Remixes Volume 2 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ERC 046-2/MT 013. Rel: 29 May 18
  1. Red Axes - "Shake The Mind"
  2. Jamie Paton - "Take Me To The Beach"
  3. Prins Thomas - "Sudaniyya"
  4. Khidja - "Simple Helen" (feat Borusiade)
Review: Emotional Rescue and Malka Tuti serve up another round of top shelf remixes and revisions of John Rees Lewis' mid-late 80s project C Cat Trance, following in the wake of the Screaming Ghosts compilation. First up to bat are Red Axes, who bring a seductive line in loose and limber drumming to "Shake The Mind" that should suit the Fourth World dancefloor massive just fine. Jamie Paton brings a tough, clamouring intensity to "Take Me To The Beach," while Prins Thomas takes a truly spiritual approach when weaving the intricate arpeggios and percussion of "Sudaniyya." Khidja and Borusiade team up on "Simple Helen," presenting a dense and hazy trip into exotic territory with sinister undertones.

  1. Confine (11:16)
  2. Expand (11:26)
Review: Iranian label Shahr Farang has been quietly issuing some of the most engrossing minimal, ambient and abstract records in recent memory, keeping the release rate simmering but ensuring every record is worthy of attention. Romanian champ Vlad Caia makes a welcome addition to the label, embracing his experimental side with these engrossing studies of leftfield percussion and sound design. "Confine" is a spacious excursion that rolls out interloping sequences of synthetic chimes that fall with an almost organic patter. "Expand" is similarly delicate, feeling as though it floats midway between the earth and the edge of the atmosphere with passing globules of synthesis dropping through its clouds of cyclical melody.

  4. Godbody (Young Male remix) (5:45)
Review: Alongside his fellow New Yorker P.Leone, Caiazzo launched the E-Missions label in March of this year with the release "1994EVER" - an offering that further propelled their standing in the techno community. Caiazzo is said to have moved to techno capital Berlin first and upon Leone's arrival introduced him to Work Them Records boss Spencer Parker: which soon cemented a pretty sweet deal. The Devotion EP starts off with the snarling industrial strength techno of "917" (Sportmixxx) and the tunnelling hypnotic techno journey "Lifeform". On the flip "Godbody" treads a similar path down into the void, but it's all about fellow New Yorker Young Male's rendition which takes its cues from the trance inducing Sound Of Rome made popular by the likes of Donato Dozzy & Giorgio Gigli. Four secret weapons for any serious DJ's sonic arsenal. Tip!

Review: Best known as Call Super, Berlin-based producer JR Seaton was given the honour of inaugurating Fabric's Houndstooth label back in February with the The Present Tense EP, building on his productions for Five Easy Pieces, Throne Of Blood and Relish with a stunning EP of highly detailed techno whose rich textural approach stood out amongst an increasing ocean of industrial sounds. With Houndstooth now established as one of this year's breakthrough labels, Seaton returns with a second offering in the shape of the Black Octagons EP that further extends his grounding as one of techno's most under rated talents. Three tracks deep, Seaton demonstrates a wonderful capacity to mould eye catching productions from glistening tones and scuffed rhythms in a manner that has echoes of Actress and Terrence Dixon.

Review: Call Super is back on Houndstooth, following up that great Nervous Sex Traffic release on Dekmantel with another killer two tracker entitled New Life Tones. There's some immersive high fidelity deepness to be heard on "Puppet Sense" with its booming baseline, echo laden atmospherics and futuristic sound design taking you somewhere else entirely. On the flip, "New Life Repercussions" gets a four to the floor beat on to power away beneath some tunnelling sonar aesthetics and entrancing pads to marvellous effect. Forward thinking stuff as always from this guy!

  1. Dark Sorcerer (5:02)
  2. Lost Souls (6:19)
  3. Trojan Horse (5:00)
  4. Celsius (5:55)
Review: Lo-fi, old-school style techno bangers in the same ballpark as 2MR or Flexxseal here by debutante Dylan Cameron out of Austin TX. He's found a fitting home here at Texas Recordings Underground - the Dallas based label releasing top jams in recent times by local legends such as Convextion and Bill Converse. The Purgatory EP features four truly hellbound cuts and "Dark Sorcerer" sets the scene in frightful fashion indeed. B side cut "Trojan Horse" is the true winner on this EP: a serious acid flashback full of wobbly Cybersonik styled basslines and reversed 909 bang and clatter. It truly reeks of the Packard Plant circa '94. "Lost Souls" and "Celsius" however are the EP's more functional cuts, providing some groove oriented yet austere 'heads down' perspectives for the dancefloor. Tip!

Cat: LAP 00. Rel: 04 Sep 17
  1. Less Dance
  2. Top Less
  3. Lap Dance (Guy Debord's disco Punish mix)
  4. Dance Less (feat Flores Feias)
Review: Hugo Capablanca may be best known for his more disco-minded output from his time on Gomma Records, but increasingly his scattered output and his label have been reaching towards more abrasive material. Nothing will prepare you for the confrontational nature of this daring, 'no label' transmission. The artwork alone is enough to challenge the senses, while the opening track is a metallic drone that gives way to the distended mutant beats of "Top Less". Guy Debord is no less cut throat in delivering a "Disco Punish" remix of "Lap Dance" on the B-side, all deconstructed groove and guttural noise, and then "Dance Less" rounds the record off with another excursion into unsettling, heavily processed noise.

  1. Lap Dance (Lipelis Paper Sound dub)
  2. Track 2
  3. Dance Less (Alessandro Adriani V1RMX)
  4. Top Less (YPY Exp Ver)
Review: Hugo Capablanca has been measured in his approach to releasing music of his own. While his label continues to grow in stature, fresh Capablanca material doesn't come along every day, and this salvo on Disco Catorce is a welcome fix. Lipeli's "Paper Sound Dub" of "Lap Dance" is a killer restrained roller that leans towards heavily percussive disco and bug-eyed 70s sound FX. "Track 2" finds Capablanca getting heavy with the signal processing, creating a right racket in the process. Alessandro Adriani's remix of "Dance Less" is a lean, menacing workout of wave-laced techno, and then YPY freaks the end of the record out with the "Exp Ver" mix of "Top Less".

  3. Wallshaker (Sven's Garden Of Eden dub) (10:43)
Review: One of our favourite labels Millions Of Moments pays a fitting tribute to a true Detroit great in the dearly departed Aaron Carl. His passing late last year was a truly sad end to a glorious career and one of his finest moments in "Wallshaker" is revisited here. Massively rare upon original release back in 1997, Millions Of Moments have already reissued "Wallshaker" and it's accompanying and quite hypnotic "Midnite Dub" back in 2007 but here they go the extra mile, enlisting Sven Weismann to add his own touch to the track. Spread across the B Side, Weismann delivers a superlative remix which transforms the rattling original into a lavishly deep and dubby excursion filled with delightful orchestral flourishes. Extra special sleeve packaging and all profits going to the Carl family just add reasons to indulge in this special release. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Review: Mostly found mining his archives on For Those That Knoe and dropping a quality album on Subwax, comeback champ Derek Carr makes the logical move over to Russ Gabriel's Ferox label with four trips through sublime machine soul. If you've listened to previous Derek Carr releases then you know what to expect - the beats flutter with thoughtful programming and the synths cartwheel through expressive patterns that speak to the same sci-fi fantasies that made B12 so iconic in the early 90s. There's also space for a little subtle electro, as on the haunting "Time Out," bringing a touch of versatility to the record without breaking that shimmering vintage techno haze.

Review: The Berlin based, Australian producer Patrick Carrera is up next on Los Angeles based Modularz. The Paranoid Dancer and MUUI boss follows up some great releases on Mark Broom's Beardy Man on the Unscripted EP. He begins with a brazen tribute to the raw minimalism of early Regis (circa Gymnastics) on "Cortex Shedding" while the remainder of the EP conforms to label boss Developer's modus operandi. From the tunnelling warehouse energy of "Cyclic Shadows" or the classic dystopian futurism of "Pineal Discord" which nails that classic Jeff Mills style of old - complete with hypnotic chime melodies and intricate rhythmic arrangements.

  1. Leon Carson - "China Trax" (8:32)
  2. Theo Parrish - "Insane Asylum" (9:57)
Review: Oh yes, we love it when Theo represses some of his most sought after tracks and this one is particularly well-timed. Leron Carson is still an unknown figure, a kid who used to make viciously raw and futuristic techno tracks in the late 1980's! "China Trax", alongside the rest of his tracks on a different Sound Signature double 12", is totally ahead of its time and if it was truly made in 1987 then it is nothing short of amazing. Of course, it's not just the year it was made in that's interesting but also the fact that it's music without an age, able to be appreciated by any generation of techno freaks. Theo's own "Insane Asylum" on the flipside is also pretty monumental; rigged beats, off-kilter grooves and that familiar spontaneity so heavily associated to the label. RECOMMENDED.

  2. Tempo Reale (Verrina & Ventura remix)
  3. Tempo Reale (Petar Dundov dirty remix)
  4. Tempo Reale (Eduardo De La Calle Tempo Intrusion Reale remix)
Review: Italian label Greentech was inaugurated by Minimono last year with a great remix by Windy City legend Paul Johnson. The second edition features Gaetano Caruana aka Caruan making his debut in production after many years of DJing. "Tempo Reale" is an inventive and off kilter groove generated by clearly analogue means that pounds and grinds away out of sync at first, until it gradually begins to lock and it sounds great. There's some killer remixes by a real who's who of the scene and we can't help but mention all of them! First up fellow Italians Verrina & Ventura deliver a typically stripped and rolling minimal house rendition. Croatian hypnotic techno don Petar Dundov then delivers something more pounding and aggressive than we're used to, but we loved it all the same. Finally the "Eduardo De La Calle Tempo Intrusion Reale remix" sees the Spanish master of trance induction deliver one of his best remixes in a while, complete with spooky sci-fi atmosphere, Millsian bleeps and sonar blips.

Review: The Bassiani label is the platform for the infamous Georgian club to present its sound to the wider world, and it does so in fantastic fashion with this run of various artist releases. This fourth release kicks off with the dark, textured and brilliantly rendered techno immersion of Cassegrain's "Departure Seven", while Ersatz Olfolks gets a little more heated with the strafing synth work that courses out of "Straight Road". Hector Oaks is also in a rowdy frame of mind with the peak time belter "Move In Circles, Walk On Lines", and it's down to Thomas Hessler to cool things off with the heart-rending electro of "Memories".

Review: Aussie beat bruiser Cassius Select strikes on Accidental Jnr once again. Taking off where "90 / Herd" left us it's another full-strength stew of club fusions. "Essence" boils us right down to a bouncy UK funky-style bashmenty beat as we're bombarded with rubber ball bass licks, "Hype Hour" twists in vocal in the most demonic ways over a set of vibrant chimes and bubbling beats while "Shaolin Soccer" closes the show with skipped-out two-step and iced out atmospheres that wouldn't go amiss on a label like Samurai.
