Equalized #005 (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: EQUALIZED 005/64531. Rel: 16 Nov 11
  1. Track 1
  2. Track 2
Review: ** Repress for the Rene P fans! ** By now it's no secret to most that the anonymous Equalized series can be attributed to Shed; their scale alone is enough to give away the identity of the series' creator. The fifth entry in the series sees the sound increase in size further still; The A-Side offers a gnarled bassline, whose acidic qualities offer one of the most intense moments of the five 12"s so far. The B-Side offers a texturally similar cut to its companion; but instead of a relatively straightforward synth backbone, a crunchy melody floats and jostles somewhere a little higher, manically panning between channels, before a huge breakdown that offers a well placed moment of soothing calm before the inevitable return to its furious warehouse stomp. These may be a fairly straightforward pair of techno tracks, but they're imbued with the kind of demented energy that characterises the best Shed productions.

Equalized #008 (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: EQUALIZED 008. Rel: 27 Mar 18
  1. Track 1 (7:04)
  2. Track 2 (5:59)
Review: The big, bad Shed is back with the eighth outing of his Equalized imprint, and we are well up for this! The label has been dormant for a few years now, but as soon as we saw that blue sticker land on our charts it took us back to simpler times, when phat-ass techno was being pumped out on white labels week in, week out. Unsurprisingly, both of these cuts are absolute bombs, with "Track 1" taking us right to the heart of the Berghain dance floor thanks to some absolutely booming kicks and, of course, the man's signature dub wise moves lingering overhead; "Track 2" is a much more cavernous affair, unloading a dark, endless wormhole of woozy bleeps and background noise, pushed forwards by sweltering break beats and that inimitable Shed touch.

Equalized #006 (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: EQUALIZED 006. Rel: 18 Jul 17
  1. Track 1 (7:54)
  2. Track 2 (6:25)
Review: If you're a tech fiend it doesn't really get better than this; the big, bad, bold and often mysteriously positioned Shed is back with another slice of Equalized funk in what is now an instantly recognisable white label. That font, those stamps, that sound - it's back for the series 6th instalment and, as you'd expect, Shed has reinvented himself once again here. His familiarly jagged percussion flex is still very much in place on both tracks, but he's meandered onto more sombre, less direct territories that tap into the shadier, more obscure sides of techno. "Track 1" is a deep, progressive bombshell that pounds its bass drums to a mild-mannered sequence of harmonies, whereas the more punishing "Track 2" reverts to the man's more prototypical formula - that is, a electrifying swarm of bass surrounded by killer drums and his trademark hypnotism. Wonderful, as per usual.

  1. Swarming Data (10:27)
  2. Binary Staccato (8:38)
  3. Ballistic Groove (9:02)
Review: There's been plenty of speculation about the identity of the "mystery producer" behind the Eqwel project, which has been responsible for a string of inspired techno workouts on Joaquin "Joe" Clausell's Sacred Rhythm and Atypical Dopeness imprints. We have a few ideas about who it could be, and there are certainly clues hidden within the densely layered rhythm tracks, guttural analogue electronics and fuzzy, lo-fi textures that dominate the producer's latest EP. Check, in particular, the pleasingly rubbery "Ballistic Groove", an electro-fired broken techno workout rich in computer bleeps and metallic percussion hits, and the ten-ton intensity of dark tribal techno slammer "Swarming Data", which stacks up African-influenced drums over end-of-days chords and sturdy, locked-in kick-drums.

  1. Abdumanob
  2. Bed Of Honour
  3. Tribe
  4. Resin
  5. Caucasus
  6. Aerograd
Review: The second release on Resonance comes from emergent Russian producer Ivan Erofeev, who was previously moonlighting as Aleph before reverting to his birth name. There's a tantalizing drama embedded in "Abdumanob", all taut tribal percussion and an insistent kick. "Bed Of Honour" is a deeper cut fleshed out with atmospheric dubby ripples, and "Tribe" taps into a more classic kind of contemporary techno headspace. "Resin" flips the script with some crusty piano samples and a lopsided beat, "Caucasus" strips things down to a mean-tempered rhythmic core and "Aerograd" lets the cyclical bleeps do the talking.

New Road (7") (1 per customer)
Cat: TUP 002. Rel: 02 Dec 16
  1. New Road (3:02)
  2. Summer Nights (5:07)
Review: We've been rather spoiled this year with new Convextion material. His 2845 full-length on Artless is arguably one of the best electronic albums of 2016, while his ambient-leaning 12" on Acido was also breathtakingly good. Here, he rounds off the year with a fine 7" single containing two terrific tracks. The veteran producer begins with new road, a delightfully spacey combination of cascading melody lines, similarly tumbling bass, and punchy but laidback electro beats. It's evocative and emotion-rich like much of his best work. Similar accolades could be heaped upon flispide "Summer Nights", a warmer and woozier concoction that sounds like Larry Heard in electro mode.

  1. Subliminal Wave
  2. Phayse Distance
  3. Memory Upgrade
  4. Permission To Dream
Review: The latest joint on Verdant comes from an exciting new collaboration between ESB (previously spotted on Echovolt, Leftroom and Heart To Heart) and Mihail Petrovski of Distant Worlds and Seventh Sign. This is classically informed machine soul as you would expect on Verdant, kicking off with the expressive deep techno stomp of "Subliminal Wave". "Phayse Distance" edges things towards the stratosphere with a staggered groove, plenty of cosmic acid tweaking and airy pads, and "Memory Upgrade" floats in a bath of mellow chords and submerged drums. "Permission To Dream" cools things down even more, ending the record on a particularly mellow note that B12 would be proud of.

  1. From Pillar To Post (7:17)
  2. Flight Out Of Time (7:34)
  3. Signs Of Life (6:45)
  4. Zenith (6:21)
Review: Escape Artist hasn't been around for very long, having only previously released one cassette, but the Melbourne artist is surrounded by like-minded talents from the land down-under, so he should have no problems in finding some well-earned spotlight. Out through Salt Mines, a Lobster Theremin deviation, these tunes are a powerful reinterpretation of past sounds and styles, this time focusing on the outer edges of grime and old-school d&b. Much like the sounds of peeps like Alix Perez, and other minimalist jungle fiends, "From Pillar To Post" glitches its drum rolls with a sleek, imperceptible touch, and the same goes for the more house-centric sway of the acidic "Flight Out Of Time". "Signs Of Life" is a killer deep house nugget with plenty of Chicago references, while "Zenith" heads back to the UK, recalling music from legends like Photek and LTJ Bukem. Top!

  2. Flamingos & Wombles & The Blue Oyster Cult (Cyber dub) (8:28)
Review: After strong turns on Ene Records and Love On The Rocks back in 2014, Ess O Ess make a welcome return with this surefooted single for Not An Animal. "Flamingoes & Wombles & The Blue Oyster Cult" is an urgent, driving slice of motorik disco powered by arpeggios, live bass and shamanistic chanting that calls to mind Yello's chart-baiting classic "The Race". The A side version keeps the synth levels high throughout, while on the flip the "Cyber Dub" teases the ingredients out for a more subtle effect. Whichever side you plump for though, the transcendental qualities are strong on this 12".

Review: As part of Mura Oka, Louis Vial has already been spotted on the excellent Latency label as well as delivering a solo EP to Collapsing Market earlier this year. He once again dons his Eszaid cape on this release for the equally fine Meandyou stable, tapping into the labels predilection for obscure variations on the fringes of house and techno. "777,7" is especially captivating in its insistent cyclical minimalism, drilling straight for the subconscious, while "Eyeless Mannekin" sets adrift in aqueous climes for a proper floatation tank dub techno immersion. Using subtlety as a powerful tool, Eszaid ably matches up to the quality that has come before on Meandyou.

  4. Fabric - "Pink Grid" (7:09)
Review: Manchester's meandyou. collective take their time over releases, averaging just over a 12" per year. Here they kick off 2016 with another collaborative EP, full of drowsy deep house, crackling techno and tipsy, world-weary ambience. With label conspirator Herron otherwise engaged, it falls to Workshopper Even Tuell to kick things off with the slowly unfurling new age chords, blazed vocal samples and sparse-but-chunky deep house groove of "Boys Truth". Sul "Does It For Andy" on the creepy, discordant dark world ambient track of the same name, before Sensu brings back the beats on the hypnotic, experimental dubby techno shuffle of "Sigmon". Finally, Fabric lays back and lights something fragrant on the similarly dub techno influenced, metallic IDM-goes-ambient of "Pink Grid".

  1. The Exaltics - "Endless Journey" (5:09)
  2. Umwelt - "Delusive Reality" (5:33)
Review: On this installment of the long running Rave Or Die series, ever-present producer Umwelt is joined by prolific, mask-wearing techno misfits The Exaltics. It's the latter, a German twosome headed up by Robert Witschakowski, who strike first, layering up bubbly electronics, hard-wired acid lines, muscular beats and spacey chords on the sweaty techno/electro hybrid "Endless Journey". Umwelt goes a little deeper and moodier on flipside "Delusive Reality". While the acid lines are sharp and occasionally intense, he contrasts them with bittersweet pads, yearning melodies and a pulsating rhythm track full of relentless kick drums, crunchy snares and hissing cymbals.

Review: Eric Cloutier launched Palinoia last year with a single of his own, but now he's turned to Berlin mainstays Exercise One to lay down some of their trademark psychoactive machine music for the second installment. "Heptagon" sports metallic synth notes clanging out over a freight train of techno drums, while "Prism" takes a more nimble approach to twist out its various synthetic squeaks. "Nitrogen" is a warmer proposition, placing the emphasis on chords and melodies while still aiming squarely at the dancefloor. "Thirty Four" finds the duo veering away from the 4/4 dogma to deliver a captivating kind of broken techno in a soundscape loaded with tension and ominous empty space.

Review: Since first pricking the consciousness of the international techno community with their 2001 debut 12" Zet Oviedo, Exium has become a reliable source of solid, often fiendishly dark dancefloor material. Here they add another label to their bulging discography via a debut on the similarly impressive Mord. There are few surprises, of course, but plenty of robust, thrusting floor-fillers. It's all of a reliably high standard, but we're particularly enjoying opener "Unipolar" - a maudlin chunk of throbbing darkroom funk complete with a nagging, rave-inspired riff - and the deeper, impressively trippy hypnotism of "Shock Waves". That said, the alien, acid-tinged closer "Human Element", may well be the best of the lot.

Review: X/OZ is a new force in Icelandic techno started by Exos, and following a sterling various artists release the label welcomes its masters in collaboration with Ohm, and the results are magnificent. "Thrir" opens the record up with typically Scandinavian drones and reduced grooves, while "Frodari" takes a more intimate approach further expanded upon by the additional ambient take of the track. "Data Re Entry" wriggles a cheeky acid line into the smoky mood on the B side, while "Hoggur" expounds the merits of utterly reduced, creepy-as-hell techno before the final ambient shimmers of "Snert Horpu Mina".
