No Sleep (12")
Cat: HOTLINE 014. Rel: 17 Jul 17
  1. No Sleep (4:26)
  2. No Sleep (Peder Mannerfelt remix) (6:04)
Review: No sleep for the wicked; Bristol Bandulu man Hi5ghost adds to Hotline's blazing fire with this singular and somewhat brutal escapade. Trappy kicks, halloween humanizations, treacle subs and a wavy bass hook that weaves and bobs in a grimey style, this one hits the chest hard. Remix-wise Hodge's Swedish affiliate Pedder Mannerfelt adds a harder step and technoid energy to proceedings for added bite. Sweet dreams.

  2. Blacklash (Andrejko edit) (6:07)
  3. Blacklash (Subjected edit) (6:34)
  4. Blacklash (Mistake Made edit) (6:20)
Review: Subjected's ever-ominous Vault Series kicks off the new year with a predictably banging EP made, of course, of high-powered techno! As per usual, it's a collaborative affair, as four artists take on "Backlash" from Hidden Criterion Of Truth, twisting and re-shaping it into some dangerous quarters. Sawlin's nasty, out-your-chest version is the bees-knees of techno, with its blasting bass knocking everything sideways, while Andrejko's remix heads into much deeper, gloomier territories for those wishing to take a peek into the other side of the spectrum. Main man Subjected wastes no time in making things as cavernous as humanely possible with his whirlpool cut, and Mistake Made's edit strips everything back to a thumping kick, distant horns, and some utterly grainy sonics for you to rub your teeth together.

  2. Ngly & Exterminador - "Broken Flowers" (7:06)
  3. DJ Nephil - "Codex" (4:47)
  4. Exterminador - "Alien Landscapes" (4:48)
Review: In some ways, And Silently Vanish Away is an odd title for an EP packed with tracks that linger long in the memory. Certainly, electro heads will appreciate the heavy 808 hits, droning bass and fluttering, deep space electronics of Exterminador's brilliant "Alien Soundscapes", not to mention the trippy, delay-laden vocal samples, warped hardware melodies and scuttling drum machine rhythms of NGLY and Exterminador's "Broken Flowers". We're big fans, too, of Hinode's bustling, razor-sharp opener "Mission4" - the kind of track that would leap out of a DJ mix and send you rushing online to find out its identity - and the fuzzy, dust-encrusted techno hum of DJ Nephil's hypnotic "Codex".

  3. Fragment (5:16)
  4. Zulu Tribe (6:24)
Review: Hot Glaswegian imprint Dixon Avenue Basement Jams follows up great releases by local lad Big Miz, VernoN and the controversial Marquis Hawkes with this terrific effort by Hissman aka Fabio Monesi. The Italian DJ and producer is founder of Wilson Records and Hardmoon London. On the Revenge EP, Hissman serves up roughed up and dusted down techno jams on the lo-fi tip, as heard on the hypnotic night drive of "Forest Wave". There's also the noisy heads-down space journey of "Fragment" that bleeds through the other side of all the tape distortion and finally the relentless old school euphoria of "Zulu Tribe".

10 Years Of Jaunt: Sea (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: JR 007.1. Rel: 11 Dec 17
  1. Hiver - "Itria"
  2. Artefakt - "Wanderings"
  3. Hinode - "Vision"
  4. Region - "Cosmic"
Review: Jaunt Records' 10 year celebrations are spanning a series of 12"s that feature a broad spectrum of artists searching for the ultimate deep techno fix. The four contenders that occupy this Sea release all have their own agenda, but they sit together perfectly. Hiver weaves illustrious pads in between nimble electro drums and bubbling acid bass, while Artefakt creates eerie, fractured acid meanderings to send a shiver down your spine. Hinode does some deft break choppage to create a dreamy trip for the up all night crew, and then Region rolls the record out on an emotive tip while keeping the rhythm section pumped up for the floor.

  1. Swing For The Fences (5:12)
  2. Aomame (5:34)
  3. Medway (5:34)
Review: Bristol scene stalwart Hodge returns with yet more fascinating techno/industrial derivatives on his new EP for Hemlock and follows up a great release with Peder Mannerfelt, not to mention usual suspects such as Livity Sound and No Corner. "Aomame" is greyscale warehouse techno reminiscent of Marcel Dettmann's late noughties output and will devastate dancefloors as far away as Berlin. On the flip, he saves the best for last on slow burner "Medway" which is purpose built for the rave, complete with its massive siren which soon leads way to hissing junkyard rhythms and a bleep bassline. More great work from one of the most singular artists, hybridising techno music into new forms.

Amor Fati (12")
Cat: 399 YTIVIL. Rel: 14 Oct 15
  1. Amor Fati (Peverelist remix) (6:13)
  2. Tilikum (Hodge remix) (6:07)
Review: Ahead of the release of the Ytivil Dnuos compilation, Peverelist has opted to turn out a 12" that revisits two tracks from the recent past and sheds some fresh light on them. The label boss himself takes "Amor Fati" by Hodge to task, and turns out a delicately poised but satisfyingly weighty version replete with twinkling synth lines and jagged rhythmic incantations. Hodge meanwhile gets to have some fun with Bruce's "Tilikum", and weaves an emotional techno variation out of the component parts that stands amongst his most impassioned works to date, thanks in no small part to the heart-rending sweeps of chord that blanket the peak of the track.

Stand Up (Pangaea mix) (1-sided 12") (1 per customer)
Cat: SALSBMG 08. Rel: 05 Dec 17
  1. Stand Up (Pangaea mix) (5:48)
Review: If you've been out and about this summer, there's a fair chance that you'll have danced hard to Pangaea's fine remix of Loleatta Holloway's "Stand Up", a gospel-influenced screamer that was repeatedly sampled by house producers in the mid 1990s. Pangaea's version first appeared on his killer, double A-side "2 Remixes" white label back in August, and here gets an official Salsoul Records release. It's amongst the producer's most potent revisions to date, with Holloway's brilliant vocal rising above a tough-as-teak fusion of speaker-troubling sub-bass, clap-happy, two-step drum machine beats and layered tribal percussion. Heavy and carnival-friendly, it's quickly turning into one of the dance anthems of 2017.

  1. Melody 4 Your Mind (7:42)
  2. You Belong 2 (8:49)
Review: Jimmy Billingham's HOLOVR project has grown into something of an essential listen for us these days, and we're not shy to say that we think this guy is one of the few remaining artists who are truly at the 'outside' of the house music spectrum. Many attempt to sound loose, explorative and lo-fi, but this guy has just cracked the formula. After an excellent string of appearances for the likes of Opal Tapes and, more recently, House Of Traps' Firecracker Recordings stable, the artist joins Bristol's Happy Skull imprint with two supremely ethereal slices of kinetic electronic waves. "Melody 4 Your Mind" is not all ambience, however, and it's flurry of melodies are actually locked into a tight percussive roll thanks to those bass drums travelling way down below; it's an endlessly wondrous affair, and one with a distinctive capability to appeal across the dance world. On the B-side, things get wilder with "You Belong 2", a buzzing, acid-laden dance abstraction that takes the whole acid house strain to a new and untrodden sort of territory. Recommended!

Tracks & Traps (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: PB 002. Rel: 31 Oct 16
  1. The Void (3:27)
  2. Slagwise (6:14)
  3. Acied Bummer (5:44)
  4. Quite Vicious (7:01)
  5. Serenity Wars (6:38)
Review: It's not all minimal techno in Romania, as the P-Balans crew ably demonstrate on this second release from local hero The Holy Fix. The synths come down thick and gloopy on "The Void" before "Slagwise" ramps up the horror tones with a perfect distillation of what makes a soundtrack pop off. This is nightmarish disco music in the vein of Maiovvi and the like, and it's delivered impeccably. There is a greater focus on club tones amongst the atmospheric FX on Tracks & Traps though, with "Quite Vicious" in particular conjuring up a thrilling, madcap romp through buffed up disco techno.

  3. Borusiade - "Marsch"
  4. Utopus - "Re-Velvet"
Review: P-Balans is a new imprint in the Future Nuggets emerging constellation. A tehnodelia ramification within the Bucharest electronic scene that will host rising names like Khidja and Borusiade while introducing new characters like The Holy Fix (Camil Dumitrescu, co-member of Delusion Men) and Utopus (Ion D, producer of Steaua de Mare, Raze de Soare, Anahore?ii among others) already featured on "Sounds on the Unheard from Romania vol. 2". Keeping the same strategies of fusion and diffusion as Future Nuggets, P-Balans will explore the space traversal to techno, entering and exiting the dark halls of the club through multiple doors.

  1. The Greatest Dancer (4:56)
  2. Dancer (7:11)
Review: ** Repress For The Hood Fans ** Emboldened by the reception to his overlooked and revisited Floorplan project, Mr Robert Hood turns to a track of a similar nature for the latest release in the M Plant Perpetual Masters series. The main slinky hook from Sister Sledge's "He's The Greatest Dancer" may have been subsequently bastardized by Mr Will Jiggy Smith, but Hood's minimal sampling of the same source on the 1991 track "The Greatest Dancer" must have sounded thrilling then. It still does today, remastered and is complemented on the flip by "Dancer", a new Hood jam that is as close to outright disco without losing that trademark Detroit grit as you can get.
