arguably more widescreen affair that makes even more of Klauss' otherworldly guitar motifs and crackling, out-of-this-world synthesizer motifs. What it lacks in dancefloor grunt, it more than makes up for in atmosphere.

  4. The God In Vodka (14:00)
Review: While he is capable of delivering a dystopian cassette of bleak techno and wayward electronica at the drop of a hat, Nick Klein's music doesn't appear on vinyl all that often. In fact, this EP for alter is his first 12" since a much talked about appearance on L.I.E.S back in 2016. As you'd expect, the vibe is gritty, strange and otherworldly throughout, with Klein variously turning his hand to Aphex Twin style ambient ("Burning Mattresses"), redlined, out-there techno (the distorted bass and alien synthesizers of "Pena Adobe"), bouncy revivalist EBM (dancefloor-friendly workout "Smelling The Streets") and Vatican Shadow style wild electronic soundscapes ("The God in Vodka").

  1. Chats With Lucy (5:56)
  2. Christian Rock Concert (5:40)
  3. Do You Want To Crash? (4:33)
  4. Pain Management Resource (8:37)
Review: Helms's Alter label is the latest to be seduced by the Primitive Languages of New York-based Nick Klein, whose brash industrialisms have previously featured on Entro Senestre's BANK, German labels MMODEMM and Unknown Precept and cult US tape crew Ascetic House. The Lonesome Dealer features some wonderfully evocative track titles ("Christian Rock Concert" and "Pain Resource Management") and continues Klein's grotty amalgamation of techno rhythms with the powerful sonic impact of noise traditions. If you have been enjoying the output of Beau Wanzer or Maoupa Mazzocchetti recently you should certainly check this 12" out! The Cabaret Voltaire gone Reggaeton of lead track "Chats with Lucy" and the deranged abstraction of B-side opener "Do You Want To Crash?" are particular highlights.

BNK007 (limited hand-stamped 7")
Cat: BNK 007. Rel: 10 Aug 16
  1. Track 1 (3:20)
  2. Track 2 (4:06)
Review: Entro Senestre's BANK label is back this time with a couple of the scene's favourite analogue noise merchants: local sonic terrorist Nick Klein (Primitive Languages/Alter) and Brussels mutant EBM pusher Maoupa Mazzocchetti (PRR! PRR!/Mannequin) with a collaboration that is as rusty and grungy as you could certainly imagine. On the A side, the untitled first offering is a snapshot of slow burning proto techno in reductionist yet gutsy fashion, the tom drums in this one are fierce. On the B side we've got the (probably inadvertently) early Steve Bicknell sounding untitled cut with pummels away in loopy and hypnotic fashion and it's all about the squealing monosynth lead which really packs a punch.

Personalmote (limited 7")
Cat: FOLKDISK 001. Rel: 09 Nov 15
  1. Personalmote (4:04)
  2. Efter Stangning (4:57)
Review: Anton Klint first came to our attention thanks to a handful of EP's that he dropped on Munich's Public Possession label, but while we were already big fans of the imprint's work, it was Klint's singular take on house and disco that attracted us. This latest two-tracker comes via Sweden's IDEAL label, and the producer offers something a little darker and more experimental compared to his previous escapades. "Personalmote" is a fuzzy, broken tune that verges on house but never quite fully rids itself of a tribal, stepping kind of vibe. On the other hand, "Efter Stangning" churns and drives away at a more classic deep house level, but Klint nevertheless injects a noticeable layer of something altogether more exotic. Twisted, dystopian house beats would be the best way to some this up.

  3. Len Faki - "Rainbow Data" (ambient mix) (4:53)
Review:  Part nine of ten in Ostgut Ton's tenth various artists compilation and they're pulling out the big guns now to celebrate proceedings with a big bang. Star resident Ben Klock has taken quite a long hiatus from production but he's still got it, as shown on the tunnelling and cyclical cut "Sirens". Fellow resident and Detroit ex-pat Ryan Elliott serves up the soulful and emotive "Smith Lake" which is brilliant and reminds us of Exos or "Dead Eye" era Baby Ford. Finally resident party animal Len Faki surprises many with the ambient mix of his undisputed anthem "Rainbow Delta" and it is absolutely sublime; you can just drift away to this one, you'll see!

Review: Ben Klock revives his own Klockworks imprint with some pounding excursions into the genre we call techno. The fleeting organ melody of "Under Pressure" rests above a taught, tense drum loop, while "Voyage One" begins with the kind of thumping beat that characterises a Ben Klock DJ set, with a frenzied key structure giving the track a sense of unease and nervous anticipation, almost like Jeff Mills' Something In The Sky series with a Berghain beat. ""You" rounds off the 12" in a minimal, atmospheric undertone. Limited supply, get in quick.

Rainbow Bridge (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: JC 05. Rel: 14 Nov 16
  1. Shinagawa Sunrise (9:04)
  2. Daiba (11:54)
Following the successful reception of klodio's debut EP, the Tokyo-based producer spent the year playing shows in Japan with various upcoming artists like Fulbert and label co-founder Alixkun, and taking part in disruptive events such as Pow Wow School of Music.
When klodio decided it was time to start recording his second EP, he took a slightly different direction, going from Techno-influenced Detroit House to House-influenced Detroit Techno. "Shinagawa Sunrise" is a fast-paced retro-futuristic Jazz jam which climaxes on a fantastic sax solo by the young and talented Ilia Skibinsky. Daiba goes a step further in this Techno journey, flowing from glowing, light, syncopated chords to a dark and aggressive atmosphere, and back again to the relaxing chords.
More polished, singular, deep, and yet aggressive than "Toktroit", "Rainbow Bridge EP" brings another stone in the Asia-infused universe that the French producer is bringing to the world of electronic music.

Review: Brit in Melbourne Kloke follows up previous releases on this impressive NYC label (and sterling effort in 2014 on Sub Squared) with something different. The intense Latin percussion workout of "PHONE" sounds like Sergio Mendes on steroids in this relentless epic, while "Rhythm #1" is more restrained in its exotic execution. Jamal Moss does an impressive job as ever on the remix. His analogue hardware jam turning the track into something else completely.

  4. Mmuo Trance (5:33)
Review: Patricia Kokett's strange and exciting brand of techno is undoubtedly the sort of music that grabs your attention from the moment the needle hits the record. The previously unknown producer drop his second solo EP to date, coming through on the sublime Knekelhuis label, home to the likes of Smersh, Parrish Smith, and plenty of others who blur the lines between techno, electronica and power electronics. "Diabel" is ominous in its stride, launching an all-bleep wave of dread, while "Mmuo" is a slower, more gentle number that sways us with a pseudo-house approach. On the flip, "Serpiente" dabs into the more industrial techno framework, and "Mmuo Trance" releases a wonderfully deep and explorative piece of sound design that reminds us of Jon Hassell's outings. Excellent.

Review: The mysterious Kontal is back on Revolt with the Change In Colour EP. In the words of the artist themselves, it illustrates a wider sound spectrum than previous releases on the label. From the steely and austere main room energy of "Epigram" (which gets a great remix by good friend Developer), the cyclical and strobe-lit tension of the title track and "Reason To Believe" which provides a reliable and sturdy mixing tool by way of its droney bassline, claps on the kick and airy pads.

Review: Cosmic Resonance, the Canadian imprint operated out of Toronto, has been a revelation over the last year, coming through with releases from Hemingway and Raf Reza before discovering the talents of Korea Town Acid, who debuts here with a sublime album by the name of Mahogani Forest. With only six tunes to pick from, KTA has kept it all about quality over quantity, which we absolutely love, especially if the strain of house on offer is as warm and lush as this! From "Tite Bond" to "Mahogani Forest" on the A-side, the sounds are 4/4 and bass-heavy but still grounded in a sort of 'boogie' sensibility that renders the tunes playable to a disco-not-disco audience. There's more jazzed-out vibes on the B-side, with "Virtual Reality" and "Bubble Tease" landing some insanely broken beats to the equation. Large.
