  1. 106 Slipper (5:32)
  2. Trench Cadence (4:50)
Review: Denver based Kyle Reid aka Gila merges his rap music past with a newfound knack for banging warehouse techno on his first release for his own Hunnaban Inc. Reid has been engineering unpredictable beats for some time - his debut solo 12" was on XL in 2016's (the Genkidama EP), as well as Pick Six on Benji B's Deviation imprint .He's also been releasing as part of rap duo Gorgeous Children (alongside Face Vega) since the early 2010s. The A side features the seething and slow-burning bass techno of "106 Slipper" which will appeal to fans of UK producers such as Pangaea or Pearson Sound. On the flip, be prepared to be hypnotised by some intense polyrhythms on "Trench Cadence" which soon degrades into somewhat abrasive territory.

  1. Gilbert - "Birds Of Paradise"
  2. Mark Hand - "Lessons"
  3. Lerosa - "Shadow"
  4. Owain K - "Pixeled Scenery"
Review: Innate is a new Bristol label born from the blog of the same name. This first release features a spread of talent both established and emergent, all bound together by a love of illustrious machine soul. Gilbert leads in with the sumptuous tones of "Birds Of Paradise" before Mark Hand takes control with the uptempo cascade of "Lessons." The vintage techno vibes continue apace on the B side as Lerosa lays out one of his gorgeous square wave bass lines amidst some snagging drums and quivering synth flourishes, and then label boss Owain K finishes the picture with the laid back musings of "Pixeled Scenery."

Live Again (12")
Cat: DC 180. Rel: 10 Jan 18
  1. Live Again (feat Danny Tenaglia) (8:26)
  2. Secrets Of Vibration (6:56)
  3. Take It Back (6:35)
Review: New York City represents in true colours here for techno powerhouse Drumcode. Adam Beyer has called in rising star Layton Giordani for a collaboration with the don of the Big Apple himself: Danny Tenaglia, on the powerful and euphoric anthem "Live Again". This one has all the druggy vocals, tunnelling bassline and headrush inducing suspense you'd expect from the label. The flip features the rhythm focused DJ tool "Secrets Of Vibration" featuring a sexy spiritual monologue over a powerful TR-909 workout that reaches near tribal moments - matter of fact it's reminiscent of Samuel L Session's seminal work from the late '90s. Finally, we are treated to one more exercise in dancefloor drama on the brooding "Take It Back" which features a razor sharp bassline, diva vocals and soaring arpeggios. This follows up some great releases on sister label Truesoul, Intec and Octopus Black Label.

Inkblots #2 (limited white vinyl 12")
Cat: INK 002. Rel: 08 Dec 14
  1. Go Hiyama - "Recur"
  2. Go Hiyama - "Prop"
  3. I/Y - "Thesys 0000.001"
  4. I/Y - "Thesys 0000.003"
Review: Never one to be messed with in the world of tough, po-faced techno, Go Hiyama gets busy on the A side of the latest Inkblots release following sterling turns on Stroboscopic Artefacts and Perc Trax. Both tracks move with a cold heart, although the stabbing bassline on "Recur" will still register quickly with attentive dancers. Berlin duo I/Y may be newer to the game, but their fulsome and textured sound brims with maturity, embracing broken rhythms to craft an ear-snagging sound as subtle as it is tough. It's a style that holds true across the whole EP, yielding four immensely workable and distinctive techno tracks for those who like it metallic.

  2. Techno World (Beatapella) (1:34)
  3. Techno World (instrumental) (6:59)
  4. Techno World (Detroit's Filthiest remix) (3:17)
Review: Tim Checkley and Clint Watkins first joined forces in 2016, unleashing the original version of "Techno World" on Bass Agenda Recordings. Here, the track finally gets a vinyl release, with the duo's extended mix of their original version - a bass-heavy, funk-fuelled electro workout that sounds like an unlikely collaboration between Kraftwerk, Soulsonic Force, Newcleus and Cybotron - being joined by a trio of alternative versions. There's a "Beatapella" (sparse beats and vocoder vocals), a rock solid instrumental (a chance to revel in their liquid synth bass, delay-laden TR-808 hits and throbbing sub-bass) and a headline remix from Detroit's Filthiest. This is arguably the EP's standout moment and sounds like Aux88 covering Kraftwerk's "It's More Fun To Compute".

New Hat (12")
Cat: UNO 008. Rel: 23 Jul 12
  1. Seagate
  2. Blankface ATM
  3. Viewing Hrs (Zzz)
Review: Since launching with an Eddie Mars EP last Summer, UNO have fast defined their place as a go to label in the realms of experimental electronic music, with well received releases from artists as varied as CFCF, Fatima Al Qadiri, Jacques Greene and LOL Boys. The label's latest release ushers in a hitherto unknown quantity in the shape of Gobby, who justifies effortlessly his/her place on the UNO roster with four dizzying cuts, On the first two tracks this fledgling producer displays a real knack for making thoroughly strange music which is also innately funky. "Viewing HRS (Zzz)" is especially hooky even as micro-samples and wonky melodies try their best to throw the groove off course. "Blankface ATM" sees things getting weirder as electro techno (after a fashion) gets degraded and dissected, before "/U\" ploughs into a nightmarish vision of anchorless, darkside rhythm and noise.

  1. The Intruder (4:33)
  2. The Intruder (Neil Landstrumm remix) (4:34)
  3. The Friction (Banished To Frigia remix) (5:18)
Review: Vivod rescue some Gold Blood material from the archives for their latest hand stamped 12" release, pairing up an original track by the duo (The Chariots and The Good Wife frontman Emile Bojesen and Brassica producer Michael Anthony Wright for the uninitiated) with two remixes. In original form, "The Intruder" finds Gold Blood channelling Liasions Dangereuses with a dash of Trent Reznor attitude thrown in, as Bojesen yelps angrily over a spiky guitar riff. Scottish techno icon Neil Landstrumm remixes "The Intruder", embellishing the track's synthier intricacies wonderfully whilst on the flip the dramatically named Banished To Frigia turn in a snarling remix of "The Friction" which would probably have scared the Nag Nag Nag crew right through back in the days of electroclash.

Review: FIT Sound are back with "Resonance", the debut 12" by the duo Golden Mean who offer up symmetry, proportion and harmony via house music. Said to be comprised of two music academics in the form of Americans Sabisha Friedberg and Tyler Wilcox, the track's deep and reductionist groove is hypnotic and truly sublime with Friedberg's trance inducing spoken word atop adding further to its lovely mystique. There is a handy acappella version and the "Toxic Mix" on the flip which takes you on a dubby acid trip that's perfect for drifting and channels that classic Plastikman vibe circa the mid nineties, in a way.

  1. Spocking Fivers (7:00)
  2. Fantastic Plane (6:08)
  3. As Above, So Below (5:25)
Review: Nick Hoppner and Sunao Gonno are old pals, having first met in Tokyo way back in 2008. Here they join forces for a one-off collaborative EP on Hoppner's regular home, Ostgut Ton. Interestingly, all of the featured tracks are closer to Gonno's tactile, Balearic-tinged club sound than Hoppner's drowsy European deep house. "Fantastic Planet", in particular, is superb, with the duo layering undulating synthesizer lines and blissful melodies atop a bouncy, Detroit/Chicago fusion house groove. Elsewhere, "As Above, So Below" fuses long-drawn out organ chords and sustained notes with bubbling drum machine beats, while "Spocking Fivers" is a deep, jazzy and rubbery excursion into sparkling Balearic deep house.

  2. The Kind (5:23)
  3. The Kind (Storm dub) (5:27)
Review: Apparently, Rene Pawlowitz doesn't already have enough production aliases. Having already released killer material as Shed, Head High, Craft, WK7, The Traveller and War Easy Made (to name a few), he's now adopted another moniker: Zigg Gonzalezz. "High Jackin" sees him expertly doffing a cap to Nuyorican Soul-era Masters At Work and similarly loose-limbed US house from the turn of the millennium, layering sparkling deep house chords and sweaty vocal samples over a bustling, Africanism-style rhythm. "The Kind" explores similarly territory, though it feels a little deeper despite the presence of denser, tribal-influenced rhythms. As for "The Kind (Storm Dub"), it feels like a long lost DJ Duke jam from the tail end of the '90s.

  3. Quantum Corrections (9:31)
Review: It sounds like Lithuanian producer Grad U has found his natural home on Echocord. The Danish imprint has been one of the most distinctive platforms in dub techno and Space Explorations fits right in to its brief. "Debris Disk" starts the release with an ominous, mid-tempo groove and splintered hats, reminiscent of Dimension 5. "Hydrogen Reactor" is more functional, with cheese wire percussion mixed with tough but resonant kicks. However, it sounds like Grad U's comfort zone is a more esoteric place and the spacey chords and billowing textures of "Quantum Corrections" is a beautifully measured, reflective affair.

  2. Observing The Night Sky (10:39)
Review: Like a lot of prolific dub techno producers, much of Grad_U's music slips out on CD. This EP marks his first appearance on wax for well over a year and contains two typically elongated, locked-in workouts. We're particularly enjoying A-side "Jacob's Dream", a sumptuous, 14-minute aural hallucination rich in seemingly shimmering electronic motifs, crackling percussion samples and aural textures smothered in Vasoline. While utterly sublime, it's nowhere near as dancefloor-focused as flipside "Observing The Night Sky", a gently pulsating chunk of vintage dub techno underpinned by a rock solid kick-drum pattern. In a word: intoxicating.

  4. Delayed Cycles 04 (7:06)
Review: A great one here for lovers of the very deepest strains of dub techno in the vein of Basic Channel, Echospace and Vibrant here by the mysterious Hello Strange imprint out of Saint Petersburg. Igor Arsenjev aka Gradient has been pursuing cyclical introversion for the better part of a decade, on fairly underground digital labels for the most part. On the Delayed Cycles EP, he delivers four 'versions' that span the delay drenched and glacial hypnotism of the A side, to explorations of the deep and evocative caverns of the mind on the flip. A must for fans of Rod Modell and Mike Schommer's dc series in the early noughties, as it treads a similar icy path - this one is complete and utter bliss. Tip!

Review: Over the course of his career, Max Graef has proved to be rather adaptable, variously turning his hand to dusty deep house, revivalist jazz-funk, drowsy hip-hop beats and nu-jazz. On this EP he touches on many of those styles, but it's the angular, techno-influenced analogue electronics, Motor City chords and shuffling beats of opener "Thrillhouse & Bonus Beat" that really sets the pulse racing. Graef's obsession with raw, lo-fi sounds is further explored on "2 Cool 4 U", which sounds like a cross between tropical house, early UK bleep and wayward techno, while closer "Bunds" sees him wrap deep space electronics around a sparse, pitched-up, high-register drum machine beat. As for the rest of the EP, it's deep, dusty, jazzy and really rather good.

Review: Having only just released an EP through Midgar, 2017 looks set to be a winning year for techno deviant Von Grall. The Semantica associate is up on Modularz this week, and from the tenebrous sounds of "Seeking Loyalty", it's clear that the producer is in absolutely no mood to stray outside of the techno framework. This is some pretty dark material. "Distinction" is another hefty roller of a tune, this time stripped-back to a hypnotic sequence of bleeps and airy pads while, on the flipside, "Next Form" bashes out a cacophonous flurry of electrifying tones, and "Obtain It" flutters its pulsating bass tones over a minimalistic array of 6am sonics. Nasty, unforgiving gear for the dancefloor.
