  1. Music Is My Life (feat Tominori Hosoya) (6:49)
  2. Music Is My Life (feat Tominori Hosoya - Hiroshi Watanabe aka Kaito remix) (8:22)
  3. Autumn (6:16)
  4. Autumn (Kiki remix) (7:37)
Review: Tominori Hosoya is a producer from Tokyo. His trademark sound makes use of intricate melodies and quality production techniques. Through his experience as a DJ, he became influenced by progressive sounds that led him to try his hand at producing. In 2008, he debuted on Dublin's Nice & Nasty records and has kept on going since, with tracks on Suspected, Medium and his own TC White. Now he appears for Offenbach am Main based Gabcat for their ninth edition on wax. On the A side of the brilliant Music Is My Life EP, we have the dark yet slinky tech house of the title track. With its reverb drenched elements facing off with tribal drums and tunnelling melodies, it's impressive. Up next is the rather evocative remix by Kaito: progressive house at its absolute finest! On the flip, there's the rather sublime "Autumn" in its original form, but it's all about Berlin's Kiki giving it the dark journey treatment: optimised for proper dancefloor drama. Life & Death eat your heart out!

Review: The recent news that the Jealous God label is planning to wind down was slightly softened by the impressive selection of releases that will appear before it does. Chief amongst those was this EP from Champagne Mirrors, an alias of Blackest Ever Black contributor Alex Barnett. Extended Communication Techniques is as dark, unsettling and creepy as you'd expect, with occasional shards of light - a headline melody here and there, with similarly rare slivers of woozy electronic positivity - helping to balance out Barnett's dystopian tendencies. It's one of those sets that benefits from repeated listens, with each successive play revealing additional layers of moody detail.

Cong Burn 03 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: CB 03. Rel: 16 Jul 18
  1. Chekov - "Spring" (5:34)
  2. Duckett - "Lost In Israel" (5:06)
  3. Lack - "Track 3" (8:21)
  4. Haddon - "Anabiosis" (3:00)
Review: Cong Burn continues to exercise one of the most promising instincts for future-minded music on this, their third release. It's surprising they haven't done more previously, considering the maturity of their curation, but either way the quality remains at an all time high here, leading in with some light and liquefied 4/4 sonics from Chekov before pirouetting into one of Duckett's illustrious abstractions around the techno blueprint. Label regular Lack is back on side B with the stern and punchy "Track 3," and then Haddon finishes the record off with "Anabiosis," a densely textured, slow creeping trip of a track.

  2. Nackt - "Next" (5:47)
  3. Roche - "One For Cherushii" (8:01)
  4. David Last - "All That's Left" (feat Lavender - dance mix) (5:51)
Review: Besides its inimitable name, Hobo Camp has had a pretty unbeatable first few years in the game, switching up the electro sound with shades of loopy house and techno. These guys have released over two dozen EPs since 2016, and are showing no signs of stopping if this new collaborative release is anything to by! Pumping the vibes through with utter ease, Run The Length Of Your Wilderness is a daring, rip-roaring amalgamation of tech-driven sounds that span just about every quality corner of the game. "The Industrial City", from Cherushii, moans and weeps with a fragile acid bassline over broken percussion beats, while Nackt's "Next" floats at a house tempo, driven forwards by a winding bass from the darkest corners of the 4/4 game. On the flip, Roche's "One For Cherushii" bigs up his counterpart with a deep, aqueous house chugger, and David Last's "All That's Left" drops a clean, sparkly prog house groover for the lovers.

S/T (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: TCST 03. Rel: 26 Feb 18
  1. Pulsar
  2. Moebius
  3. Anomaly
Review: After bringing Kangaroo Skull and Cale Sexton to light on previous releases, Temporal Cast once again provides a platform for lesser known talent with this, their third release. Born in Italy and based in Australia, Chiara Kickdrum has only had one digi-only EP out in her name previously, so this release marks a big milestone for her. "Pulsar" is a subtle and refined opening gambit, using a reduced set of cyclical rhythms and draping distant pad notes over the top of it for a perfect exercise in techno elegance. "Moebius" is at the other end of the spectrum, all bloated drums and cavernous reverb decays creating a monolithic atmosphere. "Anomaly" meanwhile maximises on negative space, using a dry drum palette and keeping things firmly submerged - the whole EP is a masterclass of restraint and control.

  1. Higher Than A Bird (6:29)
  2. Magnus (6:36)
  3. First Day Without Her (6:54)
Review: When we saw that Toto Chiavetta was stepping up to present the new Mule Musiq release, we were not at all surprised! The Sicilian producer's brand of precisely engineered hi-tech soul is a perfect match. With brilliant releases on top labels such as Innervisions and Osunlade's Yoruba - he's more than capable of delivering the standard of quality that the Japanese label is known for. Indeed the Magnus EP does not at all disappoint: from the melodic, futurist euphoria of A side cut "Higher Than A Bird", to B side offering "First Day Without Her" which is an epic serving of dancefloor drama that sees Chiavetta execute more of the same kind of tension and suspense - it's geared for yet more dive moments of truth under the strobe light.

Dark Spring (hand-stamped 12" in hand-stamped sleeve)
Cat: SCS 06. Rel: 18 Jan 17
  1. Dark Spring (7:13)
  2. Goblin Cleaver (6:58)
  3. When Titans Fall (5:40)
Review: Secret Studio Records sixth offering (SCS06) features the Circling Vultures, a hardware driven project fronted by Chicago natives Justin Long (Hugo Ball) and Ken Zawacki (Dar Embarks). On Dark Spring EP, the title track sounds like an early Regis track on Downwards that's being played on the wrong speed, while "Goblin Cleaver" goes for the same kind of rusty acid jack that homeboy Hieroglyphic Being does. B side cut "When Titans Fall" is a dirty, slow grinding thriller full of clattering vintage drum machine rhythms and and the raw pulsating energy of pawn shop synths. Secret Studio Records, is a blue collar DIY label and production team based out of California's Bay Area with deep roots to Chicago. They've established a strong acidic catalog centered around hard-hitting jack tracks and lo-fi techno with raw aesthetics. The label features co-productions with D'Marc Cantu, D-Wynn and Jason Kendig (Honey Soundsystem), while also releasing EPs by fringe/upcoming artists. Secret Studio Records is a vinyl only label at heart, focused on short runs of 200-400 copies, hand-stamped and numbered with limited distribution.

  3. Black Hole (6:56)
Review: The Swedish techno hero Eric Prydz is back under the Cirez D alias, which has kicked into action full throttle recently - alongside music under the Pryda and ToNjA Holma monikers. His new main room thumper "Dare You" comes courtesy of his own esteemed imprint. From the title track and its tunnelling adventure down into the vortex, to the strobe-lit adrenaline of "The Glitch" or "Black Hole" with its druggy mid-noughties style of minimal shuffle: there's something to rock the dancefloor at any time of the morning by this A.M. expert - on Mouseville's 24th vinyl edition.

Cat: MOUSE 023. Rel: 20 Sep 17
  1. The Accuser (7:28)
  2. On Off (Pryda remix) (9:05)
Review: Cirez D is the alias for techno production that Swedish superstar DJ Eric Prydz uses on his dedicated imprint for such style: Mouseville. On the A side we have the slow burning and tunnelling hypnotism of "The Accuser" with its layers of grinding and adrenalised arpeggio, backed by rattlesnake rhythms plus generous servings of white noise build-ups and laser zaps: all you need right here, seriously! On the flip is "On Off" (Pryda remix) where Prydz dons his other infamous alias for an evocative and life affirming progressive house epic. It's featuring yet more elevating arpeggiations, hands in the air melodies and bumpy bass all geared for stadium sized euphoria.

Review: Taken from his singular and soul arresting second album A Thousand Skies come three on-point floor-fired remixes. Each keeping the original polyrhythmic foundation, Medlar adds a chug and hypnotic percussion roll to "Ar Raqis" while "Hope" enjoys two reversions: Paleman's stark voodoo workout and a lolloping loose-legged steel drum slapping future Afrofunk mix from Japanese scientist Jun Kamoda.

  2. Ness - "Vardar" (5:53)
  3. Reggy Van Oers - "Frenetic" (6:37)
  4. Deepbass - "The Light That Never Was" (6:08)
Review: Joachim Spieth's Affin imprint starts a new series titled Affinity and this inaugurates the new project in spectacular fashion. This new venture will likely delve into hypnotic techno territory and we like where it's leading! It's Sardinia's Claudio PRC up first who gives us "Limnic", a slow burning and sinister epic with some seriously evil sound design and droning bass drawing you into the void. Fellow Sardinian and Prologue label mate Ness is up next with "Vardar" a stomping and tunnelling techno affair with layer upon layer of immersive pads and paranoid atmospherics. On the flip is Dutchman Reggy Van Oers, with the rather Dettmann sounding "Frenetic" and finally sometime Ness collaborator, Glasgow's Deepbass gets onboard with the hypnotic and futuristic stomper "The Light That Never Was".

  1. Claudio Prc - "Atik"
  2. Woo York - "Farewell Old Friend"
  3. Christian Wunsch - "Beta V 0 5"
  4. Tripeo - "Zebog"
Review: To complement the release of the second edition of Unknown Landscapes, Polegroup once again compile four of the previously unreleased contributions for a must have 12" sampler. With Christian Wunsch at the controls, the mix itself is of course a must have for anyone who classes themselves a fan of modern techno. Equally any techno selectors out there that prefer the vinyl format will want to indulge in the four productions here from Woo York, Tripeo, Claudio PRC and Wunsch himself. Claudio PRC opens proceedings with the stripped back and spacious warehouse boom of "Atik" which contrasts nicely with the brighter tones of "Farewell Old Friend" from Woo York. "Beta 0.5" from Wunsch is scratchy, atmospheric techno at its best and Darko Esser is on fine form with the heavenly acid flutter of Tripeo cut "Zebog".
