JS 05 (reissue) (coloured vinyl 12")
Cat: JS 05. Rel: 24 Jan 17
  1. Track 1 (9:08)
  2. Track 2 (9:08)
Review: While many contemporary listeners will recognise the J.S.Zeiter name from an appearance on Meandyou alongside Herron back in 2014, the producer has been making crafty techno grooves since the late 90s. In what is now a much coveted series of Eps on his own JS, the artist carved a name for himself among the underground techno luminaries of the time, but has somehow managed to remain somewhat underrated over the years - not that those Discogs prices would entirely agree with that notion. But that's exactly why he's decided to release the much awaited 005 in the series. Much like the sounds of Basic Channel and Maurizio, "Track 1" and "Track 2" are pure, dubbed-out glory in every sense of the word, and both tunes offer something beautifully dark and pensive. Unlike the plethora of so-called 'dub-techno' that is released these days, JS Zeiter knows his stuff inside out, and this will no doubt be a breath of fresh air for fans of Dozzy or the Avian imprint.

Ophelia EP (12")
Cat: EVR 007. Rel: 13 Sep 12
  1. Vandaleur
  2. Forgotten Hauler
  3. Ophelia
Review: Starting to make diversions from his beloved $tinkworx moniker, JT Stewart makes his second outing under his own name for Greece's Echovolt label, dealing in sumptuous analogue synthesis in a strange vein somewhere between house and techno, although certainly not tech house. It's richly melodic stuff, but also detuned just enough to add some excitement and mystery to the mix. "Vandaleur" struts along with a sci-fi-horror tone, while "Forgotten Hauler" gets a bit rougher in the percussion department while the synths pound out a Detroit manifesto. "Ophelia" on the B-Side takes a more relaxed affair as the groove skips playfully and light piano and string pads define the atmosphere.

Cat: KILLEKILL 11. Rel: 26 Feb 13
  1. Sonic Criminal
  2. Pulse Catcher
  3. Earth
  4. Black Oracle
Review: Berlin's Killekill crew have seen their label go from strength to strength over the past year or so, culminating in the release of the recent Megahits compilation which saw them open their doors to a wider spectrum of artists. One was Spectral and Creme producer Tadd Mullinix, whose contribution under his JTC alias provided one of the compilation's highlights, and here he returns to the label with a full EP. "Sonic Criminal" is a hypnotic deep techno jam filled with simmering acid tones, while "Pulse Catcher" is a primal piece of mid-tempo Jak put through a rough and grubby filter. "Earth" sharpens the focus again with its high-frequency basement tones, while the EP closer "Black Oracle" combines electro rhythms with a dystopian analogue backdrop.

  2. Beta Evers - "Don't Believe It" (3:57)
  3. Beta Evers - "Endzeitvision" (3:53)
  4. SSRI - "Storage Capabilities" (7:17)
Review: Berlin's In The Dark Again does not stick to one particular style or genre of music, and this is precisely what we've loved about their output thus far. Artists such as Heinrich Dressel, Ekoplekz, and even In Aeternam Vale have appeared on the label, but number four in the series marks the arrival of a few new names. First up on the A-side is June with "Between 2 Fires", a tune that sends cold waves through metallic electro beats; this is followed by the first cut from Beta Evers, the beautifully wonky techno cut entitled "Don't Believe It". Evers is back on the B1 with "Endzeitvision", an acid-laced stomper complete with mesmerising background cinematics, while SSRI drops a whole load of cerebral sonics on his "Storage Capabilities" tune - odd, broken, and perfectly gloomy.

Green Buddha EP (limited 12")
Cat: 7TH12 016RP. Rel: 12 Dec 17
  1. Drug Me (5:40)
  2. Psalm IV (5:36)
  3. Track 3 (4:37)
  4. Track 4 (5:53)
Review: Seminal 92 jungle techno from Mark Loy: 7th Storey have restored a cult classic from Poetic Justice right here. "Drug Me" is raw spaced-aged breakbeat blueprint business while "Psalm IV" gets gritty on the pounding 4/4s with heavy paranoid pressure and vicious early UK techno gloom. "Track 3" brings us back to the hardcore with a muscular melodic arrangement that increases the intensity to dangerous psychedelic levels while "Track 4" is a nasty little darkcore creeper that hasn't dipped in its fearmongering one iota since its release 25 years ago. Immaculate work by the 7th Storey crew.

  2. End Of Love (Roy Of The Ravers remix 1) (6:43)
  3. The Shazsquatch Goes Back Into The Woods (4:49)
  4. Faxes From The Future (6:48)
Review: It's been a hot minute since Timothy J. Fairplay slipped on his Junior Fairplay guise, but he's done just that for this bleep-tastic new 12" on (Emotional) Especial. "End Of Love" is unabashed in its embrace of early Yorkshire techno tones, making a fine job of resurrecting the bleep spectre and letting it shake up the dance once more. Roy Of The Ravers is a smart choice of remixer, and he brings an off-kilter acid rub to the table in his idiosyncratic, braindance-inflected style. The B-side is equal laden with purposefully dusty dance grooves transplanted from the late 80s / early 90s, with "Faxes From The Future" hitting a particularly sharp point in its lazy breakbeat roll and the clanging harmonies of the stabs.

Omnisystem (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: TABR 041. Rel: 03 Apr 18
  1. Light/New Faith
  2. Hallowed (0.E.P)
  3. Altar [Native States] (feat Scientific Dreamz Of U)
  4. On Distant
Review: Junior Loves has previously been spotted alongside Scientific Dreamz Of U on the excellent The Dreamcode cassette for 1080p back in 2015, and now the spiritually charged producer is stepping out on SDOU-friendly label Tabernacle to impart some well-travelled rhythm science to all astral journeypeople. There's definitely a psyched-out drum circle vibe to "Light/New Faith," but it's shot through with foreboding that makes it all the more alluring. "Hallowed (0.E.P)" is a strafing exercise in space age arpeggios and eerie chords, and the Scientific one lends a hand on the thrumming cosmic engine of "Altar [Native States]."

  7. Antigravity - "Mauvais Art" (5:22)
Review: The Greek label that has since moved to Berlin, Nous, returns with a compilation of new works by their latest round-up of analogue noise merchants. Starting out with the stomping lo-fi techno of Juniper's "Movement From The Fade" or the dusty tribal trance of newcomer Fetnat's "Marbrahh", there's more underground techno delights to be discovered on the B side. Highlights here were the relentless, broken beat techno of "Headhunter" by Los Angeleno Dreams (pushing the same territory as Dream Weapons or Christopher Joseph), while Antigravity's "Mauvais Art" plunders the depths of lowdown and guttural electro in great style.

Review: Having come to light on Optimo Music, The Junto Club now kick off the Snap Crackle & Pop label with a new single that builds on their promising reputation. "Shiviana" is a perfect encapsulation of what the band are about, channelling all kinds of wave styles into their instruments but still coming off sounding contemporary and seductive at once. Khidja comes on board to remix the track, turning it into an acidic burner with a heavy dose of bombast thrown in. "Ikiryo" presents a more post punk side to The Junto Club sound, which Smagghe & Cross then buff up into a crafty electro number for the dancers.

  1. Maiden Japan (4:07)
  2. The Gold Room (4:45)
Review: The third release from Juzer aka Chicago enfant terrible Beau Wanzer and Dan Jugle. The pair first appeared on Anthony Parasole's The Corner a couple of years ago and their sophomore effort appearing on Fort Lauderdale's Dog In The Night. Let's not forget Wanzer's previous flirtations with techno as Civil Duty (with Shawn O'Sullivan) and in NJB with Steve Summers and Bookworms. On the A side we have "Maiden Japan" which is good old fashioned electro-funk conjured from unmistakably all analogue sound sources: covered in a nice sheen of dust for added authenticity. On the flip, it's a different affair altogether with the peak time warehouse stomp of "The Gold Room" calling to mind the work of Dutch legend Steve Rachmad (aka Fix/Basic Bastard) from the late 90's and early noughties. This is the second release for the newly inaugurated R=A imprint - the first coming from Los Angeles' Fizzy Veins.

  1. Boiler Room Teaser (7:58)
  2. You Stepped Right Into My Life (K Hand re-edit) (6:56)
  3. Live (4:41)
Review: Detroit techno veteran Kelli Hand returns to action with her first EP of original productions since 2015. More impressively, it's the first volume in her Project series since the tail end of the 1990s (though, as nerds will point out, Project 5 was reissued in 2014). A-side "Boiler Room Teaser" feels like a product of the late 1990s, combining as it does no-nonsense Motor City techno drums and growling, razor-sharp riffs. There's a similarly dark, booming, warehouse-friendly feel to "K.Hand Live", a house/techno hybrid full of weighty kick drums and sparkling, spacey electronics. Curiously, the EP's other track - "You Stepped Right (K.Hand Re-Edit)" - is a pitched up, slightly beefed up rework of Melba Moore disco classic "You Stepped Into My Life".

Review: After their last release under the labels Ornate Music (UK) and Finale Sessions (US), Ka One & St-Sene are back with a special Flyance Records release. REWORK: the action of redoing, correcting or rebuilding"; that is the spirit they put in this Ep with those four House music anthems of those consider today as the father figures of this music. Without sampling, replaying all the keyboards and arpeggio, they turned thoses anthems into modern acid and techno vibe. From 1989 to 2015 Ka One & St-Sene give great tribute at Lil Louis, Mr Fingers, Kerri Chandler and Laurent Garnier.

  1. Soul
  2. Armando Álvarez
  3. By The Lake (Karl M redefinition)
Review: Malmo based artist management agency now run a label. This is their third release and they've tapped the legendary Karl Axel Bissler to do the honours. "Soul" is bleepy and driving hypnotic techno in the same vein as fellow Swede Staffan Linzatti that has all the right elements: white noise splashes, reverberated percs and just enough funk in its bassline. He throws us a bit of a curveball next on the deep tribal tech house workout of "Armando Alvarez" sounding more like early Jori Hulkonnen or Nick Curly. But he gets back into the techno side of things thankfully on the flip with "By The Lake (Karl M Redefinition) another entrancing and atmospheric stomper pushing the same vibe as Ness or Claudio PRC. That's what we're talking about!

Review: Jaunt Records is celebrating 10 years of active service in fine style with this series of various artist 12"s. The Air installment features four beat scientists presenting diverse musings on deep diving techno, kicking off with the hypnotic, cyclical "Meandering Rivers" by Kaelan. JC meanwhile spices things up with the breakbeat roughness of "The Jaunt Track" before Basic Soul Unit lays the smack down with the bruising broken techno of "Escape Velocity". Blackhall & Bookless finish the EP off with the big room dub-out of "Spirit", a churning beast of a techno track that still maintains the meditative qualities of the other tracks.

Review: Longstanding Detroit deepsmith Kage returns on his brand new label Michigander. The result? Three superlative exercises in synth soul and an on-point version for later hours. "The Arc" prowls with all the string-soaked majesty of an early Rolando cut while the stringless version hits a little harder. "D Drive" jacks with a slappy bass groove while tipping a slight nod to Yazoo with its vibrant riffy ripples while "Transcending" is all about the big dubby synth washes and off-kick bass palpitations. Let's hope there'll be more to gander from Michigander very soon.

Review: Kaiser is the alias of Bari, Puglia based Gianluca Caiati; who since 2007 has released on the likes of Animal Farm, Quant and of course Glenn Wilson's esteemed Planet Rhythm imprint. For the Berlin based Voight, he now appears with these five austere exercises that have the likes of Berghain and Tresor in mind. Starting off with the heavy hypnotism of "Sogno" with its gnarly acid lead and euphoric pads supported by some seriously steely rhythms. For contrast, there's the darkly atmospheric, industrial bass exploration of "Inizio" (that will appeal to fans of more recent Downwards or Samurai Horo) until the droning and tunnelling rework of "Tempo" by Ryogo Yamamori hammers the message home: all guns blazing!

Review: Kalbata is a delightfully unpredictable fellow, one minute turning out slick tech house with Guy Gerber and the next starting a dancehall riot with Warrior Queen. His long and varied career continues following a recent spot on Optimo Trax with this first 12" on Brush & Broom, a new label that is housing some particularly straight up 4/4 jams from the prolific producer. "Obskuur" has a clue in the name, plying a trade in the kind of furtive deep techno that ekes tension out of the most ambivalent of crowds with its oh-so-slow but powerful sense of progression. "Rumoured" has a broader palette, letting undulating threads of melodic synth work slither around the subby, minimal percussion.

Review: Kalbata has turned his hand to many styles over the years, not least the excellent soundsystem explorations of Congo Beat The Drum, but on this second release for his label Brush & Broom, he's decided to fling himself into the fiery pit of acid while paying tribute to 90s motocross bikes. "Honda" is dripping with 303, punctuated by a twitchy set of drums, while "Yamaha" takes a diversion into moodier territory, letting hazy chords set the tone for an energised but defiantly heads down acid workout. "Suzuki" is a bit spicier, capturing the essence of 'up-for-it' early Trax Records but edging it into more hypnotic, looped up territory. "Toyota" finishes the EP off with an atonal bleep out with an electro undercarriage.
