  1. Phason Jazz (7:59)
  2. Mr Dewey D (6:35)
  3. Rhythmic Soundscapes (5:57)
Review: Spanish hi-tech soul maestro Eduardo De La Calle on the true home of it: Planet E - and it's about friggin' time if we do say so! Over the last several years, the Madrid native has respectfully borrowed from the traditions of first and second wave Motor City sounds, but he undeniably carved his own path via his respected Analog Solutions imprint. The Icosahedrite EP features three life affirming explorations in techno-soul. From the the galaxian Jupiter jazz of the A side, through to the classic funked up futurism that pays homage to greats like Transmat and Metroplex like on "Mr Dewey D". There is also the more powerful and straight ahead functionalism of "Rhythmic Soundscapes" which is just as heads down and DJ ergonomic as his aforementioned AS material. This follows up some great releases by him in 2017, on the likes of Anemone, Forbidden Colors and Monogram Systems.

  1. Orpheus (7:32)

  3. Heal Me Motherfucker (6:20)
  4. Oceans Filled With Lines (5:31)
Review: Tabernacle turn their attention to a new talent for their next 12", introducing the sound of the mysterious Billy Ray De La Haye across a rock-solid four-tracker. There's a joyous mood that radiates out of EP opener "Orpheus" that's neatly offset with the rough hardware finish that typifies Tabernacle output. Either way the sound makes you want to delve in further, and playful Italo tones on "Truth's Protective Layers" reward the adventurous listener. "Heal Me Motherfucker" finds the psychedelic melodies swirling to the fore on a bed of delay and "Oceans Filled With Lines" sends things in a blissful acid-meets-new age direction, and very fine it is too.

  2. Le Mystere - "On The Beat" (5:18)
  3. Agaric - "Cute Acid" (4:41)
  4. Le Mystere - "On The Dub" (5:20)
Review: A couple of years back, Music Pour La Danse released a superb anthology of works by key Belgian new beat producer Rembert De Swet, better known as Ro Maron. This 12" is meant as a kind of partner to that release and features a trio of sought-after cuts from De Swet's La Mystere collaboration with Ferre Baellen (AKA Bhab), plus a bonus acid throw-down he released as Agaric (the fantastic "Cute Acid", whose wild TB-303 lines work in perfect harmony with the producer's delicate beats and ghostly synthesizer melodies). Interestingly, both "On The Beat" and "On The Dub" are far more Balearic in feel than many De Swet projects - think chunky, laidback breakbeats, picturesque melodies and sunny chord sequences - while "Opus 303" wraps lilting, almost melancholic chords and trippy acid lines around a similarly break-driven groove.

  1. This (7:40)
  2. Hear Of Mine (7:43)
  3. This (Lewis Fautzi remix) (5:31)
Review: Charlotte De Witte has been threatening to break into the big time ever since her earliest releases on Tiga's Turbo label back in 2015. Following a prolific 2017 in which she released a string of acclaimed EPs, the Belgian producer makes her first appearance on Spanish imprint Suara. Check first the relentless, full throttle techno heaviness of A-side "This" - think foreboding voices, constantly building drum machine percussion and occasional creepy electronics - before turning your attention to the strangely beguiling "This Heart of Mine", where solo vocal snippets echo over another bombastic rhythm track. To round off a fine EP, Lewis Fautzi delivers an intoxicating rework of "This" that's in the same sonic ball park as Kowton's remix of Throwing Shade's "Chancer" on Happy Skull.

  2. You Disco I Freak (Silent Servant version) (6:08)
  3. Metal Box (Rudolf Klorzeiger Mercury Box rework) (10:13)
Review: On this surprise 12" single, man of the moment Silent Servant (AKA Sandwell District collective member Juan Mendez) provides "remix" and "version" interpretations of Death In Vegas's "You Disco I Freak", one of the standout cuts from 2016's Transmission LP. The "Remix" kicks things off, with Mendez creating a trippy, mind-altering mood by layering a nagging synth loop and distant voices over a shuffling but energetic rhythm track. His "Version" is far wilder and more angular, with notable EDM notes and an unrelenting, shape-shifting acid bassline. Over on side B, Rudolph Klorzeiger gets busy with "Metal Box", re-imagining it as an epic chunk of atmospheric, industrial-influenced ambient that increases in intensity throughout.

  1. 64 Ways To Rob A Friend (4:40)
  2. 90 Feelings (6:57)
  3. A Place To Stay (live mix) (8:17)
Review: Tomas More's December alias has gone from strength to strength, kicking off on Blackest Ever Black, Where To Now? and In Paradisum only to hop on to Mannequin and Jealous God before landing here on Helena Hauff's Return To Disorder label. On the basis of that CV, you should know full well that this is an artist who favours dark, deviant dance music with a generous lashing of industrial, EBM and electro, and he doesn't disappoint. "64 Ways To Rob A Friend" is a freaky but utterly fun romp laced with ghoulish vocals and underpinned by a driving one-note bassline. "90 Feelings" is more malevolent, channeling the spirit of Ministry and reducing it down to a death march, while the live mix of "A Place To Live" comes on with a New Beat ferocity that's hard to resist.

  1. Mme Hayo (Deep Terror mix)

  3. Mme Hayo (William Kouam Djoko Dreammix)
Review: REPRESS: The second release from the Hlanganani label lives up to it's MO to provide a platform for talented producers from South Africa to shine, focusing here on Deep Sixty, aka young and fast-rising producer Johannesburg producer Thabiso Mamogwa. Back in 2010, the producer made it to London to take part in the Red Bull Music Academy, which is when the HLANG team first heard the tracks that make up the Mme Hayo EP whilst some studio time on the same trip with Todd 'Soundmurderer' Osborn resulted in the "Thursday Nights" track which Mamogwa previously self-released. In addition to Deep Sixty's own 'Deep Terror' mix of "Mme Hayo", the label have coaxed some fine remixes out of Esa and William Kouam Djoko.

  1. Basic Cycle (7:01)
  2. Overdrum (6:16)
Review: Following a surprise outing on Transmat this time last year, Deep'a and Biri return to the Black Crow label they established back in 2013. This time round, the Tel Aviv duo has delivered two distinctly different cuts. "Basic Cycle" sees them fuse classic, Motor City techno percussion and chords with the kind of looped riffs that were once a feature of late '80s house cuts from Detroit. As a result, the rack has a real warehouse-friendly feel, suggesting that it will suit clubs with big sound systems and even bigger rooms. Flipside "Overdrum" is a no-nonsense techno workout built around their impeccable percussion programming, and very little else. It works largely due to the dense layers of drums they employ, including some particularly carnival-friendly hits.

  2. O-Ring (5:22)
  3. Calzer8 (6:11)
  4. Nightwish (5:13)
Review: Dedicated hardware hassler and devoted house head Alessandro Pasini has been working tirelessly to push his agenda of warm, classically-rooted house and techno played out live on an impressive spread of equipment. This second release on his Ascii Records label continues that mission in fine style, kicking off with the slinky acidities of "Commando" before diving into the tom-tastic immersion of "O-Ring". On the B-side "Calzer8" takes a more sprightly approach with its bouncy jacking drums and zippy synth lines, and then "Nightwish" takes things in a refined, deep direction without compromising on serious strut-ability. This is outboard house music how it should be done.

  1. Annapurna (11:25)
  2. Makalu (5:50)
  3. Cho Oyu (5:32)
Review: New York City's Deepak Sharma is back! The main man behind Hidden Recordings has served up some great releases from the likes of JC Laurent and Dieter Krause in recent times: but it's quite fitting that the head honcho take up the reins on the label's 32nd release: and it's a good one! The Annapurna EP has definitely got you sorted for tunnelling and strobe-lit techno weapons. The title track is a straight ahead DJ tool on the trippy side. It's as effective as anything Pole Group have done of late, while "Makalulu" hones in on that noisy/industrialised strain of hypnotic techno, similar to the Avian label. Finally on the flip is the most euphoric affair in the form of 'Cho Oyu". A stripped back warehouse jam that simply lets the power of that cavernous kick drum work with those gated pads to sublime effect.

  1. Luxury 3
  2. Luxury 4
Review: Even by dub techno standards, Rob Modell seems to be unfeasibly productive. There's been a veritable deluge of Deepchord-related releases this year - all up to the Detroit-based producer's impeccable standards, of course - with the first Luxury 12" on Soma arguably standing out. This follow-up is predictably strong, with Modell expertly crafting two starry, melodic and admirably hypnotic compositions. Choose between the twinkling melodies, rolling chords and starlight grooves of "Luxury 3" and the bolder, more sci-fi tinged "Luxury 4", whose undulating percussion, fluid chords and dub-style live mixing guarantee eyes-wide-shut thrills.

Review: Few producers do the dub techno sound better than Rod Modell and on this second Atmospherica instalment, he shows why he is so revered. "Exploring The North" is dense and subdued, the hisses and crackles ebbing and flowing fluidly over a powerful sub-bass. "Pinewood Lodge" is more atmospheric and floaty, its chords flitting about like fireflies over a camp fire on the first night of autumn. Rounding out the release is "Shot Point". Immersive, hypnotic and ghostly, it washes through the speakers like waves crashing on a deserted beach at midnight. This is electronic music that is designed to get lost in.

  5. Blues (5:17)
Review: Sam Geiser aka Deetron serves up his first double pack EP on his label Character. The five tracks are the producer's take on house music from the viewpoint of an accomplished DJ of nearly twenty years. Having carved a long standing reputation in both the techno and house worlds, Geiser exposes another side of his personality here. Utilising soul, funk and hip-hop production techniques, the tracks are built on sampled material, much in the vein of his earlier and heavily charted tracks. "I Got To Have You" starts off the EP in fine form, this soulful number having the same energy as previous anthems like "I Cling". He then gets down with some superb hi-tech soul on the stylish "Take Me Higher" while loopy latin house gets its turn on the infectious "Supper In Casa Blanca"

  1. Travelling Through The Speed Of Music (8:42)
  2. Pulse (6:59)
  3. Flow (7:13)
Review: Mental Groove offshoot Music Pour La Danse has previously put out compilations of Orlando Voorn's finest early work, so it's little surprise to see them once against dipping into the Storied Dutchman's vast back catalogue. The Travelling EP first surfaced way back in 1994 and was the sole 12" Voorn recorded as Defence. A-side "Travelling Through The Speed of Music" is typical of the producer's work at that period of time, featuring bubbling, trance-inspired electronics, gentle acid lines, delay-heavy vocal snippets and oodles of Detroit techno influences. On the flipside, "Pulse" is similarly trippy and trancey (in the original sense of the term) with lighter beats and picturesque flourishes, while "Flow" is a luscious chunk of "intelligent techno"-era electro with subtle ambient house overtones.

Review: Quite how they never linked up before is hard to surmise, but finally UK techno veteran Kirk Degiorgio and UK techno institution Ferox come together to present a killer new EP that draws on the respective legacies of label and artist while presenting something new in the process. "I Have Seen Them In A Dream" is a bubbling, soulful cut that fuses acid lines with stately chord progressions, while "Blind To Revelation" takes a deeper turn into dubbed out percussion and nocturnal melodics. "Beholden" takes a slower, house-inflected turn into blissful pads and strings and then "The Infinite Tether" plots a course spacewards with some refined techno for the astrally-minded.

Review: Fachwerk boss Mike Dehnert never, ever fails to produce the goods. His unerring ability to produce concrete slabs of techno that are both sonically pummelling and captivating is almost with out match in contemporary techno. Here he continues the MD series with four pulsating tracks which serve as an ideal entree for the Dehnert album that is soon to arrive. A momentous kick is teased in and out expertly in "Track 1", before the pulsating thud of "Track 2" is engulfed in a subtle myriad of synth rips and barley there vocal snippets, which contrasts with the more precise drum pattern of "Track 3". The demented demon gargle that awaits you on "Track 4" will leave you fidgeting impatiently with anticipation for the full Dehnert album, due out in March.

  2. Me Too (5:11)
Review: Mike Dehnert's sublime output has been largely restricted to his own Fachwerk label over the last eight years, so it's surprisingly refreshing to see him branch out to other contemporary labels. His native Pampa imprint seems like the perfect place for his stripped-back shades of house music, and "How Close To Be", with its driving, fuzzed-out bassline makes for the perfect accompaniment to the tune's brooding vocal samples. On the B-side, "Me Too" is lo-fi in very sense of the word, once again dropping on a layer of eerie yet sentimental voices to take the track from odd to the utterly bizarre. In our eyes, that is a good thing...
