  1. Maximum Entropy
  2. Bimodal
  3. Piecewise Dub
  4. Dweller
Review: Gauss is made up of Chicago's Natan H and Owen Jay, the main man behind the Batti Batti label and countless other high grade deep and leftfield house and techno variations. The vibe is crisp and machine-powered on this collaborative EP, which follows previous appearances on Hizou Deep Rooted Music and Contrast-Wax, leading in with the punchy but mellow electro excursion "Maximum Entropy". There is a shuffle at work on "Bimodal" but still the Detroit influences are at the front and centre of the mix. "Piecewise Dub" veers off into spacious, experimental territory where the beats come second to the strafing synth work, and then "Dweller" finishes things off with some bare bones machine funk.

Cat: SUSLTD 001R. Rel: 09 Aug 17
  1. I Drop Acid Tonight (8:09)
  2. Panic (8:14)
  3. I Drop Acid Tonight (Paul Mac remix) (5:32)
  4. Panic (Snuffo remix) (7:01)
  5. Panic (Snuff Crew remix) (6:42)
Review: Late Cologne acid extraordinaire Andreas Gehm released Panic/I Drop Acid back in 2015 on local imprint Suspected. It now gets a reissue featuring the two original tracks plus a bunch of killer remixes. The intense and tunnelling warehouse techno of "I Drop Acid Tonight"is absolutely timeless and a true recreation of the early '90s techno sound, while the epic "Panic" features some more gliding 303 business over some spitfire rhythm patterns. Speaking of which, there's some fierce drums also on to be admired on UK techno legend Paul Mac's rework. Snuffo's brooding lo-fi industrial techno workout will appeal to L.I.E.S. fans and Berlin retroverts Snuff Crew hand in a suitably jackin' Chicago style remix that you'd expect of the I Love Acid fraternity.

Yes Or No (12" + insert)
Cat: HAPSKL 007. Rel: 16 Jul 15
  1. Yes Or No (5:19)
  2. Summer Time In Coloniae (5:07)
  3. Going By (5:36)
Review: The Happy Skull label hasn't been afraid to look locally for inspiration, with The Kelly Twins sourcing some fine output from Bristol types Marco Bernardi, Rhythmic Theory, Kowton. But 12"s from Throwing Shade and Creta Kano suggests their feelers extend much further too! The latest Happy Skull release extends an invitation to Cologne and the severely under rated Andreas Gehm, a man who really knows how to abuse his acid lines to great effect. Lead track "Yes Or No" is the sort of cut you keep in your record box for the sweaty moments deep into a set when you really want to beat down the dancefloor. "Summer Time In Coloniae" does offer a more pensive side to Gehm's palette and perhaps inspired the Twin Peaks artwork on the 12", whilst closer "Going By" is ocean deep.

Medication (12")
Cat: 7DAYSENTGN 1001. Rel: 24 Sep 13
  1. Sum Light
  2. Generic Current
  3. Acid Alcohol
Review: Having already released more material in the past year than producers manage in five, it seems appropriate to remove the "rising" tag from the Detroit-based teenager Generation Next's description, especially when confronted by the quality of the productions on Medication. Adopting a tougher stance than on the deeper sounds of his previous issues on 7 Days Entertainment, the EP explores a number of acidic permutations; "Sum Light" sees a finely tuned 303 line hopping amidst crisp drum machine rhythms, while "Acid Alcohol" sees a livelier variation on the same theme augmented by brisk 808s. However, it's "Generic Current" that offers the most impressive cut, a heady combination of droning bass and sci-fi lead that sounds like it should be soundtracking a malevolent cyborg stalking the streets of Detroit.

  5. Track 5 (6:47)
  6. Track 6 (5:30)
Review: Roger Gerressen launched the Monoware project last year, via a split 12" on Sushitech that also contained a killer cut from Ion Ludwig. Here the experienced Dutch producer returns to the same label with a much more expansive proposition: the first Monoware full-length. While there's one foray into head-in-the-clouds, sofa-friendly deep dub territory (the delicious closing cut), the other tracks clearly take aim at the dancefloor. These club workouts are all rooted in techno, but various draw unfluence from crackly, lo-fi explorations, intergalactic broken techno, tech-jazz, toasty deep house and the blazed, metronomic pulse of dub techno. Happily, Gerressen barely puts a foot wrong throughout, serving up tracks that are as warm and otherworldly as they are sturdy and club-ready.

  1. Lucky (Audion remix) (6:10)
  2. Lucky (dub) (5:17)
Review: Here's something to get the senses tingling; a typically surging, heavyweight remix of Phantasy's enigmatic odd-pop starlet Ghost Culture from Matthew Dear's alternative Audion project. His remix of "Lucky" is undeniably stellar, lacing snippets of Ghost Culture's vocal and fuzzy electronic textures over a booming, kick-drum heavy techno groove and surging, high tempo sub bass motif. It's fairly sparse, production wise, but ludicrously heavy. Ghost Culture provides a dub of the same track on the flip, cutting-up his Junior Boys style vocals and bubbling synthesizer refrains in a little more dancefloor-friendly way. It's solid, but really this is all about the Audion remake.

  4. The Machine
  5. Nightdrive Detroit
  6. Resident Evil
Review: Having been dormant for over three years, New York label Satamile returns to continue spreading the gospel of proper electro music with a six-track EP from The Ghost That Walks. Drexciya enthusiasts will be all over this record; the rubbery melody of "The Angriest Angel" recalls the Detroit duo at their most playful but with a simmering undercurrent of tension that is very much the producer's own signature style. Similarly great are the searing analogue synth buzz of "Seven Deadly Sons", the tribal 303 stomp of "Urban Jungle" and the 808 rattle and Belgian rave tones of "Resident Evil". Those who were lost without the label's presence should rest easy - Angry Angels is easily among their extensive catalogue's best releases.

  5. Tilt (MD edit) (4:46)
  6. Speedrun (4:34)
Review: Sweden's Noah Gibson first appeared in 2015 on his local imprint Krasch Records, in addition to a release on TANSTAAFL and his own Trouble In Paradise imprint which he runs with Henrik Bergqvist. It's quite impressive that his sixth release thus far in such a short amount of time lands on Marcel Dettmann's esteemed imprint. A New Day features six cuts of raw and jacking analogue techno shenanigans which are quite a departure from the label's usual preference for harsh and industrial greyscale techno excursions. Gibson's style is somewhat reminiscent of the rusty analogue punk of homegrown heroes like Frak at times; especially on the lo-fi electro funk of "Silent Install" which was real style. However, the high octane clang and clatter of "Origin" and the cyclical thump of "Tilt" (MD Edit) will have the MDR faithful satisfied for sure.

  1. 106 Slipper (5:32)
  2. Trench Cadence (4:50)
Review: Denver based Kyle Reid aka Gila merges his rap music past with a newfound knack for banging warehouse techno on his first release for his own Hunnaban Inc. Reid has been engineering unpredictable beats for some time - his debut solo 12" was on XL in 2016's (the Genkidama EP), as well as Pick Six on Benji B's Deviation imprint .He's also been releasing as part of rap duo Gorgeous Children (alongside Face Vega) since the early 2010s. The A side features the seething and slow-burning bass techno of "106 Slipper" which will appeal to fans of UK producers such as Pangaea or Pearson Sound. On the flip, be prepared to be hypnotised by some intense polyrhythms on "Trench Cadence" which soon degrades into somewhat abrasive territory.

  2. Mark Hand - "Lessons"
  3. Lerosa - "Shadow"
  4. Owain K - "Pixeled Scenery"
Review: Innate is a new Bristol label born from the blog of the same name. This first release features a spread of talent both established and emergent, all bound together by a love of illustrious machine soul. Gilbert leads in with the sumptuous tones of "Birds Of Paradise" before Mark Hand takes control with the uptempo cascade of "Lessons." The vintage techno vibes continue apace on the B side as Lerosa lays out one of his gorgeous square wave bass lines amidst some snagging drums and quivering synth flourishes, and then label boss Owain K finishes the picture with the laid back musings of "Pixeled Scenery."

  1. Live Again (feat Danny Tenaglia) (8:26)
  2. Secrets Of Vibration (6:56)
  3. Take It Back (6:35)
Review: New York City represents in true colours here for techno powerhouse Drumcode. Adam Beyer has called in rising star Layton Giordani for a collaboration with the don of the Big Apple himself: Danny Tenaglia, on the powerful and euphoric anthem "Live Again". This one has all the druggy vocals, tunnelling bassline and headrush inducing suspense you'd expect from the label. The flip features the rhythm focused DJ tool "Secrets Of Vibration" featuring a sexy spiritual monologue over a powerful TR-909 workout that reaches near tribal moments - matter of fact it's reminiscent of Samuel L Session's seminal work from the late '90s. Finally, we are treated to one more exercise in dancefloor drama on the brooding "Take It Back" which features a razor sharp bassline, diva vocals and soaring arpeggios. This follows up some great releases on sister label Truesoul, Intec and Octopus Black Label.
