  3. Sail Over The Eastern Horizon (Blind Observatory remix) (8:17)
Review: Gravitational 003 features two spaced out ambient cuts from Tbilisi based sound artist Hanker. The highly advanced and introspective A side jams "Sail Over The Eastern Horizon" and "Waxing Gibbous" are a must for all sci-fi soundtrack enthusiasts out there. Awash in trippy modular synth textures and emotive analogue strings and altogether creating a soulful, retro-futurist bliss to travel without moving. Comes with a stellar Blind Observatory treatment on the flip side, which will take you deep into the stratosphere on his finely tuned hypnotic techno epic. Comes with a printed 21x21cm artwork.

  4. Volcanics
Review: Josefine Hellstrom Hansson's debut track "Water Cave" on HMWLA received ADJ support from AIlario Alicante, Robert Babicz, Piemont, Slam, Paco Osuna, Horse Meat Disco, Nick Warren, Gabriel Ananda and Ame. Now the Malmo-based producer and DJ readies a three track techno / house EP on HMWL's vinyl sublabel Heartbreak Records. On A-side alongside "Water Cave" Josefine offers a peak hour techno weapon called "Sensus". On B-side we find the smooth melodic "Volcanics" at 118 BPM while fellow swede Martinez deconstructs Sensus into a jazzy, mellow piece of minimal tech.

  2. Josh Wink - "Dame Deep" (6:30)
  3. Alien Rain - "Contact" (5:24)
  4. Bloody Mary - "Mono" (5:35)
Review: Bloody Mary's Dame Music imprint has long been a reliable source of forthright peak-time fare. There's naturally more to be found on The Melting Point Volume 2, a belated follow-up to a mini-compilation released at the tail end of 2017. Remarkably, the A-side boasts cuts from two heavy-hitters of the 1990s. Hardfloor kick things off with a typically boisterous, mind-altering acid workout in their inimitable style ("Thisishowwedo"), while Josh Wink wraps undulating TB-303 lines around beautiful melodies and dreamy pads on the luscious "Dame Deep". Over on the flipside Alien Rain slams down a ridiculously heavy chunk of foreboding acid techno ("Contact"), before Bloody Mary fittingly rounds things off via the classic Chicago acid-jack of "Mono".

  5. Straight Outta Horrington (SR Dark Descent remix) (5:23)
Review: The man behind Tremors and Emetic Records, British producer Martyn Hare has been a purveyor of industrial/acidic techno since 2001. He steps up to the plate next for Edinburgh based RIOT Radio, run by Nomad and Neil Templar. They have previously served up editions by the likes of The Horrorist, Subhead and Jerome Hill: which gives you a pretty strong idea of where these guys are coming from. From the raw and bombastic power of "My Illusions" featuring howls and wails through layers of distortion, atop of a frenzy of furious beats. It then gets a rework by the Aufnahme + Wiedergabe affiliated Codex Empire, who takes the track into austere and pitch black territory. On the flip, you're treated to the honour of hearing three versions of "Straight Outta Horrington" - but it's all about SR Metal & Bang's contorted industrial perspective which drags you into the lowest depths of hell.

Cat: FER 310. Rel: 30 Apr 18
  1. Tears (7:57)
  2. Inner Cycles (6:21)
  3. Arthropod (6:14)
Review: Having only previously appeared on various artist releases in the past, Darren Harris gets his first full release on Ferox - a fine place for this promising techno talent to stretch his legs. There's a recognisable Ferox shimmer to "Tears" on the A side, using myriad layers in the mix for a full-bodied sound without sacrificing depth. "Inner Cycles" is a more stripped back affair, while "Arthropod" ditches the dancefloor in favour of a chill out room headspace, but all the tracks share the same ingredients of clean, thoughtfully programmed beats and synth lines that hark back to the good old days.

Voyager 1 (12")
Cat: VYGR 1. Rel: 19 Sep 18
  1. Neutron Capture (6:32)
  2. Lftrr (6:06)
Review: Melbourne's Andy Hart is known for heading up the Voyage imprint, which over the last few years has pursued the many shades of deep house with releases by the likes of Harvey Sutherland, Urulu and Youandewan. Here he inaugurates his new Voyager sublabel, which sees a noticeable change of tune. On "Neutron Capture" he delivers a slow burning deep space transmission aboard the acid express, while the functional B side cut "Lftrr" is a dubby and hypnotic techno jam suited to heads-down moments in dank warehouse spaces. If this is a sign of things to come for Hart's new outlet, expect a string of club ready and dancefloor orientated cuts.

  1. Sostanze (8:04)

  3. Atayalic (6:34)
  4. Ururu (7:25)
Review: Prolific L.I.E.S. cohort Gunnar Haslam inaugurates the Kavalanic Languages label with some of his sinewy, head-twisting hardware techno machinations, showing us just how to make militant techno as thrilling as possible and leaving ample room for experimental weirdness as well. Opening track "Sostanze" is a taut and wiry beast that will lay waste to mild-mannered crowds, clubs and DJs, while "Atayalic" ramps up the industrial influences for a scary-in-a-good-way romp through evilest techno. "Ururu" is less malevolent but no less kinetically charged, firing off a wealth of pinging percussive synth tones that sound rather modular in nature. Beatless experiment "Ialysas" is no slouch either, pinging out unsettling tones of a discordant nature and creating something quite compelling in the process.

  5. We Only Want Tragedy
  6. Sea Shore Acid
Review: Before Helena Hauff put her name to recorded material for Werkdiscs and PAN last year and incurred the sneering wrath of a thousand keyboard heroes, she was honing her craft as a Sunday evening selector at Hamburg's Golden Pudel. If you've attended her birds and other instruments night at the venue or listened to any mixes from Hauff - we recommend the 2011 submission for the Modyfier series - and you'll hear her slip in at least one or two cuts from the Bunker back catalogue. All of which ensures her debut on the affiliated Panzerkreuz label makes perfect sense and acts as a perfect riposte to those doubting her blossoming production skills. Commencing with the superbly titled "Spirals of Smoke Drifting from Soot Stained Chimneys", the six track Return To Disorder EP demonstrates Hauff's productions are forever teetering on the brink of all out chaos, with this sense of tension crucial. Both "Message from Filippo" and "Blast" are particularly brutal highlights!

  4. Gift (4:07)
Review: The seemingly unstoppable rise of Helena Hauff continues apace. After previously shining on Ninja Tune's Actress-helmed Werk Discs offshoot, the Hamburg-based DJ/producer has now graduated to the parent label. As usual, there's much to enjoy throughout, from the punchy drum machine percussion, tumbling synthesizer melodies and foreboding chords of opener "Nothing Is What I Know" and thrillingly intense, end-of-days techno jam "Do You Really Think Like That", to the lo-fi, intergalactic brilliance of closer "Gift". Perhaps most impressive, though, is "Continuez Mon Enfant Vous Serez Traite En Consequence", a thrillingly wonky trip into dark, acid-fired electronica. In a word: essential.

Review: Haunted Doorbell are Timothy J. Fairplay and Matilda Tristram who released 'Xylophone' together last year on Astro Lab Recordings. Picking up where Xylophone left off 'Unconnected thoughts on jacking' is four tracks of naive melodies, rough slamjack drums, and new age atmospheres. 'Starclash' kicks off side A, with its dramatic arpeggios and SID chip crashes, Techno to soundtrack the Saturday night laser show at the planetarium. Following is 'A night of adventure' with its eastern scales and washy broken chorus unit hiss. On side B we have 'Beautiful Sheffield' - an ode to electronic music's (possibly) most important British city and the title track rounds of the EP - house music for listening to while looking out to sea.

Review: Here is the second vinyl only instalment from FarFromNormal records, with a fantastic 4 track EP from the young upcoming producer Jamie Haus, This record hold's 3 original tracks from Jamie and a amazing remix from the young Romanian Groovesh. This record has a totally different vibe compared to the labels first release with a much heavier techno roll. "Mattur" is a good example of this, whilst "Inter" finds Jamie Haus on a much darker, dub vibe. "Meiose" Is packed with a fantastic rolling kick with atmospheric noises in the back, whilst the Groovesh remix comes with that brilliant Romanian touch that everyone is asking for.

  3. Face Down (7:37)
  4. Half Dull (7:37)
Review: Ismail Genc has been making some pretty killer techno under the name Havantepe, and we're particularly into his style of dance music because it goes back to the roots of the genre, straying close to the 'dub' end of the spectrum that was pioneered by the likes of Basic Channel. However, tunes like the opening "The Hollow Ghost" has enough drive at its core to render it playable even in the middle of a peak-time set, with the same going for the relatively more somber melodies of "Wandering Through Crowds". "Face Down" is a bubbling techno melter with a rough beat pattern and a bouncy bassline, whereas "Half Dull" lashes out subtle waves of 303 glory from every angle. A tight, masterfully executed EP.

  5. Hunting Lodge - "De Omnibus Dubitandum" (Gotshell remix) (5:35)
Review: Contort Yourself continues to explore the crossover between decrepit 80s industrial and the modern artists drawing inspiration from those heady, experimental times, and the results are as thrilling as ever. Haydee's "No Gouvernance" is a brutal charge of drums and distorted yelps, while 1983 jam "De Omnibus Dubitandum" by Hunting Lodge fuses layers of distortion and proto acid with live bass and brittle drums. Catriel lays out a sinister but seductive message on "Nbdymksmefeellowlikeudo", Giant Swan bring their raucous avant-techno styles to "Dare" and then Gotshell remix Hunting Lodge into a thunderous industrial techno charge.

Review: William J.Youngman's Headless Horseman project has created a new and exciting techno sound that was only an offshoot of EBM and industrial in years past. Stepping out of his own imprint, the dark horseman lands on Tommy Four Seven's excellent 47 label, tearing through the speakers from the get-go thanks to the toxic sounds of "Revelation", and the even nastier sway of "Concussion". Metallic and hard-nosed in absolutely every way, "Locust" follows up on that with a menacing pounce of beats and cavernous bass, while "Gravity" breaks the techno groove for something much more in line with the likes of Powell's Diagonal output. Big boy sounds.

  4. State Of Induced Hibernation (5:06)
Review: Antonio Marini aka Healing Force Project is back with the Tranhumanism EP on Ambiwa. Starting out with the ever mysterious "Methodical Ear", it's more of the same later on "Sinapsi Sonora" which like the previously mentioned track sounds like the dusty and emotive deepness of early Sound Signature via the tough and rusty swing of fellow Italians Relative; a nice touch indeed. He then gives us the brooding and hypnotic "Shadow Manipulation Of The Mind" awash in delay drenched organs and skeletal vintage drum machine flair. But the fierce yet restrained functionalism of "State Of Induced Hibernation" with its near tribal moments supported by a series of exotic and mindbending drones is pure bliss. We'll say it again: Marini is undoubtedly one of the most underrated producers in techno at the moment!

Review: Italy's Antonio Marini last came through on Wicked Bass in 2016, and this new EP for his own On Board Music marks the artist's first release of 2017. We'd been waiting impatiently. Like he often does, Marini appears alongside and strange and wonderful blend of mystical sonics that seem to possess to tangible source and, by that, we mean that the sounds seem to have been made by Mother Earth herself. For example, the subtly acidic harmonies of "Abduction" breathe life into the rest of the sparse beat formula that surrounds them, with the following "Harmony Of The Spheres" similarly crafting a wonderful bed of organic melodies which come together into one glorious bundle of sound. On the B-side, "Alternative Currents" forms a majestic wave of improvised percussion knots and blurry cosmic rays, while "Persec City" jazzes up the mood with some very 'free' movements, and "Seven Transmutations" ties the EP to a close with a distant, opaque cocktail of classic Healing Force vibes. Wonderful stuff, as always.

Review: Australian label Hole In The Sky pride themselves on 'releasing the unusual'. That means never sticking to the same thing, and always, repeat, always diversifying their catalogue; after all, they are responsible for bringing the likes of Tame Impala on the scene, so they should be treated with the upmost respect. This time it's Heart People's Homecoming to receive the remix treatment, and London veteran Andrew Weatherall proceeds to transform "Voices" into a pounding, acid-driven house banger still intact with the original's poppy vocals. On the flip, our main man Toulouse Low Trax drops a magnificently leftfield groove to transform "Oceans" into a strange little percussive number filled with murky sub-tones, which leaves MR TC to reframe "Homecoming" into a slow, pulsating glow of bass and abstract melodies lingering like fireflies in mid-air. We've been taken in by the light...

Review: Liverpool-based producer John Heckle is remarkably prolific, but still manages to maintain an impressively high quality threshold. On Tributes To A Sun God, he's in a remarkably melodious mood. While opener "Alexandria" comes blessed with his usual tough analogue beats - not to mention the hissing cymbals of Detroit techno - its' most endearing features are the drowsy pads and undulating melody lines. A similar approach can be found on the more acid-centric "Mesopatamia", which pops and spits with dancefloor intent. A fine package is completed by handclap-heavy drum workout "Track 4", and the Ambient House era electronics and sparse drum hits of "Track 2".

Review: One below-the-line commentator on Discogs recently described Thomas P Heckmann as a "relentless producer". Given the number of EPs he's put out over the course of his 24-year career, it's an apt description. Fittingly, the four tracks here tend towards the "relentless", too, with Heckmann focusing the action around throbbing, strobe-ready rhythms, razor-sharp EBM synthesizer riffs, twisted acid lines and mind-altering electronics. These are proper club tracks for sweaty basements and smoky, dimly lit warehouses, with thunderous opener "Himmel and Hoelle" and the wild, psychedelic closer "Dunkel" being our highlights. That said, the more obviously EBM influenced "Violent Stains" is also top notch.
