No Lights EP (12" + photograph)
Cat: LT 036. Rel: 11 Jul 17
  1. Feeling (vocal mix) (7:59)
  2. Values (6:20)
  3. The Depth (6:20)
  4. No Lights (7:53)
Review: Grant was first brought into the ever-expanding Lobster Theremin family late last year following the release of his rock solid Crank album on label offshoot Mork. Here he graduates to the main label via an EP of spacey analogue house positivity. Opener "Feeling (Vocal Mix)" is our pick, sounding not unlike a dreamier contemporary update of Ernest St Laurent's deep house classic "Clumsy Lobster". That said, there's plenty of treats tucked away elsewhere on the EP, including the thrusting, dub-flecked late night hypnotism of "Values" and the fluttering, analogue-rich sunrise house of closer "No Lights".

Review: Grim Lusk is a brand new alias of producer and experimentalist Murray Collier, who first came to our attention as one half of Optimo Music act Pussy Mothers. As you'd perhaps expect, this debut mini-album is devilishly difficult to pin down, with Collier fusing elements borrowed from a myriad of styles - dub, industrial funk, ambient, instrumental hip-hop, dark post-punk disco, experimental electronica and lo-fi techno included - to create entertaining and ear-pleasing workouts overflowing with interesting ideas. At times, the resultant cuts sound a little like Golden Teacher after a few too many sherberts, at others L.I.E.S style cuts peppered with inspired instrumentation. Throughout, you get the impression that Collier could be a name to watch in the months and years ahead.

  1. Atopic (Lag remix)
  2. 69:02
Review: Sect's third and final sampler for the It's All For You compilation ends on a bittersweet note, seeing the last release from Sect favourite Grovskopa, who has decided to retire following the closest of near death experiences. The A-Side features Lag's remix of his Sect classic "Atopic", reworking the lurching bass and broken-beat rhythms of the original into a hypnotic number with a fractured synth melody. The B-Side sees "2:69", a brittle yet powerful track with churning bass which recalls Drexciya's classically hard edged approach, combined with hazy orchestral sweeps - a fitting swansong for a great producer.

  3. Ten 18 (6:47)
  4. Enjoy The Flesh (6:24)
Review: Escape The Matrix sees the return of NYC sewer dweller Gut Nose, back on the Styles Upon Styles label that issued his superb 2014 album Filthy City. "Ten 18" is a noisy, loopy roller with a chopped up vocal thrown into the mix. It also has a punky undercurrent. Such rough and ready elements are pervasive elsewhere on Escape The Matrix. "Moon Lasers" revolves around a loose rhythm, dubbed out drums and atmospheric textures, while "Drifting to Parts Unknown" follows a similar approach, albeit to a faster tempo and noisier soundscapes. Gut Nose is also adept at making more musical tracks, and on "Enjoy Thy Flesh" even embraces jazzy keys, but he's primarily interested in noisy, at the fringes techno, as the fuzzy, frazzled live drums on "Crafty Gambit" demonstrate.

  3. It's Not Worth The Bother (E Myers remix) (5:22)
  4. Why Does Your Father Look So Nervous (MR remix) (7:45)
Review: London's Karen Gwyer, who has been spotted on the streets of Kreuzberg these days, has been an important member of Semtek's Don't Be Afraid imprint over the last few years, and we can safely say that her mini LP, the wonderful Rembo, was one of 2017's shining highlights. Unsurprisingly, it's up for the remix duties, and our Bristol brother has put together a fine collection of producers to rework and rewire Gwyer's blissful techno sounds. Newcomer Via App detunes "The Workers Are On Strike" into a bubbling, ultra off-kilter mantra of deranged electronics, while LIES stalwart Ron Morelli pushes through some techno lashings on his remix of "He's Been Teaching Me To Drive". Over on side B, E Myers' version of "It's Not Worth The Bother" offers a wacky selection house chords accompanied by a fast techno groove, and MR's take on "Why Does Your Father Look So Nervous" indulges in the deeper, darker, more ethereal side of techno. A lovely affair.

  1. Haddon - "Not Coming To The Club Tonight"
  2. Howes - "Untitled"
  3. L Pearson - "PSR1170"
  4. Perfume Advert - "Dyn Horizontal Multiburst"
Review: Cong Burn is a new label that features a range of producers plying a more interesting twist on the standard deep house formula. Take opening case in point Haddon, who uses oodles of processing to create a slippery, shifting tripper out of "Not Coming To The Club" and instantly stepping aside from the run of the mill milieu. Howes then pops up with the snaking, ultra-deep electro abstractions of "Untitled". L Pearson is in a particularly cheeky mood with the scratchy micro-sampling fun of "PSR1170", calling to mind the crafty chops of Paradroid et al, and then Perfume Advert book end the release with some beautifully horizontal deep house for the subliminally minded to revel in.

  1. Buried Answers
  2. Buried Answers (Jamie Blanco remix)
  3. Literate
  4. Literate (Tiago Team Fumo remix)
Review: Not An Animal Records was formed in 2015 out of the ashes of the London-based party Bad Passion, and has thus far welcomed the likes of Man Power, Ess O Ess and Eric Duncan to release on the label. Now they turn to James Hadfield, a relatively new producer previously spotted on To Rack & Ruin and Me Me Me. On this four-tracker he deals in brooding synthwave tones mixed with classic jack track rhythms. "Literate" is just the kind of taut, sinister club creeper we can't get enough of, while "Buried Answers" takes a skippier but no less moody approach. On the remix front, Jamie Blanco takes the prize, turning "Buried Answers" into a bombastic slice of driving synth pop.

  1. Girl U So Strong
  2. Take Me Away
Review: It's been a little while since Kyle Hall dropped his album The Boat Party, but now the Detroit powerhouse is back on Hyperdub to indulge the freakier end of his studio output inline with his previous Kaychunk 12" for Kode 9's outpost. "Girl U So Strong" is a stirring beast of a track, starting in scattered fragments of bass patterns, vocal snippets and woodblock hits, gradually forming into a starlit stepper of the highest calibre. "Take Me Away" comes on like a Detroit take on the Purple phenomenon, all sticky synth lines and Mega Drive melodies but roughed up with ample grittiness.

  1. Zoe Price (7:25)
  2. Hayley Roach (6:32)
  3. Laura Pomeroy (6:23)
Review: Yaleesa Hall returns to his Will & Ink imprint with some fascinating techno derivatives on the Hayley Laura EP, although these are much more straight ahead than his usual stripped down experiments - best heard on his 2016 debut album. Beginning with the electro-bass assault of "Zoe Price" bringing that UK style sound popularised by Carl Finlow or Radioactive Man in true style. "Hayley Roach" with its splintered beats and and tunnelling sequences are reminiscent of Regis' output in the late '90s, while "Laura Pomeroy" being the the most atmospheric cut on offer here - going down a more lush and hypnotic route. This is the first solo output from the Amsterdam based producer on the label.

  4. Harriet Brown (VIP mix) (5:58)
Review: Shadowy Dutch producer Yaleesa Hall returns on his Will & Ink imprint with yet more fascinating techo derivatives. We thought it was pretty hard to beat his last release (Zoe Hayley Laura) but WNK 013 certainly delivers the goods. From the Bristolian, low-end driven techno assault of "Daisy Wright" (featuring a truly ripsnorting bass!), it follows the slow burning, dystopian electro journey "Barbara Adams". The electro flavour continues on the flip, with some mental smacked-out breaks on the futurist journey "Harriet Brown" which comes with a rather experimental and IDM influenced VIP mix to even out the B side.

Review: Malin Genie's distinctive take on house and techno has already earned him spots on some of the contemporary scene's most vital labels, from Hypercolour to Will & Ink, and now his self-titled label throws the doors open to welcome in a likeminded individual with a similar instinct for unconventional approaches to 4/4 dynamics. Yaleesa Hall has already built up a strong identity on Will & Ink, and in partnership with Genie the results are nothing short of spellbinding. From the shimmering dubby tones of "Coronal Loop" to the submerged ruminations of "Oganesson," this is advanced dance music engineered to twist your synapses and shake your limbs in the most unpredictable of ways.

Review: More oddball grooves from Down Under, courtesy of new Aussie imprint Vulcan Venti - which follows up a great debut by Tambo's House earlier in the year. The Melbournians present Perth's Hamish Rahm aka Hame DJ, whose Dog Swamp EP features three tracks carefully constructed for the discerning disc jockey. Enjoy the throwback sounds of '90s rave on "LL", the frantic yet rather evocative electro bass of the title track and "Exe" which goes for that classic West Yorkshire techno sound of yesteryear.
