Review: Operating out of the same Netherlands scene that fosters the likes of Roger Gerressen, Alex Jansen can be found contributing to the Dilated Pupils project amongst other ventures that orbit around the city of Nijmegen. On this release for UGold he takes his predilection for minimal house to the next level with some patient and subtle studies that reward the attentive listener. "Aexn I O" and "Ha Isle" in particular drift off into mystical territory where delay and reverb rules the day and the beats fall subtly. Elsewhere though there are plenty of meat n' potatoes grooves to be enjoyed across the three parts of "Aexn II", which thrusts out an uptempo beat offset by calming pads.

  4. Blue Vulva & The Electronic Crooner - "Vulbitch Bazaar"
Review: Minuendo keep things interesting on this latest various artists 12", primarily focusing on Owen Jay and Brian James on the A side for two tracks of adventurous experimentation on the wild frontier of minimal house music. The wobbly synth running through "Niko's Groove" is a real head turner, while "Imagery" nudges the grand tradition of dub house into a new pocket of ambience that draws you in immediately. There's a lovely, classic deep house joint from Untitled called "Seafood", and then Blue Vulva & The Electronic Crooner completely flip the script on the B2 with rowdy acid burner "Vulbitch Bazaar".

  2. Molegrip - "Kaorumba" (5:31)
  3. CMNT - "Phonk" (5:15)
  4. Cyan 341 - "Soft Device" (5:58)
Review: The Cement label starts with a bang, headed up by Owen Jay who ditches his usual sleek house gear for some grubbier techno fare (but not at the expense of the groove). His "Stabs" is a perfect slice of dungeon techno, with ample textural depth to stand out in the mix. Molegrip takes a slower, creeping dub approach on "Kaorumba", while CMNT lets a little colour into the mix with some submerged, strafing Motor City stabs over a reduced techno tick, and then Cyan 341 brings the closest thing to a house beat on "Soft Device", fleshing the track out with lingering notes and an overall melancholic mood.

Review: Our first release on is/was comes courtesy of Detroit's own Dwayne Jensen. For those in the know, Dwayne requires no introduction. Behind the decks since the 80's, Dwayne has carved himself a spot in the history books of Detroit house and techno. He's equally accomplished in the studio with releases on KMS, Dockside, Landed and his own Fathom Records imprint. This 4 tracker sees Dwayne in top form with 3 straight ahead, swung and stabby house tracks and 1 slow burner for the after hours.

  1. Space (7:13)
  2. Answer (6:13)
  3. South (6:46)
  4. Encke (6:27)
Review: Frenchman Julian Jeweil can be counted on for absolute peak time weaponry and his new offering on Drumcode is no exception. The tunnelling trance induction of dynamic opener "Space" sets the scene right away, and from here prepare to surrender to the void! "Answer" boosts the adrenaline levels immediately on this pummeling assault to the senses, assisted by some intense dub chords for dramatic effect. On the flip, "South" gets back to the program with yet another strobe-lit affair full of druggy risers and massive drops galore. Finally "Encke" provides something definitely in tune with the Drumcode sound, on this bleepy and hypnotic DJ tool which will have a broad appeal to a wide selection of techno DJs.

  1. Rolling (6:58)
  2. Venice (6:14)
  3. Blue (6:57)
  4. Traffic (6:19)
Review: After building his reputation via releases on Plus 8 and M_nus, amongst others, Julian Jeweil has secured a big-money move to Drumcode. As you'd expect, all four tracks on this first label outing tend towards the forthright, with title track "Rolling" - a sweaty fusion of booming arpeggio bass, pounding kick-drums, foreboding riffs, metallic hits and drum machine handclap fills - setting the agenda. The "build and drop techno" blueprint is explored further on "Venice", before the experienced Frenchman opts for some full-throttle antics on "Blue". Sensing listeners need a little bit of a breather, he dips the tempo a little on "Traffic", which boasts some deliciously psychedelic acid lines.

  2. Ontal - "Mudflow" (5:11)
  3. BMSK - "Revma" (7:30)
  4. Nemmett - "Claim Your Way" (5:30)
Review: The Athens-based Pi collective has so far used their Modal Analysis Records-backed Pi Electronics imprint to deliver a quintet of decidedly dystopian experimental techno EPs. You'll find more fuzzy fare on Variable, the label's first attempt at a compilation style, multi-artist extravaganza. Former Napalm Death member JK Flesh kicks things off with the mind-altering analogue electronics and industrial-tinged techno rhythms of "Chelmsley Wood", before Ontal drags us further into end-of-days techno territory via the layered percussion, distorted electronics and bludgeoning beats of "Mudflow". Turn to the flip for the throbbing arpeggio lines, fuzzy guitar riffs and lo-fi beats of BMSK's "Revma" and the relentless assault on the senses that is Nemmett's "Claim Your Way".

Ricochet (12")
Cat: TTT 062. Rel: 28 Nov 17
  1. Ricochet (10:22)
  2. ...And Then Leave (Brian Kage mix) (7:47)
Review: Here is the long awaited third release from John FM. He is a 24 year old rising star from Detroit who follows up two well received EP's on Omar S' esteemed FXHE records - with yet more dusty machine funk for The Trilogy Tapes. He's found a fitting home on TTT, you can really hear it on the A side epic "Ricochet" as it pumps away beneath the lo-fi tape saturation, all hypnotic arpeggios and rusty drum patterns galore. On the flip, it's a classic Motor City affair from the first wave on the rather Derrick May sounding "..And Then Leave" which is in fact remixed by local legend Brian Kage of Michigander and Reference fame. It's a great one packed full of emotive church organs, razor sharp synth melodies and evocative pads. Follows up a great release on the label in the from of Omar S' collaboration with Los Angeles based songstress Nite Jewel on the wonderful "Confess To U".

Review: For reliable, jacking, and horny drum tracks, Paul Johnson's debut on the prolific Chiwax is probably the best thing since DJ Slugo's recently repressed Livin' That Ghetto Life 12". At six tracks large - three on each side - this record is a weapon for the DJ and stand out vocal cuts include "Aww Shit" and Who's Psy Is This", while for instrumental melt downs check out "Speech Impediment" and the almost Yello sounding "Relieve Me".

Review: Laura Jones unveiled her new label Sensoramic in May with SAM and Karousel cutting the opening tape in appropriate style. For the second release Laura delivers her first EP since 2014. After taking time out to experiment in the studio and refine her style, The Why Question marks an evolution in the UK producer's output delivering two incendiary underground club cuts ably remixed by Trevino and U-More. Two veterans working under aliases, Trevino is of course better known as legendary drum 'n' bass producer Marcus Intalex who has more recently found a home for his 4/4 output on Klockworks, The Nothing Special and his own label, Birdie. U-More is Italian veteran and Berliner, Ivan Iacobucci, fresh from releasing on Apollonia and a slew of underground minimalist labels who delivers a late night acid laden afterhours workout to compliment Trevino's big room counterpart.

  2. EZY2141 (6:06)
  3. Springfield (7:24)
Review: Aussies represent up next on the legendary Cologne imprint Kompakt. Multi Culti label manager Angus Gruzman aka Dreems teams up with homeboy from Sydney Jono Ma aka Juno Mars as 'The Dreemas', get it? While the pumping adrenaline of "A Love Trance Mission From NK To 7S" may seem like something new from Gruzman; with its Italo disco arpeggio shimmering away above tight and dusty four the floor grooves, next track "EZY2141" is overwhelmingly familiar. Delving deep into the exotic with its hypnotic tribal poly-rhythms much like his releases on the aforementioned Canadian label that he's involved with. On the flip, they're back into the straight up techno side of things, it could possibly be Ma's influence, but from what we can tell his first explorations in electronic music outside of psych-rock band Jagwar Ma. So the deeply freaked out and modular sounding trance groove of "Springfield" is hard to point down to either producer, but it is indeed pretty awesome.

  2. Decompression (Mike Shannon re-compression mix) (6:24)
  3. Decompression (Deadbeat remix) (6:03)
  4. Decompression (Natalia Escobar Coral Caisson mix) (6:38)
Review: Last year, Freedom Engine served up a fine EP featuring contemporary reworks of Mathew Jonson's 2004 minimal techno classic "Decompression". Here, the German label serves up four more tried-and-tested interpretations. Arguably the headline attraction is the opening GMT Remix by Guy Gerber, Phil Moffa and Seth Troxler, a driving, alien-sounding techno interpretation bristling with moody bass, spacey pads, simmering strings and wonky, dark-room noises. Mike Shannon's "Re-compression Remix" is an altogether deeper - if no less wonky - revision, while Deadbeat brilliantly re-imagines the track as a slow and spaced-out chunk of future dub/bleep techno fusion. To round things off, Natalia Escobar delivers a superb ambient translation that sounds like an unreleased track from the late, great Pete Namlook.

  4. Decompression (Nathan Jonson Rewind To 96 mix) (6:31)
Review: Canadian techno maestro Mathew Jonson burst onto the scene in a big way in the mid noughties. One of his breakout tunes was in the form of "Decompression" released on Richie Hawtin's esteemed m_nus imprint. Now the 2005 dancefloor bomb gets a series of modern revisions by an all star cast. dBridge's "Ambient Pressure remix" is even more brooding and atmospheric than the original. The cavernous sonar bleeps, gloomy pads and sharp rhythms of the original remain, except for its signature 'techstep' style sub-bass: which is replaced by a gnarly, glitched out arpeggio. Autonomic and all round UK drum and bass hero dBridge steps up next, with an 'edit' but it's actually the breakneck junglist steeper that the track has been begging to be transformed into for years: it's worth the wait! Elsewhere, fellow British Columbian and Wagon Repairman Konrad Black appears with more great music after a long hiatus: he too returning to his UK influenced roots (don't forget some of his first tunes were on the likes of Ed Rush & Optical's Virus Recordings), albeit taking his cues from the more modern post UK bass sounds on his remix of the timeless classic.
