  1. The Drifter (7:27)
  2. Last Seen Leaving (6:41)
  3. Never Somewhere (6:11)
Review: Aside from his own Edit Select Records, Anthony MacKinnon aka Edit Select has been a big player in some very big labels like Prologue and Ostgut Ton throughout the years. The present Modularz has also been a core driver of the man's deep-minded techno frameworks, and this new EP feels like a return to form. Opening the skies is "The Drifter", a classic slice of headstrong techno spewing with bleeping atmospherics and propelled forwards by a sleek, tenebrous gust of ambience. On the flip, "Last Seen Leaving" heads deeper into the whirlpool thanks to a hypnotic groove, and "Never Somewhere" offers a much needed dose of acid to inject a little nerves into the equation. That's us enjoying ourselves in case you hadn't understood...

  2. Scott Edward - "All Is Lost" (6:32)
  3. Ultra Modern Art - "In Microcosm" (5:58)
  4. Ultra Modern Art - "Brave New World" (5:13)
Review: Proper old school Detroit-style techno here, the type that calls to mind first wave innovators such as Model 500, Derrick May and 3MB courtesy of Scott Edward Hodgson. The UK producer came up in the early '90s a few years after the aforementioned, releasing some soulful Motor City inspired jams via his cult Beau Monde and Out Of Orbit imprints. The releases fetch exorbitant prices on the second hand market, but thanks to Berlin's Libertine and now Le Loup's Shadowplay imprint: here we have some unearthed sleeper classics. On the A side the funked up hi-tech soul of "Access Activists" represents a true zeitgeist of early techno that's really hard to reproduce these days - try getting a groove like this out of your AIRA, kid! On the flip are two tracks from Hodgson's other known alias Ultra Modern Art. The uplifting flavour of "In Microcosm" calls to mind similar anthems of the day like "Nude Photo" or any remix by Atkins under his 'Magic Juan' alias. By contrast, the deep and introspective acid of "Brave New World" offers up something a bit more serious and contemplative. Mind blowing stuff! Hodgson is still active to this day and runs the Art Edit imprint / studio, out of Bath in Somerset.

  1. America (Terrence Dixon Minimal Detroit mix) (7:00)
  2. Acid Bells (DJ Koze edit) (7:37)
Review: If you had to pick a handful of highlights from Efdemin's bulging biography, we'd wager that 2007's "Acid Bells" and 2007's "America" would be amongst them. Curle Recordings clearly thinks so, too, because they've decided to deliver freshly remixed versions of both. Fittingly, veteran Detroiter Terrence Parker reworks "America", dousing Efedemin's Steve Reich style cyclic melody in copious amounts of delay and reverb whilst maintaining a metronomic, Motor City style minimal techno groove. DJ Koze sprints off in the other direction, adding waves of pots-and-pans percussion hits to the already-wonky brilliance of "Acid Bells". Both revisions are relatively reverential and sound like sure-fire early morning winners.

Review: Essential fare from the highly respected pairing of Roman Flugel and Running Back, with the ever inventive German artist digging into his personal archives for Gerd Janson's excellent label as Eight Miles High. Consisting of two full tracks and a triplet of B Side loops, Flugel apparently rescued these productions from some old DAT Tapes (hopefully found in his basement) and they find the prolific producer very much "wearing a techno helmet." The fact that the Lost Tracks 12 arrives with descriptive terms such as strange, dark, heavy, loop, high speed, EBM and industrial should offer some indication what to expect. Indeed lead track "Outtake" sounds like the perfect moment deep into the night at Robert Johnson distilled onto record.

  5. Andromeda Complex - "The Servant" (Klankman remix)
Review: Latest in the run of downright deviant activities from the Contort Yourself camp is this new collection of old and new industrial tinged bangers, leading in with the excellent noirish heat of Eindkrak's slow-stepping "Shawarma". Andromeda Complex's mid-90s rhythm-fest sits in stark, functional contrast before GDL's own contemporary rhythm science sends the record spinning in a reverie of surprisingly light-footed percussion. Circling Vultures are too enjoying the mean tempered intensity of focused drum machine programming before Klankman rounds the record off with a slightly squelchy remix of Andromeda Complex's "The Servant".

  4. Shoganai (6:37)
Review: It's been two years since Evan Baggs and Katsuya Sano opened up their Ek Box. Fittingly, their latest show-and-tell arrives on CABARET, a label that has supported the duo's activities since they first emerged. There's much to admire, not least the unfussy old school techno bounce of "Mitsuboshi", where darting, jammed-out synthesizer lines and sustained organ chords dance enthusiastically above a simple but powerful drum machine rhythm. The acid-fired techno-funk of "Maukacho" is wilder and more energetic, while "Takikomi" sees the duo tiptoe the fine line between ballsy breakbeat techno and sweeping, cinematic bliss. As for closer "Shoganai", it's punchy, bass-heavy and pleasingly intergalactic.

  1. Track 1 (5:47)
  2. Track 2 (5:29)
  3. Track 3 (7:29)
  4. Track 4 (4:57)
Review: It's no surprise that Holland's Ekman has sprung up on the Bedouin label. After all, the imprint proposes a very similar sort of deal to the likes of Berceuse Heroique. Both labels love dark iconography and mood sounds; while it is clearly not to everyone's taste, at least they try hard. Ekman rocks up with four nasty cuts, the first "Track 1" attacking the speakers with a brutal shade of distorted bass and wild bass drumming, while "Track 2" adds in a little 303 nuttiness for good measure. On the flip, "Track 3" gargles its gnarly acidity over a layer of bubbling synths and metallic percussion, leaving "Track 4" to provide some much needed, and firmly stripped-down, beat flexing. Heavy gear, as expected.

  3. Synaptic Feedback Loops (7:26)
  4. Antinomy (5:20)
Review: Nijmegen electro imprint Shipwrec shows us how its done yet again. After a terrific release previously from Welsh mad scientist Dez Williams, its Roel Dijcks aka Ekman stepping up, following up some killer releases on Pankerkreuz, The Trilogy Tapes and Berceuse Heroique. "Autapse" begins proceedings in haunting fashion; spooky church organs provide the backdrop for an epic, soaring acid lead while "Uncertainty Principle" is sub-aquatic, Drexciyan electro for freaks. On the flip is the title track; keeping on like before but with a four to the floor beat for added dancefloor dynamics. Finally "Antinomy" delves into deeper terrain; its razor sharp and morphing synth line leading you further into the darkness of the abyss.

  4. Crime Scene - "Land Of The Gipsies"
  5. Etcher - "Pelican Nebula"
  6. Takeshi Kouzuki - "MA-18" (part 2)
Review: Devoted to acid sounds, London based label Abstract Acid drops the six track retrospective Downtown Dirt #2 EP. Elec Pt 1 opens with "3030303", a first-rate sequence of looped drums, thrumming toms, a dirty 303 bass line with explanatory vocal to match. Takeshi Kouzuki potentially does away any compression in "Missing", allowing busy drums to lay a solid foundation for minimalistic acid plods and an electric lead. Crime Scene undoes the B-side with a trippy slice of acid tinged and abstract house music while Etcher gets dirty acid-electro with "Pelican Nebula". Takeshi Kouzuki'a second track for the EP employs yet another smouldering 303 drive, backed by hardworking drums. For fans of Disco Nihilist!

  2. Stefan Rein - "Panther" (6:56)
  3. RRoxymore - "Tropicalcore" (6:34)
  4. Boris & Fiedel - "Div'hain" (6:19)
Review: The latest edition of Berghain's own series comes from a number of talented veterans who all have something different to say about house and techno. That, in itself, is something to appreciate these days. Electric Indigo, whose been balling with the likes of Berlin's DJ Hell since the early 00's, launches a cautious, minimalistic techno experimenting through "Registers", followed by Stefan Rein's bleepy techno tool "Panther" - the sort of bomb you'd expect to hear in the pit at about 4am on a Sunday morning. The B-side features Macro's and Don't Be Afraid's RRoxymore, with "Tropicalcore", a comparatively more sparse and kinetic rhythm track that replaces the drones and pads in favour of ritualistic dance elements in the form of drums; Boris & Fiedel's "Div'hain" closes the eighth chapter of the series with a driving, menacing blur of 4/4 drums and gently acidic bass waves. Excellent.

Review: Felix K's Hidden Hawaii is now a staple of Berlin-style techno, but describing it as such doesn't really do the label its full justice. That's because this isn't just another bunch of relentless club tracks; instead, the label has always been careful to release material that is prone to opening one's mind and allowing the techno genre to broaden its general outlook. This year, Felix K himself, alongside frequent associate DB1, have been focussing heavily on their latest Elemnt moniker, and this new EP is the latest iteration of this project. Split from 1-4, each mix of "Water" offers something that's just out of reach, a blend of morphing, techno-reminiscent sounds that never quite manage to take a full shape, or dissolve into straight-edged dance music. The hollowness, and the kinetic energy within that, is what we've always loved about this fine imprint, and we urge you to find that same piece of inspiration.

  3. Animal Print - "The Last Night Of Laura Palmer" (6:47)
Review: Following up a powerful EP in the series' last edition by Brazilian superstar ANNA, Kompakt's Speicher imprint returns with more surefire techno to energise the dancefloor on edition 102. Longtime friends turned studio companions, Enzo Elia (of Balearic Gabba Soundsystem fame) and Musumeci join forces for the first time on "Gothic Safari" and indeed it's quite the nefarious journey - full of tension and suspense and perfect for dancefloor drama. Newcomer from Grenoble, La Marine, delivers the hypnotic minimal tech-house of "Flash," calling to mind the sounds of Dominik Eulberg or Andre Kraml from the mid-noughties. More mysterious faire awaits you on Animal Print's "The Last Night Of Laura Palmer" - a dose of brooding, Bolivian darkwave theatrics, borrowing from EBM, Italo and techno: all at the same time.
