Review: For reliable, jacking, and horny drum tracks, Paul Johnson's debut on the prolific Chiwax is probably the best thing since DJ Slugo's recently repressed Livin' That Ghetto Life 12". At six tracks large - three on each side - this record is a weapon for the DJ and stand out vocal cuts include "Aww Shit" and Who's Psy Is This", while for instrumental melt downs check out "Speech Impediment" and the almost Yello sounding "Relieve Me".

  4. Through The Motions (U-More remix)
Review: Laura Jones unveiled her new label Sensoramic in May with SAM and Karousel cutting the opening tape in appropriate style. For the second release Laura delivers her first EP since 2014. After taking time out to experiment in the studio and refine her style, The Why Question marks an evolution in the UK producer's output delivering two incendiary underground club cuts ably remixed by Trevino and U-More. Two veterans working under aliases, Trevino is of course better known as legendary drum 'n' bass producer Marcus Intalex who has more recently found a home for his 4/4 output on Klockworks, The Nothing Special and his own label, Birdie. U-More is Italian veteran and Berliner, Ivan Iacobucci, fresh from releasing on Apollonia and a slew of underground minimalist labels who delivers a late night acid laden afterhours workout to compliment Trevino's big room counterpart.

  2. EZY2141 (6:06)
  3. Springfield (7:24)
Review: Aussies represent up next on the legendary Cologne imprint Kompakt. Multi Culti label manager Angus Gruzman aka Dreems teams up with homeboy from Sydney Jono Ma aka Juno Mars as 'The Dreemas', get it? While the pumping adrenaline of "A Love Trance Mission From NK To 7S" may seem like something new from Gruzman; with its Italo disco arpeggio shimmering away above tight and dusty four the floor grooves, next track "EZY2141" is overwhelmingly familiar. Delving deep into the exotic with its hypnotic tribal poly-rhythms much like his releases on the aforementioned Canadian label that he's involved with. On the flip, they're back into the straight up techno side of things, it could possibly be Ma's influence, but from what we can tell his first explorations in electronic music outside of psych-rock band Jagwar Ma. So the deeply freaked out and modular sounding trance groove of "Springfield" is hard to point down to either producer, but it is indeed pretty awesome.

  4. Decompression (Nathan Jonson Rewind To 96 mix) (6:31)
Review: Canadian techno maestro Mathew Jonson burst onto the scene in a big way in the mid noughties. One of his breakout tunes was in the form of "Decompression" released on Richie Hawtin's esteemed m_nus imprint. Now the 2005 dancefloor bomb gets a series of modern revisions by an all star cast. dBridge's "Ambient Pressure remix" is even more brooding and atmospheric than the original. The cavernous sonar bleeps, gloomy pads and sharp rhythms of the original remain, except for its signature 'techstep' style sub-bass: which is replaced by a gnarly, glitched out arpeggio. Autonomic and all round UK drum and bass hero dBridge steps up next, with an 'edit' but it's actually the breakneck junglist steeper that the track has been begging to be transformed into for years: it's worth the wait! Elsewhere, fellow British Columbian and Wagon Repairman Konrad Black appears with more great music after a long hiatus: he too returning to his UK influenced roots (don't forget some of his first tunes were on the likes of Ed Rush & Optical's Virus Recordings), albeit taking his cues from the more modern post UK bass sounds on his remix of the timeless classic.

The Decompression Remixes Vol 2 (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: FE 002. Rel: 18 Jul 18
  1. Decompression (GMT remix) (6:39)
  2. Decompression (Mike Shannon re-compression mix) (6:24)
  3. Decompression (Deadbeat remix) (6:03)
  4. Decompression (Natalia Escobar Coral Caisson mix) (6:38)
Review: Last year, Freedom Engine served up a fine EP featuring contemporary reworks of Mathew Jonson's 2004 minimal techno classic "Decompression". Here, the German label serves up four more tried-and-tested interpretations. Arguably the headline attraction is the opening GMT Remix by Guy Gerber, Phil Moffa and Seth Troxler, a driving, alien-sounding techno interpretation bristling with moody bass, spacey pads, simmering strings and wonky, dark-room noises. Mike Shannon's "Re-compression Remix" is an altogether deeper - if no less wonky - revision, while Deadbeat brilliantly re-imagines the track as a slow and spaced-out chunk of future dub/bleep techno fusion. To round things off, Natalia Escobar delivers a superb ambient translation that sounds like an unreleased track from the late, great Pete Namlook.

  4. The Queen & The Real Me (5:24)
Review: Berlin's Flexxseal are back and label head honcho Christopher Joseph appears again next with the Outside The Lines EP: four servings of tough and functional analogue driven techno bangers that call to mind the zeitgeist on mid 90's techno. On the A side we start out with the haunting and post apocalyptic soundscape of "Continue To Nothing" then the hiss, clatter and boom of the uncompromising banger "Outside The Lines" which is reminiscent of early Luke Slater. On the flip the driving cyclical mayhem of "Post Traumatic" is totally epic and reminds us of classic James Ruskin. Finally he hammers the message home with industrial body basher "The Queen & The Real Me" with its violent broken beat, grinding arpeggio and distorted industrial vocals raising hell in a big way.

  3. Contagion (5:30)
Review: So far, the best part of Jouem's career seems to have been shaped by the Mojuba imprint, a label that rarely ever puts in something below excellent, and one whose label heads curate diligently. The shady artist returns with the fifth instalment of the series, and "Anomalous Diffusion" kicks it off with a deep, meandering pulse that showcases the best of what dubby house has to offer; on the flip, "Kazumi Cycle" strips the whole amalgam down to a mystical and pensive whirlpool of fuzzy bass waves and slow drum machine beats that are wrapped in a misty fog of sonics. "Contagion" is our favourite piece, its subtle addition of semi breaks at the core give it something special, and place it a step above any other recent house turn we've heard. This is some deep gear - we can't wait for the sixth chapter!

Ophelia EP (12")
Cat: EVR 007. Rel: 13 Sep 12
  1. Vandaleur
  2. Forgotten Hauler
  3. Ophelia
Review: Starting to make diversions from his beloved $tinkworx moniker, JT Stewart makes his second outing under his own name for Greece's Echovolt label, dealing in sumptuous analogue synthesis in a strange vein somewhere between house and techno, although certainly not tech house. It's richly melodic stuff, but also detuned just enough to add some excitement and mystery to the mix. "Vandaleur" struts along with a sci-fi-horror tone, while "Forgotten Hauler" gets a bit rougher in the percussion department while the synths pound out a Detroit manifesto. "Ophelia" on the B-Side takes a more relaxed affair as the groove skips playfully and light piano and string pads define the atmosphere.

Review: Berlin's Killekill crew have seen their label go from strength to strength over the past year or so, culminating in the release of the recent Megahits compilation which saw them open their doors to a wider spectrum of artists. One was Spectral and Creme producer Tadd Mullinix, whose contribution under his JTC alias provided one of the compilation's highlights, and here he returns to the label with a full EP. "Sonic Criminal" is a hypnotic deep techno jam filled with simmering acid tones, while "Pulse Catcher" is a primal piece of mid-tempo Jak put through a rough and grubby filter. "Earth" sharpens the focus again with its high-frequency basement tones, while the EP closer "Black Oracle" combines electro rhythms with a dystopian analogue backdrop.

Review: It's been a hot minute since Timothy J. Fairplay slipped on his Junior Fairplay guise, but he's done just that for this bleep-tastic new 12" on (Emotional) Especial. "End Of Love" is unabashed in its embrace of early Yorkshire techno tones, making a fine job of resurrecting the bleep spectre and letting it shake up the dance once more. Roy Of The Ravers is a smart choice of remixer, and he brings an off-kilter acid rub to the table in his idiosyncratic, braindance-inflected style. The B-side is equal laden with purposefully dusty dance grooves transplanted from the late 80s / early 90s, with "Faxes From The Future" hitting a particularly sharp point in its lazy breakbeat roll and the clanging harmonies of the stabs.

Review: Junior Loves has previously been spotted alongside Scientific Dreamz Of U on the excellent The Dreamcode cassette for 1080p back in 2015, and now the spiritually charged producer is stepping out on SDOU-friendly label Tabernacle to impart some well-travelled rhythm science to all astral journeypeople. There's definitely a psyched-out drum circle vibe to "Light/New Faith," but it's shot through with foreboding that makes it all the more alluring. "Hallowed (0.E.P)" is a strafing exercise in space age arpeggios and eerie chords, and the Scientific one lends a hand on the thrumming cosmic engine of "Altar [Native States]."

Review: It's been a while since we last heard from Juniper, the Manchester-based duo who showed much promise with early outings on Underground Quality and the like. Having previously popped up on a various artists 12", they return to the ever-essential meandyou with a strong statement of intent, packing five tracks into an EP that presents their subversive style immaculately. "Indigo Children" is a head-turning cut that fuses uptempo Motor City style electro and techno with industrial tones, while "Life Source Negative" switches stance for a beautiful, craftily constructed drift into woozy deep house. Every track is noteworthy on this release, balancing immediacy and warmth against experimental textures in a way that sits very comfortably on meandyou.

Review: The Greek label that has since moved to Berlin, Nous, returns with a compilation of new works by their latest round-up of analogue noise merchants. Starting out with the stomping lo-fi techno of Juniper's "Movement From The Fade" or the dusty tribal trance of newcomer Fetnat's "Marbrahh", there's more underground techno delights to be discovered on the B side. Highlights here were the relentless, broken beat techno of "Headhunter" by Los Angeleno Dreams (pushing the same territory as Dream Weapons or Christopher Joseph), while Antigravity's "Mauvais Art" plunders the depths of lowdown and guttural electro in great style.

Review: Having come to light on Optimo Music, The Junto Club now kick off the Snap Crackle & Pop label with a new single that builds on their promising reputation. "Shiviana" is a perfect encapsulation of what the band are about, channelling all kinds of wave styles into their instruments but still coming off sounding contemporary and seductive at once. Khidja comes on board to remix the track, turning it into an acidic burner with a heavy dose of bombast thrown in. "Ikiryo" presents a more post punk side to The Junto Club sound, which Smagghe & Cross then buff up into a crafty electro number for the dancers.

Review: The third release from Juzer aka Chicago enfant terrible Beau Wanzer and Dan Jugle. The pair first appeared on Anthony Parasole's The Corner a couple of years ago and their sophomore effort appearing on Fort Lauderdale's Dog In The Night. Let's not forget Wanzer's previous flirtations with techno as Civil Duty (with Shawn O'Sullivan) and in NJB with Steve Summers and Bookworms. On the A side we have "Maiden Japan" which is good old fashioned electro-funk conjured from unmistakably all analogue sound sources: covered in a nice sheen of dust for added authenticity. On the flip, it's a different affair altogether with the peak time warehouse stomp of "The Gold Room" calling to mind the work of Dutch legend Steve Rachmad (aka Fix/Basic Bastard) from the late 90's and early noughties. This is the second release for the newly inaugurated R=A imprint - the first coming from Los Angeles' Fizzy Veins.
