  1. Artifice 2 (7:25)
  2. Terrahawk (5:58)
  3. 3389 (6:59)
  4. East Is East (6:55)
Review: The resurgence of Derek Carr, a producer whose obscure early 2000s deep techno releases have long been held in high regard by collectors, has been heartening to see. His ongoing artistic rebirth continues here, as the Irishman pitches up on FireScope with four more immaculate compositions. He begins by joining the dots between classic intelligent techno and bustling electro on attractive opener "Artifice 2", before necking a boot load of anti-depressants and laying down a sparkling chunk of melodious, outer-space warmth ("Terrahawk"). Over on the flipside, Carr wraps gentle acid lines and high register electronics around a hybrid analogue deep house/Motor City techno groove ("3 3 8 9"), before imaging a utopian world fuelled by classic Japanese techno and Larry Heard style beauty ("East is East"). In other words, it's another superb EP of superior melodious techno.

  1. Cortex Shedding (5:46)
  2. Wave Impartial (4:54)
  3. Cyclic Shadows (5:16)
  4. Pineal Discord (6:07)
Review: The Berlin based, Australian producer Patrick Carrera is up next on Los Angeles based Modularz. The Paranoid Dancer and MUUI boss follows up some great releases on Mark Broom's Beardy Man on the Unscripted EP. He begins with a brazen tribute to the raw minimalism of early Regis (circa Gymnastics) on "Cortex Shedding" while the remainder of the EP conforms to label boss Developer's modus operandi. From the tunnelling warehouse energy of "Cyclic Shadows" or the classic dystopian futurism of "Pineal Discord" which nails that classic Jeff Mills style of old - complete with hypnotic chime melodies and intricate rhythmic arrangements.

  1. Leon Carson - "China Trax" (8:32)
  2. Theo Parrish - "Insane Asylum" (9:57)
Review: Oh yes, we love it when Theo represses some of his most sought after tracks and this one is particularly well-timed. Leron Carson is still an unknown figure, a kid who used to make viciously raw and futuristic techno tracks in the late 1980's! "China Trax", alongside the rest of his tracks on a different Sound Signature double 12", is totally ahead of its time and if it was truly made in 1987 then it is nothing short of amazing. Of course, it's not just the year it was made in that's interesting but also the fact that it's music without an age, able to be appreciated by any generation of techno freaks. Theo's own "Insane Asylum" on the flipside is also pretty monumental; rigged beats, off-kilter grooves and that familiar spontaneity so heavily associated to the label. RECOMMENDED.

Tempo Reale EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: GTE 002. Rel: 26 Sep 16
  1. Tempo Reale
  2. Tempo Reale (Verrina & Ventura remix)
  3. Tempo Reale (Petar Dundov dirty remix)
  4. Tempo Reale (Eduardo De La Calle Tempo Intrusion Reale remix)
Review: Italian label Greentech was inaugurated by Minimono last year with a great remix by Windy City legend Paul Johnson. The second edition features Gaetano Caruana aka Caruan making his debut in production after many years of DJing. "Tempo Reale" is an inventive and off kilter groove generated by clearly analogue means that pounds and grinds away out of sync at first, until it gradually begins to lock and it sounds great. There's some killer remixes by a real who's who of the scene and we can't help but mention all of them! First up fellow Italians Verrina & Ventura deliver a typically stripped and rolling minimal house rendition. Croatian hypnotic techno don Petar Dundov then delivers something more pounding and aggressive than we're used to, but we loved it all the same. Finally the "Eduardo De La Calle Tempo Intrusion Reale remix" sees the Spanish master of trance induction deliver one of his best remixes in a while, complete with spooky sci-fi atmosphere, Millsian bleeps and sonar blips.

  1. Cassegrain - "Departure Seven"
  2. Ersatz Olfolks - "Straight Road"
  3. Hector Oaks - "Move In Circles, Walk On Lines"
  4. Thomas Hessler - "Memories"
Review: The Bassiani label is the platform for the infamous Georgian club to present its sound to the wider world, and it does so in fantastic fashion with this run of various artist releases. This fourth release kicks off with the dark, textured and brilliantly rendered techno immersion of Cassegrain's "Departure Seven", while Ersatz Olfolks gets a little more heated with the strafing synth work that courses out of "Straight Road". Hector Oaks is also in a rowdy frame of mind with the peak time belter "Move In Circles, Walk On Lines", and it's down to Thomas Hessler to cool things off with the heart-rending electro of "Memories".

Review: Aussie beat bruiser Cassius Select strikes on Accidental Jnr once again. Taking off where "90 / Herd" left us it's another full-strength stew of club fusions. "Essence" boils us right down to a bouncy UK funky-style bashmenty beat as we're bombarded with rubber ball bass licks, "Hype Hour" twists in vocal in the most demonic ways over a set of vibrant chimes and bubbling beats while "Shaolin Soccer" closes the show with skipped-out two-step and iced out atmospheres that wouldn't go amiss on a label like Samurai. Selector!

Review: Known for his role in The Pain Machinery and Severe Illusion, Stockholm native Anders Karlsson has more recently begun to explore similar strands of industrial and EBM in a solo capacity as Celldod, issuing several limited cassettes over the course of 2014. Those without the facilities to consume cassettes will be happy to see some of this Celldod material now issued on vinyl thanks to the efforts of Canadian label Suction Records. Some six tracks deep, Pulsdisco features material from the two cassettes of the same name Karlsson released last year and those that like their EBM minimalist and without vocals will find plenty to enjoy here.

  2. Music Is My Life (feat Tominori Hosoya - Hiroshi Watanabe aka Kaito remix) (8:22)
  3. Autumn (6:16)
  4. Autumn (Kiki remix) (7:37)
Review: Tominori Hosoya is a producer from Tokyo. His trademark sound makes use of intricate melodies and quality production techniques. Through his experience as a DJ, he became influenced by progressive sounds that led him to try his hand at producing. In 2008, he debuted on Dublin's Nice & Nasty records and has kept on going since, with tracks on Suspected, Medium and his own TC White. Now he appears for Offenbach am Main based Gabcat for their ninth edition on wax. On the A side of the brilliant Music Is My Life EP, we have the dark yet slinky tech house of the title track. With its reverb drenched elements facing off with tribal drums and tunnelling melodies, it's impressive. Up next is the rather evocative remix by Kaito: progressive house at its absolute finest! On the flip, there's the rather sublime "Autumn" in its original form, but it's all about Berlin's Kiki giving it the dark journey treatment: optimised for proper dancefloor drama. Life & Death eat your heart out!

Review: The recent news that the Jealous God label is planning to wind down was slightly softened by the impressive selection of releases that will appear before it does. Chief amongst those was this EP from Champagne Mirrors, an alias of Blackest Ever Black contributor Alex Barnett. Extended Communication Techniques is as dark, unsettling and creepy as you'd expect, with occasional shards of light - a headline melody here and there, with similarly rare slivers of woozy electronic positivity - helping to balance out Barnett's dystopian tendencies. It's one of those sets that benefits from repeated listens, with each successive play revealing additional layers of moody detail.

  3. Lack - "Track 3" (8:21)
  4. Haddon - "Anabiosis" (3:00)
Review: Cong Burn continues to exercise one of the most promising instincts for future-minded music on this, their third release. It's surprising they haven't done more previously, considering the maturity of their curation, but either way the quality remains at an all time high here, leading in with some light and liquefied 4/4 sonics from Chekov before pirouetting into one of Duckett's illustrious abstractions around the techno blueprint. Label regular Lack is back on side B with the stern and punchy "Track 3," and then Haddon finishes the record off with "Anabiosis," a densely textured, slow creeping trip of a track.

  3. Roche - "One For Cherushii" (8:01)
  4. David Last - "All That's Left" (feat Lavender - dance mix) (5:51)
Review: Besides its inimitable name, Hobo Camp has had a pretty unbeatable first few years in the game, switching up the electro sound with shades of loopy house and techno. These guys have released over two dozen EPs since 2016, and are showing no signs of stopping if this new collaborative release is anything to by! Pumping the vibes through with utter ease, Run The Length Of Your Wilderness is a daring, rip-roaring amalgamation of tech-driven sounds that span just about every quality corner of the game. "The Industrial City", from Cherushii, moans and weeps with a fragile acid bassline over broken percussion beats, while Nackt's "Next" floats at a house tempo, driven forwards by a winding bass from the darkest corners of the 4/4 game. On the flip, Roche's "One For Cherushii" bigs up his counterpart with a deep, aqueous house chugger, and David Last's "All That's Left" drops a clean, sparkly prog house groover for the lovers.

Cat: TCST 03. Rel: 26 Feb 18
  1. Pulsar
  2. Moebius
  3. Anomaly
Review: After bringing Kangaroo Skull and Cale Sexton to light on previous releases, Temporal Cast once again provides a platform for lesser known talent with this, their third release. Born in Italy and based in Australia, Chiara Kickdrum has only had one digi-only EP out in her name previously, so this release marks a big milestone for her. "Pulsar" is a subtle and refined opening gambit, using a reduced set of cyclical rhythms and draping distant pad notes over the top of it for a perfect exercise in techno elegance. "Moebius" is at the other end of the spectrum, all bloated drums and cavernous reverb decays creating a monolithic atmosphere. "Anomaly" meanwhile maximises on negative space, using a dry drum palette and keeping things firmly submerged - the whole EP is a masterclass of restraint and control.

  3. First Day Without Her (6:54)
Review: When we saw that Toto Chiavetta was stepping up to present the new Mule Musiq release, we were not at all surprised! The Sicilian producer's brand of precisely engineered hi-tech soul is a perfect match. With brilliant releases on top labels such as Innervisions and Osunlade's Yoruba - he's more than capable of delivering the standard of quality that the Japanese label is known for. Indeed the Magnus EP does not at all disappoint: from the melodic, futurist euphoria of A side cut "Higher Than A Bird", to B side offering "First Day Without Her" which is an epic serving of dancefloor drama that sees Chiavetta execute more of the same kind of tension and suspense - it's geared for yet more dive moments of truth under the strobe light.
