  4. Track 4 (6:32)
Review: Shadowy producer E-GZR set tongues wagging three years ago with a forthright debut EP on Sex Tags offshoot Wania. Here the publicity-shy producer returns to action with more untitled doses of Metalurgic Funk. Interestingly, all four untitled cuts boast subtle variations on the same trippy, mind-altering electronic motif, with only the style and intensity of the rhythms below changing across the course of the EP. It's an interesting approach, inspired either by reggae style "versioning" or, given the hypnotic nature of the lead line, a Steve Reich style sequence of minimalist movements. All four cuts are hazy, locked-in concoctions designed for pitch-black basements and hot, sweaty rooms; in other words, heavyweight body music for altered minds.

  2. Figure Of State (Doppelate remix) (6:56)
  3. Stokey Waltz (4:58)
  4. Stokey Waltz (Pepe remix) (4:50)
Review: Fresh from a fine vinyl debut on Let's Go Swimming, William Earl pops up on freshly minted label Cherub. There's much to admire here, too, not least the fluttering, sunrise-ready melodies, dreamy chords and rolling deep house grooves of opener "Figure of Skate". Doppelate doffs a cap to the Vancouver style of new age deepness on his fine remix of the same track, before Earl serves up a "Stokey Waltz". This hot-stepping concoction packs a punch thanks to its loose and sweaty drum machine programming and some trippy, effects-laden vocal samples. Pepe remixes, craftily combining the futurist sonics and farsighted ethos of Detroit with the drifting melodic warmth of vintage Italian dream house.

Review: Earthen Sea goes by the name of Jacob Long when he's out of the studio, and out in the real world. This is for good reason, too, as his alias is just about as dreamy and hazy as one can get without taking a heavy load of tranquillisers. He's back on Ital's Lover's Rock label - the man himself has featured on Workshop, just in case you didn't know - with eight pieces of foolproof electronic psychedelia. "Entrance" sets the seen with cinematic drones, and opens up the doors to a rugged and loose collection of pseudo house tracks. Not really for the dancefloor, but equally not tame enough to be listened to on headphones, Earthen Sea's mood is energetic yet melancholic. Ambient and abstraction is mixed up with steely percussion, and locked grooves. We love this stuff, it's for the dreamers...

  1. Eastern Renaissance - "42A 19' 53 N"
  2. Mike Parker - "Night Of 21 Hours"
  3. Echologist - "Burn Permit"
  4. Stanislav Tolkachev - "The Right Side Of Hell"
Review: Though largely a platform for full artist releases, Mike Parker's Geophone label does dabble in the occasional various artist release and the last one (GPH19) really set the bar high with contributions from Voices From The Lake, Stanislav Tolkachev and that sensational Shifted remix of Parker. For this latest issue, Tolkachev is invited back to the label and he provides a chaotic "The Right Side Of Hell" which sounds like X-101 gone wrong (in a good way), while Eastern Renaissance's "42A 19' 53 N" is like hearing Warp's LFO mixed together with Prologue techno. Echologist, aka Brandon Moeller, provides a beat down and pulsating "Burn Permit" - and as you'd expect, Mike Parker throws down some deep and throbbing modulations on "Night Of 21 Hours".

  1. EBB & Akcept - "Wild Wood" (5:28)
  2. EBB - "Sun Drips" (4:30)
  3. EBB - "Yearning" (4:58)
Review: Destination New Zealand: Nomine's no rules imprint Fox & Hound continues to delve deep into that fertile space between techno and bass music around 120 - 130 BPM and this time he's heading down under. For three devilishly dark, textured and angular compositions. Akcept joins the fray for the lead track, adding a touch of dubby warmth before we're smashed in the features with the Drexcyian decays and screams of "Sun Drips" and taken deep into the dubspace abyss for the finale "Yearning". Ebb, Akcept, Fox & Hound; two artists and one label that are essential for all bass radars right now.

  4. Track 4 (5:24)
Review: More faceless techno on offer, this time from the mysterious Echelon. That's it, once we've got some clues on who they are, we'll be sure to let you know! Starting out with the tunneling heads down techno hypnotism of the first track, followed by a more soulful/retro infused affair on the second track, which is full of immaculately programmed 'first wave Detroit' style rhythms and euphoric synth work. On the flip, we're back to the program on the slow burning trance induction of the last two tracks; the fourth in particular is the kind of strobe-lit and seething adrenaline you could imagine the mighty Boris hammering out at one of his infamous closing sets at Berlin's infamous Berghain.

  1. Ectro Usic - "Kratal" (Upspeed mix) (6:17)
  2. A Burger - "Device C" (DJ Sotofett 808 club mix) (8:32)
Review: Legendary Austrian experimental label Laton has been kickstarted back into action for the first time since 2015 - the last release being DJ Sotofett 's TDD-DDRR-IPP MIX. The Sex Tags Mania boss returns to hand in a moody smack electro remix of Andreas Burger's "Device C" from 1996, while the mysterious Ectro Usic delivers one of the more innovative electro tracks we've heard in a while. "Kratal" (Upspeed mix) is a mean and distorted mutation, that's easy on the more oft-used detroit cliches but heavy on the distortion/overdrive and getting 'off the grid' in aggressive fashion.

  1. Siren
  2. Mermaid
  3. Syrizo
Review: Having emerged with a distinctly pastoral brand of techno on labels such as M_Rec and Silent Season over the past few years, Edanticonf now makes his way over to Cinematic Recordings to explore further realms of emotionally rich, texturally developed techno not bound exclusively to the dancefloor. "Siren" swirls in a flurry of brightly defined synth lines, from amorphous pads to sweeping strings, with a dash of optimism thrown in to make for a thoroughly sweet confection. "Mermaid" has a more dramatic tone, even if the plush layering of sounds is still in full effect, while "Syrizo" takes on an almost Echocord quality with its strafing chords and immense heft of production.

  1. The Drifter (7:27)
  2. Last Seen Leaving (6:41)
  3. Never Somewhere (6:11)
Review: Aside from his own Edit Select Records, Anthony MacKinnon aka Edit Select has been a big player in some very big labels like Prologue and Ostgut Ton throughout the years. The present Modularz has also been a core driver of the man's deep-minded techno frameworks, and this new EP feels like a return to form. Opening the skies is "The Drifter", a classic slice of headstrong techno spewing with bleeping atmospherics and propelled forwards by a sleek, tenebrous gust of ambience. On the flip, "Last Seen Leaving" heads deeper into the whirlpool thanks to a hypnotic groove, and "Never Somewhere" offers a much needed dose of acid to inject a little nerves into the equation. That's us enjoying ourselves in case you hadn't understood...

  3. Ultra Modern Art - "In Microcosm" (5:58)
  4. Ultra Modern Art - "Brave New World" (5:13)
Review: Proper old school Detroit-style techno here, the type that calls to mind first wave innovators such as Model 500, Derrick May and 3MB courtesy of Scott Edward Hodgson. The UK producer came up in the early '90s a few years after the aforementioned, releasing some soulful Motor City inspired jams via his cult Beau Monde and Out Of Orbit imprints. The releases fetch exorbitant prices on the second hand market, but thanks to Berlin's Libertine and now Le Loup's Shadowplay imprint: here we have some unearthed sleeper classics. On the A side the funked up hi-tech soul of "Access Activists" represents a true zeitgeist of early techno that's really hard to reproduce these days - try getting a groove like this out of your AIRA, kid! On the flip are two tracks from Hodgson's other known alias Ultra Modern Art. The uplifting flavour of "In Microcosm" calls to mind similar anthems of the day like "Nude Photo" or any remix by Atkins under his 'Magic Juan' alias. By contrast, the deep and introspective acid of "Brave New World" offers up something a bit more serious and contemplative. Mind blowing stuff! Hodgson is still active to this day and runs the Art Edit imprint / studio, out of Bath in Somerset.
