Physical modelling synthesis Eurorack synth module - 14HP wide
Notes: Rings brings physical modelling synthesis to your Eurorack system, from a more modular angle than Braids' models or Elements. Instead of trying to be a complete instrument, Rings focuses on the key ingredient, the resonator, ready to be excited by envelope clicks, trigger pulses, granular noise or any other audio source produced by the rest of your system.

Three families of vibrating structures are simulated by the module, with CV control over their parameters:

- Strings, membranes and tubes as modelled by Elements' resonator section (modal synthesis).
- Strings coupled together and vibrating in sympathy, with controllable intervals between them.
- Strings with a variable amount of inharmonicity.

Rings can be configured so that each new note is played on its own virtual string, while the previously played note(s) still decay(s). This unique take on polyphony allows the module to play strummed chords.

Mixer, offset, attenuverter synth module with 3 channels of audio/CV processing, 6HP size
Notes: Shades provides 3 channels of audio/CV processing which can be configured either as active attenuators or as attenuverters.

A bicolor LED monitors the polarity and intensity of the audio or CV signal on each output.

Unconnected inputs are normalized to an internal precision voltage reference, which can produce either a +5V or +10V constant voltage.

Normalization on the outputs allows the module to be used as a mixer or offset generator: when no jack is inserted in an output, the signal from this output is summed into the next output. Combined with the internal voltage reference, this allows the module to be used as a CV offset control.

Patch examples:

When output 1 is left unconnected, the signal on output 2 is the sum of channels 1 and 2. Channel 3 can be used for another purpose (attenuation, attenuversion, or constant CV generation).

When output 1 and 2 are left unconnected, the signal on output 3 is the sum of channels 1, 2 and 3.

Offset generation:
Leave channel 1's input and output unconnected, and connect a CV source to channel 2's input. Channel 2's output will contain a scaled and offset copy of the input CV. Channel 1's level knob will control the offset and channel 2's level knob will control the signal scale and polarity.

Universal, patch-programmable modulation source - 14HP
Notes: ASR envelope, complex 6-stage envelope, LFO, 4-step sequence or switched LFO: Stages can be any kind of modulation.

Not because all these behaviours have been pre-programmed in the module, but because it allows you to describe your own modulations in terms of basic operations: ramp from one voltage to another, hold a voltage at a set level, wait for a trigger and slew. With or without looping.

Whether you need one complex envelope, or several simpler modulations, Stages reconfigures itself according to which of its gate inputs are patched. There is always a role for it in your patch.

That's it. Really, there isn't more to the story.

Self-generating chiptunes? Very weird LFO shapes? Random gate delay? Stages probably does strange and wonderful things when patched in a certain way.

Flexible input/output layout:

The module detects the presence of jacks on its gate inputs to group its segments: whether it is configured as a complex 6-stage envelope, or 6 individual envelopes, or 3+3, 2+4... depends simply on how you patch it. Dummy patch cables might come handy!

When used as a multi-segment envelope, a segment activation signal is produced on all secondary outputs - for example to trigger an external event when an ADSR envelope enters its decay, sustain or release stages.

In case more than 6 segments are required, up to six modules can be chained together thanks to a connector at the back of the module.

Three segment types:

- Ramp segments go from one voltage to another, in a CV-controlled amount of time, with an adjustable curve (accelerating, uniform, decelerating). They are the building block used for the attack, decay or release segments in envelopes... or for LFOs.
- Hold segments stay at a constant (but CV-controllable) voltage for a programmable amount of time. They serve as the sustain or hold segments in envelopes.
- Step segments glide to a target (CV-controllable) voltage, then stay at this voltage for a certain amount of time until a trigger is received. They are the main ingredient for step sequences, but also for building sequential switches or a sample-and-hold.


A segment, or a group of segments, can loop on itself: if the last segment of the envelope is included in the loop, the loop lasts forever. Otherwise, the loop remains active while the gate is high, then continues past the last segment of the loop. These two behaviours allow the creation of self-looping envelopes (LFOs), or the sustain stage of a good old ADSR envelope!

Single segment processing:

Even when they aren't part of any group and don't receive any gate or trigger signals, individual segments can perform interesting functions: Ramp can loop on itself and turn into an LFO, Hold can delay a CV and Step can slew it.

Now patch a trigger signal: the self-looping Ramp turns into a tempo-synced LFO, the Hold segment becomes a pulse generator, the Step segment a sample-and-hold.

Dual analog VCA and 2-pole VCF, with digital control path - 12HP size
Notes: Streams provides two channels of extremely flexible signal dynamics manipulation.

Each channel consists of an analog voltage-controlled filter and amplifier (VCFA). The response curve of the amplifier section is continuously variable from exponential to linear. The amplifier gain is directly controllable from a CV input, through an attenuator. But what makes Streams truly unique is the multi-purpose EXCITE input. The signal routed to this input is analyzed by a micro-controller and translated into internal control voltages for the VCFA, turning Streams into a very versatile signal contouring tool:

Envelope generator
The EXCITE input can work as a trigger input, triggering an internal AD or AR envelope routed to the gain and the filter cutoff (in variable amount). With only 6-HP of space, you can shape an oscillator or noise source into a full-bodied sound.

Vactrol curve generator
The EXCITE input is processed by a digital model of a resistive opto-isolator (Vactrol), controlling the gain and the filter cutoff (in variable amount). The digital emulation allows the modification of properties of opto-isolators - such as response time - which are otherwise difficult to control. The virtual vactrol response can be either optimized for processing CVs, or triggers (for "plucked" sounds).

Amplitude and frequency content follower
The envelope and cutoff of the EXCITE signal is measured, and applied to the signal on the VCFA input.

Streams' VCF is disabled, and the VCA is used to control the dynamics of the input signal. An intuitive control scheme allows the compressor to be used either for peak reduction/limiting operation; or for boosting signal levels with soft-limiting. The EXCITE input can be used as a sidechain.

Notes: Evolved from the oscillator mixing section of Mutable Instruments' desktop hybrid synths, Warps is designed to blend and combine two audio signals. A variety of wave-shaping and cross-modulation methods - some of them emulating classic analog circuits, some of them purely digital - are provided by the module.

With Warps, the cross-modulated sound can be sculpted with control voltages along 4 dimensions: by controlling the amplitude and distorting the input signals, by smoothly scanning through the collection of modulation algorithms, and by adjusting a timbre parameter controlling the brightness/harshness of the modulated signal.

Since many classic cross-modulation effects work best when the carrier is a simple waveform - for example, a sine wave for ring-modulation or a buzzing waveform for vocoding - Warps includes a digital oscillator offering a handful of classic waveforms. Notes: Yarns is a MIDI interface providing up to 4 channels of CV/Gate conversion, and providing some of the MIDI message processing features of Mutable Instruments' MIDIpal, including arpeggiator, euclidean sequencer, and a SH-101 inspired step sequencer.

Yarns provides 4 CV outputs and 4 Gate/trigger outputs, which can be assigned to up to 4 voices. In single voice mode, note, velocity, modulation and aftertouch (or other CC) CV are produced, along with a gate, a trigger, and a clock/reset output. In two voices mode, two channel of note, modulation or aftertouch CV are produced, along with two gates, and clock/reset outputs. The 2 and 4-voice modes are available both in a "polyphonic" and "multitimbral" flavour. The former receives chords from one single MIDI channel and dispatches them to the voices; while the later provides independent monophonic parts - which can be addressed to different MIDI channels, keyboard ranges, or even velocity levels. Various note priority modes (low, high, last) and polyphonic allocation schemes (voice-stealing, random, cyclic) allows you to fine-tune the CV/Gate conversion to your playing style. Each voice has a built-in digital LFO to interpret modulation wheel messages as a vibrato; can respond to pitch-bend messages; or can be smoothed with a glide/portamento control - no need for a dedicated module and patches to get the right response from a MIDI keyboard!

Each part can generate sequences either through an arpeggiator/euclidean sequencer combo; or with a SH-101 style sequencer with step-by-step recording, storing up to 64 notes. The module can sync to an external MIDI clock, and generate a clock/reset output at any subdivisions of the MIDI clock.

Other unique features include support for microtunings (either through standard MIDI messages or from a selection of historical tunings or indian ragas), just intonation, and an audio output mode which can transform one, two, or four of the CV outputs into simple digital oscillators.

Notes: Confundo Funkitus crossfades between two sets of four rhythms using probability. Three different probability curves can be selected to control the behaviour of the crossfader. Per-part switch mutes are included with live performance in mind.

Connect up to four rhythm outputs to each of the two sets of inputs. Connect the outputs to modules that take triggers. Drums that take triggers are perhaps the easiest.

Toggle the Curve switch to the top position. If the crossfader is fully left, then only inputs on the left will create gates. If the crossfader is positioned in the middle, the Centre light is illuminated the two rhythms are blended together: gates are generated any time either rhythm is played. If the crossfader is all the way to the right the gates generated come from the second (right-hand) set of inputs.

Between these extremes the produced rhythm is a combination of both sets of input weighted by the position of XFADE and which curve is selected.

Simple attack-release envelope with voltage controlled clamp
Notes: The Sinclastic Empulatrix was inspired by the simple - yet remarkably clever - envelopes used in the cymbals of the TR-808. These envelopes are simple exponential decays that are applied to the signal via clamping rather than the more typical scaling. For binary signals such as a square wave a clamping VCA will sound like a typical VCA. For analog signals it will add a clipping effect that gets stronger as the envelope decays.

The Sinclastic Empulatrix has knobs for control of attack and release.

The envelope is controlled by a gate input that determines the timing of the envelope. The envelope is also scaled by the voltage of the gate so it can be used to control the amplitude of the envelope.

The clamping VCA section of the Sinclastic Empulatrix has a simple input and output. It is DC-coupled so is suitable for control voltages and can be used without the envelope generator by turning the attack and release fully counter-clockwise and driving the gate with an analog CV.

This module can also be used as an asymetric slew: the envelope output will track the gate input but will be slewed by the attack and release times based on relative voltage.

Notes: The Zularic Repetitor is a rhythmic gate generator based off the rhythmic theory of African music. A core pattern forms the basis and variation is achieved by offsetting this pattern in time relative to the base.

This module contains 16 mother rhythms from African, Indian, Latin and Funk roots. Each rhythm outputs four variations of itself simultaneously while allowing the offset of each part in time by CV and Knob. It requires only a master clock to run and also allows the pattern to be reset by an external gate.

Connect a clock to the Beat input and let's go! With the Mother potentiometer or a CV you can select one of 32 rhythmical patterns which have African, Indian, Latin American or Funk roots. With a switch you can select between rhythms from the Old or New World.

Programmable eurorack synth module by Patchblocks - 8HP wide
Notes: Maker.ie are delighted and humbled to have been working with Patchblocks over the last while to develop a Eurorack modular synth version of Patchblocks, the programmable mini synth originally developed by patchblocks.com

Patchblocks allows the user to program and customise how the module behaves, using the Patchblocks super intuitive graphical programming environment.

Some of the functions that the module can currently do;

- The module requires 50mA of +12v, 25mA of -12v and 30mA of +5v to operate, and is normally powered from a Eurorack power supply distribution bus.
- Audio I/O - Left and Right channel analogue audio inputs and outputs, voltage range +/-10v.
- Gate / Trigger Inputs - for the Left and Right switches, voltage range 0v to +5v, overvoltage protected.

Next generation analog delay synth module
Notes: The Analog Replicator was redesigned from scratch to be the finest analog delay available with a sound and feature set focused around the modular synthesizer.

Our original Analog Delay module grew out of the circuitry of a guitar pedal. The new Analog Replicator module does not share the same stompbox lineage. Michael Johnsen, Pittsburgh Modular's analog engineer, created a modern BBD core fed by a unique clock source and proprietary signal processing circuits. The result is a flexible, more musical, eurorack delay module.

How It Works:
At the heart of the Analog Replicator is a pair of 4,096 stage BBD chips. The name BBD stands for [B]ucket [B]rigade [D]evice in reference to a line of people passing buckets of water to quickly extinguish a fire. Each stage of a BBD chip contains a single capacitor. Pairing two chips together creates a chain of 8,192 capacitors. Like the water buckets, an audio signal is passed from capacitor to capacitor within the BBD chips once every clock step. A slower clock produces a longer delay and a faster clock produces a shorter delay.

Multi-Mode Delay:
The controls of the Analog Replicator can be used to produce a wide range of delay effects. The STAGES switch flips between 4,096 and 8,192 BBD stages. 4,096 uses a single BBD chip and 8,192 uses two. Using both BBD chips doubles the available delay time, perfect for echos and longer delays. Using a single BBD is useful for reverb and chorus effects. The SHORT/LONG switch drastically adjusts the delay range. Using a single BBD, the SHORT range varies between 10ms and 175ms and the long range varies between 10ms and 1300ms. The SHORT mode produces bright, clean analog repeats. LONG mode is dark and grimy. Mud and clock noise (whine) begin to leak in and eventually take over as the Analog Replicator reaches the longest available delay time.

Chorus and Reverb:
The design of the Analog Replicator allows it to mimic Chrous and Reverb effects. Setting the switches to 4,096 and SHORT, adjusting the TIME control to create shorter delays, and adding a small to medium amount of FEEDBACK, the Analog Replicator generates an analog reverb effect. Add modulation using the TIME CV IN to take advantage of a range of chrous like effects.

Voltage controlled analog waveform decimator effects module - 8HP wide
Notes: The Crush is an audio destroyer; a voltage controlled, all analog sound decimator. A sonic laser designed to shatter waveforms into a million pieces. The sound of the Crush module is defined by three parameters, Sample Rate, Interpolation, and Mix. Sample Rate assigns the periodic voltage sample timing, breaking down an audio source into ever-larger static chunks. The Interpolate switch tries to rebuild the original waveform from the remaining pieces imprinting another layer of errors and unique artifacts on the output. The results are crushing.

The Crush wrecks audio without ever sounding harsh or thin. Compared to a digital bit crusher, the analog Crush sounds full and warm. Taking advantage of unlimited bit and sample rate resolutions, the Crush avoids lo-fi digital results by smoothly downsampling at infinite resolution.

An integrated voltage controlled mix circuit allows the perfect amount of destruction to be added to the audio. Manually set the mix or use a control voltage to sweep from squeaky clean to completely crushed.

Low noise four channel mixer for both audio & CV signals
Notes: The Lifeforms 2+2 Mixer is a low noise, ambidextrous four channel mixer for both audio and CV signals. The signal path is extremely versatile allowing it to function in five different configurations.

The channel controls utilize a logarithmic volume curve tuned for audio signals but the module will work with CV as well.

Patching the output of channel 1 or 3 will remove it from the mixer circuit. Patching the mix 1+2 output removes channels 1 and 2 from the mix (3+4) output and creates two, two channel mixers. Channel 4 cannot be removed from the mixer circuit, however if channel 1, 2, and 3 are all being used as attenuators, channel 4 is the only input remaining in the mixer allowing it to be used as a buffered attenuator.

Classic multi-mode filter module in 8HP Eurorack format
Notes: A deeper exploration of the Pittsburgh Filter sound, the Binary Filter is a voltage controlled, analog, state variable filter based on the filter of the Lifeforms SV-1. The state variable topology was chosen because it allowed us to produce a very smooth and natural sounding filter, in addition to offering several other modes of operation, each with a unique sound and energy all their own.

There Is No Sweet Spot:
The Filter defines the Jekyll and Hyde sound of Pittsburgh Modular. On the one hand, it offers a warm, organic sweep through the full frequency range. The low-pass filter is gummy and relaxed while the high-pass is clean and defined. On the other hand, switching into unstable mode turns the Binary Filter into a howling beast capable of chunky walls of overdrive and noise. The goal was to produce a filter that does not have a single sweet spot. We worked to make every turn of a knob or flip of a switch offer something new and musically engaging.

Filter Responses:
Multiple filter responses are available simultaneously including low-pass, high-pass, and band-pass.

Switch It Up:
The stability switch selects between Stable and Unstable modes. Set to Stable, the Lifeforms Bipolar Filter will not self-oscillate, and operates as a clean, organic filter. Set to Unstable and without an incoming audio signal, the Bipolar Filter produces a high-quality voltage controlled sine wave. Adjusting the Q while in Unstable mode modifies the shape of the waveform. Add an incoming audio signal to the Unstable mode and the output changes dramatically. At normal settings, the incoming signal modulates the self-oscillating filter to produce complex sounds. At more extreme settings, where the Bipolar Filter starts to struggle with self-oscillation, the Q adds anything from ringing fuzz to heavy distortion to the incoming audio.

Modular waveform generator featuring 2 precision analog oscillators with voltage controlled shape contouring
Notes: Designed to be the nucleus of a synthesizer, the Double Helix Oscillator is a modular waveform generator like no other. A set of beefy, analog oscillators paired with voltage controlled shape contouring, deep modulation, and a performance ready voltage controlled modulation matrix create a dynamic, analog waveform playground.

At the core of the Double Helix are two, wide range, precision oscillators. The primary oscillator includes a full complement of waveforms and multiple modulation options. The Secondary oscillator offers a more focused set of waves and frequency modulation. Both oscillators reach deep into LFO range and can be used as voltage controlled modulation sources.

The contour section of the Double Helix Oscillator features a highly tuned wavefolder paired with our exclusive dynamic impulse low pass gate. The contour signal chain starts with a two-channel mixer. This allows multiple waveforms or multiple oscillators to be combined before passing though the contour section. The first half of the contour section is a voltage controlled, 6 stage wavefolder used to add odd harmonics to the incoming waveform. The timbre and timbre CV controls set the density and amplitude of the folds. When processing a sine wave, the wavefolder creates a spectral change from zero harmonics to square, with an infinite harmonic series.

The second half of the contour section is a dynamic impulse low pass gate. The effect of the low pass gate is similar to pairing a low pass filter and VCA together. As the dynamics control is opened, the filter adds harmonics and the VCA increases the amplitude of the waveform. As the dynamics control is closed, the filter removes harmonics and the VCA decreases the amplitude of the waveform. This pairing mimics how sound behaves in the real world creating a more naturally tonal response. The impulse input adds the ability to strike or ping the low pass gate circuit creating a very organic, percussive sound. The decay time of the impulse input is set by the dynamics response control allowing the strike to be tuned to a specific musical context.

The modulation section includes an LFO offering simultaneous sine, square, and random waveforms. A noise source is also available for audio or modulation use.

A pair of voltage controlled routers manage all the CV inputs creating a dual, voltage controlled modulation matrix perfect for complex signal paths, experimentation, and live performance. The matrix consists of two voltage controlled amplifiers designed to control the modulation amount inputs that can be routed to any of the Double Helix CV inputs. Each of the CV inputs can be switched to channel a, bypass, or channel b and mixed with a dedicated CV input.

Organic and percussive, the Dynamic Impulse Filter utilizes an entirely new, all analog design to replicate the impact transients and vibrancy of a percussion hit. The result is a versatile filter module that sounds natural and energetic. The Dynamic Impulse Filter works in one of three modes: resonant lowpass filter, high quality VCA, and a combined lowpass gate mode that manages both timbre and loudness at the same time. The core of the filter uses a Sallen-Key topology to produce a smooth two pole filter that will self-oscillate at high resonance settings.

We Love Vactrols Too...
The dynamics response control is the key. Historically, lowpass gates have used a light dependent resistor called a vactrol to impart a magical, organic response onto a sound. This unique signature has given the vactrol an almost mythical status in the synth community. However, the venerable vactrol is not without its problems. Vactrol response times can vary wildly, creating sonic differences from module to module that cannot be adjusted without replacing the vactrol. The fruit of over two years of research and development, the Dynamic Impulse Filter evolves the lowpass gate into the present by retaining the sonic characteristics we love about vactrols while solving all the problems that come with it. The unique design of the Dynamic Impulse Filter replaces the vactrol with a modern analog circuit created to replicate and expand on the signature sound of the vactrol. The response time of the Dynamic Impulse Filter is not static like a vactrol; instead it is tuneable allowing the response of the module to adapt to any musical context.

Used as a filter, the Dynamic Impulse Filter offers a wide sonic palate with smooth frequency sweeps and aggressive resonance. The Dynamics Response control is an essential part of the filter's unique ability to create rich, tuneable sounds. The impulse trigger input and the exclusive Dynamics Response control allow the module to add an organic, percussive quality to any sound or become a versatile analog drum generator. The Dynamic Impulse Filter will uniquely emulate everything from snappy deep kicks, woody toms, and expressive hand drums, to open up a new world of electronic percussive sounds.

Shared Response:
The Response output of the Dynamic Impulse Filter can be used to control other modules that utilize vactrols. The Response output superimposes the variable Dynamics Response onto vactrol based modules allowing the response of a static vactrol to become adjustable. This opens a range of new possibilities for other modules that use vactrols.

Anything is a Drum:

The Lifeforms Percussion Sequencer breaks through these barriers by including a percussion tuned analog envelope and VCA on each channel. Patching anything from a basic sine wave to heavily modulated and processed noise sources through the Lifeforms Percussion Sequencer will quickly create a distinctive drum kit that takes full sonic advantage of the unique synthesis options available in any system.

The Mind of a Modern Drum Machine:
At the heart of the module is a 4 channel, 32 step beat sequencer designed for live performance. Seamlessly move around the module tweaking patterns and effects without ever stopping the beat. Create and store up to 32 sequences using live performance or step mode recording with pattern lengths varying from 1 to 32 steps. Patterns can be copy and pasted to easily create multiple versions of a beat. The sequencer is driven by an internal tap tempo or external clock source. A dedicated clock in/out jack syncs the sequencer with other modules.

Four Integrated Analog Envelopes and VCAs:
Instead of limiting the drums to a few onboard voices or lo-fi samples, the Lifeforms Percussion Sequencer uses an analog envelope and VCA built into each channel to shape any audio source into a percussive instrument. The envelopes are designed with a razor sharp attack and variable decay/release allowing for maximum control over the output of each channel. The envelopes can also be used externally. A short envelope creates a trigger while longer envelopes can be used as a modulation source for oscillators, filters, or anything at all.

6 Adjustable Pattern Effects:
The Lifeforms Percussion Sequencer includes 6 unique pattern effects to expand the musical possibilities of traditional grid style beat programming. Effects include everything from swing and beat shifters to glitch and generative algorithms designed to manipulate the sequencer pattern. Each channel can run a unique instance of one pattern effect at a time. A master pattern effect channel is also available that affects all 4 channels of the sequencer. The combination of the channel effect and the master effect allows for up to two effects at a time on each channel. Each effect has one parameter that can be adjusted to dial in the perfect response.

- Shift Effect
Delays the trigger output of a channel by small divisions of the tempo. Use this effect to create half-step or stutter-step drum triggers. Effect knob controls the amount of channel shift. The range of shift is 1/8th to 7/8ths of a beat.

- Glitch Effect
Probability based glitch effect that creates chaotic gates based on a cascading chance algorithm. The resulting patterns are always in sync with some division of the clock, allowing for stuttering but not disjointed patterns. The probability is set using the effect knob. The range of the glitch effect is minimal to absolute chaos.

- Density Effect
Sets the number and timing of triggers created for each active step. The result can be anything from a doubling of the trigger to a rolling effect. The effect knob controls the trigger density.

- Morph Effect
Create evolving patterns. The morph effect is a probability based algorithm that modifies an existing pattern by adding or removing active steps. The effect knob sets the probability that the pattern will morph.

- Swing Effect
A classic drum machine effect meant to mimic the feel of a real drummer by shifting the timing of every other step. The effect knob controls the amount of swing.

- Add/Drop Effect
Temporarily add or drop steps from a pattern. The results are similar to the morph effect but changes to the pattern are not compounded as the pattern plays allowing the resulting pattern to stay anchored to the original sequence. The effect knob sets the probability that a step will be modified.

The Mix Mult is a multifunction utility module. The module combines three important functions into a single module. A high quality three channel mixer and/or attenuator and two sets of passive multiples.

The mixer/attenuator section functions as a flexible, low-noise three channel mixer and/or attenuator for audio and CV that can be used in several ways. Patching into the output of channel 1 or 2 will remove that channel from the mixer circuit and turn the channel into an independent passive signal attenuator.
