  2. Doubt - "Just Pain" (6:32)
  3. Maan - "Vert" (4:55)
  4. Oscar Mulero - "Drops" (5:51)
Review: DVS1's Mistress imprint acts as a side label to his main label Hush and is focused just as much on house as it is techno and everything in between. Upon first glance, it's pretty evident that these are some fairly austere techno tools for the second edition in his Mistress Special Release - why else rein in Madrid's master mentalist Oscar Mulero for the bleak, tunnel vision of "Drops". Border One (Form & Function/Invites Choice) appears with the chime-driven hypnotism of "Curve" which just so happened to appear on the label head honcho's recent Fabric mix, and Spaniard Maan (more commonly known as Psyk) serves up some rather Robert Hood sounding bleep minimalism on "Doubt".

  2. Check Up From The Neck Up (5:29)
  3. But We Need This Bench (5:24)
Review: Blawan's new side project Bored Young Adults is up next on Will Bankhead's label The Trilogy Tapes. The Shy Dancers On Bungalowdorf Beach features some restrained and slow burning techno experiments that differ from Jamie Robert's more usual hard-hitting sounds. The seething title track treads the same path as Kassem Mosse or Vactrol Park. The Fentanyl techno of "But We Need This Bench" sounds like an old Regis record played on -8, while devoted fans of the young UK producer's sound will get something a bit more familiar on the menacing hypnotic techno grinder "Check Up From The Neck Up".

  2. Borusiade - "Confutation" (6:19)
  3. The Sixteen Steps - "Signals From The South" (6:28)
  4. The Sixteen Steps - "Promises On The Run" (7:17)
Review: Rampant and 'up for it' as usual, the Cititrax label is back with a new set of wayward technoid experiments for the more trained ears on the dancefloors. This time it's Romania's Borusiade and newcomer The Sixteen Steps who share two sides of a wax plate and, of course, proceed to annihilate any idea of a quiet night in. The former sets off with the mechanical acid bumps of "Infatuation", guided by an eerie set of vocal blurs, and that's followed by the comparatively more beat-centric techno of the apocalyptic "Confutation". On the flip, The Sixteen Steps first lands on "Signals From The South", a house banger with noxious levels of mutant bass at its core, followed by the single-minded industrialism and sheer techno brutality of "Promises On The Run". WOWZAH!

V O L A T/Hydroplane (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: O\O 004. Rel: 19 Jun 17
  1. V.O.L.A.T. (9:56)
  2. Hydroplane (7:16)
Review: Braiden's material has been slow to come out since he first landed with a bang on Doldrums back in 2010. A turn on Rush Hour confirmed his status as a producer in command of the chops necessary to get a dancefloor shaking, but this year's X Years In London OST cassette was a chance for him to expand into more experimental pastures. Not so on this new 12" for his Off Out label, which finds Braiden turning up the heat with some fiercely modern tech house workouts. "V.O.L.A.T" has the same kind of dangerous earworm armour that made Paul Woolford's "Erotic Discourse" so potent all those years ago. "Hydroplane" meanwhile takes some of the crisp but playful tropes of Pearson Sound et al and straps them to a thrumming motorik beat.

  3. Traces (Harmonious Thelonious remix)
  4. Eclipse Predictions (Ronny & Renzo remix)
Review: Brain Machine's Peaks LP was a highlight of the Emotional Response catalogue last year, and it's only right that the album gets a high-class set of remixes to accompany it. The label have pulled out the stops here with an all-star cast, leading in with Salon Des Amateurs dreamweaver Toulouse Low Trax who drops a pinging, plucking version of "Light Space". Then Gigi Masin steps up with an illustrious revision of "Crystal Clouds", while Harmonious Thelonious brings a heavy yet measured, techno-minded presence to "Traces". Ronny & Renzo round the package out with playful synth splashes on their version of "Eclipse Predictions".

Peaks Remixes Two (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ERS 030/2. Rel: 02 Oct 17
  1. To The Stars (Rollmottle remix)
  2. Mercury Ripples (Die Wilde Jagd remix)
  3. Alpha Moon (Merrick Adams remix)
  4. Nexus Vox (Cass version part I & II)
Review: Emotional Response reach out to another fine selection of sonic voyagers to take Brain Machine's excellent Peaks LP to task, leading in with the warm discoid undulations of Rollmottle who refigures "To The Stars" as a gentle, groovy warm-up joint. Die Wilde Jagd takes on "Mercury Ripples" and fashion a bombastic breaks jam out of it, and Merrick Adams pushes "Alpha Moon" into a curious but ultimately cosmic space somewhere beyond the titular lunar body. Cass takes the prize with the bittersweet synth tones that course through the two-part remix of "Nexus Vox".

  5. Treacle (5:33)
Review: Apron alumni Brassfoot, aka Tinto Brassalini, has been making all the right moves since his first appearance on Funkineven's label back in 2014 alongside Lord Tusk; along with a fine debut on UTTU he's committed two further 12"s to the Apron cause and slipped out some low-key cassettes with the unheralded J M S Khosah. Given his penchant for vintage electro motifs underpinning distorted percussion and wild electronics, it's no surprise to see Brassfoot has caught the cultured ear of Paul Du Lac who has duly invited the Londoner to contribute to his excellent Bio Rhythm label. At five tracks long, the Dreamstate Intercal 12" is quite the statement and the general corrosive feel of the music feels tight at home on a label that's championed the likes of Jamal Moss and Borft boss Jan Svensson.

  2. Space Boogie (4:47)
  3. No Mad Ronins Death (5:31)
  4. Estate (5:08)
Review: Berlin label Zaijenroots now present Bratha: the studio project of Matt Nowak aka No Mad Ronin with Marieu and Lucretio of The Analogue Cops/Restoration Records who present here the Topless Dancers EP. Starting off with the absolutely thumping title track which truly defines raw jacking techno in its finest form, there's also the brooding and mysterious "Space Boogie" up next; just wait for that massive kick to drop in! On the flip, "No Mad Ronin's Death" is a deep and stripped back affair for the first couple of minutes until they drop the power once again. This one features some epic strings, hypnotic house pianos and some sweet percussion to boot. Finally "Estate" hammers the message home gloriously on this dirty and dusted down retro treat for freaks.

  3. Leaves - "Third Floor" (Pablo Mateo remix) (6:31)
  4. Glyn - "Kevin Lomax" (Orson Wells remix) (5:39)
Review: Ron Wilson's 777 serves up more raw and rusty house jams on a new various artists sampler entitled Internal Affairs: this is serious! On the A side is newcomer Brighton with "Tesla" (Leaves Remix), while Frankfurt's Orson Wells gives us "Ratio" where Saarbruckens finest: Roger 23 gets on the remix and delivers a lush deep acid rendition this side of Tin Man. On the flip, Leaves returns with the impressive "Third Floor" getting an awesome remix by Pablo Mateo; working those drum computers to impressive effect as always. Finally, Orson Wells stays on too; working the nightshift on his remix for Glyn's "Kevin Lomax" and giving it a lo-fi, neon lit makeover that will appeal to retroverts dancing well into the morning at Robert Johnson next Sunday morning.

Catch It (feat Last Exit mixes) (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: FGHB 005. Rel: 03 Apr 18
  1. Catch It (Calm Manoeuvre)
  2. Catch It (Jam)
  3. Ruhrschnellweg (Last Exit Stahlhausen mix)
Review: Fragrant Harbour once again dig out a cult gem from the seemingly endless vaults of 90s dance music, picking up on a rare and precious gem from a seminal Laurent Garnier mix and giving it the remaster and reissue it deserves. The artists responsible, Broccoli Brothers vs Righteous Men, hailed from Germany and were trying to emulate Mike Dunn. "Catch It (Calm Manoeuvre)" is a spaced out deep house track with all the gritty impact of a classic jam, while "Catch It (Jam)" gets decidedly rowdy with its hefty kick, jacked up swing and wonky bassline. On the B side "Ruhrschnellweg (Last Exit Stahlhausen Mix)" brings a little Detroit flavour into the mix with spectacular, uplifting results.

Edge Of Darkness (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: VIVOD 022. Rel: 11 Jun 18
  1. Female Predator
  2. Fear Eats The Soul
  3. Edge Of Darkness
  4. Basic Structure
Review: Emergent duo Broken Arrows were previously spotted lurking around Giallo Disco back in 2015, so you should have some idea of the kind of lurid late night machine sleaze they like to get their hands dirty with. They've now slid over to the sympathetic but marginally more techno-minded Vivod imprint with a new clutch of deviant heaters for those adventurous dancefloor spaces where B-movie sounds reign supreme. "Female Predator" is a tough EBM-tinted workout with plenty of jack in its stack, while "Fear Eats The Soul" takes a more synth-wave approach with some speech samples thrown in for good measure. "Edge Of Darkness" is a more tense affair that pings arpeggios around a minor key refrain, and then "Basic Structure" whips out the hardest track on the record, a lithe industrial stomper laden with rhythmic noise and a mean synth bassline that will hit your solar plexus like a battering ram.

Cat: CITI 016. Rel: 20 Mar 15
  1. Channel 83 (6:35)
  2. Local Violence (7:59)
  3. Ritual Killing (7:43)
  4. Drycutting (5:55)
Review: Having made his name during the late '90s and early 2000s as a maker of particularly forthright techno, Oliver Ho has broadened his horizons in recent years. Nowhere is that more obvious on his Broken English Club project, which debuted last year with a pair of industrial and EBM minded releases for Jealous God and Minimal Wave offshoot Cititrax. Here he returns to the latter, laying down more fuzzy, straight-to-tape journeys into analogue, mid '80s dancefloor experimentalism. There's naturally much to enjoy, from the peak Cabaret Voltaire grittiness of "Drycutting", and the bleak EBM throb of "Ritual Killing", to the ghostly synthesizers, Jaydee bass and droning textures of "Channel 83".

Review: Oliver Ho inaugurates his new imprint under the Broken English Club alias "where absurdist melodrama meets vile electronics." This new 7" inch features two raw and confronting tracks: on Side A we have the title track with its pounding and trance inducing tribal drums backing an onslaught of alien vocals, swimming in layers of noise and distortion; riveting stuff! On the flip "Our History In Bones" harks back to the chilling drone rock experiments as heard on his tremendous Suburban Hunting LP last year with his trademark nonchalant vocals in yet another brilliant display of modern post-punk interpretation.

Review: After a quiet 2016 thus far Och's Autoreply label is finally back in action with a frankly fantastic selection of workouts from Mark Broom. In keeping with the style Broom has been exercising in new Perbec jams with Baby Ford, this is more restrained than the muscular techno Broom can also be known for. Instead, you get expressive, satisfying house tracks such as "18.2" and the neatly pumping "10" with its killer array of synths to satisfy the dancefloor and the mind in equal measure. Avoiding unnecessary fireworks in favour of perfectly chosen and shaped elements, this is a glittering demonstration of Broom's cool-headed approach in the studio.
