  1. Lose My Rhythm
  2. Suffocation
  3. The Blacksmith
  4. Lose My Rhythm (Scott Fraser remix)
Review: Having first stepped out on Scissor & Thread and Holding Hands, Desert Sound Colony now bring their full-fat, guitartronic sound to Snap, Crackle & Pop. "Lose My Rhythm" is a monster of a track with an acid backbone that would sit right on a Factory Floor release, garnished with garage guitar twang and new wave vocals. "Suffocation" is a more playful jam that doesn't slouch on the production either - DSC straddle song structures and dance dynamics with ease. "The Blacksmith" brings a more bludgeoning, broken rhythmic slant to the group and the impact is just as visceral. Then Scott Fraser steps up to remix "Lose My Rhythm" and turns it into a lithe club track for the late hours when reality has fully slipped away from the floor.

  4. Glixen (feat Baby Rollen) (6:26)
Review: For the first release on his new label, Touch From A Distance, Berghain and PBar stalwart Nick Hoppner has recruited Holding Hands chief and sometime Scissor and Thread regular Desert Sound Colony. The London-based producer is in fine form throughout the EP, serving up a trio of top-notch cuts. First up on the A-side is the punchy, deep electro-breaks rumble of "Fast Life", which is quickly followed by the deep space alien broken beats and bombastic UK garage bass of "Somehow I Talk". Over on the flip, the producer's UK bass influences are fused with the futurist intent of Detroit and the rubbery funk of South African Kwaito on "Finger Files", while EP closer "Glixen (feat Baby Rollen)" peppers a jazzy groove with rumbling bass and mangled organ chords.

Review: Desroi debuts on Avian.

Shifted's Avian label returns to fore with a heady, five track offering from German producer, Desroi.

In keeping with the label's finely tuned aesthetic concerns, the music draws from a reduced palette - keeping the colours muted & the tone driven and direct, focusing instead on drawing out pleasing textures & subtle rhythmic anomalies via intricate use of delay and reverb, to arrive at a sweet spot between dance-floor potency & the more cerebral posits of the Techno genre. Tethered at the base by cavernous low end, heady drum machine programming drives the work - often married with a single warping synth motif shifting about the sonic periphery, modulated carefully across the course of the recording's run time to create both moments of heads down introspection & outright hysteria.

Like much of the best work on the label, the music has a DIY quality that belies its complexity, but at the same time lends to its undoubted effectiveness. Desroi's ability to harness the full force of such a limited collection of elements is testament to the producer's skill as an artist within the genre, creating a powerful sense of cohesion on his Avian debut.

Review: In terms of prolific techno artists, few others can match the output of Los Angeles-based Adrian Sandoval who has jettisoned over 30 releases in the past six years as Developer with the majority arriving via his own Modularz label. In Pure Form sees Sandoval take the raw, tunnelling brand of techno he's made his own as Developer and apply it to the album format. The full digital version of the album contains some 25 "tracks direct from the Developer factory of techno" all of which are named "In Pure Form". The vinyl edition pares the selection down to 12 and spreads them across three 12"s with this first one a perfect introduction to what to expect should you wish for a taste of the full In Pure Form experience.

Review: You'll be hard pushed to find a producer as dedicated to his cause as Modularz boss Adrian Sandoval; instrumental in the development of LA's techno scene, Sandoval's tireless production ethic as Developer has seen him release over 30 records in the past six years so it feels like we are due an album from the man. Unsurprisingly, In Pure Form runs deep with tunnelling DJ tools with the full digital version of the album packing a rather impressive 25 tracks. This second of three 12" samplers for the album covers "In Pure Form" through tracks five to eight and does show that Sandoval can implement a lot of sonic diversity to the functional techno track.

Review: It's three for three in the 12" samplers to accompany Developer's long overdue (and quite long) debut album In Pure Form which naturally arrives via his own Modularz label. Whereas the standard route for a techno artist approaching the album format is to pad out their floor focused productions with a few ambient vignettes in a shallow attempt to offer depth, Developer's approach here is to simply show how good he is at what he does; namely, wall shaking techno of various shades. The full 25 track album might look a bit intimidating but all three of these 12"s does a great job of introducing Developer In Pure Form.

  5. DJ Surgeles - "Out Of This World" (2:01)
Review: US techno wizard Developer is back on his trusted Modularz imprint, this time alongside the lesser known DJ Surgeles, and the duo pack quite the punch with these five cold-hearted dance burners. Developer's "Infinite Numbers" opens on a bit of a cavernous tip, unleashing whole swarms of chilling bleeps over a stripped-back techno beat, and "Glimmer" ups the ante with yet more speed - and by that we mean velocity, not the powdered type! DJ Surgeles' "Hidden Places" opens the B-side with an echoing, hollow mass of drums and bass, while "Pulsating Orbs" bounces up and down with a distorted tone of voice, and "Out Of This World" steadies the ships by forming a thick, oozing layer of beatless ambience. A dish best served cold...

Review: As Until My Heart Stops turns 10, we head back across the Atlantic , this time to Boston and a stunning ep from the still hugely under rated DeViere.DeViere is a music producer and radio disc jockey (Progressive Black, 90.3 FM WZBC Newton) based in Boston, Massachusetts. He first came to our attention with the Transcendental Numbers ep on Jamal Moss' Mathematics label in 2012 and we've waited on each release ever since, including last year's huge Future Shock Disco ep (a collaboration with Jamal himself). Here DeViere presents 3 beautiful examples of his deep, soulful craft and a fitting way for UMHS to hit double figures.

MOM (12")

  1. MOM (10:14)
  2. The Final Driver (10:10)
Review: Bristol-based Londoner Semtek has been busy during 2015, ensuring a steady stream of releases on his Don't Be Afraid imprint. Following hyped EPs from Neville Watson, Mr Beatnick, Herva and Ben Cohen, he welcomes back DJ Bone under the Differ Ent guise. It's a sombre tone that sees the Detroit icon return too, with both these tracks produced by Bone in the immediate aftermath of his mother passing away after battling cancer. The 10-minute "MOM" is something of a throbbing, pulsating techno delight, with the Detroit veteran adding colossal organ chords and mind-altering electronics to a stomping, brain-melting groove. Bone goes deeper on similarly epic "The Final Driver", combining shuffling techno rhythms and alien electronics with warm, deep chords, and the melodic ethos of Omar-S style Detroit house.

  1. Soul Crush (4:15)
  2. Soul Crush (Adam X revision) (6:04)
  3. Soul Crush (Zoviet France Virtual mix) (13:13)
Review: Unlike seminal Vancouver EBM/industrialists Skinny Puppy, Digital Poodle had only a cult following in Toronto and some parts of the North American continent; a real shame considering their impressive body of work. However, tracks such as 1995's "Head Of Lenin" got some international airplay, not to mention being played at quite a few goth clubs back in the day (not that we'd know, of course!). Finally there's a a renewed enthusiasm around them among a new generation of fans and die-hard nostalgists alike. 1992's Soul Crush" gets a worthy reissue on local analogue freak Solvent's Suction imprint and gets a some pretty nifty reworks. Sonic Groove main man Adam X serves up a pounding, droning and hypnotic rendition that stands in stark contrast to the slow and steely funk groove of the original. Also worthy of mention is British legends Soviet France and their "Virtual Mix" a B side to the original release which is 13 minutes of epic ambient house bliss.

  4. Program 76 (7:23)
Review: Franco Digregorious first popped up on My Own Jupiter in the autumn of 2016, impressing all and sundry with an expansive album of electro, techno and IDM jams that had been recorded over the course of a decade. This follow-up EP is similarly inclined and just as impressive. There's a bustling, intergalactic rave feel to opener "Inner Traveller", which sees Digregorious pepper a driving but tactile groove with fizzing electronics and razor-sharp rave stabs, while "Punto De Encaje" pits the mind-altering, acid-fired madness of Rephlex's "braindance" series against the cascading melodiousness of B12 or the Black Dog. He continues in a similar vein on "Inner Sancta Sanctorum", before charging off into alien electro territory via EP highlight "Program 76".

Cat: SL 5. Rel: 25 Jun 18
  1. Iso Grifo
  2. Lava
  3. Round
Review: In the field of minimal house reissues, this is a big deal. Perlon main man Dimbiman doesn't appear on wax often, but when he does he makes it count. This early release on Baby Ford's seminal Pal SL was originally out in 1998, when minimal house was a vague concept at best on the most outer reaches of dance music. "Iso Grifo" itself remains a masterclass of spine-chilling space and perfectly strange sonic matter, while "Lava" pushes the notion of reduction dance music to its absolute limit. "Round" is an even more immersive affair that hides many subtle layers within its seemingly simple construct. Quite simply groundbreaking stuff, and highly sought after so don't sleep on it.

Review: Acht! Ostgut's Zehn 12" sampler draws ever closer to the end of its campaign and its been a pleasure to see some of these records arrive at Juno HQ replete with distinctive sleeve art. The German speakers among you will know this is the eighth edition and brandishes productions from Din, Fiedel and Tobias. For the uninitiated, DIN is in fact Marcel Fengler and Efdemin with "Mono" a fine introduction to this fledgling creative partnership - hopefully more is coming on the mighty Ostgut Ton! "Probe-806" is a great slab of Fiedelness, pulling for elements of funk, electro, acid and even boogie in the German's inimitable muscular style whilst Tobias heads off in a more minimalist direction on "Like A Drug".
