2 channel low-pass gate with integrated mixer - 10HP
Notes: DYNAMIX is a fast two-channel Low Pass Gate, dynamics manager and mixer, the core of which is derived from our 0-COAST synthesizer. The LEVEL parameter provides simultaneous voltage control over the Amplitude and Frequency content of audio signals, operating as a VCF/A. The DYNMC parameter accepts audio signals or control voltages and converts them into a signal that may increase or decrease the LEVEL parameter thus allowing for Expansion, Compression and Ducking. The summing section is complete with an AUXiliary INput allowing for the chaining of multiple MIX units (modDemix, Optomix and RxMx modules) to create large, non-centralized mixes.

The DYNAMIX is functionally similar to the Optomix LPG: a fundamental element in the sound of West Coast Synthesis, however, rather than using the Vactrol component that gives the Optomix its characteristic "slow" sound, the DYNAMIX circuit utilizes transistors in a topology that has more in common with East Coast instruments. This combination of West Coast technique and East Coast circuitry is No-Coast synthesis at its best, allowing the Low Pass Gate to be used in tandem with an extremely important East-Coast synthesis circuit: the ADSR, a 4-stage Envelope generator we call CONTOUR.

6 band filter synth module with simultaneous 6db/ octave and 12db/ octave inputs, pairs well with the RxMx module
Notes: 6 Band Fixed Filter bank offering simultaneous 6db/ Octave and 12db/ Octave inputs. The 6 filter bands are spaced at roughly 11 to 13 semitones and cover a range of around 6 octaves. The FXDf is useful for isolating a particular portion of the spectrum for mixing and analog or digital signal processing such as ring modulation, amplitude modulation, pitch-shifting and reverberation. The module has a header behind the faceplate allowing for normalled connection of the 6 filter band outputs to the 6 inputs of RxMx allowing for voltage controlled, percussive spectral animation.

In the past the Serge System Fixed Filter used a 6db/ Octave filters while the Moog Modular used 12db/ Octave filters. We liked the sound of both filter slopes, so we implemented a way to use either or both simultaneously. In this way the FXDf also allows for blending of two audio signals. Traditionally fixed filters are large modules having 8 to 10 bands, each with a manual level control, but rarely having any voltage control. The FXDf is so small we had to abbreviate the words Fixed Filter and by providing individual outputs as well as a header for normalled connection to our RxMx 6 channel macro-lowpass-gate module, voltage control over level of each band is possible through patching. We selected the 6 bands we found to produce the most sonic energy in typical Make Noise system patches. We also took care to spaced them wide enough that each of the bands could be distinct from the others. This makes for quite an impactful sound when modulating the amplitude of the 6 bands using the RxMx or VCAs.

Notes: The Multiple is a simple but important module that allows for sending a signal to multiple destinations. Within the Make Noise system the Multiple may also be used for combining clock, gate and pulse signals together to create interesting timing sources (in other words, it acts as a Gate combiner aka logic OR circuit).

It has 9 inter-connected sockets that may be split into different group combinations depending upon how it is patched. The jacks circled in white will make or break the interconnects between the 3 groups of three, thus allowing for three 3-way, one 5-way/ one 3-way or one 7-way multiple.

The Multiple is passive, because the Make Noise system does not require Buffered Multiples since all critical control signals are already buffered in such a way as to provide a large fan-out capability.

Upgraded memory performance offers an increase from 1.45 minutes to 2.9 minutes of record time.

If you are using Splices that are over 1 minute long the SLIDE parameter will be scanning across a massive amount of material and therefore the longer the Splice the longer it will take to get to where you are Sliding toward. Imagine a tape machine shuttling forward or backward to get to your desired destination. No we cannot change this, the MG is scanning as fast as possible. This new double record time firmware will make this even more of a factor.

Read and Write times will be MUCH longer when you have a Full 2.9 minute reel. So for example, if you decided to erase a 5 second Splice in the middle of a 2.9 minute reel it will take twice as long as before because the MG must re-write the entire 2.9 minute reel. Of course all of this is happening in the background and should not cause too much hassle. Still when that SHIFT button is flashing it is best to not perform more SD Card actions.

For most granular processing Splices of 10 seconds or less are recommended.

So why even bother increasing record time to 2.9 minutes? Well it allows for storing even more Splices on a Reel and it also makes it possible to record long portions of a patch for later arranging within your DAW. You could potentially capture a patch, including modulations of a shorter Splice (say 10 seconds), retrieve the sound from the SD Card and compile into a larger work using your DAW.

Notes: The tELHARMONIC is a Multi-Voice, Multi-Algorithm synthesizer module named for the music hall considered by some to be the location of the first electronic music concerts. It was coded by Tom Erbe with the goal of presenting three historically important pioneering electronic tone generation techniques less often implemented within the modular synthesizer.

The tELHARMONIC's roots go back further than the advent of electronic music, as it also takes a new approach to handling music theory in the modular context. TONIC, INTERVAL, DEGREE and D-GATE, allow for patch-programming of complex chord progressions, scales, melodies and playing styles. This Voltage Controlled Music Theory guides the Algorithms in a unified way, whereas CENTROID, FLUX and H-LOCK sculpt the timbre of each Algorithm uniquely, allowing for complex sounds to be created around a unified melodic structure and pattern.


The Spiratone is a form of Shepard Tone generator. It is a sonic barber pole that creates the auditory illusion of a tone that continually ascends or descends in pitch, yet ultimately seems to get no higher or lower.

It occupies the same space as the tELHARMONIC. To find it, have nothing patched to D-Gate and HOLD H-LOCK for 5 seconds. The sound will dramatically change... you've found the Spiratone inside your tELHARMONIC.

Notes: An LFO, or low frequency oscillator, sends control voltage out in the shape of a waveform. The Quad LFO available shapes include sine, ramp, saw and pulse and moves through these shapes using the SHAPE slider. You can send these 4 distinct LFOs directly out or to other modules for frequency modulation, VCA control, filter control, etc.

What makes this Quad LFO module different is that it also includes a 16 step automation sequencer as well as autosave or expanded preset functions when used in conjunction with Varigate 4+ and Varigate 8+.

To create a sequence of automation for an LFO, hold the RECORD button and move the sliders for Frequency, Phase, Shape, Distort and Level and those slider movements will play back automatically as the Quad LFO cycles through the sequence. This sequencing feature allows for a multitude of dynamic possibilities for live performance and recording.

Set each LFO to trigger via one of the 4 individual gate inputs, or set channels 2 through 4 to follow channel 1 for quadrature and phase modulation. Change the direction of each channel of sequenced automation to Forward, Reverse, Pendulum or Random. Switch the playback speed and style between Fast, Slow or Tempo Sync. Multi-function manual vontage processor synth module with attenuverter/offset, mixer & mutliples functions - 16HP wide
Notes: The manual voltage processor (MVP) is a multi-function module with several vital "basic-utility" functions all packed onto one panel. this module is an ideal one-stop solution for manually mixing, scaling, inverting, distributing and offsetting audio and/or control voltage signals.

This module consists of three basic sections: first is the attenuverter/offset section at the top. each of the 3 independent attenuators is bipolar and will output a static +/-5v dc voltage (offset) with nothing plugged into its input jack. the corresponding led will indicate your signal's strength and polarity. (red = positive.)

Second is the mixer section in the middle. it's set up as a basic unipolar 4-input unity-gain mixer. the sum of channels 1 & 2 can be removed from the main output by inserting a cable into the jack labelled "1+2", allowing you to use this section as two independent 2-input mixers. the output jacks are marked with black square surrounds. this mixer is designed to handle primarily audio and uses the same op-amps as the mix. it'll handle CVS quite happily, but the inputs aren't matched and you may not get good results with critical signals such as pitch cv.

Finally there is the multiples section across the bottom. on the left are two 1->2 buffered multiples and on the right are two 1->3 passive multiples. the input jack for each section is marked with a black circular surround. the arrows on the panel indicate internal connections between sections. with only buffered input a in use you can distribute a signal to as many as 10 different destinations.

Like all Manhattan Analog modules, the MVP is entirely hand-built using panel-mounted metal-shaft pots and is fully protected from reverse-power accidents.

Modor Comb Filter Module (synth module)

14HP Eurorack digital filter
Notes: What is a Comb Filter? It is a digital filter where the input signal is mixed with a slightly delayed version of the input signal. You won't hear it as some kind of an echo, as this delay is very short (40ms at max). But the mixing process creates a number of equally spaced peaks and holes in the frequency spectrum, that make it look like the teeth of a comb. That's where the name 'Comb Filter' comes from.

Comb filters are typically used to make chorus and flanger style effects. These effects are created by modulating the delay time. With longer and relatively fast modulated delays you receive a chorus effect. With short to very short slowly modulated delays, combined with some feedback you'll get the typical sound of a flanger unit.

So, the most interesting parameter in this is the delay time. That determines the frequency spacing of the comb teeth. So that's why there's a CV control for it. The typical chorus and flanger effects are made by modulating the delay time with a triangle LFO. So there's a triangle LFO onboard the module, with speed control. If you don't enter any CV in the CV1 connector, it is normalled to this internal LFO to make typical effects. CV2 is normalled to the reverse signal of CV1, to make Modor's typical wide stereo effects, just as on the NF-1 synthesizer. But of course, you can enter your own CV signals in there: LFO's, Envelopes or some rhythmically undulating spacy voltage signals...

The centre big DELAY control sets the delay time, the DEPTH control sets the amount of CV modulation of the delay time. DEPTH can go positive and negative.

The MIX control sets the dry/wet mix. The FEEDBACK controls the amount of feedback. It can be set both positive and negative. The SPEED control sets the pace of the internal triangle LFO.

16HP Eurorack incarnation of the filter section from Modor's NF-1 digital polyphonic synthesiser
Notes: Modor's Formant Filter is a special filter that does a kind of 'vowel morphing' between three vowels. The big central FORMANT control is responsible for that, and on the Eurorack module there's of course a CV control (with attenuation) on this parameter.

You can imagine a formant filter as a set of parallel bandpass filters, picking up and amplifying a set of small frequency bands. For example, with these frequency bands around 750Hz, 1200Hz and 2800Hz, you get the sound of an 'A'. So far, nothing special. There are more formant filters around composed of a set of parallel bandpass filters.

It gets more interesting when you're able to 'morph' between different sets of those formant frequencies. Behind the central FORMANT control, there are 3 of those sets of frequencies. One at full left, one in the middle, and one fully right. So you can for example morph between A-E-O. Or U-I-E. Or AO-UI-EU. Or ...

That's what it does: morphing between different sets of formant frequencies, and that's why it sounds a lot more genuine vowel-ish than many other static bandpass combinators.

There are 10 preset vowels, that can be selected with the VOWEL button: A-E-O-I-OE-U-EI-EU-AO-U-UI. The vowels of the Dutch language... :-)

The 1-2-3-4 controls on top give you the possibility of composing your own vowels by manually adjusting the frequency bands.

Passive bus mult distribution system with cables
Notes: Bus Mult allows you to passively distribute signals throughout your system using a two pin jumper cable on the back of each module. Bus Mults can either be daisy chained to one another in an endless cascade or connected directly to the CV or gate bus on your busboard. This distribution method allows you to save a slot on your mult that normally would be reserved for linking two mults together. It is now also possible to have one signal be distributed long distances throughout your system without the need for long cables.

Each module comes in a pack of three, with a one foot two pin Dupont jumper cable. Longer cables can be built or purchased from common electronics suppliers. This module does not need power, so you can grab a bunch and scatter them throughout your case without worrying about current draw.

4HP glitch drum module
Notes: DIAL-UP! The oscillator core has a single knob (lil' computer) which scrambles the glitch algorithm. Bipolar CV control over this parameter can be accessed by the CV input (lil' phone). The oscillator goes into an onboard transistor VCA with built in decay envelope. Decay times can be changed with the "tail" knob as well as the three-position range switch which selects the max decay range from low, medium, to high. Just like Muskrat, the BANG! input does not only accept triggers, it can also be used as an envelope follower input.

It's difficult to say what exactly the knob and CV do, as this parameter is responsible for controlling several different pieces of the code at once. It's a sort of hybrid between the overall pitch and the amount in which the module glitches out.

6 channel trigger sequencer/clock divider with bipolar CV - 18HP
Notes: MITO (derived from "mitosis") is a 6 channel trigger sequencer that specializes in swingin', divide'n, n' polyrhythm'n. With the turn of a knob, the user can select which division of the incoming clock (BANG!) is output from the corresponding jack (all the way left: divide by 16, all the way right: divide by 1). Each channel is equipped with its own mute switch, allowing the user to turn each individual sequence on and off while other channels keep chuggin' and clockin' along. Global swing can be controlled with the amoeba knob in the top right hand corner of the module. Beneath the amoeba, a global pulse width feature allows the user to lengthen and shorten pulse length of all 6 channels at the same time. This feature is particularly useful when paired with the Muskrat & Kriket, or any other module that reacts proportionally to incoming pulse length. Last but not least, the RESET input will set all division counts back to zero to square up your groove. Each channel will be held HIGH, as long as the incoming voltage is HIGH. This RESET capability allows you to get even more odd metered grooves as it is not dependent on the internal clock of MITO.

All features on MITO can be controlled with bipolar CV, allowing for a wide range of modularity and flexibility. When paired with the Deviant, each knob on the module becomes the anchor point of the groove. As the random voltages from Deviant shift around, creating rhythmic variations by adding and subtracting CV, the position of the knob will dictate how busy or relaxed the groove is. For playability sake, this patching approach is what led to the decision to have the pots as offsets rather than attenuators on MITO. Everything from simple poly-rhythmic structures to nonsensical spewing and sputtering are now at your finger tips with this lovely duo.

Something considered when coding the module was avoiding the use of averaging to determine master clock tempo. In a performance setting when averaging is used, it often translates to the module taking a few pulses to calculate the overall clock speed. With MITO, the divisions are calculated in an "analog" fashion, step by step with each individual clock pulse.

MUSKRAT is a flexible, 8-bit wavetable drum synth. There are 23 onboard wavetables to choose from, either manually or via bipolar CV input. Pitch and phase distortion also include bipolar CV inputs and accept -5v to +5v. The 'Trigger' input is designed without input conditioning and picks up signals of all varieties. In other words, it's an envelope follower circuit. You can plug an external CV or offset into this input and it will operate like a regular VCA. For even more extreme sound mangling, engage the MUSKRAT mode via the switch to feed a random number into the phase accumulator at the internal clock rate. This mode also includes a gate input that acts as an 'accent'.

The Muskrat was inspired by the MSG: a small desktop breakout of the oscillator core from the Muskrat. The MSG was designed as a prototyping platform to play with code on the Attiny85 while going through hardware revisions on the Muskrat. The MSG was born out of a fascination with trying to push a relatively simple piece of technology to its maximum sonic potential. Naturally, playing with the MSG featured experiments with a few different synthesis techniques. The Muskrat firmware is believed to be the coolest culmination of the different experiments. To bring the circuit into Eurorack, it seemed natural to add bipolar CV control over the different parameters. To fully utilize the intricacies of the different parameters it makes sense to make the pots attenuators rather than offsets to allow for dialled in modulation over small ranges. As with all Moffenzeef modules it turned into something that could be utilized for drum synthesis, hence the trigger and decay circuit.

Basically, pick a kraptastique wave, change the pitch, mangle the hell out of it, feed the rodent, BANG! it; you've caught yourself a Muskrat. WARNING: if you feed the rodent, it's brain goes into a fiery frenzy and spits out glitch after glitch of holy bleepbloopness. If you yank on its tail it'll shriek a lil' longer, especially if you're pulling it at long range. Beware, once you let this critter out of the cage it will want to nest so BANG! it on the head!

User has control over master tempo with coarse and fine adjustments as well as bipolar CV modulation capabilities. Notes: Blinds is a 4-channel voltage-controlled signal polarizer. Each channel consists of a polarizer circuit, also known as a four-quadrant multiplier. This circuit acts like a VCA, except that a negative control voltage will cause the output signal to be inverted, instead of being silenced. Blinds' outputs are daisy-chained, allowing adjacent groups of 2, 3, or all 4 channels, to be mixed together.

One can think of Blinds' as a voltage-controlled version of Shades, the control center for all the modulation CVs used in a patch. Many other uses are possible, though. Modal synthesis voice module comprising a noisy and impulsive excitation signal generator, and 64-partial modal resonator
Notes: Elements is a full-blown synthesis voice based on modal synthesis - an under-appreciated flavour of physical modelling synthesis with a strange and abstract feel.

Elements combines an exciter synthesis section generating raw, noisy sounds characteristic of bowing (filtered friction noise), blowing (pitch-controlled granular noise), or striking (stick, mallet, hammer or brush sample playback... or bursts of synthetic impulsions). These sources, or external audio signals, are processed by a modal filter bank - an ensemble of 64 tuned band-pass filters simulating the response of various resonant structures (plates, strings, tubes...) with adjustable brightness and damping. A stereo ambience reverberator adds depth and presence to the sound.

All parameters have a very meaningful and well-delimited impact on the sound. When designing Elements, great care has been taken in selecting parameter ranges and control curves, producing a large palette of sounds - often beyond physical realism - but always well controlled and stable. The "dark spots" of noise and feedback are reached gradually, and they do still react to controls. The module is deliberately menu- and switch-free - what you dial/patch is what you hear!
