  3. We Go Back (Brame & Hamo remix) (6:18)
  4. We Go Back (Kiwi remix) (7:08)
Review: London's Loft Records are back with Bristol DJ/producer Crawford. His new killer "We Go Back" is an evocative tech house number that calls to mind the life-affirming vibes of classic Kompakt Records. It also receives a couple of decent remixes on the flip: first by rising British producer Kiwi and Irishmen Brame & Hamo of Splendour & Squalor fame. The latter's rendition is the true winner. A Detroit style hi-tech soul stomper, in the vein of Kevin Saunderson or Aril Brikha. Second original offering "Techno Rhumba" uses some hypnotic acoustic guitar melodies during the drop - which soon gives way to a woozy, slo-mo and heads down groove.

Nynyny (12")
Cat: CRWDSPCR 012. Rel: 29 Apr 16
  1. NYNYNY (6:02)
  2. Merce (6:16)
Review: Versatile and Tigersushi icon Joakim Bouaziz usually meanders along housier streams, but his Cray76 alias is reserved for his more rough-edged, techno-leaning productions for the big room. Once again appearing on Tigersushi subsidiary Crowdspacer, the latest Cray76 12" leads with "NYNYNY", a bleepy chunk of sonic dynamite that pounces along aggressively with the help of wavey melodies; "Merce" on the B-side sticks to the pseudo acid techno, but drops in a load of disconcerting radio vocals and a bit of 'dilly-ding dilly-dong' on the bleeps. Fine techno cuts for the mind.

  1. The Violinist (5:44)
  2. Return (5:11)
  3. Blacklord (5:36)
Review: With Jealous God, Eerie and L.I.E.S on his C.V. they don't come much more approved that Domenico Crisci, but few would be prepared for the onslaught that leaps out of this first release on Summa Cum Laude. "The Violinist" champions distortion as a weapon, running everything through a fuzz pedal in a most unrelenting of fashions. It's certainly not for the feint-hearted, and all the more powerful with it. Meanwhile "Return" would sound brutal in any other context were it not for what came before, all slamming, grubby drums and the noises that splay off them. "Blacklord" them manages to push the vibe further back into the red with a searing throwdown to finish the EP off in a masterful display of intensity.

Review: Southern Italian duo Crossing Avenue were a surprising highlight at last year's Berlin Atonal Festival in Berlin. While not much was known of the pair at the time, it soon became apparent why they were signed to Donato Dozzy and Neel's revered imprint - their high fidelity interpretations of deeply hypnotic techno. Indeed the material on their Avantieri EP features exactly the kind of entrancing, mentalist adventures that you could expect the Italian figureheads to play in their own acclaimed sets, from the strobe-lit tribalism of "Laguna" which would make even Refracted or Dorisburg stand up and notice, to the introspective B side cuts like the tunnelling, freefall vortex of "Vilipendio" or "Mekong" - a slow-motion raindance for martians.

  1. Another View
  2. Together In The Dark
  3. Together In The Dark (Inga Mauer remix)
  4. Another View (The Golden Filter Revision)
Review: Snap, Crackle & Pop does the business once again as Berlin-based producer Curses steps up with the distinctly 1980s new wave stylings of "Another View". It's the kind of track that will have lovers of early The Cure, Sisters Of Mercy et al dancing in a hazy fever dream where early goth and indie meets with contemporary beats. "Together In The Dark" makes the point even clearer with a brooding trip through languid guitar, beyond the grave vocals and scuffed drums. Inga Mauer takes an entirely different tact with her remix of the latter track, conjuring up a particularly chilling acid daemon to jangle the nerves before The Golden Filter spook out "Another View" with heavy doses of reverb.

  1. Convergence (6:42)
  2. Maniac Lover (8:07)
  3. Luminous Seed Domain (7:56)
Review: One of the joys of Dan Curtin's far-sighted and futurist brand of techno is that his records never seem to age. The "When Worlds Align" EP was first released nearly two decades ago, but its three tracks have not aged one bit. This Only One reissue replicates the original track listing, starting with the rubbery techno-funk of "Convergence", where fluttering flute lines and darting Motor City synthesizer flourishes ride an action-packed bassline and swinging drums. "Maniac Lover" is a deliciously melodious chunk of loose-limbed tech-jazz full of machine drum solos and jammed-out keys, while "Luminous Seed Domain" is an ear-pleasing exercise in bespoke techno/deep house fusion.

  2. Lipstick Information (6:20)
  3. Third Skin (Steffi remix) (6:33)
  4. Third Skin (The Hacker remix) (6:11)
Review: Having spent much of the last 12 months furiously re-issuing classic Italo-disco bombs, Dark Entries has finally got round to releasing some more contemporary cuts. The man behind this EP is Victor Lenis AKA Cute Heels, a Barcelona-based Colombian who last appeared on the imprint in 2014. As usual, the two new productions showcased here see him explore a range of vintage electronic music influences, presenting them in a typically stylish and authentic way. "Third Skin" melds the muscular sweatiness of EBM to the jackin' energy of Chicago acid, while "Lipstick Information" offers a master-class in dark Italo-disco and early Detroit techno fusion. Steffi and The Hacker both give the title track a thorough going over, with the former's deliciously hypnotic, psychedelic take being particularly potent.

Review: Rather unexpectedly, the third CVX release, to date, comes through on Berceuse Heroique, an imprint which seems to be following and replicating just about any genre or sub-culture form the past, making it a perfect example of post-post-modernism in action. Zibaldone III of CVX, a serious previously restricted to the Laura Lies In label, is undoubtedly a wild and wicked concoction of nebulous sonics that are all driven by a toxic, merciless percussion which spews from all angles with a certain mechanical fashion. It's an honourable third edition of the series, and we hope this marks a beginning of a new dawn for CVX. Wicked style.

Review: Next up on Lobster Theremin is the debut of Cyborg 95. However, word on the street is that it's 'an anonymous old-school electro project'. There are definitely some aquatic, dystopian.. Almost Drexciyan comparisons to be drawn - in the tradition of the genre's Detroit originals. Majestic futurist themes are explored on dramatic sonic journeys like "Cyborg's Theme" or "Def6", introverted late-night soundtracks in the vein of the legendary Gerald Donald can be heard on "Tour De France" while the breakneck fury of the title track was so intense that we had to double check that the record was actually on the right speed.

  1. Requite (6:07)
  2. Chime (6:00)
  3. Brave New Wave (7:32)
  4. Mackabee (4:17)
Review: The Cyclist fires up his Tape Throb label for a sixth instalment of grubby, wayward sonics that pivot around a danceable axis while reaching to a higher plain of musical expression. There are plenty of psyched-out overtones bursting out of "Requite", and there's a rugged groove cutting its way through the dense thicket of ferric noise. "Chime" has a more tender approach in some regards, sporting a tropical lilt and sparser arrangement, but there's still plenty of space for artful distortion. "Brave New Wave" is a brilliant mish mash of peppy electro, early synth pop weirdness and that overall Cyclist sound that only he can conjure up. "Mackabee" goes in on that particular quality to finish the EP off in an evocative ambient lick sending out an SOS across a shoreline of grubby, tidal dub washes.

Review: Irish tape throb enthusiast The Cyclist adds Bristol house bastions Hypercolour to his discography with this fine four-track 12", Pressing Matters, which features a remix from Pampa and Kompakt legend Robag Wruhme! The title track is a fine example of The Cyclist's warped charm, conjuring bendy bass lines, faltering breakbeats and wavy synth lines over seven delightfully heat-treated minutes. The Robag Wruhme is just as epic, sounding like a lost breakbeat artefact dug up for gleeful 21st century consumption. "Born In '92" adds plenty of pirate radio chatter into it's deep and spectral house bump, whilst Tanaya Harper's vocals lend a palpable edge to the brittle garage swing of closer "Push."

Review: Madrid's Jose Rico of Downbeat Records has also previously released on Semantica and ELEVE and now teams up with Leonid as Cygnuss for some soulful deep techno on Night Drive. Freebeat has previously brought us Chicago deep4life legends Chris Gray and Da Rand Land: so they know what's what! We particularly enjoyed the high tech soul of "Gamma" and "Delta"; emotive tracks which were reminiscent of the classic vibes of Transmat or Strobe; you'd swear they were lost tapes from 1990. The beatless journey "Ycyg" has that early 90's kind of classic vibe too but more of the UK bleep techno variety. There's a right stomper in the form "Arsec" whose tough as nails 909 and 303 workout is reminiscent of the best of Plus 8. Definitely one for the nostalgists, matter of fact it's highly recommended!

Review: The most impressive characteristic of this 12" is the further development in sound processing (filtering and modulation), which seems to have no relation to anything else within the genre. 'Inversion' is a rhythm backed journey into the world of coloured noise, while the other side delivers a repetitive, gloomy and metallic sounding ambient piece. Tip!

Review: It's been a little while since we last heard from Donnell Knox, but he's back in action finally on his regular haunt Sonic Mind with some of that evergreen US techno tackle that he's forged a long and winding career out of. "No Time" is steeped in the smoky pads of the Motor City, with a rugged rhythm section and errant bleeps thrown in to seal the deal. "Rat Race" takes things in a more housey direction, but there's still a certain mysticism that reaches beyond the average club banger. "Sick Mind" continues the theme, but ties more knots in the programming to make for another essential slice of techno, and then "Repetition" finishes the job with a razor sharp slice of sky-scraping hardware science.

  2. DJ Who - "Give A Little More" (Mike Parker remix) (7:00)
  3. Karius & Baktus - "Wurzelbehandlung" (6:10)
Review: Maceo Plex's respected Ellum Audio imprint returns, almost a year on from his acclaimed Solar LP and the launch of his new Lone Romantic label. Much like the aforementioned endeavours, the Under The Radar Sampler 1 EP further explores the American producer's love of old school sounds - namely Detroit and classic electro. He's put together a package of heavy hitting records that went under the radar here, featuring some prolific artists. He manages to rope in Motor City underdog Donnell Knox - a veteran producer of over 20 years and the man behind the underrated Sonic Mind imprint. His contribution is the fierce hi-tech soul antics of "Psalm 83:13" taking you all the way back to the '90s when the sound of Underground Resistance, Plus 8 and Strobe reigned supreme. On the flip is a blast from the past in the form of DJ Who's "Give A Little More" (Mike Parker remix) which proves that Parker was a right mentalist already back in '96: this is one serous acid-electro scorcher. German duo Karius & Baktus released the sought after "Wurzelbehandlung" back in 2000 and its introspective dub techno sound (scraped right off the factory floor) hasn't dated one bit!

Review: Heidelberg legend Dirk Mantei is back with his first 12-inch in 21 years under the D-Man alias. Also renowned for the being the man behind the legendary Mannheim clubbing institution HD800, Mantei's recording career was much more prolific in the early '90s - when he recorded under sveerla projects with David 'Move D' Moufang in the groups Kin Sun, More From The Posse and O.B.C. There's definitely sincere old school charm to the collection of tracks on Workshop 25, which were said to be produced between 2012 - 2014 for an online music project - he produced up to 52 tracks. The label has certainly handpicked up some fine moments from the project: it's a diverse collection of grooves featuring moments of introverted acid experimentation, slo-mo hypnotic techno and exactly the type of understated/dusty deep house that's in line with the label's usual aesthetic.

As d_func. he's contributed many times to Marcel Heese's Finitude label, and now he's back to pay tribute to UK free party techno legends Spiral Tribe. Kowalski's own interpretation may be more minimal and hypnotic than the wild, raucous energy Spiral Tribe was best known for, but his trancey approach comes on like a nostalgic vision into the early 90s, while also aligning with the modern masters such as Donato Dozzy and Peter Van Hoesen.

Patience (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: FIN 004. Rel: 02 Feb 15
  1. Patience
  2. Patience (Lewis Fautzi remix)
Review: "Patience" is Finitude Musics fourth release. Once again label boss Marcel Heese teamed up with d_func. aka Alexander Kowalski. Most people will surely remember his classics on labels such as Tresor Records or Kanzleramt. The Jeff Mills influence can't be denied on the A-Side. Remix on B-Side comes from up-and-coming Portuguese producer Lewis Fautzi (Soma, Figure) who has turned "Patience" into a 303-laden floorbomb.

  4. Partydaze

Review: Having already seen The Long Weekend issued via regular outlet M>O>S Recordings, inaugurating the 1210 series from Belfast upstarts One Electronica and appearing on fledgling NYC label Ansatz, D'Marc Cantu's debut for the consistently adventurous Desire represents his fourth release for 2014. This Parisian Summer EP dates back to Cantu's experience playing the Weather Festival in Paris last year where apparently three of the tracks on here were created ahead of his performance, and you can really hear the live and raw flow of energy in "Partydaze". The deep and snare whacking "Uneven" was originally recorded it several years ago as is lifted from his personal archive which offers the EP a calming change up, but really this record is about the dance!

  2. Body Jak (5:12)
  3. Gear Shift (5:02)
  4. Odd Feel (5:55)
Review: Tom Dicicco's Run Out Run label has proved wilfully hard to pin down since the Northampton resident first launched it in 2013. Alongside his own material, the label has sought out everyone from Killawat to John Osborn via October and Borai over the course of its output to date. Ann Arbor's D'Marc Cantu was a fine addition to the Run Out Run cause with last year's Car Type 12" and he now returns to complete his automobile themed miniseries for the label with Gear Shift. Leading with "It's Sex", Cantu heads straight into the sort of manic drum programming and heavy acid we have come to expect from him, all topped off with a luridly looped titular vocal hook. The intensity does not let up one iota across the subsequent three tracks either - this is some of Cantu's fiercest material committed to wax in some time.
