  2. Another Time (10:50)
  3. The Lesser Light (3:54)
Review: Hands up who gets the vintage sci-fi reference in Trevor Jackson's latest production alias? For the non-nerds amongst us, Dark There Were & Golden-Eyed is the name of both a legendary short story by Ray Bradbury and a famous London sci-fi bookshop of the 1970s. Musically, the three tracks Jackson has served up this time round tend towards the stripped-back and synthesizer-heavy. They were apparently recorded between 2010 and 2014 using a minimalist set-up of handpicked pieces of analogue gear. While the B-side contains a couple of formidably dark, odd and curious, soundtrack style excursions, it's the epic A-side, "Design Your Dreams" - a fluid, loved-up and hypnotic blend of Terry Riley style cyclical synthesizer motifs and subtle percussion - that stands out.

Review: Repitch are back everyone, look out! Ascion, D. Carbone and Shapednoise team up with longtime allies AnD on the final instalment of the Features series and it's as intense as you'd expect: not for the faint of heart! Five cuts of brutalist, bleak and greyscale modern industrial music that bears all the trademarks of each individual producer's sound. From harsh metallic textures and grating modular snarls to the most overdriven kick drums and sinister sci-fi atmospheres. Is this posse going out all guns blazing? You'd better believe it!

  2. Das Ding - "Life Is A Tool In The Hands Of Strangers" (4:04)
  3. DJ Overdose - "I See No Stars At Night" (4:16)
  4. DJ Overdose - "Potje Freaken" (4:55)
Review: The Go Finger label has been digging into the undergrowth of synthwave sounds and deviant electro for a few years now, more recently graduating from the tape scene to put out EPs of leftfield electronic adventures on wax. This EP in particular is quite something, calling on the vintage talents of Das Ding in all their eerie, warped, pulsing, analogue refinement. "Conun Drum" is a curiously playful trip through noirish cityscapes by way of strobing lead lines and militaristic machine beats, while "Life Is A Tool In The Hands Of Strangers" takes a more uptempo approach without losing the bombast of their melodic arrangements. Dutch electro champ DJ Overdose steps up for the B side, dropping the overcast and creeping "I See No Stars At Night" and the dishevelled robot beatdown "Potje Freaken".

  3. Invisible Line 3 (7:39)
  4. Invisible Line 4 (6:52)
Review: The mysterious Berlin based imprint Brenda returns with more tough, linear and greyscale techno cuts: not that you'd think so from the splendid cover... but hey! These solid workouts come courtesy of label boss Mike David (also one half of Company), a Canadian who has appeared previously on Rene Audiard's Supply Records and Drvg Cvlture's New York Haunted imprint: so that gives you a bit of an idea of what to expect. From fierce and functional DJ tools executed for maximum impact ("Invisible Line "1/3") or stripped back minimalism like on "Invisible Line 2" that lets the drums do the talking. For more heady and immersive material, the final track has you sorted for those tunnelling and hypnotic moments to help the crowd get weird. Great effort here!

Cat: PW 13. Rel: 20 Nov 17
  1. Acid Soup
  2. Daffodil
Review: Porn Wax makes a welcome return with more of that devilish deviant acid behaviour, splattered on a trademark hot pink 10" to let everyone know they mean business. Dawn Again takes the reins on the A-side with a fearsome beast known as "Acid Soup". It's an appropriate name, all sloppy drum lines and excessive FX to push the crowd to higher levels of psychedelic rave abandon. Rothmans' "Daffodil" on the flip is a more melodic affair, but no less intense in its straining arpeggios and dramatic synth breakdowns. With very different end results, both sides of this 12" champion the grubby, outboard approach to production as a means of attracting the freaks to the dancefloor.

  4. The Bounce (5:54)
  5. Surrender (feat Cat Yen) (2:26)
Review: Man of the moment Dax J is back with more doom laden and treacherous techno. The Monnom Black head honcho is this time launching The Invisible Man EP at us. Featuring on the A side we've got "The Wonk" but there's no Life & Death style melodies on this one: that stuff could only wish to be as fierce as this peak time adrenalizer. The title track is a rough acid techno stomper reminiscent of something on his last Shades Of Black album. On the flip "Wir Leben Fur Die Nacht" reminds us that yes he lives in Berlin, he most likely passed his Deutsch A1 class and indeed we do all live for the night etc but this sounds more like Sunday mass at Berghain: an industrial strength menace that is absolutely ferocious! A surprise addition is the dark and immersive ambient journey "Surrender" featuring Cat Yen's curious Chinese dialogue drenched in delay.

Cat: ERS 011. Rel: 01 Sep 14
  1. Snaker Charmer
  2. Take Me To Your Leader
  3. Shimmer
  4. Hold Me Take Me Leave Me
Review: The supremely talented William Burnett makes a belated return to Emotional Response, and this time he's got Brooklyn-based studio pal John Beall in tow. Those who enjoyed the duo's release on the L.I.E.S. white label series should lap up Shimmer. It hits hard from the off, with "Snaker Charmer" delivering a velvet-clad punch to the guts. It's techno right from the top drawer, with darting electronics and drawn out pads riding a thunderous groove. The title track is impressive, too, with surging electronics and throbbing synths riding a techno-tempo groove crafted out of an old hardcore breakbeat. There's some more considered fare on offer, too, with the shimmering ambience of "Hold Me Take Me Leave Me" completing a superb package.

  1. Slums Of Grand Central (7:54)
  2. Slums Of Grand Central (Tornhawked) (6:20)
  3. Slums Of Grand Central (rusted by Decor) (6:34)
Review: Daze makes a first appearance on Torn Hawk's Valcron Video label with a distinctive trio of adventurous jams hovering on the fringes of the dance. "Slums Of Grand Central" is certainly crafted with the party in mind, but it's a more introspective kind of get down for those who like popping at a slower tempo. Torn Hawk then takes the track to task with a tense revision that comes on like uneasy 90s electronica before Decor lays waste to the surroundings with a slamming remix that pushes into hard techno territory while retaining the wistful tones of the original.

  3. Under Current (6:51)
Review: More Harbour City Sorrow from the Frustrated Funk crew. The Rotterdam based label now presenting a reissue a decade on of Dcast Dynamics' The Giant Returns. This is a lesser known alias of Miami electro legend Shad Thomas Scott - who some of you may know of from his work as Gosub, Metal Beat or Phrunt in addition running the hugely underrated Isophlux imprint. From the noir-ish Dopplereffekt vibe of the title track, to the slowly submerging/deeply aquatic vibe of the lush "Under Current", Scott's classic works are still relevant as ever in today's newfound love of the electro sound.

  9. Damon Lamar - "Bermuda Triangle" (7:02)
  10. Chicago Skyway - "Edged Out" (6:04)
Review: Perpetual Rhythms is already well-regarded as a bastion of quality amongst contemporary Chicago house labels, and now they've downright sealed the deal with this mammoth compilation from a stellar cast of local cats. There's too many to all list in detail here, so focusing on the highlights, Dcee leads things in with the tumbling cosmic jazz leanings of "Suavecito," Hakim Murphy teases with a spacious and daring exploration in the liminal zone between ambient and house, and Obsolete Music Technology gets invigorating with the bouncy "High Top Fade." Those tracks alone are enough to deserve your hard earned, but there's reams of other excellent forward-facing Windy City jams to sink your teeth into.

  1. Derp Journal (6:03)
  2. Bogart Space (6:41)
  3. Good Day Bad Day (7:02)
  4. Flashmelo (7:07)
Review: Long time minimal techno pusher Franklin De Costa steps up to Jersey City label Green Village to thrown down a ruckus with four serious cuts of advanced house and techno. "Derp Journal" may be flippant in name, but the bassline it packs is not to be trifled with, nor the edgy drums and lashings of reverb. "Bogart Space" is a more house-minded affair, but it's still reaching to a contemplative space using unfamiliar sounds. "Good Day Bad Day" gets into a cyclical, psychedelic mood thanks to a trippy synth circling overhead, but then the EP gets dealt a tough finishing blow by the cranked up hustle of "Flashmelo", coming on like a crunchy mid 00s minimal jam of the highest order.

Review: Nigel "Perseus Traxx" Rogers last used the Ellis De Havilland alias back in 2013, simultaneously releasing a pair of EPs to launch the Bunker 4000 series. Three years on, he's set to do the same. This first EP (of two) contains a sextet of straight-to-tape machine jams that variously pay tribute to early acid house, wild and experimental jack-tracks, Larry Heard, Jamal Moss, and mind-bending industrial techno. The beats variously swing and bang, the acid lines spurt from the speakers at odd intervals, and tape hiss rises and falls in volume from track to track. Each of the six tracks is eminently playable; taken as a whole, 1 is a pleasingly forthright collection.

Review: The second part of Nigel "Perseus Traxx" Rogers' Ellis De Havilland double-header (his first since 2013's similarly formatted Born Out Of Cheapness & Frustration) continues where its' predecessor left off, with the producer showcasing more "straight to tape" hardware compositions. The seven tracks vary in tone, tempo and texture, from the druggy throb of "Track 1", and fierce-but-weird "Track 2", to the clicking, outer-space hypnotism of "Track 4", and Jamal Moss style acid onslaught "Track 6". They're all subtle variations on a theme, created with a relatively sparse selection of old drum machines, synths and samplers, but there's enough variety to keep things fresh and interesting.
